May 2012

From the Desk of the President Fellow Members & Apprentices,

I trust that everyone is having a great start to the season. According to the Performance Trak numbers from the PGA it looks like March was a great month in relation to March of 2011. I hope everyone shared in that success and I also hope we can keep the momentum going for the remainder of 2012 by building and promoting the game while getting more people playing the game. As you have probably heard, the decision about a new Executive Director has been made. The E.D. baton was handed to Dana Lehner on April 15th. He now has officially been on board for two major events, the Pro President and the SCAGA Four Ball. He has had numerous meetings with the staff, Executive Committees and others with busi-

ness with the Sun Country Golf House. He has already done a great job in giving the two Executive Boards several updates on the ongoing programs and seems to have a good handle on the operation of the Golf House. Thanks and welcome aboard, Dana!

basis it is easy to see that Scott, who has roots in New Mexico, has always looked after our best interests. Please make sure to thank Scott and anyone from Club Car the next time you see them and when possible give their team support in return.

Last week many of us participated in the 37th Pro President tournament. Congratulations to all of the winners, it was a great success! Thanks for a job well done goes to Mark Pelletier and his staff. A BIG thank you goes out to Scott Summers from Club Car for the tremendous efforts and support of the Pro President over the years as well as the many other events and Pro Ams he and Club Car have supported. From the Section level we know this support has been challenging over the last few years with the economic times as they are and we are very grateful for the continued sponsorship. When all this support is totaled on a Section

Once again I remind everyone of the request I made in the last newsletter. I asked each of you to look at ways to contribute through the Golf Marathon, the Golf Pass and the SC Junior Tour. That support and involvement from us as members is what keeps golf growing in the Sun Country. If golf grows we all thrive. Let’s thrive instead of just survive!! Thanks for supporting the Greatest Game! Until next time...Get out and play!

MSR POLICY CHANGES EFFECTIVE JUNE 16, 2012 New MSR policies will go into effect June 16, 2012 and Cycle 14A end date will be extended to June 15, 2015. Here are some of the changes: •

Credit requirements will consist of two categories: (a) 54 Total Credits, (b) 36 of which must be from PGA Meeting/Education and/or Golf 2.0/Player Development. (a) Total Credits (54): A total of 54 credits must be earned, with at least 36 credits earned from the required category (PGA Meeting/PGA Education/Golf 2.0/Player Development), while the other means of obtaining credits toward the total requirement remain per the prior program. (b)PGA Meeting/Education: The credit category for Meetings and PGA delivered education (Chapter, Section, National) are now combined and all will be awarded one (1) credit per hour of participation. This means that any gathering of Members organized by a Section/Chapter or National, whether for governance, education, or both will be treated the same way. Other education pro-

vided by sources outside of the PGA will apply to the Total. (b)Golf 2.0/Player Development:The credits for Golf 2.0/Player Development will be earned via reporting actual creation, activation and engagement of golfers into the programming that supports Golf 2.0 Initiatives and/or education and training on the strategic plan, its initiatives, and related program administration. Thus both green grass and non-green grass or executive level PGA Members can meet the requirement by becoming knowledgeable about Golf 2.0, its strategic initiatives, and its programs.

Welcome to Golf Month It’s New! It’s Fresh! It’s Golf 2.0 New for 2012, Welcome to Golf Month is a fresh approach that highlights our game as "fun and welcoming" and encourages current players to "bring a friend or family member" to play golf. Be part of a promotion that gives new golfers a taste of just how much fun golf can be. During Welcome to Golf Month, you have the flexibility to offer what you believe are the best ways to make golf fun and welcoming. You are asked to provide a minimum of four hours of complimentary instruction, which can include 10-minute lessons, Get Golf Ready clinics, Welcome to Golf Days, Family Days and Mother's Day specials and Bring a Friend events. Use Welcome to Golf Month to showcase how welcoming and friendly your facility is for players of all abilities. You should also consider hosting additional programs to grow your business, such as Get Golf Ready. While Welcome to Golf Month is promoted nationally in May, facilities are encouraged to host programs throughout the year as your schedule and local market permits. All facilities that register for Welcome to Golf Month will receive a collateral kit, and PGA members are eligible to earn 4 MSR credits for hosting this promotion. Register now on or

Is Your Facility Signed Up for Get Golf Ready? On April 29, CBS ran a special on the PGA of America’s Get Golf Ready program, highlighting the benefits of golf and how simple it can be to get started. Get Golf Ready was developed to teach new golfers in five short lessons and prepare them to get onto the golf course with confidence. Offering "play" experiences is what makes this program unique as each lesson is designed to include on-course activities and transition students to structured Get Golf Ready Outings as ongoing retention opportunities. Only 3 facilities in Sun Country have Get Golf Ready events scheduled. Is your facility on that list? If not, it’s time to step up and join the Golf 2.0 Growth of the Game efforts! The PGA provides everything you need when you register, including a program manual, promotional materials, and advertising on It’s flexible and easy to integrate into existing programs.

I can’t see why every golf professional that wants to attract new golfers or increase lesson revenue wouldn’t utilize the resources provided through Play Golf America and GGR. We are finishing up our second session this week and will continue sessions through October.
