inauguration. “It was humbling and so exciting,” Johnston says. Next year Mango Groove turns 40, and, in that time, they’ve played before sellout crowds around the world, including London, Hong Kong and Toronto. “It’s 39 years for me,” says Johnston. “Mango Groove is still what it’s always been: fun, with depth, and some social commentary. We love performing and the support we get across the generations.” New material is on the cards, including a documentary and a musical. “There are creative stirrings with exciting collaborators,” she explains.

A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY

Once the soundtrack to South Africa’s road to democracy, Claire Johnston and Mango Groove are still on the musical ride of their lives. By NIA MAGOULIANITI-MCGREGOR

M

ango Groove’s lead singer Claire Johnston has been on many journeys (including, she says, “the ongoing journey of being a human being”), but none as “scary” as the first time she hit the road with Mango Groove’s 11-piece band. “I was 17 and the only girl. Somehow, my mother trusted me to go. We crammed ourselves into a kombi and off we went. In those days, you were lucky if you found a usable toilet at some of the stops.” A road trip is something she yearns to do now: “My dream was to drive along the US’s iconic Route 66, but now my heart is closer to home. I’m planning to take three months off to drive through South Africa, from the Sterkfontein Dam outside Harrismith in the Free State through Underberg and the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal to the game reserves in Mpumalanga. “We have so many hidden gems in this country – I especially love our small towns such as Graaff-Reinet, Nottingham Road, Clarens and McGregor,” she says. Johnston says South Africa has been on quite a ride too. “I agree with Siya Kolisi when, after winning the World Cup, he said: ‘our country has gone through such a lot’. But, I’m now feeling a growing positivity. I can feel the energy. We’re finding ourselves again as a nation.” Some of this, she says, is thanks to music.

BREAKING BARRIERS “Music helps people escape their difficulties and break down barriers. It’s only something the arts and sports can do. It repairs what politicians can’t,” explains Johnston. Mango Groove broke boundaries and barriers, when as a mixed-race band during the apartheid era, they captured the imagination of audiences, first in smoky downtown Joburg clubs and then more sizable venues as their popularity grew. They cemented their status as a soundtrack to South Africa’s road to democracy when they played at the Union Buildings for Nelson Mandela’s

TRAVEL TAKEOUTS Favourite travel destination: Seychelles. After complaining beforehand about having to spend too long there, I found it unexpectedly gorgeous. Best travel experience: Watching lions being released into the Shamwari Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. Worst: On our way to Australia via Hong Kong, a technical problem meant we landed in Mauritius at 2am, we were raced to a hotel by the world’s worst bus driver, slept there for three hours, then ferried back to the plane and a night in Hong Kong. We were shattered when we got to Sydney. Bucket list destination: Italy to eat pasta – I’m told it’s made with love. Best food on a travel gig: An Indian restaurant in Paris. Road trip soundtrack: Coldplay’s Adventure of a Lifetime and Mango Groove, Faces to the Sun, especially the song In Our Own Paradise.

Creative stirrings and exciting collaborations

There have been memorable emotional journeys along the way, Johnston says: marrying and getting divorced from Mango Groove’s founder John Leyden, her mother dying not long afterwards, a breast cancer recovery journey, some heartbreaks and now a new sweetheart, who shares her love of adventure and travel. “I’m trying to balance being child-like – but never childish – while growing up and making sense of being in the world. “I am on a voyage of continual discovery,” she concludes.

PRE, POST AND PROBIOTICS

CUE THE PROBIOTICS Probiotic supplements are often prescribed together with antibiotics. They replace the good bacteria in our bodies that are destroyed by the antibiotics and assist with side effects such as diarrhoea. It is very important to take the probiotic at least two hours before or after the antibiotic. Otherwise, all those good bacteria in the probiotic are killed by the powerful antibiotics.

