November housing data shows foreclosures are still a plague By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com

TRI-CITIES — Foreclosures continued to plague the local housing market in November. According to data supplied by foreclosure tracking company RealtyTrac, home foreclosure activity in and around the TriCities remained high in November. RealtyTrac’s data indicated that 108 homes were moving through the foreclosure process last month in the four ZIP codes that include the Tri-Cities of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia, portions of Campton Hills and surrounding unincorporated areas. That marked a 21.3-percent increase from the same month in 2011, when 89 homes were in the foreclosure process in those four ZIP codes, RealtyTrac’s data revealed. The November numbers also indicated no change in local foreclosure activity from October, when 108 homes in those four ZIP codes were also foreclosed upon. Foreclosure activity also increased in the

surrounding communities of Elburn, Sugar Grove, Maple Park, North Aurora and South Elgin. In a nine ZIP code region that includes the Tri-Cities and those surrounding communities, RealtyTrac reported 234 foreclosures in November, an increase of 25.8 percent from November 2011. The numbers also marked an increase of about 15 percent from October. Foreclosed homes and other so-called distressed properties make up a large portion of the local housing market. Home sale reports provided by local real estate trade associations indicate homes sold under foreclosure or through short sale may account for up to one-third of all residential properties sold in the Tri-Cities and Kane County. Data indicates those sales are increasing, meaning the distressed properties are finding willing buyers and are placed into potentially more secure ownership situations. Throughout Kane County, RealtyTrac reported 971 foreclosures, with the bulk of

those located within the county’s largest cities, Aurora and Elgin. About one in every 187 homes in Kane County is considered in foreclosure, RealtyTrac said. That represented the second-highest foreclosure rate of any county in the state, behind Kendall County, which logged a rate of one in every 154 homes. Statewide, the foreclosure rate was about one in every 392 homes, the third-highest foreclosure rate among U.S. states, behind only Florida and Nevada. RealtyTrac reported that foreclosure activity increased in Illinois for the 11th consecutive month in November.

Huntley senior Justin Herbert regards former Red Raiders thrower Marcus Popenfoose as inspirational and as a mentor. As a freshman, Herbert watched Popenfoose closely. Popenfoose won the Class 3A state discus and was runner-up in the shot put. Now, whenever Popenfoose is back in town, Herbert throws with him as often as possible. Herbert has not yet come close to the distances Popenfoose threw, but he will emulate him in another way. Thanks to his offseason work and dedication, Herbert will throw at the NCAA Division I level next year. He committed to Eastern Illinois University for a partial scholarship to throw for the Panthers. “Their throwing coach [Jessica Sommerfeld] knows our throwing coach

He has come a long way since last May, when he did not qualify for the IHSA Boys Track and Field state meet. “I scratched on the one [discus] throw that would have qualified me,” he said. “It was a pretty tough sectional.” Herbert is throwing up to 6 feet more than last season, in the 45- to 46-foot range, and hopes to add more to that. This spring will be his first season rotating when he throws shot put, a technique he worked on with Popenfoose during the summer. “My shot put’s a mess right now, but I’m getting there,” Herbert said. “When Marcus is back, he always helps us. You see how calm he is, but he’s still aggres-

He’s definitely a big influence on me.” Raiders coach Jim Rolando felt Herbert was on track for bigger throws when the high school season ended. “He got a little bit of a later start and really progressed well,” Rolando said. “This year Justin made a big commitment to get stronger, quicker and more flexible.” Herbert and Huntley freshman Dominic Swanson have been working out with Dominic’s father, Gary Swanson, in a large garage adjacent to the Swanson’s home. Herbert benchpressed 281 pounds, deadlifted 468 and squatted 391 for a 1,140-pound total to win the 16-17 275pound division at the Amateur American Powerlifting Federation’s Illinois Raw Power Challenge recently. Herbert started benching 185 for 12 repetitions six weeks ago and now is doing 215 for 12 reps. “All this work will make a huge difference in the spring,” Rolando said.

Marengo details vision of interchange, growth By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com

MARENGO — Unlike its suburban neighbors, Marengo would be transformed into a self-reliant city filled with industrial and commercial development under an expansion outline presented Monday. But transforming a rural community into an atypical suburb is predicated on the city’s ability to court the Illinois Tollway Authority to build an interchange at Route 23 and Interstate 90. “In this plan, we are more about a more rounded, a more evolved, a more independent city type of development,” City Manager Gary Boden told about 15 residents in a joint meeting with the City Council and Plan Commission. The residents were there for an update on the city’s plan to expand west and

south. In a similar meeting in July, city officials formally revealed their desires and established a time line. On Monday, representatives from HR Green, the city’s engineering firm, detailed what kind of development is suitable for the city’s expansion, based on environmental and geographical research conducted since July. The firm identified opportunities for regional light industry, industries such as food processing that require large amounts of water and retail development in an area west of Route 23 and south toward I-90. HR Green has been contracted to turn a framework into a conceptual plan, and meet with other government entities that are needed to finance the city’s end goal: an interchange at Route 23 and I-90. The City Council approved the contracts totaling about $44,000 in a second

