Food allergies account for about ten percent of all the allergies seen in dogs. They also generally account for twenty percent of the causes of itching and scratching in dogs. Just how a pet becomes sensitized to a particular agent in the food, which in turn creates a complicated antibody response in the dogs intestinal tract, is not very well understood. Despite our lack of understanding of how these food allergies affect our dogs, we do, however, understand many things: the symptoms, how to diagnose food allergies, and also how to treat them. Food allergies affect both male and female dogs, and can show up as early as five months and as late as 12 years of age. But most cases occur when the dog is between 2 and 6 years of age. The symptoms of food allergies are similar to those of most allergies seen in dogs. The primary symptom is itchy skin that mostly affects the face, feet, ears, forelegs, armpits, and the area around the anus. Symptoms could also include chronic or recurrent ear infections, hair loss, hot spots, and skin infections that respond to antibiotics but reoccur after antibiotics are discontinued. Dogs with food allergies sometimes have an increased incidence of bowel movements during the day. In order to diagnose a food allergy properly, owners can start their dog on a food trial. A food trial means feeding the dog a food source that the animal has never eaten before consisting of protein and carbohydrates for at least 12 weeks. Rabbit or venison are good choices of protein because they are rarely used in manufacturers dog food. You can use potatoes as the carbohydrate. The new food source is the only thing that the dog should eat for the full 12 weeks. This means no treats, flavored medications, rawhide, or pig's ears. Nothing but the special food and water. Plus, the dog should not be allowed to roam because he could have access to outside food or garbage. If the dog shows a marked reduction or elimination of the symptoms after the twelve weeks, then the animal is placed back on the original food. If the symptoms return after going back on the original diet, the diagnosis of a food allergy is confirmed. Feeding dogs a home-made meal is a great way to avoid giving your dog foods that they are allergic to. You can periodically offer your dog new ingredients in order to determine the exact ingredients that are causing the food allergy. If the dog's symptoms have subsided on the special diet, then you can add a meat that they may have had in the past -- like beef or chicken -- for two weeks. If the dog shows no symptoms, then you can add a different ingredient. If the dog begins to show symptoms again, then you can assume that the newest ingredient added to the diet was one of the things the dog was allergic to. Home-made diets are a great way to ensure that proper ingredients are used and balanced with the correct amount of vitamins and minerals.
