Welcome to this August/September Trinity Spotlight. I hope that you enjoyed the summer break and managed to find some sun along the way. There hasn't been very much around in Scotland the last few weeks, so sadly my egg chair has not seen much use at all this summer. By the time this issue drops through your door, the schools will have returned and for those of you who have kids life will have resumed some normality - whatever that might be. For some that might mean you actually have a bit of 'me' time again.
I think Covid made me realise how important that time for yourself actually is. During those weeks with restrictions on what we could do I became aware how hectic my life was. I actually came to enjoy the fact that I didn't have to be somewhere at a certain time and didn't have to keep juggling the different aspects of life. Post Covid I have tried to not let life get so busy and I definitely have a different aspect on making sure I have time to do the things I enjoy. I started going to yoga a couple of years ago and absolutely love the time on my mat. It is in my diary twice a week and is very rarely cancelled. Its the best 'me' time ever.
Whether it be Yoga, making time to catch up with friends or family, going for a walk on a nice day or simply spending a couple of hours reading a book, that time to relax and unwind is important for us all. If you are looking for something different to do to give yourself some time out, there are a few activites and groups on our pages this issue that might give you a few ideas. Have a browse at what's on offer.
For me, as this issue drops through your door I will be heading away on a weeks yoga retreat in the peaceful and beautiful setting of the hills north of Malaga. Perfect me time! Until the next issue ....

An Update From Councillor Sanne Dijkstra-Downie
Cllr Sanne Dijkstra-Downie | Lib Dem Councillor for Forth Ward
Follow facebook.com/SanneLibDem for news and updates
I wanted to start off with a big thank you to everyone who voted for Mike Andersen and the Liberal Democrats at the General Election in July. Your support, especially at a time of such significant political change, meant a lot. I would also like to offer my sincere congratulations to our new MP, Tracy Gilbert, and I hope that despite our being in different parties, we will have an opportunity to work together for the benefit of the area and the residents we both serve.
As I write this article, negotiations are still underway between COSLA, trade unions and the Scottish Government to avert the bins strikes currently planned in councils around Scotland from 14 until 22 August. I truly hope that these negotiations are successful, so that we can avoid a repeat of 2022. If strikes do go ahead, then by the time you read this a recovery operation will be getting underway to get bin collections back on track as soon as possible, and I will be working with Council officers to try and get urgent cases prioritised.
In recent weeks we have seen road closures caused by collapsed sewers on Trinity Road and Granton Road. Both are likely to be somewhat complex repairs that may take Scottish Water some time to resolve. I also appreciate that the bus diversion through Trinity is causing some disruption to parking – thank you for your patience if this affects you. On a more positive note, we have seen some recent surface treatments on local streets, including Clark Road, Clark Avenue and Zetland Place. I am still asking for repairs on other roads in the area such as (but not just) Trinity Road and South Trinity Road.
Many of you responded to the consultation on the future of the Victoria Park bowling greens and clubhouse – thank you! There is clearly a desire for a positive future for this space, though the Council does not currently have funding allocated to this project. I have been in favour of publicly accessible toilets in the park for many years, and I am pushing for this to be provided as part of any developments on this site. Lib Dems are also asking for Right to Grow funding to be allocated here so that more local families can experience the joy of growing their own food in a community growing space. I will keep you updated!
It’s also been great to see the proactive maintenance of the old railway paths (or North Edinburgh Path Network) by the expanded Council team this summer, including the cutting back of overhanging shrubs and cutting of verges. These paths are a huge asset to our area, as an important greenspace (a linear park!) and walking and cycle route. This is why the Lib Dem group are opposed to the potential new tram route onto the Roseburn/Telford path – the section which connects our local paths to Roseburn and the city centre. We will continue to advocate for an alternative solution that provides low-carbon, high-capacity transport to the Granton Waterfront without destroying this important nature space.
Finally, it was lovely to see so many of you at the Picnic in Victoria Park in June, and I hope to see many of you again at the Trinity Community Gala (Lomond Park, 25 August) – I may bring my face painting brushes!
As always, please do get in touch about local issues and I’ll do my best to help.

The Knitted Christmas Tree
The Knitted Christmas Tree is 4 months from opening day on the 30th November and is right on schedule. We are receiving green squares every week from all over the country. Thank you for every single one and for all of the beautiful decorations which will decorate the tree. We are having a series of leaf sewing parties at the Heart on Friday afternoons from 2-4 and the latest dates are 16th and 30th August then continuing into September at a slightly earlier time. Everyone is welcome and there is coffee, tea and cake of course!!
Derek and the men of Men’s Shed are busy constructing the trunk which is under wraps but I am told is a masterpiece of engineering.
On 30th November we are planning a craft market and anyone who would like a table to sell their own goods please get in touch. Heart of Newhaven will have their own table selling Christmas gifts. We know that there are lots more squares out there and we are starting to fireproof them so please bring them to the Heart or contact us and we can arrange to collect them.
Our fundraising is to make the Heart more accessible for everyone who visits our Victorian building. Home-Start is our charity partner who will also benefit from your generosity.
Our knit and natter sessions are Tuesday 7-8.30, Wednesday 10-12 and Saturday 10-12. For further information contact Norma : norma.johnston@heartofnewhaven.co.uk
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM WORKING WITH ME?
Experience the potent blend of Hypno-Healing & Hypno-Coaching. Heal your emotional wounds, change your thoughts, and re-wire your attitude to the past
Welcome to my world of ‘Hypno-Healing’ …
Many of us appear to be living fulfilled lives, and yet we’re often masking something that doesn’t make itself apparent to us 24/7, but it’s there all the same. Sometimes we’re aware of its source but can’t seem to escape from its negative power. Sometimes we don’t know the source – it can seem to have no obvious root cause and it defies rationality - but it’s there all the same and it’s unsettling or troubling.
I’m highly skilled in assisting a client to shift the emotional barriers and beliefs that have been distressing, uncomfortable and obstructive, and replacing them with a sense of renewal, revitalisation and enhanced wellbeing.
What sets me apart is that I go beyond hypnosis, I employ unique, bespoke methods that enable me to connect deeply with a client’s subconscious. This connection allows me to provide counsel, guidance, wisdom and knowledge. In our sessions I engage with the client’s whole being – mental, physical, emotional, psychological, physiological, biological, neurochemical, historically in this life, genetically and energetically.
My approach transcends the client’s physical body & mind, extending into their energetic field and addressing their whole being. My purpose is not only to tackle the client’s challenges but also to restore balance and harmony within their entire vibrational energy system
Hypno-Coaching – ‘The words you think or speak become the house you live in’. Allow me to help you to make break-through changes in your life by bringing awareness to the thoughts & beliefs you’re having that are creating your self-talk. Can Robbie right the wrongs in their past? Can he get to the bottom of what drove Jenn away eight months ago? Most importantly, can he change their present in order to save their future?

