New Year means new beginnings for area businesses

Since we didn’t get a chance to put out a Business Journal publication for the month of January, this our first opportunity at the Fort Bend Business Journal to wish all of you a Happy New Year. And you know what that means, right?

You guessed it – even more businesses beginning to set down roots and make themselves at home in Fort Bend County as the calendar has flipped to 2023. It’s a tale as old as us, but we never tire of being able to introduce Fort Bend residents new and old to some new places to call home.

For some businesses, it’s new – period. Inside today, you’ll find a story about organic juice shop Clean Juice making its new home in Sugar Land for those who are looking for more health-conscious options around the area.

And for others, it’s simply new beginnings or expansions. Kelsey-Seybold opened up its newest Fort Bend County clinic at The Grid in Stafford, as

the multi-use development continues to attract a diverse array of businesses to help make Fort Bend a destination county. Elswhere, Bluebonnet Nutrition recently completed an expansion in Sugar Land that will expand its workforce and help bring even more jobs to county residents.

Also inside today’s publication is a popular barbecue shop in the northern part of the county finally being able to begin serving its much-beloved fare once again, as Brett’s BBQ shop has opened the doors on its new Katy/Fulshear location. It’s bigger, and in Texas, that usually means better when it comes to barbecue.

So you see, even though the calendar year has changed, our desire to bring you news of new places to call home – or remind you of some old favorites. So take a look inside today and see what’s new on the ever-burgeoning business scene in Fort Bend County.

Brett’s BBQ Brett’s BBQ opens new Katy restaurant

Atlong last, the wait is over for fans of one of the area’s most popular barbecue joints.

Earlier this month, Brett’s BBQ Shop opened its new restaurant at 25220 Kingsland Blvd. in the Katy/Fulshear area with a soft opening, according to a Facebook post from the restaurant.

Brett’s BBQ Shop outgrew its 600-square-foot digs on 606 S. Mason Road in Katy just three years after its opening, prompting its move to Katy’s Boardwalk Crossings that began last year.

Owner Brett Jackson started the oak-smoked, Central Texas style barbecue joint in October

2018, and Texas Monthly named the restaurant to its 2021 “50 Best BBQ Joints” list. The new 4,858-square foot facility gives Brett’s BBQ access to a full kitchen with a convection oven, fryers and flat top grills.

Brett’s BBQ restaurant served hundreds of customers during its initial soft opening weekend, according to the restaurant, and the soft opening will run through Jan. 22.

“We could not have dreamed of such an outpouring of

support and welcome to the City of Katy,” Jackson wrote on Facebook Jan. 8. “Thank you for your continued patience as we settle in to our new BBQ palace.”

The shop will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. or until food is sold out. For more information, visit the restaurant’s website at brettsbbqshop.square.site.

a car is a total loss only when the price of repairs exceeds a percentage of the vehicle’s value as determined by the insurance company. Today, most cars are built using unibody construction (frame and body as one). A reputable shop with highly skilled technicians and state-of-the-art equipment, can return your vehicle to its original factory specifications. The collision repair industry has come a long way with regard to structural repairs. Holy Rosary STANDING STRONG Rosenberg

When Holy Rosary Catholic Church was founded in Rosenberg in 1911 off of Avenue H, it was built with a desire to pour the love of Christ into the Rosenberg and Fort Bend County communities.

It has since moved its physical location to 1416 George St. where it has stood since 1954. Father Orrin Halepeska said its priorities have not changed. Our story is one of, “abundant sacrifice, devotion, generosity, and vision.”

“As a whole, it’s our responsibility to teach the whole community about God, teach everyone about how much He cares for us and loves us, and to teach people to serve and take care of others,” Fr. Halepeska said. “That’s our responsibility. So not only do we teach people who are part of our community, but we try to take care of everyone.”

First founded over 100 years ago, the church has a deep history in Rosenberg and in Fort Bend County. Fr. Halepeska is the 12th pastor assigned to shepherd the parish in Rosenberg, where he

took over beginning in 2018. And though his tenure is but a small part of the parish’s story, he said it is one he is nonetheless honored to be blessed to continue. “We are a family-oriented place. We are grounded in our Catholic faith. We’re very proud of that. We love our community and desire to serve Rosenberg for years to come.

Ongoing renovations have been taking place at the church for the last two years. From repairing the exterior envelope of the building, to replacing the floor and buying a new sound system, Fr. Halepeska said each task has been completed with one goal in mind – to create a place where the Rosenberg and greater Fort Bend communities can come to feel at home. It was a daunting project to take on, he said, “but he believes it was well worth it.”

“It’s the small things that make the church a beautiful place for people to be able to pray, where they can open up to God, and where they can feel safe that really makes a difference in people’s spiritual journeys. When you have a historic building that is so special to everyone, you want

in

to take it seriously and do a very good job. We took the time to do it properly so that building really will be here for another 100 years, and will preserve our faith in this local church of Rosenberg.”

The 27-acre campus is also home to Holy Rosary Catholic School, providing education for PreK through 8th grade, which serves a diverse student base of 150 students under the leadership of Principal Adrienne Rodriguez.

The school has graduated over 2,000 students since it opened in 1942 under the direction and vision of the Dominican Sisters. The growth of the school over the course of those nearly 82 years propelled the need for additional space and activities leading to the current campus which includes an elementary building, junior high building, cafeteria, gym and two playgrounds.

