Welcome to Summersdale: Something for Everyone Summersdale is celebrating 21 years of creative independent publishing. We hope that the fun we have with our unique list is reflected in the books. We’ve seen huge growth in the media coverage that our books receive and in the variety of retailers placing orders. We’d like to thank the writers and artists, the press and the trade, and everyone else in between for helping us to keep doing what we love. Our inspiring new travel titles this season will take you for lunch in Paris, on a whistle-stop tour of Europe’s new hotspots by fast trains, across Russia in a VW van and, perhaps most challenging of all, around Britain with two small children. Our humour and gi range offers instant entertainment and plenty of laughs on all manner of subjects, such as sports, nostalgia, pets, gardening, getting older and language, while Knit the City will ensure that you never look at knitting in the same way again. Digital publishing has become an exciting reality, and we are intent on building on our already well-established e-book presence to meet the demands of this emerging market. Simultaneously, we feel it’s more important than ever to experiment with new formats and make the physical book so distinctive that it will stand out, while keeping prices realistic. We always seek to strengthen our ties with existing customers and reach out to new markets at home and internationally. A big THANK YOU from all the Summersdale team for your continued support. Tales from the Fast Trains Europe at 186 mph Tom Chesshyre ISBN: 978 1 84953 151 1 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback July 2011 Rights and Sales Territories: World English

The train pulls away, and the feeling of being on holiday, of getting away from it all, hits us immediately. Psychotic bus drivers, overheated underground carriages, crowds and London in general seem somehow distant, as though by boarding the train we’ve stepped into another country. From shiny London St Pancras, Tom travels to places that wouldn’t feature on a standard holiday wish list and discovers the hidden delights of destinations such as mysterious Luxembourg, super-trendy Rotterdam, much-maligned Frankfurt and lovely lakeside Lausanne. It’s 186 mph all the way – well, apart from a power cut in the Channel Tunnel on the way to Antwerp. How much fun can you have at the ends of the lines? Jump on board and find out… Tom Chesshyre is staff travel writer on The Times and lives in London. He is the author of How Low Can You Go? Round Europe for 1p Each Way (Plus Tax) and To Hull and Back: On Holiday in Unsung Britain, ISBN: 978 1 84954 060 6.

‘splendid twenty-first-century railway adventure. At last, this IS the age of the train’ Simon Calder ‘If you’ve "done" Paris and Bruges and are wondering, "Where next?", then this may be a quiet revelation. Great fun’ Andrew Marr ■ High-speed trains are the ‘big thing’ in travel now, avoiding nightmare airline queues while also being greener. Media opportunities: photos available; extracts/ serialisation. Feature angles: why are European trains better than ours?; how far can you go by train in a weekend?; weekend breaks without airport hassles. Author is available for interview and to write features/articles.

Lunch in Paris A Delicious Love Story, with Recipes Elizabeth Bard ISBN: 978 1 84953 154 2 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback July 2011 Rights and Sales Territories: UK, ROI and Commonwealth excluding Canada and ANZ

Has a meal ever changed your life?

‘This is amazing,’ I said. ‘You have to give me the recipe.’ ‘There is no recipe,’ he said, smiling. ‘I use whatever I have. It never tastes the same way twice.’ I had no way of knowing, that first damp evening in Paris, how this man, and his non-recipes, would change my life. Part love story, part wine-splattered cookbook, Lunch in Paris is a deliciously tart, forthright and funny tale of falling in love with a Frenchman and moving to the world’s most romantic city – not the Hollywood version, but the real Paris, a heady mix of blood sausage, pains aux chocolats and irregular verbs. Peppered with recipes, this is the perfect treat for anyone who has ever suspected that lunch in Paris could change their life. Elizabeth Bard is an American journalist and art historian based in France. She has written for The New York Times, Wired and Time Out, and she writes a popular blog.

■ Lunch in Paris has been a New York Times and international bestseller, with rights sold in eight countries and more than 60,000 copies already in print. ■ Elizabeth’s recipes bring the tastes of Paris direct to your kitchen. ■ Eat Pray Love meets Chocolat meets A Year in the Merde. Media opportunities: photos available; extracts/ serialisation – including fabulous authentic recipes. Feature angles: Paris, the most romantic city in Europe?; are French men sexier than British males?; cooking and eating together as a prelude to romance and more; moving abroad for love; life and love in the real Paris. Author is available for interview.

One Steppe Beyond Across Russia in a VW Camper Thom Wheeler ISBN: 978 1 84953 156 6 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback August 2011 Rights and Sales Territories: World

Travelling across the former Soviet Union is a challenge at the best of times – but in a dilapidated VDub… that’s got to be plain da… hasn’t it? A chance job offer at a timber yard in Estonia gives Thom and his pal Jo a taste for the unknown. So when Uncle Tony asks them to drive to Vladivostok for another job, they can’t think of a good reason why not. The result is a classic caper across the former Soviet Union in Max, a rusty old VW camper, traversing the wastelands of Siberia, skirting the vast expanses of Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China and on down to the Sea of Japan. Knowing little of the language or the geography ahead, they embark on probably the longest commute ever. Thom Wheeler studied Russian at university and returned to live in St Petersburg for several years to earn a living teaching and guiding, whilst also reviewing bands for the Russian Big Issue; he then lived and worked in Ukraine, Estonia and Georgia. He is now based in Brighton.

