Just like a great book you can’t put down, Manhattan history is a real page-turner! Kansas has always been a free state, ever since abolitionist pioneers arrived in 1855 to tackle the prairie and put down roots. A steamboat named the Hartford ran aground here. The name, Manhattan, was agreed upon by its passengers and we’ve been making history ever since.
Notice as you drive around town that Bluemont Ave. turns into Anderson Ave. Kansas State University was first known as, Bluemont College. The adjacent road was named after the campus, and as a tribute to the University’s second president, John Anderson, the roadway was adjusted in order to bear that name as well. KSU was the first land-grant university in the nation!
Did you know that inside of Harry’s restaurant, there are marble walls about 7 feet tall that serve as a marker of how high flood waters reached in 1951? How about taking a trip to visit the original limestone benches at Sunset Zoo? Did you know they were put in place by the Works Progress Administration and unearthed again in 2012 for an exhibit renovation?

Outdoors It’s an outdoor extravaganza in our part of the world! Fortunately for us, those involved in the history and making of Manhattan noticed our natural treasures. Long ago steps were taken to preserve and cherish them. 8,600 acres of Tallgrass Prairie lay to our south while the second largest body of water in the state, Tuttle Creek Lake and the rest of Tuttle Creek State Park lay to our north, covering 12,500 acres of water, 100 miles of rugged shoreline, and 1,200 acres of park. Annual hunting brings hunters from across the United States to hunt turkey, waterfowl and deer. Find a historic hangout such as, Pillsbury Crossing. Outdoor adventures for all types await. All are easily accessible from The Little Apple®. In addition to traditional camping, hunting, hiking and general exploring, Manhattan proudly features a nearby off-road park, trap-shooting park and multiple disc golf courses. Like the water? Rent a canoe or kayak. Need a jog? Run on Linear Trail. Did you bring your jeep or 4-wheeler? Head out of town to the off-road park. In Manhattan we want to share all the fun things there are to do around here. We want you to come back and bring your friends. Above all else, we encourage you to get your hands dirty, and experience Manhattan hands on. Ever visit your grandparent’s farm as a kid? Or have a cousin who always had a calf to show at the fair? One of Manhattan’s most unique attractions are our working ranches. Allow us to set up tours for you to reminisce, or share part of your childhood with the family!
Any of these ideas sound insanely fun to you? Call or email us at the Convention & Visitors Bureau. We can direct you to places mentioned, give you maps, and clarify questions. (785) 776-8829 or firstname.lastname@example.org

The Little Apple®
We take great pride in our educational opportunities here in Manhattan. College students attending Kansas State University and Manhattan Christian College, students of all ages and from all corners of the world, make their way to The Little Apple®.
K-State offers more than 250 undergraduate degrees and 92 percent of those classes have fewer than 50 students. It’s no wonder that K-State produces successful entrepreneurs, business men and women, journalists, architects and so much more. Ranked number one nationally in Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater and Udall scholarships over the last 25 years, 97 percent of recent graduates would recommend K-State to their friends! Additionally, Manhattan features the AIB International, the Marinello Schools of Beauty, Bellus Academy LLC, and the Manhattan Area Technical College. Manhattan Area Technical College (MATC) is an important part of The Little Apple®. With 15 programs of study for associates degrees, quickly-completed programs and starting salaries for most grads at more than $35,000. Enrollment is less than 1,000 so student to teacher ratios are ideal for MATC, and important, since 70 percent of jobs in Kansas require a technical education. 3136 Dickens Avenue, (785) 587-2800, (800) 352-7575, www.manhattantech.edu AIB International is headquartered in Manhattan, and offers seminars, classes and professional training through Baking Science and Technology. AIB provides food safety audits under the Global Food Safety Initiative, and are conducted in more than 120 countries. If you catch a whiff of baking bread or mouth-watering cookies on the wind, it probably means the students at AIB are whipping up new recipes again. 1213 Bakers Way, (785) 537-4750, (800) 633-5137, www.aibonline.org One of many great partnerships that K-State participates with is Manhattan Christian College (MCC). Students can get degrees from MCC, or, get a dual degree with K-State. MCC offers degrees in ministry programs, and nearly every area of church or parachurch related ministry. The college was founded in 1927, and today has more than 300 undergraduate students. 1415 Anderson Avenue, (785) 539-3571, (877) 246-4622, www.mccks.edu Marinello Schools of Beauty provides Manhattan with one of the two beauty colleges. This Kansas Cosmetology School allows students to attend programs full-time, or part-time for classes. The curriculum is centered around two phases, and also teaches students the business side of the industry for those wanting to own their own salon someday. 512 Poyntz Avenue, (785) 776-4794, www.marinello.com Manhattan’s other beauty school; Bellus Academy is based in San Diego, with Manhattan being their newest campus. This school offers courses in Cosmetology, Esthetics, Holistic Health Practitioner, Massage Therapy, Spa Nail Technician and Bellus Best in Business training, among others. Both beauty colleges provide Manhattan with spa and cosmetology services at discounted prices as a learning tool to students. 1130 Westloop, (785) 539-1837, www.bellusacademy.edu/w_manhattan_kansas_college
Kansas State University celebrates 150 years! It began 150 years ago- Manhattan residents with a high value on education, for both men and women, opened Bluemont Central College in 1860, which became Kansas State Agricultural College in 1863. The first graduating class in 1867 consisted of 2 men, and 3 women. In 1959, the campus officially became Kansas State University. More than 23,800 students now attend KSU each year. K-State is an international leader for teaching, learning, research and service. Alumni and the Manhattan community bleed purple for this school as it strives to become a top 50 public research university by 2025. Join the Wildcats and The Little Apple速 in honoring the achievements and triumphs of Kansas State University! From all of us- congratulations on 150 innovative and wonderful years- we look forward to the next 150 years.

Dining It’s dining time. You’re in steak country here- but don’t let that stop you from trying out all the tastes we have to offer. From Bruschetta that would make the Italians drool to fresh-daily seafood to authentic Jamaican, Manhattan surprises even the most uppity foodies. With multiple restaurants receiving awards and national rankings it’s not surprising to chance upon someone who visits just to try the local restaurants.
