W
ith various sports offered every summer, it is difficult for parents to choose which one is the best for their children. It is important to consider their personalities and interests before deciding which among those is suited for them. I once had this dilemma a few years back. How did I consider mine? For the record, it was not their interest nor their personality. Rather, it was for their safety which made me and my husband decide to let our boys engage in Taekwondo. Bullying, as we all know, is rampant nowadays and it has been consistently reported to happen in school. Parents may be on guard but not at all times. It is wise, therefore, to consider a sport which our kids may learn how to defend themselves. Taekwondo is characterized by the extensive use of high standing and jumping kicks as well as punches. Not only does it upsurge physical fighting skills by teaching defensive techniques which require mastery and mental concentration, it also builds up confidence on the individual as a positive momentum is actualized. Its focus is not just exercise to increase one's endurance but also to impart discipline on the individual. Because of this, Taekwondo has gained worldwide
recognition and along with Judo, it is recognized and played in the Olympic games. The sport was first introduced in Cagayan de Oro in April of 1988 by Master Yang Jo Jeun, who established the Cagayan de Oro Taekwondo Main Gym. Since then, students of the sport have shown impressive skills. In fact, an alumnus of CDO Main Gym in the name of Ernesto Juan Mendoza III triumphed in the 2007 SEA Games held in Thailand and was a recipient of a Bronze medal. Student-athletes of CDO TKD Main Gym continue to shine by excelling in the Palarong Pambansa. In 2013, Kenneth Mark Porras and William Angelo Abucay both bagged Gold medals and Lonale Jorie Sumatra won a Bronze medal. All such distinction would be too elusive to attain without the valued expertise and constant encouragement of their instructors: Engr. Vincent Cecil Orcales, JB Toledo, Jason Pabericio and Bennie Toledo. The consistent teachings of discipline, which in a way, molded these athletes into becoming disciplined individuals not just in school and at home but also in places where they abidingly deal with people, I must say, I take a great deal of pride and as a parent, I am truly proud of the impact it made on my boys' lives.

PRISAA REGION-10 GEARS UP FOR THE 2014 NATIONAL GAMES In its bid to move up in the medal standings, the member schools of the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) of Region 10 are fielding more athletes in the latest edition of the annual PRISAA National Collegiate Games this coming April 6-12, 2014 in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. This year, a 274 strong contingent will comprise the delegation of athletes, coaches, staff, officials and school representatives. Heading the Region 10 delegation is PRISAA Regional President Dr. Mariano M. Lerin. Fueled by their passion and dedication towards excellence, PRISAA Region-10 continues to bring forward their mission of providing opportunities for young students to excel and become recognized not just in academics but in sports as well. Region 10 boasts of a growing membership in the PRISAA with
current members of 14 schools and universities and aims to become even bigger in the coming years. Schools include Liceo de Cagayan University, Misamis University, Pilgrim Christian College, Christ The King College –Gingoog, Gingoog City Colleges, Gingoog Christian College, St. Peter’s College – Iligan, Iligan Medical Center College, Fatima College – Camiguin, Mountain View College – Bukidnon, San Agustin Institute of Technology – Bukidnon, San Isidro College- Bukdinon, Misamis Oriental Institute of Science & Technology-Bukidnon and North Central Mindanao College. Aside from the sports events, cultural competitions such as vocal solo and vocal duet will also take place as well as the National Mutya ng PRISAA 2014. For two straight years, Region 10 bagged the Mutya ng PRISAA title represented by Ms. Amadea Lucia Piatti (2012) and Beatrice Pohl (2013).

society should exact accountability from the government, it should also share in the responsibility for social change. She embodies this collaboration in her own life and work. Even as she acknowledges her roots in the NGO sector, she is currently revolutionizing the DSWD as secretary, steering it towards more people-empowering and holistic development programs. She obtained her bachelor and master’s degrees in Social Work from the University of the PhilippinesDiliman, and a master’s degree in Public Administration at the Kennedy School of Government in Harvard University. As a young graduate of UP’s School of Social Work, she helped local farmers save native rice strains from extinction through a pioneering grassroots program of chemical-free cross-fertilization. Dinky is known for her stellar gift of facilitation and negotiation which has won her a very large following in all social strata on a nationwide scale. She has lent this gift to formal institutions like the United Nations and other global fora without concern for personal credit. At home, she is known to Muslim Mindanao, the Riverside communities of the Pasig River, the foothill
communities of Mt Banahaw and farmers all over the country. Dinky was the executive Vice-President of Community Organizers Multiversity and Executive Director of COTRAIN. In 1976, she was a pioneer, trainer and coordinator in developing a rural organizing program under the province’s Social Action Center in Bukidnon, Philippines. In 1987, she successfully campaigned for the passage of the Agrarian Reform Law, uniting for a time the entire Philippine agrarian community. Not surprisingly, Dinky has been a recipient of numerous awards and citations in the field of social work and community development, including the Ten Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service Award in 1992 and the Most Distinguished Alumnus Award given by the University of the Philippines, also in 1992. A committed social worker within and without the government walls, Dinky has managed to translate the language of the historically oppressed into working relations with the rest of Philippine society, under the belief that evolution, and not revolution, is the way to achieve sustainable change.