■ VW Van Clubs and year-round VW events have already expressed interest. ■ Russian societies and exchanges and general travel clubs will also be interested; Thom still runs an annual community theatre project outside St Petersburg. ■ Published in the twentieth anniversary year of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Media opportunities : extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: the old Soviet Union seen from a VW van; the appeal of overland journeys; the veneer of the USSR in the 90s: the real people, the real countryside and the real dangers of the times. The author is available for interview.

If you think writing a guideb ook is easy, think again… ‘Hurry up,’ I shout at the door, trying to speed Dinah back from her hotel tour, whilst on the overhead telly Ray Mears’ Survival is playing extraord inarily loudly because Charlie sat on the volume button of the remote. The kids writhe about in the V05, laughing as the last of their clean clothes bite the dust, and I’m thinking : ‘Survive driving round Eng land with two under 5s, staying at a different hote l each night and visiting four or five attractions a day and sometimes a restaurant in the evening. Sleep all in the same room, go to bed at 7 p.m. aer having had no evening to yourself, wake up at 7 a.m. and do it all again the next day with the prospect of another 140 nights of the same – then come and tell me abo ut survival in your khaki fucking shorts, Ray.’

They were bored, broke, burned out and turning 40, so when Ben and Dinah saw the adve rt looking for a husband and wife team with you ng kids to write a guidebook about family travel arou nd Britain, they jumped at the chance. With naive visio ns of staring moodily across Coniston Water and savo uring Cornish pasties, they embark on a madcap five-month trip with daughter Phoebe, four, and son Charlie, nine months, embracing the freedom of the open road with a spirit of discovery and an indu strial supply of baby wipes.

Everyman’s England Victor Canning Introduction by Charles Collingwood ISBN: 978 1 84953 169 6 £9.99 135x204mm 256pp Hardback August 2011 Rights and Sales Territories: UK and Commonwealth excluding Canada; non-exclusive throughout the rest of the world

I travelled from King’s Cross to Berwick-on-Tweed in a sleeper on the nightexpress for no other reason than that I like to read in bed and, at the same time, feel that I am being rushed forward at a tremendous speed.

‘wonderful… elegant, humorous, exuberant essays about random destinations’ Sue Arnold, THE GUARDIAN

In this series of pen-portraits of England, commissioned by the Daily Mail in the 1930s, Victor Canning vividly conjures the pattern and colour of the ‘great fabric of English life’ from Cumberland to Cornwall. His heart-warming, humorous and oen irreverent observations of sleepy villages, pastoral scenes and busy industries provide a delightful insight into life between the wars.

■ 2011 is the centenary of Canning’s birth. Long out of print, Everyman’s England is a classic that will appeal to fans of H. V. Morton.

Victor Canning (1911–1986), best known as a thriller writer, wrote more than 60 books, many of which have been filmed. Charles Collingwood is a British actor renowned for his role as Brian Aldridge in the BBC Radio 4 soap opera The Archers.

■ Taps into widespread current interest in English tourism and the identity of communities. Media opportunities: extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: England between the wars; centenary of the author’s birth: profiles of his works and the films they spawned; then and now features examining how England changed in 70 years. Charles Collingwood is available for interview.

FOR QUEEN AND COUNTRY

COURAGEOUS CANINES

My little dog – a heartbeat at my feet. Edith Wharton

In World War Two dogs were trained to perform sophisticated tasks for special missions, working as messengers, sentry dogs and even mine detectors. Judy, an English pointer, was recruited to serve on a Royal Navy vessel due to her ability to hear hostile aircraft long before any of the human crew. Unfortunately, the vessel she was assigned to sank during a battle and the crew were captured. Judy somehow gained access to the POW camp where they were held and helped the men by fetching them scraps of food. Despite the best efforts of the Japanese prison guards to shoot her, Judy managed to escape and, thanks to the efforts of one RAF serviceman, Frank Williams, she was registered as an official prisoner of war – the only animal in history to receive this status.

Yet, my pretty sportive friend, Little is’t to such an end That I praise thy rareness! Other dogs may be thy peers Haply in these drooping ears, And this glossy fairness.

■ Quotable Dogs, ISBN: 978 1 84024 537 0, and Quotable Cats, ISBN: 978 1 84024 536 3, by the same author have sold 70,000 copies.

