The Texas Education Agency is considering whether to investigate Stafford Municipal School District following allegations of nepotism in hiring practices made by a former board member and district employee. TEA spokesperson Melissa Holmes confirmed
the agency received a complaint about Stafford MSD. According to KPRC, the complaint alleged collaboration between Superintendent Robert Bostic, trustee Greg Holsapple and Sterling Staffing Solutions to employ their relatives while circumventing the state’s anti-nepotism laws. “We are currently reviewing the facts to determine if a formal investigation is necessary,”
Holmes said in an email Monday. Bostic and Holsapple were named in the allegations made by former SMSD Chief Financial Officer Daniel Flores, according to the October report by KPRC. Flores made the allegations in July after he left the district, citing a hostile environment when he first broached the issue with Bostic. At the core of the al-
legations is the hiring of Bostic’s wife and Holsapple’s daughter, who were previously employed by third-party staffing agency Sterling Staffing Solutions to perform clerical and professional development services within SMSD, according to the report. The district said in an August statement on its website that the relatives’ work

The saga of the “Sugar Land 95” has been contentious ever since their remains were discovered last year on the site of Fort Bend ISD’s James Reese Career and Technical Center. Despite the fact they may soon be laid to rest, unrest clearly remains. Fort Bend ISD officials and community members gathered Sunday night for a ceremony held in remembrance of the Sugar Land 95, whose remains were discovered at an abandoned and unmarked cemetery
at 12300 University Blvd. in Sugar Land. The remains are believed to have belonged to incarcerated African Americans leased to a local plantation through the state-sanctioned convict leasing program in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Some community members and elected officials have criticized FBISD for proceeding with the ceremony, which preceded its plan to rebury the remains at the site they were discovered. About 15 protesters lined the sidewalks just in front of the James Reese Career and Technical Center prior to Sunday’s gathering. Several were later escorted out of the

The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office is seeking help in finding a teenager reported missing from Fort Bend County. According to FBCSO, 19-yearold McKayla Kelly was last seen Nov. 12 in the 2700 block of Sage Bluff Avenue in Richmond. Police say Kelly is 5-foot-3 and

In high school sports, second chances at glory don't often present themselves. Now that they've earned theirs, the Ridge Point Lady Panthers are focused on completing the mission. "All I could think of is that we're not finished with our season. We still need to return to state and finish our business," senior setter Reagan Rutherford

MLB affiliation would raise Skeeters’ profile I’ve used this space on numerous occasions to talk about changing landscapes in Fort Bend County with regards to development, politics and other issues. This week, it’s a bit of the same song but a different verse in talking about a potential seismic shift for the area sports scene’s biggest player. According to a mid-October report from Baseball America, Major League Baseball has floated a proposal that, if adopted, would reduce affiliated Minor League Baseball from 160 teams to 120 beginning in the 2021 season due to some existing minor league outposts not meeting MLB standards for maintenance and operation of facilities. The contract between MLB and MiLB, as it stands now, expires at the end of the 2020 season. Ultimately, the report said MLB wants sweeping changes to leagues and affiliations, especially at the lower levels. Among

the cities and teams specifically mentioned in the report as those the league is interested in having become affiliated squads were our very own Sugar Land Skeeters, an unaffiliated franchise that competes in the Atlantic League. “We were flattered by the inclusion. We believe our mention was due to the excellent facilities at Constellation Field, our local and involved ownership, the strong relationship between the team and the city of Sugar Land, and our robust community support,” team president Christopher Hill said last week in a letter addressed to fans.
I think he’s right. I’ve attended many games and am impressed by the franchise’s ability to create attractions that extend beyond baseball to bring in those who might not even be baseball fans. There has certainly been no shortage of interest in the Skeeters in Fort Bend County and Greater Houston for that matter. Upon first taking the field in 2012, the team led the Atlantic League in both total and average game attendance in each of its first three seasons and hasn’t fallen below third place in either category since then. ““That’s what minor league baseball is all about – having fun, doing the quirky stuff, and fans are loving it. It’s all about listening to your fans,” Skeeters community engagement director Kyle Dawson said in an August interview with The Star. So, Sugar Land and the Skeeters appear to be a good fit for MiLB. But would MiLB be a good fit for Sugar Land? Hill and

