by visiting the Panther website, or going to the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Center. Slow-pitch softball registration will begin in early February, and volleyball registration begins this fall. Practices take place at varying fields and gyms throughout the Bolingbrook community. Fees for the athletes to participate range from $100 to $600, depending on the sport and experience level, with nearly all the proceeds funding the specific team. Meanwhile, traveling and in-house basketball teams are now winding down their respective seasons, participating in various tournaments and games throughout Illinois. Led by coach Jeff Walker, the Panther traveling eighth-grade team is 35-2, with notable victories against high school opponents. Similarly, the fifth- and sixth-grade traveling basketball team is in the waning stages of their season. Head coach Keith Boyd began his involvement with the Panthers two years ago when his daughters started out at the in-house level. “I love being able to give back to my daughters and the rest of the team, teaching them about the game that I am so passionate about,” Boyd said. “The Panther Sports Club gives the girls an opportunity to participate in organized sports from a young age. They will develop a hard work ethic and learn about team work, but at the end of the day, I want to make sure that all the girls in here are having fun.” Boyd’s players are buying in to his philosophy. Bolingbrook resident Alyssa Cazares is in her second year in the Panther program, and her first year with a traveling team. The 12-year-old enjoys the heightened competition, but explains that her favorite aspect of the club is the social experience. “At first, I was nervous to join the traveling team,” she said. “But I have become really good friends with all my teammates, we have so much fun together. I want to be a Panther for as long as possible.” To learn more about the Bolingbrook Panther Sports Club or to sign up for the upcoming softball season, visit www.panthersportsclub.com.
