“I love You” Money This month, I want to share a new budgeting idea that my husband and I came up with for couples. It's great to have a little bit of "fun money" to spend however you please each month, but we both also like being able to buy some little things to surprise each other. One of Jeff's top love languages is gifts, so he really likes getting and giving them. But until recently, we didn't really have money set aside for things like that. Jeff would surprise me with flowers, and while I was delighted and appreciated the gesture, I couldn't help but wonder, What fund is this going to come out of? And while I liked getting small gifts for him while I was out and about, sometimes it would end up coming out of the grocery money, leaving us with less than we needed for food! It wasn't really a problem, per se—it just took away from what we knew could work better. So, we came up with this solution: I Love You money. Now, we have added a specific category in the budget for I Love You money. Mine to spend on him and his to spend on me are separate line items. We shuffled things around to find the extra cash, and it was definitely worth it! It's not much—just $10 or $15 for each of us depending on the month's other expenses, but we've enjoyed it so much! Some of Jeff's favorite things are bottled sodas and T-shirts. Being able to pick up something like that on my way home on Friday afternoon sets a fun tone for the weekend for both of us. Plus, we now pay more attention to the little things we each like to receive. Here are some I Love You money ideas for those who are single: Set aside $10 or $15 in a category to spend on people you love—a neighbor, friend, family member or coworker. It doesn't have to be the same person every time. While you probably have a "giving" fund and a "gifts" fund, this would be different—just money for little surprise treats for people you care about. It creates a new way to experience the joy of giving and helps you to be more aware of what says "I love you" best to people in your life. So, I hope you'll consider giving I Love You money a try!