meeting Monday. Boden and Mayor Donald Lockhart said that based on conversations officials are having with tollway officials, the city is confident it can expand its limits to I-90, build an interchange and attract job-producing industries, The tollway, Boden said, has informed the city that nearly $125 million will be available, possibly as early as next year, for interchange construction along the I-90 corridor between Chicago and Rockford. Much as Huntley did, officials from the city and HR Green will reach out to neighbors such as McHenry County, Dekalb County and Northern Illinois University to gauge interest in funding an interchange. Construction of a full, $69 million Route 47/I-90 interchange started this summer in Huntley, after officials tried for nearly a decade to get the tollway author-

ity to build one. Construction already has drawn two small industries to the area. Boden told residents a Marengo interchange would cost between $55 million and $60 million, with local agencies and the tollway authority splitting costs 5050. The proposed interchange would be McHenry County’s only direct access point to an interstate. Unlike Huntley, Marengo also will meet with about 10 homeowners who live along Route 23 to talk about being annexed into the city limits. If successful, the city would be able to extend its limits to I-90 and present a more convincing argument for an interchange to the tollway authority. “Without this interchange, the likelihood of this development doesn’t exist,” 2nd Ward Alderman Corey Brackmann said.

guilt-free treat with a healthful twist is the inspiration behind Yumz Gourmet Frozen Yogurt, which launched in several suburban locations this fall. Patrons create their own dessert from a changing lineup of frozen yogurt flavors packed with live culture probiotics. It’s a family enterprise for Kevin Visel of St. Charles, who oversees all the ventures in Warrenville, Bolingbrook, South Elgin, Plainfield and soon, in Addison. His father, Daniel Visel, is the main franchise investor, and his sister, Lauren Visel, serves as site developer and manager of the South Elgin and Addison businesses. “The self-serve yogurt concept is definitely a hot trend right now,” Kevin Visel says. “Yumz has a great product (and) a very fun and engaging store atmosphere.” The treats, priced at 42 cents per ounce, begin with a choice of 14 rotating yogurt flavors complemented by a selection of about 70 toppings such as fruits, nuts, sauces and dry tidbits. New yogurt flavors are continually added. “People can create a new masterpiece every time they come in,” he says. The frozen treats are available in four forms: tart — for the purist; regular— which tastes like ice cream; no-sugar-added yogurt for the extra health conscious and sorbet for those who can’t enjoy dairy products. All are fat-free and range between 85 and 100 calories per serving. The sorbet is a new touch thanks to a request from Kevin Visel, whose

daughter has dairy allergies. Sorbet flavors change daily. The Yumz venture is a career change for Visel, who used to own a photography business. “I enjoyed wedding photography, but the reason I decided to switch careers is we found out our third child (was on the way,)” he says. “I knew how stressed summers were with two children. I wanted to be a

dad to my children and a husband to my wife, Kelsey, and to have a little time in my life in the summers. Wedding photography didn’t allow that.” He’s pleased to carry over his favorite element — business management — to the new career. One fan of Yumz is St. Charles resident Caitlin Miller who says her current favorite is combining cool mint and chocolate-flavored yogurts. “It tastes like a Girl Scout Thin Mint,” she says. “(Yumz) is delicious; I go all the time... It’s a fun place to be, and has a young atmosphere.” Through the end of the month, Yumz will donate 10 percent of its sales of cake batter yogurt to DuCap (www.ducap.org,) which helps engage youth to make positive choices. “What they do aligns so closely with my passion,” Kevin Visel says. “They provide programs (about) character building, integrity and taking on responsibility.” — Renee Tomell

Pillowcases brighten kids’ hospital stay This week’s volunteer opportunity: Case for Caring

tal, they find a brightly colored pillowcase selected by a nurse, the foundation’s website explains, noting that nurses have observed the positive emotional impact the simple item can have on a hospitalized child. The pillowcase personalizes their bed during treatment, and they take it home when they leave. The first recipient hospital will be Central DuPage. The goal is to put 100 pillowcases in the storage room at CDH so nurses will have plenty to choose from for their incoming patients.

Thanks to suburban family ties, the Californiabased Calliope Foundation charity recently launched a project to help cheer up children who are being treated for cancer at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. The foundation’s Case for Caring is collecting pillowcases with light-hearted, fun designs. They can be dropped off at Wool and Company, a knitting and crochet shop in St. Charles. “I know so many of you love to sew, so there is a great way you can join Bonnie Kellogg of Fix-a-Stitch; she has wanted to do something for pediatric oncology patients,” Wool and Company owner Lesley Edmondson writes on her website. She says the drive will continue on an ongoing basis, and invites everyone to sew pillowcases for the project or donate purchased ones. Kellogg, a member of Calliope Foundation’s volunteer board of directors, was inspired to create the project by her niece, a registered nurse working in pediatric oncology at Central DuPage Hospital. This month, Edmondson is also collecting handmade scarves for the Heartstrings Scarves project, which will deliver them to girls in treatment facilities

for eating disorders. The program was started by someone who was helped through treatment. “She (knew) how much comfort it would be … to get things that people had made,” says Edmondson, who compares a scarf to comfort from a hug. “We’ve just supported her ever since, and our customers have been amazing. It’s so nice that people are so thoughtful at this time of the year.”

