What is Networking? Someone asked me recently “what is networking?” I had to think for a moment – what is it actually and what is it to members of National Women’s Network particularly I found this definition - Developing and using contacts made iin n business for purposes
beyond the reason for the initial contact. The ability to network is a crucial way for individuals with business ambitions to meet the clients, customers and contacts necessary to grow their business. Many people go to networking events, but very few know how to network effectively. Networking is more than just getting out and meeting people. Networking is a structured plan to get to know people who will do business with you or introduce you to those who will. But at NWN we like to take this one step further beyond the initial contact by regular interaction between members offering and giving support. Networking is not about how many business cards you can collect, it is about relationships and this is particularly true when women network. They want to get to know people and build relationships. As working women our contacts can purely be through either our place of employment or our business and this becomes very inward looking. By networking with people outside your work environment you can learn from their experiences, get support when required and make contacts that might grow your business. But you need to put work into networking. You can’t assume that just going to a network meeting means that people will want your service or product. You need to put work in to gain the trust to do business together. Get involved with the group and that way people get to know you and know what you do. Try different groups to see what suits you. At NWN we welcome non-members to our network and aim to support each other in our business ambitions by getting to know, like and trust each other.
