“The Most Amazing Photos Happen When You Least Expect It” An interview with Phillip
Chester, by Samantha Ucker
How did you find yourself working as a photographer out of Columbus, OH? For the most part, I've lived in Columbus, Ohio my whole life. It was while I was serving in the Army in Afghanistan when I picked up photography. I bought a decent DSLR camera to document this wild lifestyle me and the people of Afghanistan were living. National Geographic came to our small little camp to shoot a documentary film on us titled "Inside The Green Berets" and did not have a photographer in their crew. I quickly showed them the shots I had been taking so far and they loved them, used them in the documentary and all over National Geographic's website to promote the film. That's when I knew what I wanted to do the rest of my life.

How would you describe your photography style? That's one of the more difficult questions to answer. I really like photos that have that feeling of reality to them. I'm not huge into setting up elaborate shots as I think the most amazing photos happens when you least expect it. Documentary/Lifestyle if you had to put a category on it. I'm nowhere near where I want to be creative/skill wise, but I feel I'm at least headed in the right direction.
What subject matter do you love to shoot?
People. Without a doubt. It’s the easiest to connect to and I feel carries the most emotion.
Where in the world do you dream of traveling and working? My dream and goal in life is to travel for work. Some people think work is the last thing they'd want to do while traveling or exploring a new country, but for me it’s what makes me the most happy. Places of the top of my head I would love to shoot at would be Iceland, Tokyo, New Zealand, South Africa, Russia, and Spain. Millions more of course, but those are high on my priority list.
What do you want people to know about you personally? Um, I'm not sure how to answer that. I'm an extremely easy going fellow, super picky movie watcher, very sarcastic dry sense of humor, I love a good steak, bikes and scooters are my favorite method of travel, I've been playing guitar for 14 years and haven't gotten any better, I love good company, and cats.
How can we see more of your work? My work is currently only available on my two websites. One which is dedicated to my wedding/engagement work... www.PhilChester.com and my "everything else work" site which is www.PhillipChester.com
