Audience socio-economic groups
The population is divided into different socio-economic groups or social grades; this is based on an individual’s occupation/job. The different groups represent a person’s rank in society. The six socio-economic groups are: A – Higher managerial, administrative, professional e.g. chief executive, senior civil servant, surgeon B – Intermediate managerial, administrative, professional e.g. bank manager, teacher C1 – Supervisory, clerical, junior managerial e.g. shop floor supervisor, bank clerk, sales person C2 – Skilled manual workers e.g. electrician, carpenter D – Semi – skilled and unskilled manual workers e.g. assembly line worker, refuse collector, messenger E – Casual labourers, pensioners, unemployed e.g. pensioners without private pensions and anyone living on basic benefits By researching the different groups, group E consists of unemployed individuals such as students and we think that our short film is likely to be viewed by students. The socioeconomic group D may also be interested in our film because groups D and E are not as sophisticated as C, B and A; who will not be able to connect with the topic/genre of our short film. The short film covers issues of child sexual abuse, the main issue is child rape where a victim can suffer serious long-term psychological trauma. We feel that students are the main audience for our short film because the main character is around their age range and they are the type of people who are more likely to be able to connect with the issues and concept of the short film. We wanted the film to be targeted at the socio economic groups D and E which consists of parents and more importantly students because children are the victims of child sexual abuse. We want our target audience to be aware of real life issues which could affect them; certain individuals may also be experiencing these issues at home. The whole point of the film is to raise the awareness of these issues and for victims to take further action by putting a stop to child sexual abuse; this is why the decision had been made to target groups D and E.