Probiotics are usually taken twice a day on an empty stomach and should be continued for several weeks. There is generally no harm in taking a probiotic every day; it is safe and encouraged. Eating a well-balanced, fibre-rich diet also helps to keep the good bacteria at appropriate levels. Foods, such as yoghurt, buttermilk, dark chocolate, fermented pickles, cottage cheese, sourdough bread and miso soup, are home to a host of good bacteria. Common probiotics found in health supplements are the bacteria lactobacillus and bifidobacterium and the yeast saccharomyces boulardii. When buying a supplement, choose a high-quality product from a trustworthy manufacturer with at least one of these strains and containing a minimum of a billion colony-forming units (the number of live micro-organisms) each per dosing unit, for example, the capsule. This may be indicated on the label as 1 x 109 CFU. A large amount of research on probiotics is currently being undertaken to find answers on how probiotics can assist with specific conditions. My recommendation is to trust your gut and support your healthy microbiome daily with probiotics. HOW TO CHOOSE A SOLUTION Together pre, pro and postbiotics work synergistically to improve gut health, benefitting overall health. Not all gut health products are created equally, however, and it is important to choose premium quality supplements that contain high-quality, researched ingredients. Ceregut™, a probiotic supplement containing lactobacillus helveticus Rosell®-52 and bifidobacterium longum Rosell®-175, has been studied for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety and improve mood via the gut-brain axis. Bettergut™ , a pre and postbiotic, has been studied for its beneficial effects on strengthening gut lining, reducing inflammation and promoting a healthier gut microbiome for improved overall health. * Source: www.phytoceutics.com

e all have a unique community of trillions of beneficial and possibly harmful bacteria, yeasts and other organisms living in our bodies called a microbiome. They mostly live in the gut, but are also found in, for example, the mouth, vagina, urinary tract, skin and lungs. A healthy and balanced microbiome is critical to our overall wellbeing. Some call it our “second brain”. Even small imbalances in our microbiome may cause significant changes, not only to the digestive system, but also to skin appearance, mental health, immune system and weight. For example, when we are sick, bad bacteria can increase in number and throw out the balance of our microbiome. Certain diets or medications can also trigger imbalances. Probiotics are a combination of good and beneficial bacteria and/or yeasts that occur naturally in our bodies. Good bacteria may help with digesting food, supporting immune function, controlling inflammation, producing vitamins and breaking down and absorbing medicine. The main purpose of probiotics is to restore and maintain a healthy, neutral balance in our bodies.

Prebiotics (nondigestible fibres found in plant-based foods or supplements) fuel the beneficial bacteria in the gut. They can help improve digestive health and, by nurturing good bacteria, prebiotics can reduce inflammation, positively affect immune health and influence gut hormones related to appetite and weight control as well. Probiotics (live microorganisms present in fermented foods or supplements) restore gut microbiome balance, enhance digestion and support the immune system. They can reduce the risk of gastrointestinal infections, aid mental health through the gut-brain axis and improve nutrient absorption. Postbiotics (bioactive compounds produced by probiotics) offer various health benefits in that they can help strengthen the gut barrier and provide beneficial anti-inflammatory effects.

n the intricate tapestry of overall wellness, the spotlight is turning increasingly towards an often underestimated hero – gut health. Beyond its primary digestive functions, the gut plays a pivotal role in influencing both physical and mental wellbeing. As scientific research delves deeper into the complexities of the gut microbiome, it becomes increasingly evident that nurturing this internal ecosystem is key to unlocking harmonious balance in our lives. Physically, a thriving gut microbiome ensures optimal nutrient absorption, guards against inflammation and aids in preventing conditions, such as obesity, allergies, inflammation, depression, anxiety, IBS, constipation, reflux, and so forth. Simultaneously, the gut’s influence extends to mental wellness with a delicate gut-brain connection. Serotonin, a mood-regulating neurotransmitter, finds its roots in the gut, linking microbiome imbalances to mental health challenges. In the pursuit of holistic wellbeing, our diet assumes a central role. A nourishing mix of fibre, fermented foods and probiotics fortifies the microbiome, creating a robust foundation

