English language classes

Culture Club

Our English language classes are designed specifically for short-term language courses. With a maximum of 15 students per class, you will improve your English by focusing on speaking and listening.

Our English classes will improve your speaking skills and increase interaction and classroom participation. And, with many of our students going on to further education courses that will be conducted in English, we also run a series of lively lectures as an alternative to some of the sports and arts options. These allow you to practice the listening skills you will need in an academic environment.

Technology plays an increasingly important part in modern education. Many of our summer centres have classrooms equipped with data projectors, computers and, in some cases, interactive whiteboards. This enables us to use video, flipcharts and CD-ROMs in classes.

Trinity exam We are pleased to offer the opportunity to take the Trinity Graded Examination in Spoken English in the UK (see page 30 for full details). With 12 grades altogether, these one-to-one oral exams with a Trinity Examiner assess speaking and listening skills and link to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). They are suitable for all students looking to improve their English skills, from absolute beginner to proficient ability levels.

On site activities

Evening entertainment*

• 20 x 45 minute English language lessons per week (50 minutes in the USA) • Multi-national classes • Maximum class size of 15 students • Full board residential or homestay accommodation (hot lunch in college, packed lunch at the weekends and on trips) • Full excursion and activity programme • Learning materials (on loan) • End of course report and certificate • 24 hour emergency assistance

Our homestay programmes differ slightly from the residential programmes. In the UK a minimum of three evening activities per week are offered, while in Australia and Canada all evenings are spent with the host family.

Our supervised on site activities include sports (football tournament, swimming, basketball, badminton), arts and crafts, workshops, scavenger hunts, quizzes, and much more.

Themed weeks

In the evening you’ll be able to enjoy a huge variety of entertainment such as musical extravaganzas, talent and fashion shows, international nights, or even just the opportunity to enjoy the company of all your new found international friends.

A comprehensive range of supervised half and full day trips include outings to museums, theatre and other cultural excursions, as well as the opportunity to shop and sightsee in the world’s greatest cities, or enjoy areas of outstanding natural beauty and beach-side locations across England, USA, Canada and Australia.

Each week all lessons and activities will explore a particular theme – such as ‘Wild West’, ‘Harry Potter’, ‘the British Isles’, and more – and in this way students will have the chance to fully explore a variety of new and exciting topics.

Student welfare is paramount

Arrival in the country

StudyCare insurance

We offer a high standard of care and supervision to all our students. Each centre has a nominated welfare officer who ensures you are happy and well cared for throughout your stay. We also have a guardian system for our individual students in our junior centres. In addition, there are on-site first aiders and established links with local doctors, dentists and hospitals for any first aid issues that may arise.

Embassy Summer provides a meet and greet service for all students who have requested a transfer to the centre. All students under the age of 18 travelling to or from a centre must be accompanied by an adult. You will be met on arrival and taken to your accommodation. For students aged 18 or over, or those travelling with a parent or guardian, we will provide information and directions to the centre.

It is essential that all students travelling abroad have adequate insurance in case of a medical or other emergency. Embassy offers a comprehensive insurance policy called StudyCare which is specifically designed to meet the needs of international students. Please contact us for more details of this policy.

All students under the age of 18 should be aware that for all parts of their programme (lessons and activities) attendance is compulsory. Students under 18 will not be allowed to leave the centre unaccompanied at any time*.

Help during your stay On arrival at the centre, you will be welcomed by our staff and receive a full induction to enable you to settle in quickly and enjoy your stay with us. All students are issued with an ID Card during their stay, for which you should bring a passport photograph. Students must keep the ID Card with them at all times, it contains not only the address of the centre, but important telephone numbers should you require assistance. Students with any enquiries or problems can speak to our staff at the centre, or contact our 24-hour emergency telephone service.

The college was beautiful and the people were very funny. I will come back next year!

Medical conditions For the safety of all students and so that we may provide proper care, it is imperative that students make us fully aware of any medical or psychiatric conditions that are being treated. We reserve the right to refuse enrolments from students who we feel will not be able to participate fully in our programmes. Students who do not properly notify us of a condition may be excluded from the programme. Eligibility: Study Care: International Students, visiting Faculty, Scholars, or other persons between the ages of 12 and 65 who are temporarily residing outside their Home Country. The Insured must remain engaged in educational or research activities outside their Home Country during the Period of Coverage. How to book

Extra information

Your local agent We recommend that you book your course through one of the many Embassy Summer agents around the world. They have the information, knowledge and experience to answer your questions and help you make the right choice. They are also a useful contact point for you before you leave home.