Whether or not they had a sweet swing, those participating in a local golf tournament over the weekend could rest easy knowing it wasn’t all about who posted the lowest score. Dozens of novice and experienced golfers and community members came out to the Quail Valley City Centre and Golf Course early Saturday morning for the 13th annual Men For Change charity golf tournament. Since its inception in 1994, the Missouri City-based nonprofit has conducted fundraisers such as Saturday’s golf tournament for
the annual presentation of scholarships the organization gives out to Fort Bend County students. All proceeds from the tournament, which president Will Ross said is typically one of the organization’s most lucrative events, are funneled toward that goal. Men For Change also has partnered with MCS Personnel and Fort Bend ISD’s Marshall High School in an effort to help find employment for students and other local citizens. “We’re novices (at putting on a tournament), but I think our hearts are in the right place,” Ross said of the event, which raised $9,000 last year after taking a hiatus in 2017. “… Those who stay in the organization know it’s all

about our kids.” Exact figures aren’t yet known for this year’s fundraiser, but Men For Change member and former president Leon Jenkins – who helped organize the first tournament back in 1995 – said the organization expects to surpass last year’s total. At its peak, the fundraiser netted $40,000 in donations. “A lot of times, people think they have to be good golfers for this event to be a successful fundraiser, but we always try to emphasize that it’s not about the golf,” Jenkins said Saturday. “It’s all about the students here that we’re trying to help.” For more information on Men For Change, visit its website at men-for-change. org.

legitimacy to their sterling track record that includes helping former MLB pitcher Scott Kazmir (2012) and former Astros outfielder Jason Lane (2012-13) return to the big leagues. Among the contracts purchased this year were those of former Astros starting pitcher Felipe Paulino and former Philadelphia Phillies utility man Cody Asche. Ultimately, this may wind up just being me screaming into the wind depending on how negotiations between MLB and MiLB pan out in the coming months. But on its surface, affiliated baseball and the Skeeters both provide the other ample benefits if the partnership has the opportunity to materialize. The sky is the limit for an already successful Skeeters franchise, and an MLB affiliation would help them realize even more untapped potential, making them an even larger player in this region.

which currently is responsible for hiring and paying the players as well as facility upkeep and additional duties. If they were to become affiliated, whichever franchise they join would take over paying the players, freeing up ownership to spend more on marketing, promotions and more that would put butts in seats – thus aiding the symbiotic relationship the MLB says it wants in a minor league team. Now, for the players in the organization. In theory, having an MLB franchise attached to the Skeeters automatically provides a much-improved pipeline to the big leagues compared to players in independent leagues. The Skeeters already provide a better path to the big leagues than many other independent franchises – they are consistently among Atlantic League leaders in contracts purchased by MLB franchises and had 15 this season – it would no doubt give even more

the Skeeters have declined to publically comment on the matter with negotiations still in flux, but I think the possibility of affiliation is one fans, residents and the organization should be excited about. It would do wonders for the franchise. Sugar Land – and Constellation Field – are already jewels of Fort Bend County and the Houston region. The Skeeters are a known commodity in independent ball, having been to the Atlantic League Championship Series each of the last three seasons, while Constellation Field has been a coveted spots for numerous events and gatherings such as concerts and fundraisers. But, much like any independently-owned business – which is essentially what the Skeeters are – there are often partnerships needed to grow and expand your reach. Becoming an affiliated minor league franchise would ease the burden on Skeeters’ ownership,