"Mahusay, Matapat, at Magiliw na Paglilingkod sa Sambayanan.” These are the guiding principles of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) led by Secretary Corazon “Dinky” JulianoSoliman. In the face of the grave challenges brought by 2013, especially in the aftermath of the most recent disasters that hit Mindanao such as Sendong, Pablo, and the MNLF siege of Zamboanga City, Dinky and her team stepped up and responded to what was most urgently needed at that time. Be Thankful Think a minute…During World War II, churches stayed open 24 hours a day so people could come to pray for their country and family members out on the battlefield. A caretaker in one of these churches noticed a boy who came to pray about 10 minutes every day. One day after several weeks, the boy came and stayed to pray even longer. The caretaker asked him why he was praying longer this time. The boy answered: “Each day I came to ask God to bring my father home safely. This morning my dad came home, so I hurried here to thank God.” Have you developed the habit of being thankful every day, no matter how things are going? Always remember, there are many people with worse problems than yours. My friend’s son, Joshua, was born with a serious heart disease. Joshua has had several heart surgeries. He’s not been able to play sports because of his heart condition. But Joshua’s grandmother always taught him to be thankful. On days when Joshua was so sick he could not go to school, his grandmother told him: “Josh, just be thankful that you’re home and not in the hospital.”
Recently Joshua had another heart surgery, but this time the strong medicine made him so sick he almost died. Joshua’s grandmother telephoned him in the hospital to very kindly and gently say: “Josh, I love you and I’m praying for you. Be thankful you’re not in a coma.” You know that grandmother is right? No matter how bad our problems are, they could always be much worse. When’s the last time you counted all the good things you have: whether it’s your family, friends, food to eat, clothes to wear, a roof over your head? Things that millions of people in the world do not have. Usually, it’s only after we’ve gone through problems that we learn some of our most important lessons in life. There’s a song that says: “If I’d never had a problem, I’d never know that He could solve them. I’d never know what faith in God could do.” So won’t you give your life to Jesus Christ today, and start trusting Him to take care of you no matter what happens? He’ll help you to see all the good things He’s given you—including answers to prayers you never even prayed. Just Think a Minute…

E
ffective early response to emergencies and disasters and their management relies on having a well established, tested, and scenario specific contingency plan. When Tropical storm Sendong wreak havoc on Cagayan De Oro in 2011, the city was not prepared for the unusual amounts of rainfall brought by the storm which caused massive flooding and landslides. During this catastrophe, 125,256 families or more than a million individuals were affected and an estimated cost of PhP1.85 billion worth of properties were damaged. In the aftermath of Sendong, there is no question that the contingency plan of the city needs to be revisited and updated to prepare its communities for the impacts of a changing climate. To address this need, the Climate Change Commission (CCC), through Project Climate Twin Phoenix, will
be conducting an orientation and workshop on Flood Contingency Planning for Cagayan de Oro City on 1-3 April in Dahilayan, Bukidnon. Project Climate Twin Phoenix is a project implemented by the CCC and with support and technical assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Australian Government, to put in place a long term capacity development programme for cities and municipalities by addressing disaster risks from climate change and other related natural hazards. “We encourage our local governments to undertake proactive and systematic measures in strengthening their preparedness capacity, in this case, by formulating their own contingency plans for specific scenarios such as flood”, says CCC Vice Chairperson, Secretary Mary Lucille Sering. The activity aims to introduce
the concept of contingency planning and familiarize Cagayan De Oro city’s key government officials with government policies on disaster risk reduction and management and climate change adaptation measures, flood hazard mapping and early warning systems, among others. During the orientation and workshop, the participants will also be organized into clusters and the details in the formulation of the flood contingency plan will be discussed. aTechnical experts and facilitators from Project Climate Twin Phoenix, along with representatives from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) and Office of Civil Defense Region 10, and experts on the field of disaster risk management and planning will conduct the three-day activity.

