OSSIBILITIES... ...FOR THE JOURNEY 2012 | 3
WELCOME It is my pleasure to welcome you to our newest edition of Private Yacht Vacations. Are you looking for a new way to travel? A way to expand your horizons or spend quality time with your family or friends? Are you here because you heard about the exceptional service and cuisine some of your friends have experienced on previous trips aboard crewed charter yachts? Or, you have already experienced a yacht vacation and are looking for an encore? If so, you are in the right place. Aside from favorite destinations you may explore on a yacht, the following pages bring you a selection of yachts to choose from for your next vacation. There is great diversity with yachts of different sizes, accommodations and price ranges. Yachts that specialize in the Bahamas or the Caribbean, or yachts whose crew are well-versed in the secrets of the Mediterranean ports. A few explore further afield or closer to home. No matter where they go, their experienced crew know where to drop anchor, allowing you to experience the world in a different and special way. Why a private yacht vacation? Today it is easier than ever to travel. The hospitality world is vast and diverse, and resorts around the world offer everything from ecotourism to luxury spa retreats. You can go virtually anywhere in the world today and experience a true change of pace. Land-based vacations can be extraordinary. But having been lucky enough to experience both, I can attest that few vacations can rival a trip on a private yacht, manned by a crew well trained in service, hospitality, recreation and fine dining. The yacht, your home for several days and nights, usually claims the very best spots anywhere, be they at anchor in the shadow of a natural or historic landmark or at the heart of a full-service marina. Discovering a secluded harbor as the yacht rounds a cliff is so much more special than landing at an airport miles away from town. And getting ashore at the marina, you get a sense that the boating set is a tight-knit group often open to sharing experiences and trading stories. There is something else about a private yacht vacation, no matter how luxurious the interior or fine the linens on the beds, slip out of your shoes and step onto the warm teak decks. You can instantly relax. You can be minutes away from civilization, hear the echoes of life on shore, and yet feel as if you have left all your earthly worries behind. Nothing else quite says

PHOTOS BY: JIM RAYCROFT
The First Steps Some vacations are all about the destination, be it a sandy white beach or a glittering waterfront casino. Other vacations are all about the accommodations, which can include everything from multilevel suites to private hot tubs. Still other vacations are about the cuisine, with Michelin-rated chefs who have trained everywhere from Le Cordon Bleu to the Culinary Institute of America. What makes luxury yacht charter different is that it is not only about all three, but that it is also about complete personalization—and then some. The beauty of a yacht charter vacation is that you can have the great destination, the spectacular accommodations and the fabulous cuisine precisely the way that you want them. Everyone’s idea of perfection is different. Yacht charter lets you design a vacation that matches your personal dreams. If you envision a remote harbor with a contemporary suite and steak tartare for breakfast, it’s no problem. If you prefer a bustling social scene with a traditional lounging salon and lobster ravioli for supper, it can be easily arranged. Whether you want Jet Skis or hot tubs, sun lounges or cinema rooms, what sets yacht charter apart is the fact that you can find the perfect combination of amenities for your tastes. Yes, the yachts are spectacular. Of course, the destinations are mesmerizing. But the actual vacation experience, quite literally, is all about you. In the following pages, you will find dozens of luxurious charter yachts as well as two dozen destinations where they are available. Have a look, mark some favorites and then contact a reputable charter broker. The broker’s job is to work exclusively for you, combining in-depth knowledge about crew and more with the basic outline that you provide. Brokers can tell you about yachts that have strong reputations for fishing, scuba diving, family charters, fast sailing, elderly assistance, yoga classes, massage therapy, watersports, glamorous parties and much more. Some yachts may look the same on paper, but their crew and behind-the-scenes specifications can create very different onboard experiences. Your charter broker is the person who ensures that you get the style of vacation you envision after considering the many options in this book. Go ahead and let your mind wander farther than it ever has before, and then get ready for your real life to follow. A yacht charter vacation is all about making your personal dreams come true. The following pages are your first step toward paradise.

