Coty Farquhar

Welcome everyone to the 20th issue of Styling magazine, and the first of 2015! January is about change, new beginnings and aspirations for a better life. There is no better time to claim the life you want and realise your dreams than in the beginning of a new year. The last three months I quite literally disappeared from my normal life. As a friend asked me last week on the phone, Coty, where have you been, did you fall off the planet? Well, to explain s i m p ly … a f t e r l a s t ye a r ’s massive studio move, loosing my Mother and trying to stay focused on all the things in life that are important to us as a mother, as a wive and as a working woman, I just needed to listen to my heart a little more closely than normal. Where it took me, I would never have guessed in a million years. I am now a monthly contributor to Gai’s Gazette, a magazine created by renowned Australian thoroughbred horse trainer and businesswoman Gai Waterhouse. And, I also have a lovely new studio space to create Styling magazine, right in the centre of the Gibraltar Hotel Bowral. It is set on an 18-hole golf course surrounded by beautiful nature and...only five minutes drive from my home. Every week in the hotel there are gorgeous weddings and corporate events held in the ballroom, and hundreds of guests arriving from afar coming to stay, dine and explore the Southern Highlands. It is like I have stepped into another world. My clients, John and his wife Liz and I started talking four months ago about all the creative things that can be done in a large hotel...and we haven’t stopped talking yet. We have exciting plans for the next twelve months and beyond, and

I have already started creating exclusive designed weddings and events for the hotel. We have much to do to prepare and style the new look and the most wonderful part about this new role of mine, is, that it fits so perfectly with Styling magazine. As I create, I can share the stories from the inside of the hotel such as the weddings, the food styling, decorations and flower styling, the people that work here and the exciting events of the future. Just this week, a wall of bricks were removed from my studio and a new large window was built to showcase the studio showroom, which features beautiful wedding displays. Please come in and visit next time you’re in town. It’s just perfect…and I have a suspicious feeling that my Mother had something to do with the planning of all this from above! The new motto for Styling Magazine for 2015 is “Create from the Heart” Listen to that voice inside that says there is more to life. Take risks, create with confidence and know that if a wonderful idea comes to you, it’s because you can do it, just have trust in your heart. As Maya Angelou said, “The heart is the only thing we can trust” This very colourful issue is a sort of scrapbook of mine, filled with wonderful inspiration. I think it is a good idea to start off every year with a vision board, a board with images that help you claim the life you want and realise your visions. I have filled this magazine with inspiring artist’s work, jewellery designers, graphic designers, illustrators and also, scientists who explore our unseen world. Each in their own way and style these artists think outside the square, and what better way to start off a new year. I wish you all a wonderful and creative 2015, and may it be filled with an abundance of al good things and may all your secret wishes come true! Xx Coty Farquhar

Mixing Colours E-CORPUS

Traité des couleurs servant à la peinture à l’eau

Over three hundred years ago in 1692, an 800-page book Traité des couleurs servant à la peinture à l’eau was written in Dutch about mixing watercolours. The book describes the use of colour, hues and tones in painting. It’s quite extraordinary that this amazing hand written and hand painted detailed book has survived all this time. We here at Styling Magazine honour the man, the author, known only as A.Boogert who produced this comprehensive guide to paint and colour. There was only a single copy ever produced and seen by very few. We have picked some colorful palettes from his book and have added them along side our scrapbook style layout showcasing some of the works of our favourite artists featured in our previous issues.

Styling is a reflection of our personality – our tastes, our power of observation, our own cultural upbringing and our talent for originality. Creativity is a fundamental human compulsion to invent or to compose. Take time each week to create your own ideas, however humble you may think they are. Look closely at the details in everything and notice the colours, the shapes and the deep inner feelings you have when you are attracted to something. Creative expression comes from the many objects we have around us in our lives, a bowl of flowers, a favourite teapot on a lovely table, a painting or a garden on a misty day. Creativity is inspired by the wonders of our universe. When you are in the right state of heart and soul, just like magic you can tap into the endless flow of universal creative energy and resources and inspiration comes straight to you. - Coty Farquhar

Views to Mt Gibraltar Styling Magazine has a new studio and showroom, right in the centre of Gibraltar Hotel in Bowral. It’s big, very busy and filled with an energy like no other. With breathtaking views to Mt Gibraltar across an 18 hole golf course, it is the perfect backdrop for photographic shoots. I have started to design weddings & events for the hotel and we now have a beautiful new showroom right in the heart of the hotel, there will be a little something for everyone’s taste. I so look forward to sharing everything with you in the new year, especially the behind-the-scenes styling and decorations and all the interesting things that happen each day. Yes, it is a unique combination... a stylist, a magazine and a hotel, but it works! I have much to prepare in the coming months and many new things to design, I can’t wait to see what wonderful things happen in this amazing place in this new year. Do drop by next time you’re in the Southern Highlands and come and say hello and see this beautiful view.