Age limits There is a minimum and maximum age limit for some of the Embassy Summer schools, as indicated in the brochure. For applications outside the recommended age range, Embassy Summer will have the final decision. Students below the minimum age for a centre will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances. They must be accompanied by an adult leader who will take full responsibility for their safety and welfare, and they may not be included in classes unless there is a suitable class for them.

If you would like us to help you find your local agent, please contact us. Alternatively, you can book directly through our website embassyces.com/summer. Confirmation of enrolment We will process the booking and confirm your enrolment in writing to you, or your agent, and send you all the information you need. Homestay students will normally receive details of their accommodation one to two weeks before arrival. Special requests Students, or their agents, are welcome to make special requests regarding their programme or accommodation. Whilst every effort will be made to fulfil these requests, Embassy Summer cannot guarantee to be able to comply with every request, and such requests cannot be made a pre-condition of a booking with Embassy Summer. Payment You should make your payment to your agent or, if booking directly, by bank transfer direct to Embassy. Full details are included on the application form attached to this brochure. All payment must be received 14 days before students arrive. Transfers, accommodation or tuition will not be provided unless, full payment has been received. All bookings are made subject to our terms and conditions of booking. Start dates All courses start on Sunday with the academic programme commencing on Monday (except where indicated). Students should therefore plan to arrive on Sunday. Students or groups who join international programmes midweek may not be able to be integrated into international classes until the following Monday. Lessons In some centres lessons may take place either in the morning or afternoon and will normally alternate weekly. This means that students having lessons in the afternoon one week will normally have morning lessons the following week.

Embassy ICT Technology plays an increasingly important part in modern education and here at Embassy we endeavour to be market leaders. Many of the summer centres we use have classrooms equipped with data projectors, computers and, in some cases, interactive whiteboards. This enables us to include video, flipcharts and CD-ROMs into the lesson. Trinity examination We are pleased to offer students travelling to the UK the Trinity Examination in Spoken English at all of our centres. The cost for 2013 will be £70 per student for levels 1–6 and £100 per student for levels 7–12. This cost does not include preparation classes, however we can offer these at an additional cost of £25 per student for a total of three hours whilst at the centre. These classes will be run as group classes. Please note that the Trinity Examination is subject to a minimum number of 12 participants, and we are happy to advise you if that number has been reached at your chosen location. All Trinity Exam bookings must be submitted by 31 May 2013. General disclaimer Please note that the colleges and universities listed in the brochure, provide facilities only. The summer course is run by and for Embassy Summer and there is no connection with the colleges and universities, in terms of operations.

Terms and conditions All enrolments are subject to the following conditions which become legally binding on acceptance of enrolment by Embassy Summer. 1. Payment of fees All fees including application fee must be paid in full no later than 14 days before arrival. Transfers and accommodation will not be confirmed until all monies have been paid in full. 2. Services The company reserves the right to change the particulars of the services, including changes to courses, locations, accommodation, facilities and dates of the programmes where circumstances beyond the company’s control necessitate such changes or where the number of bookings received does not reach the minimum numbers required to operate a course viably. 3. General refund policy All refunds will be sent to the account of the Embassy representative to whom the fees were originally paid, or to the individual from whom Embassy has received the original direct payment, except in New Zealand where the refund will be paid directly to the student. If a student’s visa application is rejected after payment has been received all fees, excluding any cancellation fees detailed in the Cancellation Policy below, will be refunded within 28 days, provided a visa refusal letter is received by our International Admissions Centre at least 2 working days before the course is due to start and the student has fulfilled all requirements for a visa application. Students in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco must sign a California State Enrolment & Refund Agreement form. Refunds will be processed according to these terms and conditions. Australia In Australia this agreement, and the availability of complaints and appeals processes, does not remove the right of the student to take action under Australia’s consumer protection laws. Refunds will be provided to students within 28 days if the student defaults based on a visa denial provided the International Admissions Centre receive the visa denial letter. If the school defaults, the student is eligible to receive a refund of the unexpended pre-paid tuition fees which the student has paid to the school. The refund amount will be based on the portion of tuition for which the student has paid but for which tuition has not yet been received. In the unlikely event that the school is unable to deliver a course in full, the student will be offered the refund amount in accordance with the above paragraph. The refund will be paid within 14 days of the day on which the course ceased being provided. Alternatively, the student may be offered enrolment in a suitable alternative course by the school at no extra cost. The student has the right to choose whether they would prefer a full refund of course fees, or to accept a place on another course. If they choose placement on another course, Embassy will ask them to sign a document to indicate acceptance of the placement. If the school is unable to provide a refund or to place the student on an alternative course the Australian government’s Tuition Protection Scheme’s (TPS) director will provide access to a suitable alternative course.