INTRODUCTION
6 | PRIVATE YACHT VACATIONS
A typical day or a dream? I open my eyes and roll over, awaking in the plush cradle of the master suite’s king-size bed. With one tap of the remote control, the blackout shades rise and sunlight streams into the room. I prop my head a little higher on the feather pillows and blink a few times to focus my eyes. The view over the yacht’s bow is spectacular. I see nothing but blue water, sandy beaches and green palm trees. If I wanted to lie here all day and enjoy breakfast in bed, I could, or I could wrap the soft robe over my pajamas and meander through the main salon to the yacht’s aft deck. A few deep breaths of the early morning sea breeze would be a nice bit of nature’s medicine, relaxing my neck and back muscles like an invisible massage therapist. I’d turn toward the bar and see that the crew had already made fresh coffee and almond muffins for me to enjoy. A few moments after that, a stewardess would ask me whether I’d like the chef to prepare blueberry pancakes or eggs benedict or some other favorite, and I’d instead ask for a few extra minutes before sitting down to eat—so that I could take a refreshing dip right off the swim platform. Before lunch, I’ll have done some water skiing with the family and enjoyed a soak in the hot tub with the love of my life. After lunch, sunbathing will await on the top deck while the crew moves the yacht to our next destination. I’ll nap a little and read a little and accept chilled drinks from the stewardess with a smile. Then it’s going to be time for a little exploring and shopping on shore, and maybe a hike up the hill for a view of the entire anchorage. Back on the boat, I’ll then enjoy a steam and heated towels in the private master bath’s rainfall shower, followed by cocktail hour in the skylounge with the surround-sound system providing a musical backdrop to the wonderful conversation. The chef’s four-course dinner with perfectly paired wine and exceptional service will follow, as will sipping cocktails into the wee hours with my friends and family in the spectacular main salon. And then I’ll be right back here, in the master suite’s plush king-size bed, once again asking myself whether luxury yacht charter is indeed a vacation, or if it is, in fact, a dream.

Sailing and More In 1671, a yacht christened the Dover Castle sailed into English Harbour and became the first ship ever recorded as entering the protected waters. Today, nearly 350 years later, dozens of yachts at a time dock at the harbor’s Antigua Yacht Club, which has grown to become one of the Caribbean’s best-known marinas. Just steps away from English Harbour are the yachting hubs at Falmouth Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard, the latter named for Admiral Horatio Nelson, who lived there in the late-1700s. Charter clients arrive at all three locations all winter long, walking in the footsteps of history to board the most modern luxury yachts ever conceived. Antigua’s historic place in the annals of yachting is among the most impressive in the entire Caribbean, but the modern-day island is just as well known for its annual Sailing Week. The regatta is a celebration of sailing that draws world-class competitors as well as spectators aboard charter yachts in late April or early May. Some of the world’s finest sailing yachts attend this event, showing off their sleek, composite hulls and lightweight, carbon-fiber masts. If you prefer more natural views, then your charter yacht can spend any time of year poking in and out of bays that lead to Antigua’s 365 beaches. Conch shacks and lobster huts are never more than a tender ride away, and there are enough enclaves that your yacht’s captain will be able to easily avoid cruise ships. Nearby islands, such as Anguilla and Barbuda, are within an easy cruising distance of Antigua for most charter yachts, motor or sail. Sample the local rum punch and relax on a sun pad while your yacht’s crew does all the work of sailing, or jump into the action and crank a winch yourself, just as sailors have been doing in these islands for centuries.

Colorful Playground Nassau is the best-known yachting port in the Bahamas, and it is where a good number of charter vacations begin and end. Several five-star marinas, including the docks at Albany and at the Atlantis resort and casino, are within easy driving or tender distance of the international airport, giving you the option of extending your vacation for a few days on land. Water slides, world-class gaming and gourmet restaurants are all available. Or, you can step onto your charter yacht and leave civilization in your wake as you cruise south to the part of the Bahamas known as the Exumas. The Exumas archipelago is a shallow cruising ground with depths that allow for private yachts but exclude cruise ships. The ambiance is therefore pristine and quiet, and many charter yachts have secluded white beaches all to themselves. Crystal-clean aquamarine waters are gorgeous not only for sailing, but also for snorkeling and scuba diving. Colorful reefs are alive with parrotfish and angelfish, which you can spot without using a mask in many cases. Other highlights in the Exumas include Big Major, where the resident pig Emily wades into the surf to welcome visitors arriving by tender, and Thunderball Grotto, where the James Bond movie “Thunderball” was filmed. You can still snorkel through the cave in which Sean Connery’s Agent 007 hid until he was airlifted to safety. Allan’s Cay, too, is worth a visit to feed the dozens of iguanas that sprint across the sand. Another section of the Bahamas that is popular for charter is the Abacos, to the north of Nassau. A small, regional airport at Marsh Harbour provides access to wonderful fishing grounds and quaint harbor life such as the settlement at Hope Town, whose red-and-white-striped lighthouse has been welcoming cruising yachtsmen since the 1860s.