AFRICAN DREAM

Gaynor Galbraith-Neill, CEO of Cruise Vacations, provides some tips for clients considering booking a luxury cruise holiday. • Be open-minded, dispel the myths. Luxury cruise lines offer a boutique base from which to explore some of the most incredible destinations worldwide. These are not large resort liners, carrying thousands of passengers. These are smaller vessels, carrying between 100–610 guests in suite accommodation – perfect for those who like immersive travel experiences and enjoy the finer things in life. • Book early for the best pricing and availability. Luxury cruise lines tend to have capacity-controlled dynamic pricing, so the earlier you book, the more likely you are to secure the best fares and promotions. Cruise lines release their programmes up to two years in advance. Flexible terms and conditions give you the security to plan ahead. • Book locally for a personal and expert service. Making your booking with officially appointed agents, such as Cruise Vacations, will ensure you get the best available rates, any market-related offers and expert advice.

nvesting in, supporting and nurturing young artists, their talent and potential is vital for the future of the arts. And today, arguably more so than at any other time in our history, South African contemporary art is finding itself enjoying global popularity. So there really is no better time than now to invest in South African art and artists. Piqued interest and curiosity around African art and the number of African art exhibitions and auctions are increasing, and the prices for these works are also rising. This all bodes well for the vibrancy of the local market and provides the impetus for a growing number of emerging new-generation African artists who are producing high-quality works that are attracting more attention from art collectors and museums around the world, At Art@Africa, we have been solely focused on providing a space that displays an entirely South African artist line-up, hoping to provide a platform where our extraordinary South African talent can be recognised on an international level. Art@Africa gallery uses its unique setting to celebrate the diversity of South African art where new artists and the established crème de la crème artists’ works are showcased together. Thanks to Art@Africa’s extensive network, we are able to connect South African talent with local and international investors. Art@Africa gallery is not just a visual browsing space, but as Nadine Froneman states, “apart from building artists’ profiles via expert marketers and an onboard lawyer, Art@Africa

also brings 31 years of international experience in themed construction to the table and assists clients, architects and interior designers to select the correct artwork for their homes, offices, gardens, hotels or any development.”

Kunye Colab “For an artist to buy canvas and paint is easy,” says Katlijn Durnez, “but for sculptures and 3D works, the bar is much higher. They have no access to expensive materials and the equipment needed to create sculptures.” That’s why, she adds, Kunye was started. It is a collaboration between young emerging artists under the direction of Dirk Durnez, who – in the final phase of his career – decided to transfer his 38 years of international experience and know-how in themed construction, edutainment and art to a team of young, emerging artists. “Kunye assists young and promising sculptors to create a career for themselves by offering them a stocked and equipped studio,” says Katliijn. “We celebrate one of the most diverse countries in the world, and Kunye is an opportunity for us to give back to the country that has given me so many creative opportunities throughout my time here,” says Dirk.

Art@Africa focuses on positive messages by South African artists reflected through the gallery.

Art@Africa’s owners invest in Kunye Colab , an art residency for talented sculptors.

There is always something interesting to discover.

ART@AFRICA GALLERY USES ITS UNIQUE SETTING TO CELEBRATE THE DIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICAN ART WHERE NEW ARTISTS AND THE ESTABLISHED CRÈME DE LA CRÈME ARTISTS’ WORKS ARE SHOWCASED TOGETHER.

The Kunye Colab studio assists with ideas, materials, know-how, technology, logistics, financial support and equipment.

flanked by whitewashed buildings framed in the distance by the Witzenberg Mountains. Many of the buildings in Pierneef’s tour de force of architectural observation were destroyed in a 1969 earthquake that ravaged the historical colony settlement of Tulbagh. Fortunately, the building on the right, previously named de Wet Huis and now Monbijou still stands. Dated 2017, Cinga Sampson’s Hliso Street V (estimate R2–3-million) depicts a costumed figure centrally posed in a verdant landscape emotionally linked to the artist’s youth. Part of a small series of portraits paying homage to the artist’s deceased mother, this breakthrough painting cemented Sampson’s enigmatic, magical-realist approach to describing place and history. It was first exhibited at the 2017 edition of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair.

