W E L C OM E COLLECTIONS WINTER 2021 — Typically when I sit down and write this letter, I'm sharing excitement for the winter season, welcoming the visitors flocking to Utah's world-renowned resorts and sharing words of gratitude for the clients who entrust us. This year is different, so this letter most certainly should be. What we have all experienced since the last printing of Collections Magazine will live in history books for years to come. Some of us have lost loved ones in the global pandemic, others have been uprooted in a search for serenity and safety. We've experienced division and immense waves of uncertainty. It has been during these times that I've been reminded of what really matters in life and how lucky I am to call Utah my home and to call Summit Sotheby's International Realty my work family. When the world seemed to be falling apart, the management, sales associates and support staff of Summit Sotheby's International Realty banded together in a way that I honestly cannot describe. The outcome has been that despite all of the odds, this company has managed to continue to break records, has led in one of the most complex real estate markets of my career and has maintained its identity of providing a luxury experience for all, regardless of area, price point or real estate need. I'm humbled that you're reading this and holding the newest edition of our Collections Magazine. A magazine, that a year ago was no doubt an incredible marketing piece – but now seems to represent so much more. Now, it feels like a tangible representation of the perseverance, hard work and dedication of Utahns, of our remarkable support staff and of a brand that is about so much more than real estate. Autumn’s peak has passed and the aspen trees on the surrounding hills display an assortment of foliage mixed with bare branches, a few trees stoically hanging on to a lingering combination of warm, golden yellows and rich orange hues. The dappled sunlight races over ski lifts that stand motionless, waiting for winter’s rush. There’s a stark beauty to this in-between season—a quiet sense of expectancy. One season ends, another begins. The golden hour. The mountain lies at rest, taking a deep breath in eager anticipation of the winter season to come.


Below the quiet hillside, nestled neatly in the center of the village, lies the legendary Goldener Hirsch Inn—a charming and iconic part of Deer Valley®. Owned and lovingly run by Utah’s Spencer F. Eccles family since 1992, the Goldener Hirsch was modeled after its sister hotel in Salzburg, Austria and is renowned for its personalized service. It was recently named the United States’ Best Ski Boutique Hotel by the World Ski Awards yet again, a distinction it has received the last three years. This winter, the Inn celebrates the beginning of a new chapter in its storied history with the opening of its newly completed Residences, 40 luxurious contemporary condominiums built on the last remaining parcel in Silver Lake Village. Described as a ‘modern interpretation of a mountain ski lodge’, the new Goldener Hirsch Residences are connected to the original Inn by an elevated bridge and outdoor plaza—symbolically spanning place, generations and time, and providing an exceptional experience unlike anything ever offered in Deer Valley®. The Eccles Family has been a part of Utah for more than 150 years and their roots and devotion run deep. Lisa and Katie each run several of the family foundations that have enriched life in Utah, while Spencer P. leads a private equity firm and Hope has been responsible for the operations of the Goldener Hirsch since the beginning. An All-American skier for the University of Utah in the 1950’s, Mr. Eccles raised his family skiing and enjoying the mountains of Utah. He was recognized for his critical contribution to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City receiving the Pierre de Coubertin Medal (the first Gold Medal of the Games) while his son, Spencer P., was responsible for the downhill venue and races. It is clear that the Eccles’ passion for alpine living has been passed down through generations of his family and is only exceeded by the genuine warmth of his wife, Cleone, whose legacy of gracious hospitality set the tone for the guest experience at the Goldener Hirsch Inn. 16

While the vision for the Goldener Hirsch expansion project has been in the works for almost 30 years, plans for construction began in earnest in 2014. Designed by worldrenowned architect Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig and complemented with sophisticated and engaging interiors by Todd Avery Lenahan of TAL Studio, the new luxury Residences blend modern architecture in an alpine landscape with refined interior design. To lead the project, the Eccles family recruited Christopher M. Conabee and the Utah Development and Construction, LLC, a development company owned jointly by Spencer P. Eccles, Chris and Brett Okland. John Shirley of Think Architecture and Okland Construction, both known for their high-end resort developments, were chosen to bring Kundig’s vision to life—no small feat. Tom Kundig is known for his elemental approach to design, using rugged raw materials left in their natural states to evolve over time, like a fine patina, with exposure to weather and human touch. The importance Kundig places on context is boldly evident with the elements of steel, cedar and concrete featured prominently against walls of tall windows open to views of the surrounding mountains. Highlights include the breathtaking rooftop pool, cantilevered hot tub and the magical plaza bridge as well as the delightful Antler Lounge and charming konditerei (German for cafe)—all of which create a vibrant sense of community. The contrast of the Residences to the traditional European style of the Inn was intentional, an iconic statement that complements and builds upon the Inn’s unique charm which is the heart of Silver Lake Village. This concept of “wayfinding” and connection are evident throughout the project, as is the delicate “art of the experience” that guests enjoy as they turn corners to discover highlights of design, colorful details and textures that echo the rich history of the Inn. Interior designer Todd-Avery Lenahan of TAL Studio, working closely with Lisa and Katie, achieved this with their deliberate choices infusing layers upon layers of warmth and texture into everything from custom hand-painted wall coverings to unique furnishings. The refinement and sophistication are further enhanced by the works of art from the Eccles private collection, all carefully curated by Lisa and Katie with the help of Evalyn Daniel-Putnam of Daniel Fine Art Services. Vintage Austrian maps, custom tapestries, a photographic ski mural of Spencer F. and original paintings by regional and Utah artists grace the walls, while unique furnishings such as an antique hand-carved Black Forest clock, commissioned sculptures and a contemporary treatment of authentic Austrian cowbells will surprise and delight the most discriminating guest. It's living, breathing art that ties back into the traditional history of the existing Hirsch—'wayfinding’ indeed. The family has been intimately involved throughout the entirety of the development. It is evident from the way they speak about the lasting legacy of the Goldener Hirsch that this is their home and their passion; it's an important piece in their family legacy. After nearly 30 years in the making, an unwavering vision born from the Inn’s rich heritage shines brightly in the new luxury Residences, and owners and guests alike will feel like they are welcomed home each time they enter through its signature red steel front door. And so, a new season begins, another chapter in the story. It’s a new golden hour for Deer Valley's® iconic Goldener Hirsch.