GRENADA
DESTINATION HIGHLIGHTS
• St. George’s and the colorful Carenage • The Seven Sisters and St. Margaret’s falls • The underwater sculptures of Jason de Caires Taylor at Moliniere Bay • Grand Etang and the rainforest • The Grenada Chocolate Company
• 92 | PRIVATE YACHT VACATIONS
Authentic Caribbean Cruising into the harbor at St. George’s, the capital of Grenada, feels a lot like cruising into a harbor in the Western Mediterranean. Just as in France—whose immigrants settled the island in the mid-1600s—the clear blue water gives way to a towering green hillside filled with colorful shops and homes. The pastel yellows, pinks and whites let you know that you have arrived at civilization, albeit on an island that is still very much as nature created it. Yacht charter vacations can begin or end at Grenada, or can include a week of circling the island itself, since there is so much to see and do. The most popular time of year for yacht charter in Grenada is the second week of August, when Carnival takes place. Colorful, ornate costumes fill the streets along with steel-drum bands and calypso singers, all blending together into a wild cacophony of celebration. You can clap and cheer as the island’s most beautiful women compete for the title of National Queen, or simply shake your booty in the street with the regularlooking folks who are having a jamming good time. Cocoa beans are among the major exports from Grenada, which means a visit to the Grenada Chocolate Company is a must. You can tour the open-air factory and see how freshly harvested cocoa becomes the fermented, sun-dried beans for which Belgian chocolatiers pay a pretty euro. If you’re a woman, you can even help “turn the beans” by walking barefoot through them, just as local ladies have done for generations while their male partners worked out in the fields. Other opportunities on Grenada include hiking through tropical rain forests, swimming at the base of the powerful freshwater spills at St. Margaret’s falls and of course lounging on sun-drenched beaches with the warm Caribbean surf lapping against your toes.

Chic and Lively It is an open secret in yachting circles that some megayachts secure their spots on the quay at Gustavia Harbour a good three months in advance of New Year’s Eve. The annual yacht-hopping party in the St. Barth’s waterfront district is just that good, and since the quay can accommodate only 60 yachts maximum, those keen to ring in the new year secure an upfront seat well in advance of curtain time. Some of the newest megayachts on the world’s waters regularly attend, along with some of the largest charter yachts, since the quay is safe for yachts as long as 200 feet. Those too big for the dock anchor in the nearby harbor and use luxury tenders to ferry party-goers to and from the action. Before and after the big night—and pretty much every other day of the year—the scene on St. Barth’s is one of island chic at its finest. This is where the South of France meets the Caribbean, where chalkboard menus are just as likely to feature moules-frites as conch chowder, where the latest fashions are designed to flow in the warm night breezes. Storefronts offer everything from the latest Cartier creations to handmade leather goods, allowing charter clients to get their shopping fix after a day of wind surfing or paddle boarding just off one of St. Barth’s sandy beaches. The nightlife on St. Barth’s starts at cocktail hour, with a sunset toast being a veritable rite of passage into the cultural scene. Live music, dancing and classic bar chatter are all within easy walking distance of the Gustavia quay. Oftentimes, the party continues back at the yacht and well into morning, when charter yacht chefs offer a comforting breakfast buffet before sending guests off to bed for the better part of the day.

Two-for-One Deal The Treaty of Concordia is not one of the better-known historic documents in Western textbooks, but the 1648 deal continues to affect countless families who visit Sint Maarten every year. The treaty effectively split the Caribbean island between France and the Netherlands, allowing each side to grow culturally in line with its mother nation. Modern-day Sint Maarten is thus an island with two distinct personalities. The spelling Sint Maarten denotes the Dutch side, while the spelling St. Martin refers to the French side. On the Dutch side, you’ll find beaches, discotheques and casinos. On the French side, you can enjoy nude beaches and gourmet restaurants along with duty-free boutiques selling the latest Caribbean fashions. Simpson Bay is located on the Dutch side. It’s a large body of water that is well protected from weather, which is why several large megayacht marinas are located there. Many yacht charter vacations begin and end in Simpson Bay because its marinas are also within 15 minutes of Princess Juliana International Airport, with direct flights to the United States, Europe and more. Sint Maarten is an excellent hub for exploring everywhere from St. Barth’s to Anguilla, making the island a true gateway to the entire northern Caribbean. The close proximity of the airport to the marinas allows most visitors time to visit Maho Beach before flying home. This beach is adjacent to the airport’s runway, and arriving flights preparing to touch down often descend shockingly close to the water and sand. You can stand on the beach with a rum punch in your hand, watching jet airplanes overhead the way parade-goers might crane their necks to see floats. An hour at Maho Beach is akin to having your own personal airshow—a fitting exclamation point following a week’s charter vacation aboard your own personal yacht.

