Search for a lost love and another legend of Tinuy-an Falls

Unless we run to God in our suffering, inevitably we will become bitter and in despair. But if we choose to trust God to bring about something good out of this trial, we will discover that trials are not traps to bring us down, but opportunities to lead us up. Pain forces us to mature and hunger for something better. It pressures us to change, so that ultimately we can gain the victory, which can only be won through suffering. Don’t be impatient when you are in the midst of trials. Face it with calmness. Remember, everything in life passes, including your distress.

Alright, you’ve probably never been to Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig City in Surigao del Sur, indisputably (to a lot of people) the most awesome and widest waterfalls in Mindanao, if not the whole country, being baptized as the Niagara Falls of the Philippines. As traveler Eladio Centino has said, “You put three famous waterfalls in the country side by side but Tinuy-an still’s more fascinating and outlength them.” Called the “White Wall,” Tinuyan glimmers amidst the thick green forest but it is best to visit it in the rainy season (July to December) when the water is thick and heavy, the sight doubly enormous. For the curious minds, they may be asking how Tinuy-an got its name. Leave it to the storytellers who from past generations have told a few versions. And regardless of whether or not they are politically

and the legislative than in Moreno’s watch. The sour relationship of the incumbent executive and the legislature has become scandalous at the expense of the constituents. I believed it was unfair to either accused Moreno or the City Council of being derelicts in the performance of their functions. However, in an atmosphere of excellent housekeeping, the conflict between the city executive and the legislature could be minimized, if not, eliminated. Nonetheless, judging the status of the city executive and the legislative department today, the concept of culpability always lies in the hands of the city executive. We are discussing about leadership and command responsibility here. If the LP would junk Moreno, if would only mean that Moreno’s leadership is a failure. -0- Send comments/ reaction: crisguardian@ yahoo.com

to see our own faults and weaknesses, let alone be strong enough to admit we have them. But until we take the responsibility for the problems and unhappiness which we cause in our marriage, very little will change. So why not be honest with yourself? Just ask Jesus Christ to forgive you today for your wrong attitudes and the way you treat your wife or husband? Then ask Him to give you the strength and willpower to start changing each and every day. Just Think a Minute…

Gato Island as a shark and ray sanctuary, prohibiting the catching and trading of all shark and ray species within these waters. Rare species, such as thresher sharks, whitetip sharks, manta rays, and devil rays, can be found in these areas. “Our landmark decision to create the country’s first shark and ray sanctuary will ensure the protection and conservation of sharks

and rays which are threatened to extinction due to overfishing and the general lack of awareness on the importance of these highly endangered species,” said Corro. “Hosting the shark and ray sanctuary is also one of the best ways in which our local community can give back to these creatures for bringing-in tourism revenues which boosts their livelihood.” The new EO was welcomed by environmentalists, marine conservationists, tourism executives, and local government agencies that gathered at the Cebu Provincial Capitol for a three-day forum on strengthening and implementing the province’s shark and ray ordinance. “For a country blessed with unique marine biodiversity, it is high time that we establish a shark and ray sanctuary. We are pleased that Cebu is continuing its great work on shark and ray conservation by establishing sanctuaries that ensure the sustainability of these critical species,” said Vince Cinches, Oceans Campaigner for Greenpeace Philippines. “We urge our national lawmakers to take the cue from Cebu and make similar moves to turn the rest of our national waters into a haven for all shark and ray species.” Studies conducted by the Thresher Shark Research and Conservation Project estimates that approximately 80% of the municipal economy of Daanbantayan is fueled by scuba diving, providing employment and supporting livelihoods of local communities and its neighboring municipalities. Atty. Chad Estella, head of Cebu’s Anti-Illegal Fishing Task Force, added that the declaration of the shark and ray sanctuary demonstrates how the provincial ordinance is also good for local communities. “One of the action points we’ve come up is to launch Oplan Palwis to further strengthen Cebu’s existing ordinance that protects sharks and rays, incorporating science

correct or supernaturally unbelievable, they make for interesting and colorful ancient stories. The first story is anchored on romance with a tragic twist. It began when a young tribal lady who lived in a tribal village near the mountain forest vanished one day. “She could have eloped with someone,” somebody suspected. Her lover, a bagani (warrior), tried to look for her. After days of fruitless search he became sad and depressed. But another question came to everyone’s mind. Was she really a human being? Could it be that she was an encantada (spirit) who made the good-looking warrior fall in love with her? As the bagani waited and waited, he showed signs of intense emotional anguish. His peers observed he now talked to himself in a queer manner and hid in the thick forest.

and using the updated and revolutionary Philippine Fisheries Code. This is to ensure that the country’s first shark and ray sanctuary will be effective especially in reversing fish decline due to decades of overfishing,” said Estella.” Dennis Bryan Bait-it, the coordinator of Daanbantayan’s Bantay Dagat Migo sa Iho said, “Protecting sharks and rays is not only economically beneficial to local fisherfolk, but also to our marine ecosystems. Many shark species are indicators of a healthy marine ecosystem. This ensures fish are spawning and thriving so there would be more fish to catch by the local fishermen.” Anna Oposa, co-founder of Save Philippine Seas said, “The declaration of the shark and ray sanctuary sends a powerful message to the rest of the country and the world – that with political will, we can protect and restore the health of our seas.”

