According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, home accidents are the leading cause of death among infants and toddlers. If you haven't taken time to go through your home and properly baby proof it, this article will provide you with a simple guide on how to baby proof your home. Trick # 1 - Get on your hands and knees The best way to find out what you need to baby proof is to get on your hands and knees and look around for all the hazards that exist at your child's level. Depending on the age of the child, there will be different hazards. Always get socket covers to keep your child from sticking things into the electrical outlets and electrocuting themselves. Make sure you put your purse up high or else kids can pull medications and other hazards out of it. Remove all of the small objects from your home because they are a chocking hazard. Have a set area for where everything goes so your kids can't find them. Trick # 2 - Clean To keep your kids safe, you need to keep your home clean. Kids will put anything and everything into their mouths. To protect your child from chocking, you need to clean your home often. Check for things on the kitchen floor like dried pasta, dog food or cat food, beans, etc. Cleaning your home often will help you get rid of all the little chocking hazards that exist in your home. If you have pets, make sure their food is securely stored and always feed them in the garage or washroom. You want to feed them in a location where the children do not frequent. Trick # 3 - Furniture Sadly, more children are injured from furniture accidents in the home. To protect your children, secure your furniture to the walls, especially the television. You might even consider placing the TV at their level so they don't have the need to climb up to see it. If you have DVD stands, move them into a locked room or a locked cabinet that is secured tightly to the wall. Children love to climb so you need to check bookcases and other things that they could climb and potentially tip over to make sure they are secured to the walls. Go around all of the sharp edges on your furniture items and place pillows or foam padding on the sides. Hand bangs are common among children, especially those that are learning to walk. Watch out for sharp edges that can easily cut them or severely injure them. Consider moving the furniture to an office or a room that you keep locked. Do your best to try and secure all of the furniture to protect your children. Be sure to talk to them about dangers from a young age so they start to understand that certain items in the home are not toys. Trick # 4 - Stairs and cabinets A basic baby proofing tip is to use baby gates on all the stairways. You might even consider using them on hallways and doorways to protect your children from going into rooms that are dangerous, like the washroom. Laundry soap may look like a fun sandbox to your child. Always get cabinet

locks to protect your children from opening them and getting into dangerous chemicals. Consider moving your cleaning items to a cabinet that is higher up, just in case your kids figure out how the cabinet locks work. Trick # 5 - Education The best way to baby proof is to educate yourself. Contact your city office building to find out when CPR classes are happening so you can become certified. Check your phone and program in your child's doctor on the speed dial along with other emergency numbers like fire, police, and poison control. Your baby's pediatrician will have some helpful advice on baby proofing tips so be sure to ask for a packet.