Island Mystique Cruising south from St. Vincent through the Grenadines is like following a trail of breadcrumbs that Mother Nature sprinkled generously across the southern Caribbean Sea. The islands that comprise the Grenadines are lined up one after the next, making it easy for a yacht charter itinerary to include them all. One-way charters are ideal in this destination, allowing you to visit most of the islands and travel comfortably with (instead of bashing against) the seasonal wind and waves. Many charter brokers recommend 10 days instead of seven in the Grenadines if you want to relax, as opposed to racing from one island to the next. Many charters begin in Kingstown, the main port on the southern tip of St. Vincent. From there, it’s a straight southbound shot across the Bequia Channel to the island of Bequia, which offers long beaches lined with upscale boutiques and restaurants. After Bequia, many charter yachts continue south to Mustique, an island filled with private retreats frequented by the rich and famous. You can take a golf-cart tour of the manicured lawns and spectacular homes before settling in at the Firefly for a cocktail and a view of the sun setting over the harbor where your charter yacht is anchored. A handful of islands including Canouan and Mayreau dot the waters to the south between Mustique and the Tobago Cays, which are a protected park and wildlife sanctuary that stretch for about five miles in total. The waters in the Tobago Cays are impossibly blue and green, not to mention filled with vibrant coral reefs, large sea turtles and tropical fish that will delight snorkelers for days. At night, enjoy dinner with a spectacular view from your charter yacht’s aft deck, or tender ashore to one of the lobster barbecues on the beaches. From the Tobago Cays, you can continue south to the airport on Union Island or go beyond to the island nation of Grenada, which also offers international flights.

Classic Caribbean The US and British Virgin Islands are a favorite yacht charter destination for first-time and longtime clients alike. The islands are close together with many protected harbors, which means less time sailing from port to port and more time enjoying the ports themselves. International airports on St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands make access to the location easy, and an array of locally based charter yachts at all price points offers just about every type of experience imaginable. In the British Virgin Islands, highlights of a yacht charter itinerary can include Virgin Gorda, where your charter yacht can anchor in the harbor just beyond the world-famous Bitter End Yacht Club. You can go ashore by tender to enjoy the club’s beaches, restaurants and watersports, and even a dip in the resort’s swimming pool. Another itinerary highlight in the BVI is Jost Van Dyke, where Foxy’s bar and lounge has been welcoming generations of rum-punch lovers and reggae singers. Another classic BVI destination is Pusser’s at Soper’s Hole on Tortola. Order a painkiller—there are several “levels” from which to choose—and feel the stress of everyday life vanish with every sip. In the US Virgin Islands, a must-visit destination is the Yacht Haven Grande marina, restaurant and shopping complex at Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas. This is a great location to start and end charters, with all the benefits of civilization within about 15 minutes of the international airport. If you prefer to stay away from the crowds, then your charter yacht can sail to St. John, an island that is in large part protected as part of a national park. There are hiking trails, sandy white beaches and even snorkeling trails with guidepost signs so that you never need to lift your head away from the colorful underwater views.

Vive La Difference! Corsica is a French island, but it feels almost Italian—not that the locals would call themselves anything other than pure Corsican. There is a real pride of independence on Corsica that makes it seem almost like its own nation-state. There is also, however, a strong emotional connection to the Italian city of Genoa, where the explorer Christopher Columbus is said to have been born. The Corsicans will argue all day that he’s actually a son of their island, and they’ll make their point by offering you the kinds of fresh pasta and pesto for which Genoa is world-renowned. At the end of the day, the only truth that matters is that the island blends a wonderful underpinning of Italian culture with the modern French lifestyle, creating a true Mediterranean gem. Bonifacio is perhaps the most impressive city to visit on Corsica, especially when you have the luxury of approaching from the sea on board a charter yacht. The centuries-old stone buildings seem to be carved right out of the top of the imposing cliff sides, shielding the harbor from the view of approaching vessels (a handy design in the long-ago days of piracy). As you cruise past the impressive facade, you may not even realize that your yacht’s captain is heading for the hidden channel that leads behind the cliff and into the harbor, which is bustling with shops and restaurants. Also worth a visit is the city of Calvi, whose approach is much more traditional, with civilization surrounding the easily accessible port area. Step off your charter yacht and it’s just a few paces to the stone streets where visitors have wandered for generations. Shops and boutiques cater to upscale tourists, as do restaurants and cafés with open-air seating. Watch the sun set across the sea, casting a glow over the distant mountains that seem impossibly violet and red.