“Curatorial Voices: African Landscapes, Past and Present will showcase collectable art by pioneering modernist and trailblazing contemporary artists occupied with portraying the land,” says Jean le Clus-Theron, joint head of sale, Strauss & Co. “Our headline offerings by JH Pierneef and Cinga Samson showcase how the landscape theme is dynamically open to interpretation. These works not only explore the continent’s physical representation, but also delve into cultural and sociopolitical themes rooted in African history.” Painted in 1929, when the artist was at the height of his public acclaim, JH Pierneef’s Church Street, Tulbagh (estimate R1.5–2.5-million) shows a gravel roadway

“Curatorial Voices: African Landscapes, Past and Present will coincide with the 2024 edition of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair and will be broadcast globally through our auction platforms, such as Invaluable,” says Leigh Leyde, joint head of sale, Strauss & Co. “This offers an unparalleled opportunity to reach a wide and influential audience precisely when the world’s attention is focused on Cape Town. Curatorial Voices: African Landscapes, Past and Present is a platform for both established and emerging artists, allowing them to showcase their work and garner attention for the fair.” In the build-up to the auction, Strauss & Co will once again be hosting an international symposium focused on current art debates in Africa during Cape Town art week. Says Leyde: Curatorial Voices: African Landscapes, Past and Present is a necessarily ambitious initiative with an objective to unite across continents. Our vision for this annual project is to present a compelling auction around a robust theme that is attractive to collectors, as well as provide an educational platform that is the source of lively debates from an African perspective. Our vision is to strengthen our local art ecosystem, emphasising the extraordinary power and beauty of African art.”

TO THE UK Goodman Gallery presents a series of new paintings by Cape Town-based artist Marsi van de Heuvel, titled Skoonveld. For these works, the malleable medium of paint is deployed to explore the act of fading as part of the artist’s broader interest in what it means to belong to a place, a family and a particular culture. Marsi van de Heuvel’s painting practice investigates a personal familial history as part of a broader reflection of the history of South Africa. Her work specifically explores themes related to place and the complexities around a shared sense of belonging. Van de Heuvel graduated with a Fine Art Diploma from the Ruth Prowse School of Art, Cape Town, in 2010. For more information, visit www.goodman-gallery.com

SALUT!

‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE MALTY Spoil the whisky lover in your life this festive season with one of these tantalising tipples. By ANTHONY SHARPE

EDAIG 18-YEAR-OLD SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY With a population of fewer than 3 000 permanent residents, the Isle of Mull in Scotland is home to four castles and two distilleries. Tobermory Distillery, perched on the seafront in the picturesque little town from which it takes its name, produces this extraordinary, extra-peaty single malt, ageing it in sherry casks to imbue it with fruity, nutty layers that offset its rich smokiness. There’s orange peel, tobacco, coffee and peat smoke on the palate with a liquorice and peat smoke finish (seriously, this is very peaty stuff). Did we mention that the Whisky Exchange named it their Whisky of the Year 2023? RRP: R1 700

A gorgeous deep amber whisky decked out in red and gold, The Accord just looks festive. It tastes like it too, with a juicy red berry flavour complemented by a comforting butterscotch. Tell the recipient it’s made by combining whiskies matured in American oak bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry casks, and they’ll figure you did your research. Tell them it was rated one of the world’s finest at the 2023 International Whisky Competition, and they’ll feel just plain special. RRP: R1 800

For that special someone who likes a little more Murica in their tipple, there’s one of the finest bourbons on the market. Blanton’s has had a reputation for producing consistently delicious bourbon for years, maturing it in a heat-trapping warehouse that speeds up the ageing process. The result is a well-rounded spirit with fruit, caramel, dark tobacco and wood on the nose, more caramel on the palate along with vanilla and a healthy dose of smoky rye spice, and a sweet heat that lingers in your mouth after every sip. The bottle will also stand out on your shelf like an ornament. RRP: R720