Geneva fifth-grader takes the stage in the Joffrey Ballet’s

‘The Nutcracker’ T

en-year-old Abby Winklepleck’s life has been a little crazy — she’s spent the last five years moving to five different states. Although the states may have changed, one thing has remained the same for Abby no matter where she lived — dancing. Since she was 2, Abby’s been dancing and taking ballet classes. When her family moved to Geneva over the summer, they didn’t know the area and weren’t sure where Abby was going to continue dance lessons. Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet has a good reputation, so Abby’s mother decided summer classes there would be a good place to start. The family eventually decided on Geneva’s State Street Studio for Abby’s classes, but she didn’t stray far from the Joffrey Ballet. When the company posted auditions for this winter’s production of “The Nutcracker,” Abby jumped at the opportunity to try out. And she made the cut. Now, she’s part of the performance that runs until Dec. 27 — marking the 25th anniversary of the company’s production of “The Nutcracker.” It’s a family-friendly holiday tradition that features a full orchestra — not to mention Abby as a Russian doll.

What’s your favorite part about ballet? Well, of course, the dancing part. I also like to meet new people at every dance studio I go to. Those are really the main things I like about dancing.

Do you ever get nervous when performing in front of a large crowd? Um, yeah, but I’m kind of getting used to it because I’ve performed in a couple of Nutcrackers so I’m pretty used to it.

What’s it been like performing in Chicago? It’s a great experience. I get to meet a lot of new people and it’s a great experience. I had my first show (in early December,) and it was amazing. The production is great.

Is this what you want to do with your life? I want to do this for the rest of my life. I have to say dancing is a passion that people keep for a while, and I hope I can do it for a really, really long time.

What’s next for you? I want to do “The Nutcracker” every year with Joffrey. — Allison Horne WHAT Geneva 10-year-old performs in the Joffrey Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” WHERE The Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 E. AUTOMOTIVE AUTO BITS

Costly mistakes Avoiding these common mistakes will help keep your car on the road longer. Oil change intervals matter: According to ConsumerReports.org, “Under normal driving conditions, most vehicles are designed to go 7,500 miles or more between oil changes.” Check your owner’s manual for the recommended interval. My tires look fine: Don’t ignore the air pressure in your tires until they “look like they’re low.” AAA recommends that you check your tire pressure bi-weekly. Check your coolant: The coolant in your radiator keeps the engine cool while it’s running and can keep the engine block from freezing if you live in an extremely cold climate.

Dash cluster Q: I own a 2002 Buick Century with 80,000 miles. The shift indicator and odometer stopped illuminating. I went to the dealer and they said I need to replace the dash cluster at a cost of $500. Is there any other solution? A: We remove and send out the dash clusters to a company that rebuilds them for a third of what GM charges. There may be a local company that also can rebuild the dash.

The ATS is Cadillac’s ‘roads scholar’ T

he new ATS would be a huge shock if we hadn’t already been conditioned by its bigger brother, the CTS. Both of these talented rear-wheeldrive sedans are the result of Cadillac’s having contracted Nurburgring Syndrome. The ‘Ring is that famously complex 12.94mile road-racing course deep in the woods of eastern Germany where manufacturers refine their performance cars. With bumps, hills, 73 corners and straights long enough to let the big dogs run close to 200 mph, the ‘Ring is much more like an ultimate country road than a modern racetrack laid out for TV coverage. Carmakers use the ‘Ring as a field laboratory, a place to see whether the computer simulations are correct. A few years ago, even Cadillac began flogging its development mules around those 73 corners and 13 miles. The first ‘Ring-born Cadillac was the almost-outrageous CTS, which we called the best American-made driver’s car ever. The smaller, lighter, more nimble ATS is better yet. Cadillac offers the ATS in four styles - Luxury, Performance, Premium and standard - with a 202horsepower 4-cylnder engine, a 272-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder or a V6 rated at 321 horsepower. A standard ATS starts at $34,000. Our test car, an all-wheel-drive V-6 Luxury with $3,000 in options atop an already well-

There are three suspension modes - Touring, Sport, Winter - but it’s hard to tell them apart, especially as Cadillac’s Magnetic Ride Control automatically adapts the dampers to new blacktop or old potholes. Dead-stable in a straight line, the ATS can change direction like a cutting horse. The steering is taut and perfectly weighted at any speed. An ATS owner with a season’s pass to the Nurburgring (about $1,800 for unlimited laps on public days) might order the available high-performance Brembo brakes, but the stock anchors are more than powerful enough for normal, even heavy-duty road use.

Dynamically, then, the ATS is a star, an all-around player that could hardly be less like your daddy’s Caddy. (Let’s not even mention the vile, hideous mid-’80s Cimarron, the company’s only previous stab at a small car.) What about refinement and creature comforts? The back seats are a bit tight, but everything else is very nearly outstanding, with only hints of oldschool gaudiness.