Historic Vistas Croatia offers more than a thousand islands to explore, many of them still uninhabited and just as pristine as nature originally made them. A charter here can begin across the Adriatic Sea in Venice if you want to incorporate eastern Italy, or in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik if you are interested in exploring the Croatian coastline all the way south to Montenegro. One-way charters are ideal, following the contours of the Croatian shoreline as far south as time allows in your itinerary. One week is good, but two are better if you have the days to spare. Dubrovnik is an ancient city whose imposing stone walls surround homes and shops that seem so haphazardly jammed inside, it’s a wonder any room was left for streets. What was once a necessity in the age of seagoing marauders is now a fascinating, enclosed civilization filled with restaurants and shops. No cars are allowed inside Dubrovnik’s old town, though you may arrive by charter yacht and anchor just beyond the bustling harbor. Many of the terra-cotta rooftops and stone buildings have been reconstructed with historical accuracy following the nation’s war for independence in the 1990s, so a walk through the streets feels like a walk through history. The best views, though, are from atop the stone walls that ring the city and offer a walking promenade that overlooks the entire scene, including the sea. When you’ve had enough of civilization and history, you can tuck into one of Croatia’s many quiet harbors and enjoy beautiful views as well as watersports. Or, continue to another historic city such as Kor˘cula or Cavtat, where modern restaurants and boutiques now line the old stone streets and classic stairways that local residents have enjoyed for centuries. In Kor˘cula, you can explore a home believed to have once been inhabited by Marco Polo, or just stroll along the waterfront, where movie stars are known to film all summer long.

Nice and Easy Many destinations welcome charter yachts each summer, but none see so many arrive as the French Riviera. From May through October, the Côte d’Azur is home to the largest collection of megayachts for charter in the world. The newest launches from leading global shipyards enter the scene like debutantes arriving at an elegant ball. The best-known yachts hold their positions in the marinas like elder statesmen in fine leather chairs at a gentlemen’s club. In the South of France, the yachts themselves have personalities. They are as much a part of the local scene as any person, building or historic monument. Chartering a yacht on the French Riviera means joining one of the most affluent communities on earth. July and August are known as “high season,” which means the most sought-after dates for chartering the most sought-after yachts. Weekly rates spike during these months, and clients often book as much as six months in advance—not only to guarantee the charter yacht of their choice, but also to secure slips for tying up at the crowded marinas. Many clients book charters of two to three consecutive weeks during high season, making the most of their summer vacations in the world’s playground for the rich and famous. Ports of call along the French Riviera can include Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Villefranche and more. Each town has its own distinct character, but all of them offer open-air markets, high-end boutiques, Michelin-starred restaurants, raging discotheques and beautiful sandy beaches. You can pair historic walking tours by day with stepping-out-in-stilettos by night, or simply relax on your charter yacht’s aft deck and take in a private view of the entire scene. For a little privacy, relax on your yacht’s sun-deck, high above the prying eyes ashore yet immersed in the warm sunshine that makes the Côte d’Azur so grand.

Picture Perfect History The Dodecanese archipelago belongs to Greece, but much of it runs parallel—and within easy cruising distance— of the southwestern coast of Turkey. It’s not uncommon to be cruising in the waters between the two nations and see the white-and-blue Greek flag flying on land to starboard while the red-and-white flag of Turkey flies on land to port. Greek nationalism is strong in the Dodecanese chain, but it is infused with bits of Turkish heritage, as well. The ancients who built the civilizations that visitors now explore as ruins knew nothing of future borders, so history is alive everywhere you look. Some of the lesser-known islands in the Dodecanese are among the prettiest, including Symi, whose harbor is among the most picturesque in all of the Greek Isles. As in the South of France or Italy, yellow, orange and pink homes and shops rise from the sea up the harbor’s surrounding hills, making it feel like you are cruising into a colorful cradle of civilization as your charter yacht docks at the marina. The most famous of the Dodecanese Islands is Rhodes, whose impressive walled city dates to medieval times. The spot where the drawbridge used to be is still at the old town’s entrance, though it now welcomes visitors instead of serving as a protective barrier against invaders. Inside, uneven stone walkways lead to the old town square, which today is surrounded by boutiques, cafés and restaurants. Perhaps the best part of a yacht charter vacation here is the crystal-blue water that awaits at almost every turn. The views are terrific, seemingly custom-made for everything from swimming to snorkeling. If you enjoy sailing, the winds can be spectacular and provide a true thrill ride across the Mediterranean Sea. If you prefer to motor, there are enough protected waterways to keep you comfortable under way.