BFAR, region 10, said the geo-tagging of these structures will continue in the other LGU’s surrounding Panguil Bay, namely: Clarin, Misamis Occidental, Maigo, Kolambugan, Lala and Kapatagan, in Lanao del Norte and Aurora and Tambulig, in Zamboanga del Sur. Meanwhile, Atty. Philip T. Tan of Tangub said of the sanggabs in the city, 596 were removed voluntarily by their operators, while 327 were removed forcibly by the LGU. Tan said the highest number of 497 of these “sanggab” structures were located in Barangay Maquilao, followed by 312 in Migcanaway, 78 in Maloro, 20 in Mantic, 10 in Garang and nine in San Apolinario. Removal of “sanggab” structures from Panguil Bay was aimed at bringing back the marine wealth of the Bay, a known spawning area of shrimps and crabs, as agreed upon by the members of PBDC, during its 4th Full Council Meeting last February, in Lala, Lanao del Norte. One day they saw him head for the falls and disappear. They heard a scream, a loud thud and saw his dead body floating downstream. His face showed happiness. “It was his choice, his intention (tinuyuan) to offer his life in exchange of seeing the diwata again in her realm.” So the people concluded. Story number two This one reminds of actionfilled adventure movies in the mold of “Lord of the Rings”. A mountain tribe lived peacefully but its members were facing danger from strange men from a faraway, unknown tribe who were spying on them and eventually subdued and enslaved them. They fought back but suffered even more. The men were chained, their wives taken, their children sold. A baylan (priest) prayed to the spirits of the forest asking for help. One day, the falls glimmered like a

also closely monitoring the entry of fake rice. Earlier, he said the operatives from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has raided a warehouse but turned out to be negative. He did not elaborate. As this developed, Enciso suspects that fake rice was “locally-introduced” and “locally-produced” but still “we are monitoring all the imported products even the ingredients used in making the fake rice.” On one hand, Enciso said that the BOC-10 will auction on Thursday (July 9, 2015) at least 120 containers of smuggled rice.

Roxas said that the nationwide distribution of the patrol cars in the country motivated by the government’s commitment to alleviate the country’s police force. “Contrary to insinuations, there is nothing politics in the distribution of the patrol cars since every town in the country, regardless of political color would get one,” Roxas said. He said that each of the 23 towns in Misamis Oriental will have one “multiEXTRA-JUDICIAL SETTLEMENT OF THE ESTATE OF THE DECEASED WENDELL B. jewel and caught the attention of the invaders. The baylan believed it was a way of the spirits of luring the invaders. The invaders ordered the native warriors to take them to the falls. As they obliged, they silently believed it was a divine act by the spirits in their favor. The invaders thought the falls flowed directly into the sea and took a raft with the native men at the helm. The invaders were loud and noisy and did not notice the native men jumping off as the raft plunged into the boulders, sending the aggressors to their death. The villagers showed no mercy to the attackers as it was their choice or intention (tinuyuan) to test the spirits of the forest. After winning back their freedom the tribe offered a ritual of thanks. purpose” patrol jeeps that could also be utilized in times of emergencies and disasters. On Friday morning, Roxas turned over seven patrol cars in the island province of Dinagat in the Northeastern Mindanao region. He said the DILG will distribute 14 more patrol jeeps to Lanao Del Norte Saturday morning and another five patrol jeeps in the island province of Camiguin later in the afternoon. The distribution of the patrol jeeps in North and Northeastern Mindanao region is part of the 1,490 patrol jeeps for distribution to each of the 1,490 towns in the country, Roxas said.

informal work and a reduction in the number of full-time work indicates a deterioration in the overall quality of work, said the group. Informal work or jobs worked less than 40 hours a week are commonly low-paying, unstable and lacking in benefits accorded to regular workers. IBON added that the number of unemployed is also likely underestimated. The reported decrease in the number of unemployed is partly because job-seekers have become discouraged after many years of poor and unchanging employment prospects. This may be the reason for the falling labor force participation rate to 64.6% in April 2015 from 65.2% in the same period the year before. Huge job losses in the key pro-

duction sectors of agriculture and manufacturing also belie claims to an improving economy, said IBON. The same NSO report showed that the agriculture sector shed a very large 396,000 employed. The manufacturing sector shed another 34,000, which job losses were off-set mainly by a 204,000 increase in wholesale and retail trade. This worsens the trend of the Philippines being a merely trading nation rather than, despite its rich natural resources and a large labor force, a producing economy, IBON said. All these indicate the growing distortion in the Philippine economy and in employment generation. The quality of work and, indeed, of pay, is markedly getting worse. This is because of long-standing neglect and continuing backwardness of Filipino agriculture and manufacturing, said the group.
