THE GOD OF A DOUBLE PORTION “Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion; they shall have everlasting joy (Isaiah 61:7)." In the south, we have an expression, "food so good, make you wanna smack yo mamma." Everyone may not be familiar with that expression but the sentiment is well understood. I grew up in a home where my mother's cooking was so good that I always asked for seconds. As I reflect on the last seven years, every meal my wife made was devoured in portions of seconds and even thirds. What's my point? When something is good, you just can't help but ask for more. As children of God, it is very evident that we are blessed. We serve an omni-benevolent God who gives us seconds, even before we ask for more. Six times in the Bible, specific references are made to a “double portion.” When someone receives a double portion, he gets a gift twice as much as that given to others. The concept of the double portion is first mentioned in the Law of Moses: “But he shall acknowledge the firstborn . . . by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the firstfruits of his strength. The right of the firstborn is his” (Deuteronomy 21:17). A firstborn son was entitled to receive twice the inheritance of that of a father’s other sons, in addition to the right of succession. Near the end of Elijah’s time on earth, he offered his assistant Elisha a gift: “What can I do for you before I am taken from you?” Elisha answered, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me” (2 Kings 2:9). Elisha’s request was to be considered the successor of Elijah and to be “doubly blessed” with power in the prophetic office. This is the way God treats us. Over and over again, the Bible portrays God as gracious and generous, blessing us not according to what we have “earned” but according to our needs — and often beyond our needs. He has already blessed us with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus (Eph. 1:3), and He promises to supply every temporal need, again in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19). Today, as we assemble, we honor the God of a double portion. We celebrate the freedom to worship Him without legal restrictions or threat of persecution. Secondly, we honor the mothers who have loved us and influenced our lives to be better than we could ever imagine. “Count your blessings, name them one by one," as the old hymn exhorts us—with valid Biblical support. We are to be thankful people, expressing gratitude to our God for His blessings, however small or big they may be. Not mechanically, but devotionally, thank God for the double portions that we all tend to take for granted. Faithful over a few, Bro. Leslie B. James