GREECE: SARONIC ISLANDS
DESTINATION HIGHLIGHTS
• Athens and its attractions are an easy cruise away from the Saronic Gulf • The fish market, narrow alleys and temples of Aegina offer authentic charm • Stroll the pedestrian haven of Hydra, one of the Greek islands’ most beautiful harbors • Poros has beautiful beaches and pine forests only an hour and half away from Athens
112 | PRIVATE YACHT VACATIONS
The Great Classics Some 18 million tourists visit Athens each year, queuing up to see the Parthenon and the Ancient Agora in what feels almost like a crowded pilgrimage. Far fewer people venture just offshore to Greece’s Saronic Islands—which boast the same history as well as some wonderfully preserved temples and ruins, all without the lines of people and kitschy mass appeal. The proximity of the Saronic Islands to Athens make the archipelago an easy international destination for embarking on a yacht charter vacation, but the islands themselves feel a world apart. Hydra, for instance, is an island whose harbor is one of the most picturesque in the entire Mediterranean Sea, and the only way to explore it is on foot or by donkey or mule, since cars are banned. Cruise into the protected marina with colorful houses and shops cascading across the hillsides, and step off your charter yacht into a cozy waterfront filled with open-air restaurants playing traditional Greek music well into the night. Another wonderful waypoint is the island of Poros, which is so lovely that it was chosen as the home of the charter industry’s annual yacht show each year in Greece. When the locals had to decide where to bring international yachting professionals to truly show off the beauty of the Saronic Islands, they selected Poros. Yacht charter clients can enjoy the scene the same way the pros do, sampling Greek salads and pistachio ice cream while walking along a marina quay dotted with boutiques and shops. At night, live bands and performers can be found in some of the open-air restaurants, filling the entire harbor with the sounds of modern and traditional music alike. What’s also nice about these islands is that nature crafted them in something of a circle, so a round-trip itinerary from Athens is easy. If you still want to make the pilgrimage with the crowds, you can do so either at the beginning or the end of your private yacht vacation.

Rhymes with Beauty As seaside regions go, southwestern Italy’s Amalfi Coast has both a storied past and a spectacular present. The coastline grew up along with the fishing trade, which brought a traditional way of life to the harbors that carve into the lush hillsides from the Mediterranean Sea. Many of the people who live in this part of the world have held dear to their customs while luxury resorts, restaurants and boutiques have grown all around them. The result is an area where charter yacht guests can enjoy historic walks alongside gourmet cuisine, and where it is possible to view architectural treasures while enjoying the most modern of comforts. The combination of old and new is both rare and precious, as well as not to be missed. A good place to begin or end an Amalfi Coast charter is the city of Naples, the birthplace of pizza and home to Europe’s largest remaining historic city center. Walk amid the Neapolitan buildings and view the countless artistic treasures in the museums, some of which proudly tout the city’s leading role in cultural awakenings during the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods of human history. Close to Naples are the ruins of Pompeii, a Roman city that was destroyed in 79 A.D. when the Mount Vesuvius volcano erupted for two days in a row. Pompeii remained buried in ash for some 1,500 years before being excavated into the fascinating display that now exists. Your yacht charter can include private tours that are timed to avoid the crowds, especially during the peak summer weeks. The rest of the Amalfi Coast is far less touristy, with many of the seaside villages being most easily accessible by boat—and therefore catering to the yachting set. Bring your walking shoes and stroll along the old stone streets, taking in the local culture and enjoying a gelato at sunset.

Coastal Charm The harbor at Portofino is one of the most spectacular in all of the Mediterranean. Pink, yellow and white houses climb the cliff sides, piling atop one another like a color-coordinated ensemble. Their reflections glitter across the aquamarine harbor in a shimmering display, with the summer sunbeams acting as a laser light show from above. All along the quay, lovers holding hands meander past the traditional wooden dayboats, stopping for a coffee at an outdoor table and listening to the sounds of street accordions. They crane their necks to see the three or four megayachts that have made reservations to squeeze into the harbor, making the charter guests on board feel like world-renowned celebrities. Portofino—an easy day cruise from the international port city of Genoa—is a gateway stop en route to Cinque Terre proper. Cinque Terre means “The Five Lands” and comprises five villages along Italy’s northwestern coast. A hiking trail connects the towns if you are interested in day walks, or you can wander up and down the stone streets in any one of the villages, perusing the handcrafted goods in the boutiques and noshing on fresh-baked rolls from the bread shops. Tuscan food and wine, including Parma ham and Brunello, fill virtually every restaurant. The house reds served in water-style glasses at family-owned eateries are sometimes better than renowned international wines. Also in this region are Santa Margherita and its lovely harbor, and the island of Elba just offshore in the Tuscan archipelago. Elba is where Napoléon Bonaparte was exiled with the title of the island’s emperor in the early 1800s. Today, you can walk amid the ruins of the structures where he once lived and see the same views that he enjoyed toward mainland Europe.

