The New Normal

...but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ (Eph. 4:15) In the movie Liar, Liar, Jim Carrey plays an unscrupulous attorney who suddenly finds himself compelled to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. He spends the rest of the movie being slapped, beaten, and humiliated by friend and foe alike. Just for being honest? Was it wrong for him to be honest? No, but it was wrong for him to be honest only. His honesty needed to be tempered by another virtue. As Paul expresses it in Ephesians 4:15, we need to speak the truth in love. If we are to grow up in Christ, it is done in the context of our conversations. Honesty is an excellent virtue, but honesty alone can be brutal. Maybe that's why the Bible often commands virtues in pairs. "For this very reason," Peter writes, "giving all diligence, add to your faith; virtue, to virtue; knowledge, to knowledge; self-control, to self-control; perseverance, to perseverance; godliness, to godliness; brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness; love." (2 Peter 1:5-7). The pursuit of moral virtue should be balanced by the intellectual pursuit of knowledge, and increasing knowledge needs to be tempered by self-control, and so on. One virtue is necessary to moderate and enhance another. Once planted in the life of another, your words will bring forth flowers or weeds, health or disease, healing or poison. You carry a great responsibility for their use. As Proverbs 18:21 warns: ‘Death and life are in the power of the tongue.’ Your words have the power to contaminate a positive self-image or to heal the spreading malignancy of a negative one. Maybe you are aware of this tendency in your life—which has been confirmed by others—to come across as bossy, preachy, overbearing, and judgmental. You are passionate and full of conviction, and desire to speak truth. How do you do it in a way that is not harsh and without sounding insensitive? The apostle Paul commands two things about our words; First he makes a command about the content of our speech—it must be truthful. Second, he makes a command about the method of our speech—it must be loving. Our speech is to be full of gracious candor. . Faithful over a few, Bro. Leslie B. James
