Editorial Another school year has passed and we are back with a brand new issue of Potpourri. This year has been special in a way. Our school has entered its adulthood and celebrated its last teenage year as well. Yes, our school is already nineteen years old and it has a great anniversary ahead. So what has happened during this spectacular year? We have organized and enjoyed many already traditional events, including Halloween,

We have once again travelled the world, from the US to near-by Poland. In this issue of Potpourri you can the UK, follow our footsteps in Paris, Strassbourg and Vienna, or count how many places we have discovout how the student life looks like in countries like England, USA, Ireland, Denmark or Mexico where some of our schoolmates have spent this year. The school itself has also been vey busy all the time.

Thanks to all the students who have shared their views, opinions, photos and who have contributed with their articles. I cannot forget to mention Miss with the preparation of this year’s Potpourri. And a great thanks goes, of course, to all of you for inventing, organizing, travelling, providing us with material and keeping us busy with writing articles. May is supposed to be the month of love. However, this year it has resembled a month of endless rain instead. So we have decided to use this issue of Potpourri to convey the message of love in all its forms to you, focusing especially on what we, students, love on the student life. I hope you’ll enjoy it! I had previously studied in Italy for a summer, so I considered trying to go back there, but I just felt like I needed to try something different. I got the feeling that I wanted to go somewhere that no one I knew had ever

�rsko ,,I immediately found that Irish people’s use of English is slightly different from the British.� ceived a letter from the Ministry of Education saying that I was chosen for a scholarship to study in Ireland. I was looking forward to living in a different country, experiencing a new culture and making new friends. Thanks to studying through English not have any major problems with the language. I immediately found that Irish people’s use of English is slightly different from the British. I land. I was given a very good host family. To my surprise I had eight new siblings. The family has a huge house and a very nice garden. The educational system here is very ondary school for boys. The school was multi-cultural as there was one other Slovak and a Ukrainian student. What is special about the schools in Ireland is that all the pupils have to wear school uniforms, mobile phones are prohibited in lessons and everyday in the morning the deputy

principal comes to each class group and writes the names of people that are absent from school. School starts at children to and from school. One thing I liked in Ireland was chemistry classes on Wednesdays when we did experiments. However if you tion the chemistry teacher would make you write it up to thirty times, depending on the number of words it contained. I liked the fact that students could choose the subjects they wanted to do. What I liked the most about the educational system is that there are two weeks of holidays for ary. The best of all is three months of summer holidays. There are just only three weeks left for me in Ireland. All I can say now is that it all happened so fast and I can’t wait to see my family and friends from school. I really appreciate that they stayed in touch with me and they did not forget about me.

Vermont ,,Probably the most astonishing thing about Putney was that everybody was weird, including teachers and other people who work at Putney.” When I left for Putney School in Vermont, progressive independent school where students take care of farm animals in the morning and work with their teachers as if they were best friends for the rest of the day, little did I know how different would it be when compared to schools in Slovakia.

Yet the majority was willing to admit their weirdness, there were some exceptions, who were just too “cool” to do so. But, that’s just how it works everywhere. Regardless of the amount of coolness you possess, all have to work to keep the community working. Putney students have to get work job credits in order to graduate. Among the credited jobs are barn

every morning, including Sundays, it was fantastic. I got to take care of the cows, sheep, pigs and chickens. I got to see many of sunrises and enjoyed the rest of the day with more energy than anyone else, which would unfortunately upset all of my classmates. Waking up early gave me so much that I decided to choose another morning job, oven stoker, and since I was an international student who was staying only for one year, I got all the classes and jobs and other things you usually have to apply for immediately and without further deliberation.

about their jobs, I enjoyed it very much and think that it’s a wonderful part of Putney’s progressive education. Another thing that makes Putney so different is the art department. Students not only have the opportunity to pursue their favorite kind of art during their academic time, I took music intensive and music theory, they are also required to attend evening art classes, which range from music, dance, sculpture, blacksmithing, jewelry to pottery and stained glass. I myself think that this is one of the best parts of the Putney School. I used the term one of the best parts, intentionally, because there’s something that’s even more rad. Imagine that the last week of each semester would be devoted to work on projects of your own interest, whether they are academic or non-academic, imagine that there would what Putney people refer to as a Project Week. You write your own proposal and if it gets approved you are good to go and have fun with you project. It might be writing a paper on some political issues or a book you like, or building a geodesic dome, making jewelry, writing songs, making a sword, creating documentary or getting ready for marathon. You can do whatever you want, as long as you can prove that it relates to your current curriculum. Basically, it is a small dream come true and without a doubt the most favorite part of the school year for all Putney students.

I don’t know if I should continue or not, but there are still some pretty awesome things to tell you about. I promise that this will be the last one, though. I bet all of you guys

Severnå Karolína ,,North Carolina is a wonderful place. Everything is fried!� Hello everybody, I’ve been having a great year so far, everything has worked out well for an Indian Reservation. I think the schools over here are a lot similar to schools back at home. My school offers a large variety of subjects, so I tried to take the classes which I couldn’t take in Slovakia. The most interesting classes I’m taking are International Relations and Marine Science, which is also my favorite class. We don’t just sit in the classroom but we have gone scuba diving and we work I hope ya’ll are also having a great year!

The worst moment of the championship for us came when we were defeated by Mongolia, a really unexpected twist of events.