Home of the Megayachts Monaco is the world’s second-smallest nation, after Vatican City, but its size in the world of yachting is larger than life itself. The port of Monaco is home to some of the world’s largest and most impressive megayachts, many of which garner the highest weekly charter rates in the history of cruising vacations. Heads of state, international business leaders and celebrities are frequently seen stepping from the marina quay onto the yachts’ passarelles, drawing attention from the paparazzi who call Monaco’s port their home office. Yacht charter here is about seeing and being seen, embracing the lifestyle of the glitterati and feeling absolutely fabulous. The annual Monaco Grand Prix, held each May, marks the unofficial start of the summer yachting season in the Mediterranean. Chartered yachts pack the port for bird’s-eye views of the city streets, where Formula 1 racecars zip along the straightaways and hairpin turns. The tallest charter yachts offer the best vantage points, while the biggest charter yachts offer some of the best race-day parties. As the crowds ashore are jockeying for position in lines at overflowing hotels and restaurants, yacht charter guests are enjoying the sanctuary of private salons and personal chefs. Beyond Grand Prix week, Monaco offers countless shops and boutiques featuring the finest new offerings from Paris, Milan and New York. The Monte-Carlo Casino remains fashionably jaw-dropping many years after being designed by the same architect who conceived the Paris Opera, and the fountains that line the pedestrian walkways are as grand as any you’ll find in London or Rome. During winters, many yachts remain in Monaco for static charters, which take place solely at the dock and are an excellent option for anyone wishing to throw a lavish party. Some megayachts can accommodate more than 100 guests at a time for charters that include birthdays, anniversaries or weddings.

Rock Solid Beauty Costa Smeralda means “Emerald Coast,” a name that denotes this part of Sardinia’s aquamarine waters lapping against white, sandy beaches. The jet set has favored this segment of the Italian island since the mid-1900s, when luxury resorts, golf courses, private jetways, polo fields and more began springing up to accommodate VIPs who had tired of the South of France. The seaside resort of Porto Cervo is absolute chic personified, with discotheques and restaurants serving some of the rarest and priciest wines and champagnes found anywhere in the world. Hollywood’s elite mingle here with soccer gods and business titans, not to mention royalty of the real kind from all across Europe. The impressive display of wealth in Costa Smeralda makes it a magnet for luxury yachts visiting Sardinia or even the city of Bonifacio, to the north across the Strait of Bonifacio on the nearby island of Corsica. During September, true yachting aficionados make their way to the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Porto Cervo for the annual Sardinia Cup Regatta, which draws serious competitors from all around the globe. Yacht charter guests can participate as spectators and take part in the shoreside parties each night, mingling with America’s Cup legends and the owners of some of the finest sailing yachts ever built. The rest of Sardinia offers lots to see and do as well, much of it on a more natural scale. Seaside ports are colorful and charming, filled with fishing boats as well as tour boats and private yachts. Historic ruins are a bit inland if you’re interested in a day trip, or you can explore the shops and restaurants along the waterfront at virtually every port of call. Peaceful, undeveloped harbors are also to be found here, if you’d prefer your yacht’s captain to drop anchor in solitude so you can simply enjoy the quiet.

No Place Like Sicily Mount Etna is Europe’s largest active volcano and it is located on the Italian island of Sicily, which is the largest in all of the Mediterranean Sea. That is impressive in and of itself, of course, but even better is the fact that it’s located within easy cruising distance of the Aeolian Islands, to Sicily’s north. There, the much smaller island of Stromboli also boasts an active volcano— one close enough to the sea that its near-constant eruptions are visible from visiting charter yachts. Relax in the sun deck’s hot tub at sunset while watching nature’s fireworks display in the distance, perhaps enjoying a fine Italian wine in the spirit of Sicily’s mother country. The view is unobstructed, there are no crowds to jostle amid, and the memory will last a lifetime. Sicily’s pure size, along with its location far from Corsica and Sardinia, makes it an island best explored by charter yacht via a circumnavigation. The island has a history that is a virtual tapestry of civilization itself, with its strategic position making it a favorite of conquerors century after century. Greeks, Romans, Arabs and others have at one time or another controlled the island, which makes for a rich amalgam of architecture and culture. There truly is no other place on Earth like Sicily, with each village offering another window into yet another period of human history. Your charter yacht’s chef can help you sample the local delicacies, which include main courses such as veal Marsala (made with locally bottled wine) and desserts such as cannolo, which is a pastry stuffed with ricotta cheese and topped with pistachio nuts. Water skiing, snorkeling, swimming and scuba diving in the island’s crystal-blue waters will help keep your healthy lifestyle in check if you choose to indulge.