“It’s a very special community here, and alumni want to send their children and grandchildren to our school at Holy Rosary. “It’s a family atmosphere,” Principal Rodriguez said. “It’s an excellent academic school, but our number one priority is to be grounded in our faith. We’re educating their mind, heart, and spirit, and everybody here contributes to that.”

And while academics are important, Principal Rodriguez points out the most important part of coming to work for her and the school’s 22 fulltime staff members goes so much deeper. “As an educator for almost two decades”, she said,

13 The Fort Bend Business Journal H February 2023
Photos provided by Holy Rosary Catholic Church

“serving others has always been a personal philosophy. When that personal philosophy of service is rooted in one’s faith, it takes on a much deeper meaning”, she explained.

“Having that long-standing faith-based resource in the Rosenberg and Fort Bend County communities”, she said, is a blessing, ”and everything the school and church offers for education, she said, has been eye-opening in her first year working in a Catholic school.

“It has been such a special opportunity to be able to approach teaching and learning grounded in our Catholic faith. We come to work to help our children get to the kingdom of Heaven,” she said. “For us to be able to say that we are doing that before we say we’ll teach them math, science, and more is something

that cannot compare.”

Above all, Fr. Halepeska and Principal Rodriguez said that Holy Rosary is a place where anyone from any walk of life can come to feel at home. The church has been ministering and proudly serving for decades and desires to continue that legacy.

The parish also offers daily mass, as well as spiritual growth programs such as bible study and small faith communities. Youth ministry and faith formation programs serve the children of our community that may not attend our school, and grief ministry and compassion ministries serve those in time of loss. Community building organizations within the parish also support those in need

around our community.

“We hope that Holy Rosary is a place where people can come for the truth, where they can come to learn about God and how to be a good human person,” Fr. Halepeska said.

“We want to be a part of Rosenberg and the greater Fort Bend County area because we’re proud to live here, and we love being here. We want people to feel as if they can come to our Parish Church and School to find Love, Hope, and Relationship with God.”

opening soon in Katy’s La Centerra Crack

Anew chicken restaurant will be coming to popular retail and shopping center in the northern part of the county early this year.

On Dec. 19, California-based The Crack Shack announced that it will be opening its first Houston-area location at the La Centerra shopping center in Katy at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd. this coming Spring.

The restaurant will feature its signature bone-in fried chicken, according to a news release, along with fried chicken sandwiches such as the Coop Deville and Firebird, and fresh and hearty bowls.

Patrons will also have their choice from the restaurant’s sauce on tap bar, according to the release, featuring house-made condiments like ranch, Sriracha 1000 Island, pineapple mustard and Sweet Baby G’s BBQ.

“We’re incredibly excited to share our passion for highquality food that’s accessible to everyone and

unmatched hospitality with the Katy community,” Director of Operations Dan Peña said. “Entering this new market allows us to form new local partnerships that foster the community — from relationships with local bakers, farmers and purveyors to support for schools and other organizations important to the neighborhood. That is a crucial component of our commitment as a brand as we expand, and Katy is no exception.”

Could you cope with long-term care costs? FOCUS

We all want to stay healthy and live independently throughout our retirement years. Unfortunately, that won’t be possible for some of us, so it’s a good idea to be prepared for health-related challenges — such as the need for long-term care.

As you may know, long-term care covers a variety of services, ranging from occasional visits from a home health aide to full-time residency in a nursing home. But while these types of care may vary in duration and intensity, they all have one thing in common — they’re expensive. Genworth, an insurance company, reports these median annual costs:

• Over $100,000 for a private room in a nursing home

• Over $60,000 for the services of a home health aide

Furthermore, Medicare typically pays very few of these expenses, which means the burden of payment will likely fall on you — or, even worse, on your adult children if you can’t afford the care you need.

Of course, you could hope that you will avoid these costs simply by not requiring any type of assistance — but the odds aren’t necessarily in your favor. In fact, someone turning 65 today has an almost 70% chance of needing some type of long-term care services in their remaining years, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

So, how can you protect yourself from the potentially enormous costs of long-term care? You could decide that you’ll pay out of pocket — if so, you’ll need to incorporate into your retirement budget a reasonable estimate of potential long-term care costs, and you may need to make some significant changes to your saving and investment

plans. And the earlier you begin, the better.

Your other option is to purchase some form of long-term care insurance. Essentially, three types of coverage are available:

• Traditional long-term care insurance

– A traditional long-term care policy covers long-term care expenses in your home or at a nursing facility. But policies will differ in terms of what services are covered and how benefits are paid. And you may also be able to choose whether you want inflation protection. Also, with some policies, you can deduct the premiums from your state and federal taxes. (Your tax advisor can evaluate a policy you’re considering for potential tax benefits.)

– In addition to providing coverage for home health care or a nursing home stay, a hybrid long-term care policy also offers a death benefit, so if you never need long-term care, your family could benefit from the policy’s proceeds.

care rider – You can find a life insurance

policy that lets you add long-term care coverage through a “rider,” or optional add-on. With this type of policy, you can use some of the death benefit to pay for your long-term care needs.

Which policy is best for you? There’s no one right answer for everyone. A financial professional can help you evaluate all your options within the context of your overall investment and protection strategies. But keep in mind that all long-term care policies tend to get more expensive as you get older, so if you’re considering this type of coverage, you may want to get started sooner rather than later.