KAVALAN SOLIST PORT SINGLE CASK STRENGTH SINGLE MALT When you think of proud whisky-producing nations, Taiwan probably doesn’t top the list. But thanks to Taiwanese distiller Kavalan, it should. This port cask beauty was the only non-Irish whisky awarded platinum this year by the Beverage Testing Institute. Light amber, medium-full in body, both fruity and savoury and with a finish that lingers longer than the wrapping paper all over the lounge floor, this is a hefty whisky with an equally hefty price tag for the real aficionado. RRP: R4 499

BOPLAAS SINGLE MALT 6-YEAR-OLD SINGLE CASK (VINTAGE PORT CASK) There was a time when more patriotic whisky drinkers were confined to products from the James Sedgwick distillery (none of which are to be sniffed at), but no more. Calitzdorp’s Boplaas has been honing its craft for the past 10 years, and celebrated that fact this year with the release of its second single malt. If you’d previously only heard of Boplaas for their delectable port, you might be interested to know this single malt has the distinction of being one of the few whiskies in the world matured in casks once used for port made by the same producer. RRP: R1 200

SOUTH AFRICAN FINE WINE ENHANCES PORTFOLIO GROWTH A recent study by Stellenbosch University reveals that “South African wines could serve as a valuable addition to a broader investment strategy”, writes STRAUSS & CO

It was founded in 2019 by Wine Cellar Fine Wine Merchants, sommelier Higgo Jacobs and Africa’s leading art auction house, Strauss & Co. Wine Cellar stores over 500 000 bottles of fine wine in professional conditions in Cape Town and has been offering wine investment portfolios since 2018.

Transactions from Strauss & Co Fine Wine Auctions and Wine Cellar’s brokerage platform provided meaningful data for the South African secondary market for the first time. The SA Top 10 Fine Wine Index was constructed and analysed (with wines selected based on liquidity and scores) along with the Liv-ex Fine Wine 100

– the international benchmark index of the world’s most traded fine wines. Employing a repeat-sales, regression methodology with modern portfolio theory, a portion of both the Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 and the SA Top 10 Fine Wine Index increased growth rate and decreased portfolio volatility. “Wine generally contributes positively to portfolio growth and risk-adjusted returns, as evidenced by the growth rate,” concludes the University of Stellenbosch study. It follows international wine investment studies that examined data from the United States, Australia, Bordeaux and internationally through Liv-ex – the global marketplace for the wine trade. These revealed that wine prices were generally uncorrelated to the stock market and outperform bonds and often equities. Wine is less liquid than other assets, however, and therefore prices can be more stable over longer periods. Other studies also revealed that producer, reputation and critic ratings were important to price growth. “The wine market has received attention not only from the stakeholders (producers and consumers), but also from the financial world, particularly from speculators and fund managers specialised in alternative investment,” says researcher and author Dr Mesias Alfeus, lecturer of statistics and actuarial science at Stellenbosch University. “Notably, we have found that the inclusion of wines effectively contributes to risk reduction and portfolio diversification. These favourable outcomes suggest that South African wines could serve as a valuable addition to a broader investment strategy.”

hile South Africa has a small fine wine market, the Cheers to Enhanced Portfolio Performance: Wine as a Unique Asset Class study has found that South African fine wine has a favourable influence on portfolio growth and diversification. The study recognises the positive value of wine as an alternative asset class. Fine wine has gained popularity as an alternative investment over the past two decades as trading platforms have developed, increasing market information and liquidity. “Fine wines are those that trade on the secondary market. The consumer finds value in holding onto fine wines rather than drinking them immediately. Fine wines are long-term assets, priced in hard currency,” explains Roland Peens, director of Wine Cellar, CEO of Wine Business Advisors, and Strauss & Co wine specialist. The global fine wine market is estimated at over R100-billon, and the trend is driven by an increase in high-net-worth individuals, globalisation and liquidity. The study aimed to develop a Top 10 index and analyse its impact on an investment portfolio. This comprises the most liquid, high-scoring wines from South Africa.