Delectable Diversity Yacht charter in Turkey takes place primarily along the southwestern coast, mostly with one-way itineraries between the cities of Bodrum and Göcek because each is close to regional and international airports. Round-trip itineraries are also available, especially to the east of Göcek, where the ports can be more exclusive and in some cases accessible only by boat. Throughout this region, you will find an enchanting combination of modern life and historic ruins, with opportunities ranging from a bit of haggling in the shopping bazaars to kayaking or swimming around the remains of Cleopatra’s baths. In the port cities, including the bustling one at Marmaris, day boats and charter yachts alike line the harbor quays by the dozens. Expect to see a large number of gulets, which are the region’s traditional vessels. They are motorsailors with wide middles and rounded sterns, usually built from mahogany. In generations past, gulets were used as a main source of transportation for commercial goods. Today, they are used for tourism and are sometimes built with interiors as luxurious as modern sailing yachts. The yacht charter season in Turkey is among the longest in the Mediterranean, with summer sunshine and warm waters arriving in May and staying clear through October. If you can avoid the peak months of July and August, there are great deals and fewer crowds. A typical day on charter in Turkey includes a combination of land and water activities. There is always a hill beckoning for a hike that leads back down to a clear cove for a swim, or sometimes a snorkeling opportunity right over the remains of an ancient stone building. Then there is cruising or sailing with a view of the distant mountains, followed by a walk in a town on shore with restaurants and boutiques. Turkish charter yachts usually offer dinner starting around 9 p.m., with three or four courses that can last until well after midnight.

New England, Living History When the Pilgrims arrived in America by way of the Mayflower, they landed at Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Boaters have been visiting New England’s shores ever since, with the first settlers in the New World building shoreside towns ideally situated for fishing, whaling and exporting goods back to Europe. Today, those towns are historic port cities that dot the coastline from Newport, Rhode Island, all the way to Portland, Maine. Yachting is a way of life in modern New England, much as boating is the foundation of the region’s entire history. The most popular charter routes run round-trip from Newport and include enclaves of the rich and famous such as Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. By day, the beaches are filled with families enjoying the sunshine and surf. Around mid-afternoon, shoppers appear in the tony boutiques and tiny cafés. Come sunset, lobster and clam bakes take over as the favorite way to sample the local cuisine. At night, everyone goes back to the boat for a cocktail and great conversation. Newport itself is worth a few days of exploring, too, with everything from J Class sailboat races to mansions built by “American royalty” such as the Vanderbilt family. A walk along the waterfront in Newport can be an exercise in the history of yachting itself, with countless styles of boats easily within view. Farther up the American coastline in Maine, the ambiance of a yacht charter vacation can feel more rustic. While waterfront towns including Bar Harbor offer all the high society, shops, restaurants and cricket games you might want to enjoy, much of the coast remains rocky and undeveloped beyond a few nicely marked walking paths. It’s fun simply to spend a day watching all of the lobstermen at work, with their traditional boats maneuvering between the charter yachts to collect the day’s catch from the underwater traps.

EXOTIC
Each year, a handful of luxury charter yachts venture well beyond the established marinas in the world’s most popular cruising areas. The experiences that they offer are far from civilization and, sometimes, in places where few humans have ever ventured. The Indian Ocean is becoming more popular for summertime charters, especially in the Maldives and Seychelles archipelagos. Both offer pristine, sandy beaches and warm, clean waters, and their location in what feels like the middle of nowhere makes them an excellent escape for famous faces and moguls alike. Luxury resorts, golf courses and spas are now emerging amid the undeveloped islands, giving yacht charter clients a choice of the high life on-shore or absolute solitude at anchor. In Southeast Asia, the area in and around Phuket, Thailand, has invested in megayacht marinas that are drawing more charter yachts each year. Traditional, wooden longboats fill the waterways right alongside steel-hulled superyachts, creating an interesting blend of local culture and international comforts. The beaches are beautiful here, often surrounded by towering cliffs, and there are plenty of protected harbors in which to ride your yacht’s Jet Skis. The greater South Pacific, too, offers interesting options everywhere from New Zealand’s wine country to Fiji’s tribal archipelagos. Big-game fishing and serious scuba diving can often be incorporated into charters here, in waters where few boats cruise and big fish and reefs remain. Tahiti, Tonga and a handful of other islands tend to attract the charter yachts that do visit, offering picturesque vistas of palm trees and clear-blue ocean as far as the eye can see. For the truly adventurous charter client, other options can include Antarctica, the Galápagos Islands, the Baltic Sea and beyond, depending on where the handful of more ambitious yacht owners choose to position their boats each season. Exotic yacht charter is just that—not as easily captured as the more regular options—but certainly worth the journey, which is often a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