Marshall’s mantra all season has been staying in the moment and taking care of business as it works its way back toward the state championship game in Arlington, where the Buffaloes fell just short of a state title last season. They are now one game closer to their goal after a dominating opening weekend in the UIL playoffs. The Buffaloes took control early and led wireto-wire in taking down Port Neches-Groves 4814 in a Class 5A Division II bi-district playoff game Friday night at Hall Stadium in Missouri City. Two first-half touchdown runs from highly touted recruit Devon Achane helped Marshall (10-1) take a 217 lead into halftime before putting the pedal to the metal in the second half and pulling away. Achane rushed for four touchdowns on the night, while quarterback Malik Hornsby added three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) as the dynamic backfield duo had one of their most prolific games of the season. Achane, a senior, has now rushed for 25 touchdowns on the sea-
son and has hit pay dirt 97 times during his illustrious career at Marshall. The Buffaloes were the only area team to advance past last week’s first round. Marshall now faces an area-round clash with A&M Consolidated (11-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Cy Fair ISD’s Pridgeon Stadium. Rutherford was a first-team selection, Jeter made the second team and defensive specialist Nia McCardell was a third-team pick. "The leadership (of the seniors) has been incredible to watch. They're hungry for the win they lost last year, and they want to get that redemption," first-year head coach Lauryn Bailey said. "Not only are they talented, but they're fun. We just have a good time together." Many of the Lady Panthers' seniors have been playing together since junior high. Over the last four seasons, the group has helped rack up 150 wins, brought home three consecutive District 206A championships and punched a postseason ticket every year. But one thing has been calling their name from the moment 2018 ended. "We know what we lost last year," Rutherford said. "Coming back this year, we just wanted it even more. We're just doing it and want it for each other." During its run to the state tournament, Ridge Point has taken down three district champions in Cinco Ranch, Pearland Dawson and Cy-Fair. And much like their regular season, the Lady Panthers have made it look like a breeze. Since losing their opening set of the playoffs to Katy Tompkins, they have reeled off 15 consecutive set wins. But Bailey insists it hasn't been as easy as the box scores would indicate. She knows the team has had a target on its back all year. "We already know everybody's going to come in
and give us their best shot," Bailey said. Silencing doubts Despite its run to the title match last season, there was some sentiment that the graduation of All-American Skylar Fields – now a freshman at the University of Texas – would cripple Ridge Point's hopes for a return trip to Garland. Not so fast. "Everyone felt like she was the whole team," Rutherford said. "I feel like we've come back and proved them wrong so far. We're good enough to win state with this team." Added McCardell: "It's one player, and it's a big loss. But having everyone else come together to fill that role has been awesome." The road to Garland hasn't come without its share of bumps, however. Rutherford, Jeter and Bailey all pointed to midseason defeats at the hands of Klein and Clear Brook as wakeup calls.
McCardell, meanwhile, targeted the Lady Panthers' regional semifinal victory over Pearland Dawson as a seminal moment for more reasons than one. "Early on in the season, we had some losses we probably shouldn't have, so that made us realize what we want and how hard we need to work," Jeter said. McCardell echoed the sentiment. "We had a lot of people doubting us. We came out strong and swept (Dawson), so I feel like that gave us a lot more motivation and energy," she said. The time is now for the Lady Panthers to see the fruits of that motivation and those grueling hours in the gym. As one pack they press ahead, with a single goal in mind -- finish the job. "There wasn't a team that handed it to us. They fought," Bailey said. "But these girls want to run through anybody who gets in their way."

FBISD announced in July that it had reached an agreement to convey the land to the county and pay the county $1 million to help cover costs associated with reinterring the remains. But
since pulling that monetary offer, negotiations with the county have stalled. The county has long wanted judicial involvement, but FBISD has said that is unnecessary and would be more costly to taxpayers. An Oct. 3 opinion issued by an appellate court sided with the school district, which has proceeded with its plan for reinternment. “I stand with activists and colleagues who have persisted in this fight in
calling for the cancellation of this event as well as the reburial and strongly urge the district to work with the appropriate Fort Bend County leaders to consummate their original agreement,” U.S. Rep. Al Green said in statement released prior to the ceremony. County Judge KP George did not attend the ceremony and declined to comment about it. “They have done nothing but fight in court to

and women whose lives of which we have but a small glimpse and about whom we will never fully know or understand the true struggle or horrific lives they endured,” Dupre said. The ceremony included a candlelight walk in honor of the 95 individuals as well as the ringing of a bell 95 times – one in remembrance of each of them. “The community we love, and the freedoms we enjoy, have come at a cost. That cost was a harsh real-
ity that people were hurt, violated and put in bondage before they were buried on this site,” Dupre said. “Over the past two years, there has been controversy, heated conversations had, decisions made and then revisited. These things were a part of this journey, but so was learning, the engagement, the partnerships and the opportunity to shed light on the past.