WW

Wine farm

The SA Top 10 Wine Index was constructed according to liquidity, by both volume and value, as well as a five-year average of Tim Atkin MW scores. Considering 2 756 transactions, two-thirds of which were for red wine, it resulted in the SA Top 10 Fine Wine Index: Sadie Family Columella, Kanonkop Paul Sauer, Porseleinberg, Klein Constantia Vin de Constance, Sadie Family Palladius, Meerlust Rubicon, Boekenhoutskloof Syrah, Vilafonté Series C, Sadie Family Skurfberg, and Alheit Family Makstok. Wines within the index have returned 80-plus per cent over four years, taking into consideration storage and brokerage fees.

EXPERIENCE ERNIE ELS WINERY

The tasting room at Ernie Els Wines.

Situated in the renowned Golden Triangle of Stellenbosch, Ernie Els Winery first opened its doors in 2005. Almost two decades later, it still captures the essence of the Helderberg. Winemaker Louis Strydom’s fondness for Cabernet Sauvignon wines and blends made the location a natural choice. Ernie Els agrees, adding: “The recent renovations of the winery make it a go-to destination for wine lovers and it’s certainly one of the highlights of my off-season.” The winery experience begins as you approach the grand granite boulders at the entrance and continues through to the tasting room and restaurant and the not-to-be-missed trophy room, which showcases the accomplishments of the golfing legend, and a visit to the modern Vinotheque where older vintages are all available for purchase. For further information visit www.ernieelswines.com

Pairing the cool climate elegance of Durbanville Sauvignon Blanc 2023 with a seafood symphony promises a memorable dining experience. This white wine, graced with citrus, green apple, and herbal nuances, provides a harmonious companion for zesty prawns, Saldanha Bay mussels and a vinaigrette rocket salad. Commence with succulent zesty prawns, kissed by the grill and bathed in a citrus-infused marinade. The wine’s citrus notes complement the prawns’ tangy flavours, creating a lively duet on the palate. Meanwhile, the green apple undertones provide a delicate sweetness that contrasts beautifully with the prawn’s savoury profile. Saldanha Bay mussels, steamed in an aromatic broth, find their perfect partner in this cool-climate wine. Its herbal hints complement the mussels’ briny character, infusing each bite with a fresh and invigorating quality. The vinaigrette rocket salad, with its crisp and refreshing demeanour, completes this gastronomic ensemble. The wine’s acidity and herbal notes elegantly mingle with the salad’s vinaigrette, accentuating the peppery zest of the rocket. In this culinary and vinous journey, the Durbanville Sauvignon Blanc 2023 shines as the cool climate virtuoso, elevating the distinct qualities of each dish while imparting its vivacious coastal spirit to the overall experience. It’s a celebration of South African coastal cuisine, perfectly complemented by this exceptional wine.

What’s all this about Carménère? The variety’s spiritual home is the Médoc region of Bordeaux. Since then, it has spread to many other famous wine regions. In South Africa, Wikipedia specifically names Lozärn Wines as “the champion” for Carménère. Doornbosch Farm is ideal for Carménère, which thrives at higher altitudes that experience long, warm summers. Very much like the other Bordeaux cultivars, it produces methoxypyrazine, which can easily overpower the wine. Warmer sites reduce this possibility, so the Robertson Wine Valley and shale hillocks around Bonnievale are a great fit. It’s the reason Carménère is the foundation of the Lozärn portfolio. Here’s what everyone needs: a simple pairing of prawn, coconut and tomato curry. It’ll take just 10 minutes to prepare and 20 minutes to cook. The reason it works well with the Carménère Rosé is the meeting of spice aromatics prevalent in both the dish and the wine, and the wine’s balanced acidity and notes of juicy berries.
