The Work of the Redeemer "I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. "And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” (John. 14:4-5) Last week we looked briefly at the biblical truths pertaining to the identity of Jesus. We learned that He is both man and God at the same time. Central to the message of "Why Jesus?" is the declaration that He was sent into the world by the Father. His mission was not given to Him at His baptism or in the manger. He had it before His arrival in the flesh. As a young boy in the temple, He reminded His earthly parents that He must be about His Father’s business. His meat and drink was to do the will of His Father. It was zeal for His Father’s house that consumed Him. Repeatedly, He declared that He spoke not on His own authority but on the authority of the One who sent Him. Now that we have a richer understanding for who He is, let us examine what He did on the cross? Listen to Jesus as He prays to the Father at the end of His ministry: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You… And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was” (John 17:1–5 NKJV). The work of redemption was a transaction that involved both obligation and reward. The Son entered into a sacred agreement with the Father. He submitted Himself to the obligations of that covenantal agreement. Paul expounded on this work when he wrote, “You, who were dead in your trespasses … God made alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us” (Col. 2:13-14). This text means we all co-signed an IOU that none of us has paid this debt (Rom. 1:1–3:20). This payment was owed to God, not the Devil. It is a ransom paid to God the Father. There is no negotiation between the Devil and the Lord for the release of the captives. Rather, we are redeemed by having Christ crush the head of the serpent after He pays the ransom to God (Genesis 3:15). Having failed to obey God perfectly, all of us must pay for our evil through suffering eternal death — the wrath of God — but the Father has shown incomparable love in allowing another to pay the debt for His people. Taking the debt — the IOU that shows what we have not done and the divine wrath that must fall on us — God nailed it on the cross of Christ, showing that His death satisfied our debt. Faithful over a few, Bro. Leslie B. James