But of thee it shall be said, This dog watched beside a bed Day and night unweary Watched within a curtained room, Where no sunbeam brake the gloom Round the sick and dreary. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, From ‘To Flush, My Dog’

BACKSWING TO THE FUTURE

B ACKSWING TO FUTURE

THE

A SLICE OF HISTORY The question of when and where golf was invented is a difficult one to answer. Who can be sure of the exact moment that someone first used a stick to hit a ball into a hole? The earliest records of golf vary. Differing historians have suggested the Romans with their game pagancia, in which participants used a stick to hit a stuffed leather ball further than a smaller sized, heavier ball, was the original precursor to the game, spread through Europe with the expansion of the Roman Empire. Other evidence suggests that the Chinese game chuiwan was the first example of a golf-like game. A painting from the fifteenth century, showing the Ming Emperor Xuande holding a club-like implement, on a square pitch with flags marking holes into which a ball was driven, can be seen at the Forbidden City Museum in Beijing.

Golf was never meant to be an exact science. Einstein was lousy at it. Bob Toski

14

What we are sure of is that golf in its modern form originated from Scotland. The first written record of golf here appears in 1457 when King James II banned the sport as it apparently distracted the military from practising archery. No doubt he’d be slightly miffed to learn that today the Old Course at St Andrews is known as the ‘home of golf’, the only bows likely to be seen being those resulting from a frustrated golfer taking their anger out on one of their irons!

Office Olympics Tom Hay ISBN: 978 1 84953 180 1 £6.99 125x175mm 128pp Paperback Black and white illustrations September 2011 Rights and Sales Territories: World

It’s time to go for gold in the Office Deskathlon…

■ Funny instructional diagrams depict the apparatus used and how the game is played.

The Olympics are coming – but how can you get into the spirit of things when you’re stuck in the office? Show off your sporting skills and challenge your colleagues to an Email Relay, a round of Eraser High Bounce and a bout of Biro Javelin! Just don’t let your boss find out where all those paper clips went.

■ Will appeal to office workers and anyone who would like a little Olympic magic without having to get hot and sweaty!

Apparatus: An A4 sheet of waste paper A waste paper bin

Warm Up: Chances are you’re familiar with the technique for this game already, especially if you’ve had to put up with your office bin being out of reach or in the corner of the room somewhere. Scrunch up the piece of waste paper to use as the ball (shared by all contenders) and place the empty waste paper bin upright and away from the wall – rebound shots aren’t allowed!

Going for Gold

How to Play: Contenders must attempt to successfully throw the ball into the bin from a set distance. The distance between the thrower and the bin should increase at intervals, and as soon as a throw is missed the contender is out. Gold for the winner only, being the person who scores a successful throw from furthest away.

If you’re running out of floor space to increase the distance between the goal and the shooter, take it to the next level by downsizing the apparatus: use an A5 paper ball and a coffee mug for the goal – that should sort the hotshots from the peashooters.

No contender is permitted to play with their own balls. 8

From the secret art of curtain twitching to how to pimp your mobility scooter, The Old-Timers’ Guide to Life offers top tips on how to indulge in those pleasurable pastimes that only silver surfers and golden oldies truly understand. Now’s the time to revel in blue rinses and hogging the slow lane – you’ve earned it!

However, it is a huge fire hazard with that dangling cigarette, and your new boy racer friends won’t want to hang out with a giant condom on four pram wheels – think pimp, not blimp.

Gardens, in my view, oen involve too much gardening. This is partly to do with the nature of human beings, who will make a competition out of anything if they possibly can. Edward Enfield has only ever had one garden, but his dealings with it have extended over half a century. He came to his three-quarters of an acre knowing nothing about growing anything, and this book is an account of his horticultural successes and failures, inventions and frustrations, discoveries and developments. With wry humour, he leads us through the thorny subject of roses, counts the blessings of keeping chickens and exposes the perfidy of gardening copywriters, while offering wise and witty tips on how best to enjoy the fruits of your labour. Edward Enfield has written for publications including the Daily Express, The Guardian, The Oldie and The Sunday Telegraph, and has appeared on television in Watchdog and Points of View. He lives in West Sussex.

In 1894, Ruth Smythers, ‘Beloved wife of The Reverend L. D. INTERNET DATING TIPS How to interpret a dating profile photo:

Would you touch me, so I can tell my friends I’ve been touched by an angel?

NO PHOTO: Looks-wise, I’m more National Geographic than Nuts.

ODDLY POSITIONED WEBCAM PHOTO: I spend at least five hours a day trawling dating websites, in between playing World of Warcraft and updating my Facebook page.

Ow! Sorry, I just hurt my knee, falling for you.

REVEALING TORSO SHOT: Don’t forget your toothbrush.

Did the sun come out or did you just smile at me?

TATTOOS AND PIERCINGS GALORE: Don’t forget your antiseptic.

CHIRPY POTRAIT SHOT: I’m an agreeable and largely normal person (as far as my photo goes). 22/03/2011 11:55:40

Feedback: enquiries@summersdale.com; www.twitter.com/SummersdaleJB. Disclaimer: All details are correct at time of going to print. Prices, specifications and availability are subject to change without prior notification. Journalists: to request review copies, images/photos and author interviews; to discuss serialisation/extracts or to organise reader offers, please contact our Publicity team. Festival/event organisers: to arrange author appearances, please contact Dean Chant – dean@summersdale.com.