Northern Mindanao---Industry Tripartite Councils (ITCs) leaders and government partners pledged to work hand-in-hand in order to build better tripartism in the region. Highlighted with convergence of no less than twenty one (21) ITCs including local Tripartite Industrial Peace Councils (TIPCs) which was participated in by seventy (70) labor, management and government representatives with one common goal: “Achieving tripartism in the pursuit of industrial peace in Northern Mindanao”, the 1st ITCs Summit was successfully held last March 28, 2014 at the Apple Tree Resort and Hotel, Opol, Misamis Oriental. Worker’s and employer’s representatives joined in the integration of the different programs of the national partner agencies like
TESDA who talked about Apprenticeship as presented by OIC Regional Director Engr. Edgar A. Sales, DTIX’s OIC Regional Director, Linda O. Boniao discussed the relevance of the Northern Mindanao Priority Industry Clusters, DOLE X’s Sr. LEO, Arlyn Z. Bael talked about the Child Labor Situationer in the Region while Assistant Regional Director Crispin D. Dannug, Jr. discussed the Labor Laws Compliance System and RTWPB-X presented the Two-Tierd Workers Gain Sharing by Atty. Gretchen O. Lamayan. An update on the Single Entry Approach industry statistics was presented by Glenford C. Labial, LEO III of DOLE-X. The Summit agreed on the need for further collective efforts to pursue sustainable economic growth, economic stability and unity among stakeholders while ensuring social cohesion and quality employment.
During the one-day activity, the summit discussed past actions and more importantly future steps in the region’s aim to have a peaceful management-labor relationship and their key role in strengthening social partnership as well as their importance in elaborating and effectively implementing DOLE deliverables and services. “We work as one team, and together we will show excellent performance with our efforts in creating better and quality jobs in the Northern Mindanao region.” as said by Rodrigo A. Deloso, Director II of DOLE-X during his opening message. “I am as happy as my Regional Director, Atty. Alan M. Macaraya as I finally meet you today, our social partners before this ITC Summit because what we focus more is the ITC competitiveness as well as eradicating, if not minimizing labor disputes in the plant level”. Deloso added. The representatives
raised issues and concerns on productivity incentives, collective bargaining agreement and general labor standards. The Summit was participated by the following industries: Construction, Hotels, Resorts and Restaurants, Pineapple, Banana, Sugar (Bukidnon); Hotels and Resorts (Camiguin); Academe and Restaurants (Lanao del Norte), Coconut (Misamis Occidental), Bus and Hotels (Misamis Oriental EAST); Maritime, Business Process Outsourcing, Manpower and Hotels and Restaurants (Misamis Oriental WEST) along with the six (6) provincial level TIPCs. Voluntary Codes of Good Practices (VCGP) were previously inked with these industries and vice-chairmen for labor and management converged to represent their respective industry from the different provinces. DOLE-X assures to hold the activity annually.

CdO Condo property rakes in international awards

rimavera Residences, the first ecofriendly mixed-use condominium in Cagayan de Oro, has garnered several recognitions from international award-giving bodies for its commitment to green architecture and design. Recently it was named among the winners in the prestigious International Property Awards in the 2014 Asia Pacific regional competition. It was recognized in the Mixed-Use Development for the Philippines. The official announcement will be made at a high-profile gala and presentation dinner at the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on May 9. Prior to this achievement, Primavera Residences was also highly commended by the Southeast Asia Property Awards (SEAPA) for Best Condo Development in the Philippines in 2011. World Class education awaits Filipino Scholars
T
he New Zealand Embassy is once again inviting eligible students from the Philippines to apply for postgraduate development-related studies at a tertiary institution in New Zealand through the New Zealand ASEAN Scholarship program. The New Zealand ASEAN Scholars (NZAS) awards are open to qualified candidates from the public, private, and civil society sectors who want to pursue further studies in the fields of agriculture, tourism, governance, public sector, trade, development, disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, and renewable energy. An indicative allocation of 18 scholarships is made available
for Filipinos who desire to obtain a postgraduate degree in New Zealand commencing in 2015. Applicants will be selected on merit, including the development benefits of their proposed course of study. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate leadership qualities and potential for future leadership. Priority will also be given to applicants who have demonstrated high academic achievements especially in their undergraduate degree. The program aims to empower individuals with the knowledge, skills and qualifications to contribute to the economic, social, and political development of the ASEAN region. The scholarships are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme
