FROM THE EDITOR WELCOME TO THE PREMIER EDITION OF SUCCESS TRIBE MAGAZINE!

T

his magazine was born out my own thirsty journey to holistic life success after ten years of research and study in the areas of holistic health, wealth and mind/body development. Like most other success coaches, I’ve been through some left field “life experiences” and through those losses, I have gained an immense understanding of life through different eyes. Through great loss, comes great growth even though it may not seem that way at the time. With many years in a corporate real estate capacity, I have experienced sitting in the fast lane burning the candle at both ends. The damage to my body through unhealthy lifestyle habits took me seven years to rebuild, with much of that done through women’s competitive body shaping. Today I have left those corporate days behind me and I am so grateful for my lessons of the past. These lessons have delivered me the passion and hence the energy to drive this bi-monthly gift to you. There are transitional stages in our lives when we may lose our job, lose our partner, lose our worldly possessions, or lose our life as it had previously been. Initially this may leave a person with a sense of heartbreak, emptiness or lack of self-worth. It is within these challenges that we can observe a pivotal time for a call to change, or to transform our lives. I personally don’t see these transitions as being totally formidable, but instead act as a hint that we may not be on the path that we originally signed up for. It is in these

times that we really need to be seeking out freshly inspired direction that will create more balance and more happiness for us. I believe that we are all here for a specific purpose, but some of us have yet to discover what that is. Once you do the work in this area and start to align with your most authentic needs, wants and desires…wow…do new exciting doors start to open up miraculously. You can have the life of your dreams and start doing what you were born for…..and that is often something far greater than you previously imagined! It is my wish for you that Success Tribe magazine can assist you by providing a platform of information and education which supports you on your journey of self–discovery and holistic success. What is The Passion Test?

Many years ago I was working in a job I hated. My office was filled with recruiters making tens of thousands of dollars every month. Each time a placement was made for another disk drive engineer, the bell would ring. But it never rang for me.

I told my friend about my plan to follow this speaker around the country until she had no choice but to hire me. The only challenge was that I had no money, “But I know I’ll manage it somehow. I just know it,” I told my friend. The next day, I was sitting with my eyes closed in meditation at the local TM center when I felt small pieces of paper falling on my head. Interestingly enough, we don’t have to experience extreme events to have suffered from trauma. Anything that had caused emotional distress and that has made the brain encode that distress via the stress hormone pathways, can make us feel triggered in the present with emotion. THE DATE LIER Both men & women frequently lie at the beginning of dating, but they lie about different things.

A

reader of my articles wrote to me about the article I wrote entitled, “Why do People Lie?” He said that he would be “very interested in a similar article with examples about all the lying that women do....At least in the initial stages of dating, women lie sooooo much.” Well, being a woman, I’m not as aware of how much women lie on dates as I am of how much men lie on dates. So I decided to write about date lying in general. The man who wrote to me was upset about lies such as “I have to go,” or “I’m busy,” or “I’m on another call right now. I’ll call you back.” He states that, “I think that much of this is women’s very misguided attempt to ‘spare someone’s feelings.’ Reject them, without actually rejecting them.”

Women have been trained to not hurt men’s feelings. They have been taught that if the truth will hurt, then tell a “white lie.” And, when they do tell the truth, it is often in a harsh or critical way.

I’ve often counselled women, who don’t want to date a particular man, to say things like, “I don’t feel romantic toward you,” or “There doesn’t seem to be chemistry between us,” or “I’m not feeling a connection with you.” One of my clients told a man who called her for a first date, “Your energy does not feel respectful toward me. I’m not drawn to meet you because of this.” He was open to what she was saying and they ended up having a good conversation. He was appreciative of her truth, and she ended up going out with him. Since men are usually the ones doing the calling, they are not as often put in the position of saying no. My experience is that men

often lie too, but in different ways. For example, a client of mine, a psychotherapist, dated a man who told her he was in therapy. She was pleased to hear this, as personal growth is very important to her. She later discovered that he was in therapy because the court had mandated it due to him having punched his ex-wife in the stomach while she was pregnant. She found this out through the ex-wife. His avoidance of the truth was an attempt to impress her and control how she felt about him.

Women desperately want to be seen and understood. All I have to do is reflect back to the woman the things she wants to hear and I’ve got her. I can see her caring, her intelligence, her creativity, her joy of life, her beauty. I can see what she has to offer that has been squashed down. When I see these things in her, she falls in love with me.”

A man at one of my 5-day intensive workshops, who was married but was addicted to being with other women, revealed how easy it was for him to hook women in, even when they knew he was married. “Women desperately want to be seen and understood. All I have to do is reflect back to the woman the things she wants to hear and I’ve got her. I can see her caring, her intelligence, her creativity, her joy of life, her beauty. I can see what she has to offer that has been squashed down. When I see these things in her, she falls in love with me.” Some of the women in the intensive were drawn to him, even knowing that he was sucking them in! The lie was not what he was saying to them about themselves—it was that he covertly implied he would be available to continue to see, love, nurture and support them, when in reality he had no intention of doing so. Date lying of many kinds is common for both men and women. Generally, neither men nor women want to ‘hurt’ another person with the truth of how they feel. Both men and woman can turn on the charm at the beginning and seem to be giving and caring, only to turn out to be using the other for their own neediness. What is the way out of being at the other end of lies? Learn and practice the Inner Bonding process, learning to trust and value yourself so you can stay tuned into your own intuition and speak your truth. Practice Inner Bonding so that you can learn to give yourself the approval and attention that you are trying to get from another, so that you are not so vulnerable to others’ approval or disapproval. And, practice Inner Bonding so that you don’t take it personally when someone does lie to you. Their lie is more about them than it is about you.

eing invited to submit an article on the theme of ‘Loving Now’ my first thought was to write about the heart, as it is in traditional Chinese medicine; the emperor of the organs, the seat of the soul and the transmitter of love. I was going to write about the chi-cycle time of the heart, the magical two hours between 11am and 1pm each day when you have an audience with the emperor, when you are closest to your soul and to your purpose. This is the time of the Fire element, when you can fan the flames of your love and spread this to your partner. But traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is nothing if not practical and successful relationships are about much more than the heart. A healthy sex life is considered essential as well and this means a compatible sex drive is important. If you are in a relationship with someone that you love but you have a mismatched sex drive, it doesn’t matter what your heart is up to, you are heading for an emotional challenge. Our sex drive is connected to our kidneys not our heart. So really on the topic of Loving Now I should be writing a long, poetic essay about kidneys, but it just doesn’t sound romantic. If you mention ‘kidneys’ people tend to think of a dish you can order in a restaurant, and one that no one really likes. But in a good relationship our kidneys play just as an important role as our heart does. They store our life force, known as Jing and this is directly connected to our sex life. But our kidneys are also ‘the mother of yin and yang’ and in TCM everything is about yin and yang including sex and relationships, so this is the angle I’m going to explore the idea of Loving Now from. Yin and yang are the big forces that shape the universe. But, like a set of Russian dolls, there are layers within layers. There is the yang part of each day and the yin part of the day, there are the yang humans – generally considered to be men – and the yin humans, generally considered to be women. But then each individual, regardless of their gender, is either yin or yang. We even have a yin or corporeal soul, the Po, and a yang or ethereal soul, the Hun. Life is a shifting dance between yin and yang from the macrocosmic to the microcosmic. If you want a loving and lasting relationship you

need to understand the forces of yin and yang and whether your own nature is more yin or yang. Sex drive is a great indicator of this. If you want lots of sex lots of the time chances are you are a more yang type. If you don’t think about sex for months, chances are you are a more yin type. Sex drive is not gender related. There is a stereotypical version of the yang man who wants sex five times a week (or day) and the yin woman who wants to have sex once a month. But I see just as many yang women who want sex daily (or more) in relationships with yin men who are happy with once a month. This mismatch also happens in same-sex relationships, and it is not about men or women but about yin and yang or life forces. All sex drives are normal. It is only an issue when one partner wants more or less sex than the other and it has a negative effect on a relationship. By the time two people sit in front of me for relationship counselling a mismatched sex drive has become the source of emotional pain and blame, guilt and judgement. The partner who doesn’t want sex decides the other person’s sex drive is abnormal and then tells them so, and vice versa. I always start these sessions by telling the yang person there is nothing wrong with them for wanting sex all day (unless it’s a pathological high sex drive coming from an organ malfunction rather than their constitution). Likewise for the yin person there is nothing ‘wrong’ with not wanting sex for months. I believe we choose a body before we incarnate and that might be either a yin or yang type and each naturally has a differing sex drive. Regardless of this though, there is a recommended healthy level of sexual activity. Just because you feel like having sex daily doesn’t mean you should and just because you don’t feel like having sex doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. In some cases I treat, the simple step of devising a ‘sex schedule’ resolves the issue. Once you are over 30 and under 70 and in fairly good health, I recommend scheduling sex for twice a week, at a certain time on a certain day and then sticking to the plan. No excuses. People initially really, really resist this. We think that love is spontaneous and driven by the heart and assume sex, as a physical expression of love, should be too. Sure, when you are young, but as you get older or spend longer in a relationship things change and sometimes a more practical approach is needed. People plan their career, their weekends, their grocery shopping so why not sex too? Once you try the sex schedule things really start to change. As well as implementing a sex schedule you need to work on understanding your nature, whether it is yin or yang. The great thing is you can control and change this. We can be masters of our own inner universe. Yang people can moderate their sex drive by doing chi-gung and having regular acupuncture to control excessive energies. Yin types can build their yang through martial arts and kidney building herbs. So within ourselves yin and yang are not finite states. I was originally more of a yang type but after a couple of years of hard

drugs I became a yin type. I’d get a fright if a rabbit looked sideways at me. But you can change this. We all already know how. Right now you can put this magazine down and charge into the kitchen, have three cups of really strong coffee, turn on the TV and radio, get hyped-up and make lots of phone calls. This is a yang state. Or you can go and do relaxation therapy and experience yin. One of the related things that comes up in relationship counselling when addressing yin and yang and sex, is the misconception that women and men have a different ‘nature’ and accordingly different roles; for example the man initiates and the woman receives. It is a popular idea and there are plenty of books on how we come from different planets and some can read maps and others can’t. But I don’t agree with this view. If you go into a relationship thinking that because you are the woman your job is to support or nourish someone else and be receptive, you are imposing external conditions on yourself that may not be in accord with your nature. If you enter a relationship thinking that because you are the man, you are the driver, the provider and you have to give someone else what they need to make them happy, it can become a big problem. I think we are past all that divisive men and women stuff now. For me the topic ‘Loving Now’ also means loving in the 21st century, in the year 2012 and beyond. It is no longer about men and women, it is about people. We are humans on earth and we have a common goal; we need to be working with yin and yang, the forces that shape us so we can shape a new world. I believe that we should enter a relationship not as a man or woman, but as what I call a ‘self-contained unit’. Our partners are not there to make us happy; we are here to make ourselves happy. Part of this is working on not needing anything from anyone else and understanding your own nature, rather than behaving according to a gender-specific concept of what your nature should be. I’m not saying we don’t need each other ; of course we do spiritually and physically. We have our two souls, Hun and Po. The need for physical union is Po and the need for spiritual union, for our soul mate, is Hun. Our Po or corporeal soul is form; it is connected to our body. It is how we experience vigour, power and energy. Our Hun or ethereal soul is about feeling and ‘discovery’ and is connected to our mind and spirit. In a relationship the idea is to have both Hun and Po engaged. If this is the case, when you have sex the sense of discovery never ends, even after 50 years, and this nourishes the relationship deeply. Sex without the Hun engaged, is Po. It is physical sex and is what is experienced in sex addiction, prostitution and pornography. It leads to separation because Po is all about separation. In a relationship sex without Hun becomes physical and it can lead to both parties losing interest in sex and then seeking extramarital affairs to recapture the sense of discovery. Loss of interest in sex is a big issue in relationship work, and it has

given rise to plenty of books on spicing up your sex life, by getting into PVC outfits and using porn for stimulation and so on. It has also given rise to a new range of high-tech sex toys, but these things are temporary. Spice it up metaphysically I say, with Hun. This is permanent. So, how to engage our Hun is the question. Luckily this was sorted out centuries ago with the development of practices such as yoga and tai-chi. These get you in touch with your Po and your Hun. So on Valentine’s Day it is nice to buy your partner flowers and chocolates and tell them you love them, but it’s even nicer to get into yoga or tai-chi and learn to manage your own yin and yang. Get in touch with your souls and bring your inner union to the relationship, this is what I think Loving Now should be all about!

Universal Law of Intuition It’s hard to go through life feeling like you’re not good enough. Do you nag yourself or others with questions about the way you look or how good/bad you are doing? Do you often seek other people’s opinion to confirm if you are doing it correctly or heading in the right direction? Do you compare yourself constantly with other people as a measure of your own self-worth? If you answered “yes” it’s time to have a look at what’s really going on here. You are focused on the outside of self to gain a sense of who you are. You are trying to discover your identity through opinions. When we ask someone something we are asking for an opinion. It’s an opinion because you might ask two people the same question and get two totally different answers. They are giving you what they believe is right for you based on their own beliefs, values and judgements. It’s still just their opinion and because of different beliefs systems and values the same question can have many different answers. So how can you truly know if their opinion is really the right answer for you? It can be helpful at times to compare ourselves and to seek another’s opinion or to gain another perspective as we grow and learn by not closing our conscious mind to new possibilities and evolvement. Sometimes in our life we may need a bit of help and guidance.

It becomes an issue when we use the opinions of others as a measure to judge ourselves and our lives or when we believe so much in the opinion of others that our own don’t have any value or worth. SUCCESS TRIBE

It can also become an issue when our own powerful opinions start judging others as good or bad or right and wrong and we feel the need to defend them in an aggressive manner or reaction. We can easily fall into the trap of trying to control and manipulate others with our opinions and not allow them to follow their own direction and process.

My opinion tells me that inside of everyone at the heart level lies a consciousness that every soul is connected to both here and gone. A centre of pure love and wisdom that knows all and accepts all. It knows that everything that is part of its creation has its own place and own process to discover. It knows you and it knows your individual process and it knows all the answers to the questions that you seek. This connection is to a wisdom that is eternal and has always been. You have the same connection as every other soul and the same ability as the ancient cultures before you such as the Mayans and Egyptians. Nothing has changed over time other than the opinions of man that have allowed us and even forced us to forget this natural instinct. It may be time for you to connect to your intuition and discover this connection. When you stop asking for everyone’s opinion and you stop shouting at everyone, you will find it becomes silent and peaceful. You find you don’t actually have much to say. You can now start to hear the wisdom and guidance from the heart of you. You have always had access to this wisdom that you feel in your being and hear through words of wisdom in your mind. You can ask yourself a question and while you are silent and with no opinion, you will find your heart will give you the answer. You can’t trick your heart; it’s your soul connection to all and while we can be misled through the minds thinking, you can’t deceive the wisdom of the heart. Correct answers and guidance will always have an inner feeling of knowing. If the mind would allow us to listen and accept the answer even when it’s not what we want to hear, we would find it’s always correct for us and our journey at that time. You will know what you need to do, you will be shown the answers to your questions. You will just know things with a vibration of knowing which is hard to describe and can really only be truly understood once it’s experienced. This article is my opinion and so I don’t want you to take it as gospel, I want you to try and discover this truth for yourself. Just like all my teachings I will never force anyone to come and listen to what I have to say and I will not force my opinion or teachings on anyone.

me. In my past it has made me question and doubt my own abilities and stopped me being who I truly am for many years. This only made me a very unhappy person as I struggled to find my identity through opinions. One day the penny dropped and I realised everyone is entitled to have their own belief, their own opinions and follow their own process and journey including me. When I realised this it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. The inner and outer struggle released. I could accept who I was and peacefully follow my own journey without trying to prove anything to anyone. This helped me connect even further to my intuitiveness and follow my journey with a lot more confidence. If this is resonating with you I ask you give this a try. Try and identify how much you rely on opinions or you give yours without being asked. I ask that you don’t seek out the opinions of others to feel confident or self-assured. Sit in silence and listen to your inner voice and feelings and allow the guidance of wisdom to lead you to where you need to be. Remember you can’t trick the soul so the feeling must vibrate at the same level as the thinking. Wisdom offers no judgement just acceptance to a process of being and evolving. with something large and hard in my throat, unable to get it out. My face red and my fists clenched, as I listened to him beat my mother. My mother screaming back at him, fighting him toe to toe. RAGE THERAPY: MOVE, DANCE , PLAY By Scott Sonnon

Some feel a latent rage when moving into deeper tension which has been locked away for a long time. Rage may make you feel out of control, like you’re not equipped with the tools to harness its explosive energy. Allow me to share with you a little about myself, and how I confronted and released of the rage within me through the martial arts. My earliest childhood memory was of my father beating my mother. No one, especially his family, understood his post traumatic trauma returning from the Korean war, and the insidious corrosion of our family it caused. My brother heard our mother crying in pain as she lay thrown in a heap on her bed. My brother told me to go in and see if she was okay. Terrified, I felt like I had done something wrong (an operating system lasting throughout my life). I couldn’t talk. I couldn’t say a word. I couldn’t move. I don’t remember anything else. Just fear. Pan forward 2 years; after the divorce, my mother had to raise us on her own. She had broken up with a man she had been dating who was drunk outside our trailer. He kicked the door in and started beating my brother and I. He had his hands around my throat, choking me. My mother knocked him over and off me. Livid and furious, “Don’t you EVER touch my kids!” she screamed. I covered my head and ran into my room. He then started on my Mother. I trembled

The door to our room flew open, then slammed shut and locked. My mother standing there broke one of the windows with her elbow and hefting us out, told us to run to the neighbour’s house and call the police. I screamed that I didn’t want to leave her, as she lowered us out the window in our pyjamas. Even as her ex-boyfriend kicked open the door, she looked at me calmly, told me gently that it would be okay, and told me to run as fast as I could. I don’t remember anything after that moment. Pan forward 3 years; my mother was steadily dating a new guy which I would meet that afternoon when we all went swimming in a stream up in the mountains. When we arrived, my mother went off swimming by herself. I forget why; maybe I didn’t know. I felt nervous. This frighteningly large steelworker said to me sternly, with a low, forceful voice that he was going to marry my mother and be my father now; and he was in charge now. Erupted with a rage that I couldn’t understand, I began screaming, “NO! You’re not my father,” but he pushed me underwater and held me there. Thrashing futilely, he pulled me out, and I gasped for air. He asked me if I was ready to obey. Fury filled me, and I lashed out at him. He pushed me underneath again. But my scream gulped mouthfuls. I don’t remember what happened afterwards. He became my first step-father. Fourth grade and a kid in the playground stole out of my backpack a coin that my brother lent to me for “show and tell.” Telling the teacher on the playground, the teacher accused me of lying. Like a volcano I was on the other kid, grabbing at the coin to get it back. The teacher pulled me by the arm into the school, to his office and shut the door. He pulled out a baffled paddle. On the 10th time he hit me, it snapped in two over my lower back. Although I don’t remember what happened afterwards, I do remember that later that year he was fired for the abuse.

Four years later, I was in 7th grade, new to the different building where teachers unsuccessfully attempted to integrate grades 7-12. I was one of their “problem kids” who “always seemed to find trouble.” A gang of 11th grade students walked behind me taunting me. I ignored the main perpetrator, even though that burning lump in my throat started to form. Not getting the response he wanted he started stepping on the backs of my shoes, then pushing my books out of my arms, then flicking my ears… EXPLOSION…... I turned around and hit him as hard as I could in the groin. He went down hard and limp. His friends were in hysterics laughing and making fun at him for this little, fat kid with horn-rimmed glasses knocking him down. Suddenly, he was off the ground, holding me in a headlock. I couldn’t breathe (again). He drove my head into the concrete wall. I blacked out. I don’t remember what happened after that. These experiences are only highlights of many more graphic events from that time. I have been terrorized by many more physical fights, and the much more toxic anticipation of violence. Within myself I felt so much rage and fear and feeling trapped and hopeless and at the same time vulnerable and exposed. What followed from that point forward was an ongoing pattern, repeating this drama over and over throughout my childhood. I didn’t understand why the meanest people always seemed to peg me as the object of their animosity. Incapable of understanding why they targeted me, I couldn’t keep my mouth shut. I’d explode against them. As a freshmen in high school, I landed in a psychiatric hospital as an in-patient in the children’s ward, admitted by a crying mother who didn’t understand what was ‘wrong’ with her child. I learned I had to do what they told me and I would be set free. This discovery compelled me to mask and suppress the rage (so I thought). When finally released, by law no one at my

school was supposed to learn where I had been. Unsurprisingly, one teacher told another teacher which was overheard by a student… a week later everyone knew. Reinserted into mainstream population, the negative stigma amplified tenfold. As a freshman, a senior approached me because for the photosensitive eye protection my doctor had me wear in school. He asked me if I thought I was “cool” to wear sunglasses in school. His first strike slapped the glasses from my face. The second punched my eyes and my head bobbed backward several times before I realized what had happened. For some reason it didn’t hurt, but actually gave me euphoria. Then the explosion…… When a teacher pulled me off of him, the blood pooled underneath his head. Despite the crowd of witnessing students and teachers, I was suspended for always “bringing out the worst in others” (the vice-principle’s words that day to my mother.) My mother drove me home and dropped me off as she returned to work, seething with disappointment in my actions. When I returned to school a week later, a senior with two of his friends cornered me and held me down, repeatedly punching my stomach so no bruises appeared for evidence. I threw up a lot of blood. A pattern in my victimizers materialized though: If I fought back, they ganged up on me. If I ran away, they found me. If I smiled because it didn’t hurt, they beat me unconscious. But, if I rolled with the punches and kicks and pretended as if they really hurt, my would-be attackers would stop feeling successful, their drama played out to conclusion by me fulfilling my part of the social contract as a victim. Their group dynamics, posture, movements, expressions, gestures, syntax and words burned into my brain as I studied them through the fog. I found myself in martial arts, some would say, “obviously.” They attracted me for reasons most didn’t understand. I saw these martial arts masters with the greatest of composure, minimize harm to their would-be attackers, and resolve conflicts without emotional arousal. Asking, “how?” led me

on a very long odyssey. Style after style I studied, some red-faced, arrogant “master” would try to teach me how to ‘fight back.’ Sometimes I laughed during sparring, as the “master” would beat me senseless and then tell me that I needed to be more “counter-aggressive.” Counter-aggression was counter-intuitive. Experience proved it to be an ineffective approach – force only begot more force. That much was obvious to me, though oblivious to the “masters” teaching how to “destroy an attacker.” Destroy? I just wanted to be left alone. In university majoring in Philosophy, I gravitated to the debate and rhetoric classes, enjoying most the professors who managed to pick apart seemingly superior arguments with calculated ease and lack of emotion; a verbal compliment to my martial arts exploration. But there, I encountered a new martial art, one of yielding and blending with force; one where if attacked you folded around attacks and rolled with the punches. It resonated with me! It would work, since I had already proven it successful intuitively throughout my life. Years followed as I delved deeply into this practice of yielding to force. I fought around the world, fought some of the best in the world – beat some, lost some. But that wasn’t important to me. It wasn’t the fighting that made any difference to me whatsoever, but the efficiency of my emotional calm during violence. No freedom comes from escape. You can only be free, if you can stay present in the worst of situations and not be emotionally attached to the excessive stress of negativity. Martial art allowed me to cathartically release my pent up rage without exploding. Rage wasn’t part of me, and exploding wasn’t how I needed to respond to threats. Rage is only what happens when you suppress how you feel, like a pressure cooker to emotions, which elicits reflexive defence mechanisms. Martial arts (and philosophical debate) took the lid off allowing me to see that I’ve always had the tools I needed if I could keep my head cool under pressure without the defensive reflexes being triggered.

Martial arts, yoga, dance, and other movement methods became rage-therapy. Moving in certain ways removed the lid from the pressure cooker. You don’t explode, if you don’t suppress. Movement increases your sensitivity to force as it really is, not force as your reflexes interpret it. Excessive bottled up stress triggers defence mechanisms to protect its survival. If you’re heavily armoured and you feel pressure against that armour, it’s indiscriminate – it’s a threat and you explode. But if you release that tension, when you experience force, your body folds around it, like when you press your finger into your skin - Perfectly agile and accommodating. In that malleable nature, we become invulnerable. I stopped fighting. And to prove it to myself, I sought one last time to find the “perfect fight” where I could efficiently perform against some of the world’s best and remain emotionally calm. Finally finding my perfect fight by winning the 2010 World Martial Arts Games, I learned that I can prevent accumulating excessive stress without discharge. Don’t put on a lid on the pressure cooker. Move, dance, play. Movement keeps the lid off. Movement keeps you sensitive to the actual events, not the false threats misperceived by excessive stress. Fear can be understood as False Evidence Appearing Real. Excessive stress makes you feel it’s worse than it is. Excessive stress builds and reinforces it. You can’t help others until you first help yourself. Being able to recover from and resist excessive stress dramatically changes how you view others; it softens critical judgment and prevents misperceiving threats. Everyone suffers, and if we realize the source of our own suffrage, we can truly empathize with the plight others endure. It allowed me to look back upon my poorly equipped father, returning from war, and unable to transition to non-combative domesticity. How different would our lives have been if he had been readied with the tools and techniques to recover from and resist excessive stress? His trauma caused him to sacrifice his entire family life.

Releasing my rage, I now thank him for his sacrifices, go. You have the tools, because movement can heal, like it did for me. even though he didn’t choose those. I wish you all the best on your own odyssey. Don’t hesitate to talk about any emotion, image or sensation, because sometimes it can appear that they are real. But they are not. They are only biochemical echoes stored by excessive stress. As you move, those feelings, sensations and images may bubble to your brain. They may not. They may just burn off through your movement. Don’t re-invent the wheel. If you want to be successful, then study the most successful people. They make countless mistakes and leave a long string of failures.  Show me a person who hasn’t failed much and you’re showing me a person who hasn’t achieved much. As you study the most successful people, you begin to realize that they failed their way to success. study in Mayo Clinic Proceedings  found that combining computer time with moderate exercise reduces your risk of memory loss compared with either activity alone.

Researchers interviewed over nine hundred 70 – 93 year olds after they completed a questionnaire about how often they exercised and used a computer. Just to clarify, “MODERATE EXERCISE” included activities like:

1 brisk walking

2 doubles tennis

3 yoga

4 Weightlifting

Mentally stimulating activities, on the other hand, included:

5 reading

6 social interaction

7 using a computer

So why did researchers single out computers? Because so many people in this study used one on a regular basis.

“The aging of baby boomers is projected to lead to dramatic increases in the prevalence of dementia,” lead researcher Dr. Yonas and E.Geda said. “As frequent computer use has becoming increasingly common among all age groups, it is important to examine how it relates to aging and dementia. Our study further adds to this discussion.”

In other words, the synergistic effects of exercise and mental stimulation best protected these participants against cognitive decline. If you’ve read any of my books, especially The Most Effective Ways to Live Longer you know how much I value exercise and learning as critical tools to age better.

Evolution designed us to use our bodies for physical activity and our minds for learning, and those demands don’t diminish as we age.

Simply put, people who constantly challenge their minds and bodies live longer and more happily than complacent, sedentary people. After all, you probably saw the recent study in The Journal of the American Medical Association that showed people who sit more often have shorter life spans. Evolution designed us to use our bodies for physical activity and our minds for learning, and those demands don’t diminish as we age. In fact, a study in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise concluded that “no segment of the population…can benefit more from exercise than the elderly.” Those benefits go beyond physical health: a study in that same journal showed that moderate- and high-intensity resistance exercise programs both benefitted cognitive functioning. In other words, exercise can boost your mental power. And when your mind remains active and alert, you’re more likely to exercise than if you’re in a mental fog or TV-induced trance.

I never get tired of talking about my favourite exercise, burst training, which you can do in your own home and requires just minutes a day. You can devote all that time you save to learning a new language or rereading your favourite novel.

No matter what your age, I want to propose two challenges to prevent memory loss and keep your mind and body in prime condition: Develop and maintain a vigorous exercise program. Brisk walking is good, but I want you to step it up a few notches. Try a new exercise class or sport, for instance, to boost your physical and mental skills. I never get tired of talking about my favourite exercise, burst training, which you can do in your own home and requires just minutes a day. You can devote all that time you save to learning a new language or rereading your favourite novel. Keep your mind active by always engaging in new activities. It doesn’t need to be anything rigorous: mental stimulation might include reading a new author or seeing a film outside your favourite genre. And as this study showed, online learning provides another way to keep your brain stimulated. Join forums about your favourite topics, for instance, or learn a new program. Harvard University made a list of seven activities you can do to keep your brain healthy and active at any age. Their number-one strategy is the same as mine: keep learning!

n “Women: Running into Trouble”, physicist and author Kiefer, explains: Studies demonstrate beyond any doubt that in women, cardio chronically shuts down the production of the thyroid hormone, T3.

T3 is the body’s preeminent regulator of metabolism by throttling the efficiency of cells. T3 acts in various ways to increase heat production. When T3 levels are normal, the body burns enough energy to stay warm and muscles function at moderate efficiency. Too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) and the body becomes inefficient making weight gain almost impossible. Too little T3 (hypothyroidism) and the body accumulates body fat with ease, almost regardless of physical activity level.’ From an evolutionary perspective, Kiefer discusses our adaptive response to running that results in diminishing returns. He also highlights another important factor :

MUSCLE LOSS But wait. By acting now, you too can lose muscle mass. That’s right. No more muscle because too much steady-state cardio triggers the loss of muscle. This seems to be a two-fold mechanism, with heightened and sustained cortisol levels triggering muscle loss, which up regulates myostatin, a potent destroyer of muscle tissue. Oh yeah — say good bye to bone density too — it declines with the muscle mass and strength. And long-term health? Out the window as well. The percentage of muscle mass is an independent indicator of health. Lose muscle, lose bone, lose health—all in this nifty little package. The “cardio craze” — and it is a form of insanity — is on my hit list and I’m determined to kill it. I don’t know what else I can say. There are better ways to lose fat, be sexy and skinny for life and better ways to

prepare for the stage. Women, you need to get off the damn treadmill; I don’t care what you’re preparing for. Stop thinking a bikini-body is at the end of the next marathon or on the other side of that stage. It’s not if you use steadystate cardio to get there — quite the opposite. The show may be over, the finish line might be crossed, but the damage to your metabolism is just starting.

In fact, if you are one of the millions of Americans that are chronically stressed or if you have already damaged your metabolism, then that ‘good feeling’ comes with a serious metabolic price tag. That ‘good feeling’ is produced from catecholamines. Catecholamines are molecules that are released by the adrenal glands in response to stress. They include epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (the “fight-or-flight” stimulatory hormones) and dopamine. What Happens When Catecholamines Are Chronically Elevated? Similar to a honeymoon. You feel euphoric at first, but that feeling wears off and an ugly side appears…

The less resilience, the less it can tolerate exercise. And the less it can properly manage catecholamine’s & other hormones. Yes I know, when we exercise and do it right, it does feel good. But it can also be done wrong and feel good. That feeling of sugar & spice does

Catecholamines are also involved in addiction. The same phenomenon (to varying degrees) is happening in many cardio-based group fitness classes like Spinning or Physique 57. Notice those ‘serious’ people in line thirty minutes before the class all ‘amped up‘? They’re getting their fix and they are dead serious about it. FI T N E S S E D G E

to, but that doesn’t mean you should. I know you want to feel better from exercise, but you’re not feeling crappy because you are lacking exercise. Rather, you feel crappy because your metabolism is stressed. The more stressed a metabolism is, the less exercise is appropriate. And when exercise is appropriate, cardio is a bad choice. Want to lose weight? Change your diet. Don’t do cardio. Betcha Can’t Eat Just One – Dopamine & Body Fat    Dopamine has many functions in the brain, including important roles in behaviour and cognition, voluntary movement, motivation, punishment and reward, inhibition of prolactin production (involved in lactation and sexual gratification), sleep, mood, attention, working memory, and learning.2 For those interested in learning more about how our bodies’ reward system relates to food, eating habits & body fat…wait, let me be clearer : If you want to know a primary reason why so many people eat garbage, and how corporate food production is largely responsible for our overweight/obesity and children’s health problems by scientifically hoodwinking our evolutionary drives for food & pleasure, then meet the scientists who create flavours that make foods and beverages so tasty that critics say they’re addictive – “The Flavorists” Tweaking Tastes and Creating Cravings. More than 60% of the American population doesn’t do much exercise (and what little they do is questionable) and 25% do nothing. For the relatively small number of people who decide to take responsibility for their health, I hope you see the idea that ‘any exercise is good exercise‘ is not true and there are better choices for exercise than the popular ones.

s a metabolic typing advisor with Health Excel, I agree with Dr. Jonny Bowden’s recipe for the Perfect Diet i.e There is no perfect diet or ‘one size that fits all’. Most people can run their bodies on a “factory specified fuel” to run optimally. This is a great place to start as a solid foundation prior to us looking at how we may uniquely metabolize foods. Dr. Westin A Price – Dentist and author of “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration” circled the world in the 1920’s and 30’s and found a sinister pattern among the primitive populations. Whether the groups were Eskimo’s, North and South American Indian’s or Australian Aborigines, if these groups followed their traditional nature based diets, they enjoyed robust health. Once they turned to a “civilized” diet or “white man’s food” full of processed, sugar laden foods, they spiralled down into ill health. This included – malformed teeth and bones plus a SUCCESS TRIBE

variety of illnesses worsening by the generation. Dr. Jonny Bowden mentions that anthropologist’s tell us that man’s genes are 99.99% the same as Palaeolithic man. If this is so, then perhaps we ALL need to focus on is getting back to our roots with a Palaeolithic style of diet. I have no doubt that Dr. Price would agree!

Top 10 Ways to Jump-Start Weight Loss (from page 109 of the Diet Boot Camp workbook)   Eat protein at every meal, including breakfast. Eliminate wheat- and flour-based products for the time being. And yes, that definitely includes bread and pasta. Eliminate “food products”. Don’t eat unlimited amounts of fruit and be careful with the extra-sweet, extra-ripe variety. For now, keep fruits to two a day, and choose the lowsugar, high-fiber variety. good choices. For now, fruit should be eaten alone or with something light like nuts or a little cheese. Lose the fruit juice. Reduce or eliminate dairy for the time being, especially cow’s milk. Exceptions: reasonable amounts of cheese and occasional portions of yogurt, but not the fat-free kind (it contains way too much sugar). Try eliminating alcohol. You can always go back to moderate drinking later on if it works for you. Stop using vegetable oils such as sunflower, safflower and corn. The supermarket kinds are highly refined, and oxidize easily when heated, contributing to arterial plaque. Worry less about the amount of fat you and pay more attention to the kind of fat you eat. The worst are fried foods, margarine and foods that contain hydrogenized or partially hydrogenized oils. The best is omega-3, found in fish and flaxseed oil. n Sunday I will hit my 18 months of Gerson mark. I have been counting down to this day ever since I first stepped foot into the Gerson clinic on 15th April 2010, thinking it would signify the end of my Gerson journey. However, after speaking with Charlotte Gerson and my Gerson doctor I’ve decided to keep going with the therapy for another six months, making it two years

in total. This is how long the Therapy usually is, and I want to do it properly so that I never have to do the whole thing again. As much as I’ve loved this journey, once will definitely be enough.

6.45am: I walk upstairs and into the meditation

The good news though is that on Sunday I’m able to reduce the program from 13 juices each day to nine, and my enemas will drop from four a day to three. I’m so excited!! That means I’ll be able to go out in the afternoons for a couple of hours without juice. I’ll also be able to sit through a whole movie without having to pause it several times to make juice. Oh, happy days.

I always read something inspiring while I’m doing my enema, to get me into a good frame of mind for the day. At the moment it’s The Greatness Guide Book 2 by Robin Sharma for the second time.

6.30am: Enema done! Now it’s time for five

minutes of dry body brushing before jumping in the shower. I make sure I shower before the rest of the house wakes up and starts turning on taps. If there is water running anywhere else in the house while I’m in the shower I will get scorched.

I’ve finished cleaning the juicer I help Mum prepare lunch. She does the salad, potatoes and pumpkin while I chop the veggies for the hot pot. After that we go and lie outside to soak up some vitamin D and get 15-20 minutes of sun.

Turn the TV on to watch Ellen dancing through her studio audience – my absolute favourite part of Gerson Therapy has been being able to watch The Ellen DeGeneres Show every day while we eat lunch. We sit down to Hippocrates Soup, a big plate of salad with roast pumpkin, a baked potato and some cooked veggies.

1pm: Make and drink green juice (juice #8). Go back downstairs to answer emails and do more writing.

s I tell my patients and athletes all the time, what you eat is far more influential on your body (and your body shape!) than exercise can ever be. Each meal you eat exerts its influence upon your physiology, your psyche and your being for the entire time it is within the confines of your body. In a healthy body, the mouth to- anus transit time of a foodstuff is typically about 16 hours, while the last remains of a given meal should be accounted for in the stool in about 56 hours. Today, about 90% of the industrialized population is constipated so the influence of a foodstuff is prolonged. When most people exercise, the exercise isn’t of sufficient intensity to result in elevated metabolic effects for very long at all. For example, my experience is that, with the exception of the first time exerciser who gets rapid gains initially and then plateaus, those of you performing the same exercises over and over, such as typical cardio workouts, are getting metabolic benefits only until your heart rate drops off and your sweat dries. With intensive resistance training, you can get as much as 48 hours of elevated metabolism. That said, you are eating three times a day on average, and working out about three times a week as an average among the few who regularly exercise. How then can three workouts or even seven if you throw some cardio training in there, even begin to compete with as many as 21 meals? The workouts don’t have a fighting chance and a walk through the gym proves it in most instances!

The answer isn’t as simple as the fad diets on the market lead you to believe. The real answer is that you need to determine your metabolic type to discover what you should be eating. In my book How to Eat, Move and Be Healthy! I share my personal approach to how to find your metabolic type and eat accordingly. I also recommend that people read Bill Wolcott’s book The Metabolic Typing Diet for additional study, particularly if your health is challenged. I know that Dr.  Mercola himself subscribes to Bill Wolcott’s methods of metabolic typing. It is only when you eat the

Today, more than ever, we have people jumping from one diet to another diet, chasing almost every movie star (i.e., plastic surgeon) and pipe dream around the book store. To begin with, we’ve got to get away from all the corporate driven fads that prescribe against red meat and fat. These foods constitute the most bioavailable sources of the building blocks of anabolic steroid hormones. This is incredibly important since those hormones are tissue building substances. No amount of resistance training will be successful if your body lacks the appropriate materials to build its tissues. One need only realize that most of humanity survived millennia in the wild eating mostly the very red meats and fats you are warned against and we never suffered from heart disease until after we began hydrogenating vegetable oils! We were much more vital people when we ate animals and vegetables alone, not all this processed garbage that impersonates food. How many of you could survive a trip west through the rocky mountains in a wagon train on your sports bars? We must stop consuming commercial foods. Commercial farming of animals is the real source of whatever legitimate concern there is over red meat and animal fats. If you knew that the US DA had approved such things as cement dust, sewage, plastic chips, saw dust and dead animal remains as food additives for commercially raised animals, you’d probably think twice about saving money on food! You must also remember that animals bio-accumulate Environmental toxins in their bodies so eating commercially raised animals that are fed on commercially raised (pesticide laden) plants only serves to poison your body, reducing your ability to favourably respond to exercise. The solution is simple:

• RESPECT the animals enough to raise them correctly and respectfully so that they have enjoyed a life of their own before being sacrificed to support humanity • RESPECT yourself enough to only eat organic and free range meats and organic produce • RESPECT the planet enough to not support destructive commercialization of the food chain because every aspect of that process is devastating to the planet!

When you see what people are really consuming today – not genuine food, but rather a concoction of harmful chemicals – it isn’t hard to understand that no amount of exercising will make a difference to your body when laid on a foundation of commercial foods. In short, commercial foods can alter your body chemistry in ways that can inhibit the beneficial effects of your workout or even transform your workout from beneficial to detrimental. Skipping meals is also devastating to the exercising body, since it alters your hormonal response to match that of someone under significant stress. When your body releases stress hormones, they antagonize your anabolic, tissue building hormones and the very act of exercising serves only as a destructive force on the body. This very link between eating right for your metabolic type, eating only high quality food and eating regularly is broken so frequently among even the most elite athletes. The result is the highest levels of drug use in the sports and in the gym that I’ve ever witnessed in my entire athletic and professional career! So before you even think of hitting the gym, take the time to sit down and evaluate what you’re eating. I think you’ll find that making some simple changes to how and when you eat make a huge difference to how you look and feel.

How do you stay healthy while TRAVELLING Jessica Ainscough interviews “Girl On Raw” Robyn Gaw

W

hat are your non-negotiables when it comes to your diet?

I try not to be too rigid in my diet as I feel that my psyche does not bode well with deprivation, however I do aim for as natural and unprocessed as possible and I’ll never eat something that includes ingredients I cannot pronounce or don’t recognise. 

