COMPASSION FOR THE OUTSIDERS “And the Lord said, ‘Do you do well to be angry?" (Jonah 4:4).

Anyone who has ever attended a Sunday school class knows that Jonah was the man who was eaten alive by a fish and then vomited out three days later. But that’s about the extent of most people’s understanding of this Old Testament prophet and the book that bears his name. And that’s too bad, because Jonah is a Bible character worth knowing, and the book he wrote is not only rich in theological content, but is extremely relevant to the subject of compassion. Jonah was a Jewish prophet who was called to minister to Gentiles outside the boundaries of Israel. God sent him to preach a message of repentance to the citizens of Nineveh — a people belonging to the Assyrian Empire and noted for their extreme wickedness. Jonah eagerly desired God's wrath upon these evil Gentiles that he was actually angry at Him for wanting to bestow mercy upon them (4:1–2)! As today’s passage indicates, such an attitude is not new among God’s people. Jonah 4:2 reveals that the prophet did not obey the command to warn Nineveh because he feared that they might repent, and move God to show compassion. Jonah foolishly believed divine compassion was the exclusive right of Israel and he did not want to see the heathen of the nations converted. Today, we are likewise foolish when we allow the church to become a country club that, in word or deed, rejects sinners seeking redemption. As displayed by Jonah, any anger we feel when God is merciful to repentant men or any action we perform that prevents the spread of the Gospel is not only foolish, it is also evil. The Hebrew word for Jonah’s displeasure in 4:1 is the same one used for Nineveh’s evil in 1:2. God wants us to see that we are sinning when we are upset by His great compassion toward the most heinous transgressors. When God asked Jonah if it is right for him to be angry for His compassion on Nineveh (4:4), the expected answer was "no." Jonah sinned in pitying a plant more than he did men in bondage to wickedness (vv. 9–11). What are you doing to extend the Gospel to those on the margins of society? We should never become so callous to those outside the church that we cease to preach the Gospel to them with compassion. Faithful Over a Few, Bro. Leslie B. James
