COPDOCK MOTORCYCLE th CLUB FUN RUN 13 MAY Did you like Felix’s photos of the Copdock charity bike run in last month’s magazine? Well here’s the inside story of how it came about. As well being a member of SAM, I’m also on the committee of the Copdock Classic Motorcycle Club, which organises the annual bike show at Trinity Park (aka the Suffolk Showground) – this year is our 21st show, it’s on Sunday 30 September, and we’ve got some great attractions lined up - so put it in your diaries now! Why do we do it? Well we all like riding bikes and raising money for local good causes, which make a great combination. We also used to organise a couple of charity fun runs every year, but we hadn’t organised any charity fun runs for a couple of years because of concerns about the organisers’ legal liability if anybody had any accidents (there have been some unfortunate cases reported in the press, so this was not just ‘elf and safety’ gone mad), but this year we managed to increase our public liability insurance to £2 million, and decided to put on a run in May.
You might think a charity fun run would be a fairly simple event to organise, but you’d be wrong. We found a venue to finish at (Stonham Barns), worked out an interesting route, selected a charity to give the proceeds to, and thought we were nearly there – but no such luck! We always start our runs at Washbrook Service Station, with the bikes lined up the hill. No problem, said the police, so long as that side of the road is closed. Kevin Stark and his colleagues kindly told us who to liaise with at Suffolk County Council to apply for a road closure, so we set up a meeting. No problem, said the Council folks, The SAM Observer July 2012
