March 8th marks the day of celebration worldwide in appreciation and respect for women everywhere and their achievements in economic, political and social spheres. The first National Woman’s Day was celebrated in the United States in 1909. In 1975, the UN gave official sanction to International Women’s Day and continues to sponsor its events, which gave widespread popularity to the holiday years after. Created originally in 1910 by the Socialist International as an international day to promote equal rights and equality for all women, it has now become a celebrated holiday observed in countries such as Afghanistan, Laos, Cuba, Uganda, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Madagascar, Montenegro, Vietnam, Mongolia, China, Nepal and many others. The holiday is celebrated as a mixture of Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. In Italy, men offer yellow mimosas to women; and in Russia and Albania, these flowers as well as chocolates are common presents given to mothers, grandmothers and daughters. In Russia, it is also not uncommon for employers to give gifts to female employees in celebration of the holiday. Portugal offers many “women-only” dinners and parties in participation of International Women’s Day. Aside from the celebratory spirit of the holiday, International Women’s Day brings awareness to many issues globally affecting women, young and old. It provides opportunity to bring attention on human rights issues, sexual violence, sex discrimination in the workplace and the struggles of women worldwide. Qs Quotes from Women about Women and the World
A woman with a voice is by definition a strong woman. But the search to find that voice can be remarkably difficult.
Businesswoman, Philanthropist, Co-founder of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
“In too many instances, the march to globalization has also meant the marginalization of women and girls. And that must change.”
First Lady ’93-01, Secretary of State
We cannot close ourselves off to information and ignore the fact that millions of people are out there suffering. I honestly want to help. I don’t believe I feel differently from other people. I think we all want justice and equality, a chance for a life with meaning. All of us would like to believe that if we were in a bad situation someone would help us.”
Director, Actress, Humanitarian
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.

St. Patrick’s Day Indri Padmasana
What do you know about St Patrick’s Day?
“St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17, the saint’s religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century”
Did you know? Since around the ninth or 10th century, people in Ireland have been observing the Roman Catholic feast day of St. Patrick on March 17? Interestingly, however, the first parade held to honor St. Patrick’s Day took place not in Ireland but in the United States. On March 17, 1762, Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City. Along with their music, the parade helped the soldiers reconnect with their Irish roots, as well as with fellow Irishmen serving in the English army.

Jesse Oh set out to start a band after writing his own music for a period of time. By a stroke of luck he met Gabe Yi and Harmony Chun, bass and drums respectively, around the same time at UW Bothell. Though neither had a great amount of experience playing in a band set up, the group’s chemistry was undeniable. The timing was ideal as Seattle was planning to host its first Kollaboration, which became a major milestone for the band and paved the way for their future endeavors. After a period of trial and error, Jesse took a gamble with fellow churchgoer and keyboardist Michael Hong, who was only 15 at the time. When Michael’s potential started to show, the group felt that they needed one more piece to round out the puzzle. They recruited guitarist Fred Kim early in 2011, but he initially declined due to time constraints and conflicts of interest with his other band, Socrates and the Lava Gods. But as summer approached, Fred decided he didn’t have anything better to do and The Melancholics were born. The Melancholics’ sound primarily originates when Jesse fervently approaches the band with an idea and they will rip on it and tear it apart until there’s nothing he likes about it left. Check out more of their music at http://themelancholics.bandcamp.com.