If you were trying to convert someone to your dietary philosophy, what would you make for them? I would most definitely begin by making a fruity green smoothie to demonstrate how tasty you can make drinking your greens (it worked when I took it to my boot camp class and left with an empty bottle.) Then I’d make my delicious grapefruit and fennel salad with lemon honey dressing, raw lasagne with basil pesto, sundried tomato sauce with pine nut cheese and finish off with glorious, cannot even tell its not dairy, creamy chocolate ice cream! Now I’m hungry! These recipes sound complicated but I love showing people what is possible with raw food! How do you Stay healthy while travelling? Oh it’s easy now as I’ve had plenty of practice, but the main things I adhere to are: Packing a travel blender (I like the Tribest Personal Blender) to make smoothies on the road to easily replace breakfast and/or lunch. Research your destination via the internet, social media etc to find your nearest health food stores, supermarkets and farmers markets. Pack some snacks for both the journey and for some time down the route. I love home-made trail mixes, raw macaroons, nut butters, fresh fruit and vegetables, kale chippies made in the dehydrator ahead of time. What are your go-to meals and snacks when you are super busy? I love nori sheets with premade nut cheeses/pâtés, banana and carob smoothie made with nut milk, and fresh fruit with almond butter.  Juices or smoothies: Which do you prefer? What’s your favourite combination? Well I feel like this is asking me which do I prefer, my husband or my son lol, but I’d say I go through phases. Smoothies are fabulous is you are travelling or short on time for prep and cleanup, but for detox purposes and general health regeneration I’m favoring fruit and veggie juicing a lot more right now! My fave green juice right now: any kind of greens (spinach, Cos/romaine lettuce, bok choy), cucumber, celery, apples, lemon, ginger. On page 19 of A.F. Beddoe’s book “Biological Ionization in Human Nutrition,” he states that: “Man does not live off the food he eats but off of the energy that is produced from the food he eats.” The energy you get from your food comes from the atoms and molecules of energy in your food. A reaction takes place as cationic food enters the digestive tract and encounters anionic digestive enzymes. To explain further, an ion is part of a molecule con-atom or a group of atoms that carry an electrical charge. Ions which carry positive charges are “cations.” Lemons are considered to be anionic, having more electrons (negatively charged ions) of energy as compared to cations (positively charged ions) in their atomic structure. Saliva, hydrochloric acid, bile and the stomach’s other digestive juices are also anionic. Lemon is one of the only foods on the planet that has more anions than cations in its atomic structure. When considering the electromagnetic properties of food, Dr. Beddoe points out that all foods are considered cationic with the exception of fresh, raw lemon juice. Some have suggested that the reason fresh lemon juice is similar to digestive enzymes is due to the low amount of sulphur in lemons. It should be noted that pasteurized and packaged lemon juice is cationic and, therefore, ineffective as a health remedy. Why I Started 21st Century Education & why I’m Committed to Changing the World’s Out-Dated Education System and the Australian Financial Planning Industry

I

t was 1991. I was frustrated with what I was learning at university, studying to be an accountant. I asked my mother, “Why isn’t there a university that teaches you how to be successful in life?”

Little did I know I’d planted a seed, and a decade later I decided to dedicate my life to creating an education system for today’s world; a 21st Century education system to replace our out-dated 19th Century education system. I believe ignorance is the major cause of the world’s problems and individual’s financial struggles. And education is the solution. My life transformed when I realised my education at school and university had failed me, and not taught me valuable lessons that could have easily been instilled. I realised I needed to study those with a PhD in results, not those with a PhD in theory, like mainstream education.

I decided to copy; something we were taught not to do at school. I call it modelling. Finding successful people or businesses and modelling them. This is the short cut to success. the fact every single Australian needs to become a millionaire in their lifetime in order to retire comfortably. (The latest superannuation industry stats say you need $1.1 – $1.3M for a comfortable retirement) So the Government tells Australians to go and visit a licensed financial planner. Which is not intelligent, nor is it common sense. At the Charity Youth Summit we hold across Australia, where schools send kids by the busload to access my 21st Century education, I ask teenagers the following question: “If you want to be rich, who should you study?”

Of course you wouldn’t. So why would you go see a financial planner, who in most cases has never invested their way to being rich, let alone invested at all? And one who has certainly not invested into the high commission paying, managed fund they’re trained to sell you. My millionaire mentor said to me, “Jamie, while a financial planner is telling you what to do with your money think to yourself, if they can show me how to retire one day, live my dreams, perhaps even become a millionaire… why haven’t they done it themselves?” It’s obvious.

There is no short cut other than modelling success. That is the fastest, smartest way to do it.

Of course the teenagers are smart enough to know the correct (and common sense) answer is A, a rich person.

I have many millionaire friends.Many in their twenties and thirties. And not one of us has made our money from seeing a financial planner.

Ask fully manured, sorry, fully matured adults… and they’re confused.

In fact I’ve studied many millionaires. Met and befriended many billionaires. And not one of them has said, “Jamie, you need to see a financial planner.”

It’s obvious you don’t need a financial planner. Australians need a Financial Education. Do you know how much investing financial planners have to do before they can get a license? Zero.

It’s the greatest rort I’ve ever seen.

Nil. None. Would you take your car to a mechanic who’d never had any experience fixing cars? Would you allow a doctor, who’d never ever operated on someone before, to operate on you? Would you even go to a hairdresser who’d only done a 2-week course from a manual and never actually cut hair before? Would you fly in a plane with a pilot who had never flown before?

I spent some time with Graham Golt, the man who owns the Swans football team and 5 major corporations in Sydney. We consult with one another each time I’m in Australia and every time I ask him about his mission statement. We sit there and refine it together until it is crystal clear. He looks up and sees exactly what he would love to create – he can see it in his mind. Each company provides a product, a service and an idea – I call it PSI – Product, Service, Idea. Every company must be grateful to share their PSI, and love and be inspired doing it. It’s absolutely essential for the growth and success of your business. It takes no effort for me to share from my heart what I love to share most, my products, services and ideas. I don’t need outside motivation to get up in the morning to serve the world. A company that does not have that type of love and appreciation for their product, service or idea will not explode and grow in business as much as they could if they had that inspiration.

our ability to focus, plan, feel or do anything is intimately tied to the mix of five different types of brainwaves your brain is producing at any given moment in time. Your brain produces multiple brainwaves simultaneously, but you are at your best when your brainwaves are perfectly aligned with what you are doing. But here’s the problem: Our overthinking, over-stressed culture forces our brains to stay in the beta wave pattern more than our brains were meant to. Older brother Mark (co founder of Facebook), she said, constantly harassed her to help out and come on board. She says he “stooped as low as getting their mum to influence her to join what at that time was some small internet company called Facebook” She went on to being the Head of Marketing at Facebook introducing several of the main products and also being nominated for an Emmy for Facebook’s political coverage. I even wrote a book on this trend called Time Rich: How to Have a Millionaire’s Lifestyle Inside 12 Months Without Needing to Become One. Tim Ferriss in his ‘The 4-hour Work-week’ taps into this trend as well. Ashton Kutcher invested into Airbnb for this reason. It’s a classic example of an internet business that enables people to stay in some luxury places but at non luxury prices. In the States you can sometimes get to fly on private jets for as little as $499 per person when they have backstops they wish to fill.
