A CRACKUP AT THE RACE RIOTS Inspired by Harmony Korine’s experimental novel, the groundbreaking A Crackup at the Race Riots is solely comprised of clips from previously made YouTube videos. Relying on an innovative method of collage, the film presents a scathing condemnation of the modern American dream, eschewing plot, linear narrative, character development and scene setting in favour of halfremembered scenarios, jokes and ruminations. Capturing the fragmented moments of American life — observed through the demented lens of social media, TV, and pop culture obsession — A Crackup at the Race Riots not only retains but also develops the novel’s hypnotic sense of anarchy, impending chaos and weird wonder. Weaved together by the
Belgian collective Leo Gabin (the nom de guerre deployed by a triumvirate of youngish Belgian-based multi-media artists: Lieven Deconinck, Gaëtan Begerem and Robin De Vooght) that previously contributed to Korine’s Spring Breakers, it’s tailor-made for the YouTube generation. At once a renegotiation of the function of cinema and role of narrative, the film is a remarkable, essential work, showing only on the big screen at SUFF!