Jenny Colgan says it's, 'Unputdownable, utterly romantic and gorgeous; I loved it.
Spotlight On Wine by Diana Thompson
Spotlight on D.O. Rueda
D.O. Rueda, just two hours northwest of Madrid is somewhat of a hidden gem which is surprising given how attractive the wines are. Producing white wines, predominantly from the Verdejo grape, they have plenty of character and are great with almost any food. Expect ripe stone fruit characters, balanced by refreshing acidity, a touch of fennel and a hallmark bitter finish which makes them dangerously moreish too. Here are some to look out for;
Beronia Verdejo, Rueda – Waitrose, Majestic from £9.99
Intensely aromatic with tropical fruit lifted by zesty citrus and a hint of fennel. Welcomely mouth filling with a length which goes on forever.
Diez Siglos Organic Sauvignon Blanc 2023 – Great Grog £10.49
Sauvignon Blanc plays an important part in D.O. Rueda; offering more floral and passionfruit characters than in other wine regions. This is certainly no exception.
Diez Siglos Verdejo 2023 – Great Grog £10.49
Partnering the Sauvignon Blanc, this wine offers generous juicy nectarine fruit together with a hint of tangerine oil and attractive texture. Well worth trying them both!
Bodegas Naia K Naia 2022 – WoodWinters £12
A blend of both Verdejo with a dash of Sauvignon Blanc from a bit of a rock star producer. Verdejo offers generous elegant peach stone fruit whilst Sauvignon Blanc brings racy acidity and freshness.

A Harvest Hula-Hoopathon
By Tracy Griffen
The Olympics are certainly inspiring times. However, you don’t need to be a world-class athlete to make a difference. On Sunday 8th September Leith Community Croft will be running a Harvest special Hula-Hoopathon to have fun with fitness whilst raising funds for the croft.
There will be a hooping relay - participants will work as a team to keep a hoop in the air for as long as possible. This requires not only individual skill but also coordination and teamwork, mirroring the collaborative spirit of Olympic relay races. In addition, individuals can showcase their own hoop skills, from who can hoop for the longest, to the most impressive tricks. I’m excited to have been asked to judge the competition – it seems like a long time ago I help run World Hoop day in Edinburgh in 2005 (yes, World Hoop day is a ‘thing’!), so I better polish up my own hooping skills.
Performances will be judged based on endurance, creativity, technique, and enthusiasm. Much like the athletes who competed in Paris 2024, participants in the Hula Hoopathon will showcase their agility, perseverance, and teamwork.
Hooping is an excellent abdominals workout, as you need to pull in your tummy and push through the spine to keep the hoop aloft. On the day there will be plenty of helpers, if you’ve ever wanted to try hooping but were too afraid to ask! Also adults need larger hoops than children, so come join us and learn an ‘essential’ life skill.
This event is not just about competition; it’s about bringing people together, fostering a sense of community, and encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle, surrounded by nature. If you’ve never visited the croft on Leith Links, this is the perfect day for you. Earth in Common is the charity that helps people learn how to grow their own food, passing on valuable skills and boosting individuals’ confidence in a green supportive environment.
You don’t need to be a hooper either, as the café will be open all day, with freshly picked produce available from the plot. The event runs from 11am to 3pm on Sunday 8th September at Leith Community Croft. You can just turn up on the day, or find out more information from https://www.earth-incommon.org/
Personal Trainer Tracy Griffen runs a wee fitness studio on Balfour Street, and teaches hooping to interested clients. See adjacent advert for more info.
Edinburgh Floral Art Club
Edinburgh Floral Art Club resumes its activities in the large hall at St Columba's Church on Friday 13 September. We look forward to welcoming visitors and prospective new members at any of our meetings, we are a friendly group with a shared love of, and interest in, flower arranging. Meeting eight times a year our Session runs from September to May (inclusive) with a break in January. We gather on the second Friday of the month ready for our demonstrator (or activity) to start at 2pm and conclude with refreshments and a chance to chat, usually heading home around 4pm. The flower arrangements produced by our demonstrators are raffled off and lucky winners can be spotted carrying home beautiful flowers after each event.
In December and February of this Session we aim to have 'hands on' activities where members and guests can create their own floral art. Each month have a 'bring and buy' stall selling floral sundries, books on flower arranging and other flower-related items donated by members as well having other fundraising activities most months (eg quizzes, bottle stall etc). If you love flowers and enjoy watching floral artistry at its best and if you wish a relaxing and inspiring start to the weekend then do come and see what we are up to! More information from our Chairman, Mrs Suzie Stark, 07888 942561.
