Dearest Readers and Friends, Welcome to the 24th issue of Styling, or as we like to call it, our Twenty Fourth Book! Three years ago, at home alone, I launched Styling Magazine. Thousands of hours later, here I am, and about to change the way I do things yet again. I do have one of the best jobs in the world! I live and work in the country and each day I tap into the lives of creative people all over the world. I will share a secret of mine; I planned all of this a very long time ago when I was a young girl working at Vogue. I had always dreamed of running my own magazine, and I was taught at a very young age to have faith and to always believe in yourself. I wanted to bring this dream of mine to life, so I set out to manifest it. But I couldn’t find anyone to help me, so I just did it myself! Crazy? yes, definitely! And, this is the secret to my life’s happiness. Some of you may remember my letter from one of my first issues, I talked about comparing the planting of a garden to the building of Styling Magazine. Well, I am thrilled to say that the foundations have now settled deep into the earth and my ‘magazine garden” is now well established. It has been visited by hundreds of thousands of readers around the world and this magazine has grown into a lovely garden.   An important part of working in the creative industry is to push the boundaries and to keep moving forward. My life has changed so much since I started sharing my work online. I was one of the first Australian bloggers and one of the first to launch an online magazine. It was at a time when nobody knew what a blog was. Now, there are millions of blogs and magazines. We live in a world where we crave information, inspiration and imagery. We are linked together more than ever before. Our awareness has grown and our minds have expanded. However, I think their needs to be a resting place or point for everyone to jump off to now and then, just to stop and replenish our bodies, slow down our mind and to remember who we are! And, I need this place right now! Our new motto for 2016 is “Gentleness” We have come so far in such a

short time through the internet, and I think many of us (who were born in the last century) still have one foot in the old world and one in the new. So, to move forth in this ever changing world, I plan to try some new things with Styling this year! So stay tuned, you will be the first to know. Now, most importantly about this new issue, an issue dedicated to water, beautiful water; it is what keeps us all alive and I believe it is the most valuable thing on the planet, without it, we are nothing! When I started to think about water, there was only one person that came to mind, and that is Ernst Haeckel, German biologist, naturalist, philosopher and artist extraordinaire! I dedicate this issue of ‘Water’ to him and to his incredible illustrations of art forms with nature. We’re off to the Caribbean Islands to Cuba through the lens of one of our favourite artists, photographer Adrián Villeta, who shares with us his beautiful fashion shoot. Food stylist, Sonali Ghosh has plucked her ingredients straight from the sea and created amazing dishes, and we have blended it with the natural curiosities of the sea world. We give you a little sneak peek into the new book ‘Patina Farm’ the wonderfully creative home of Brooke & Steve Giannetti. And, as always, because there is so much beauty in the world…we have filled pages with inspirational people, amazing stylists, creative artists, beautiful homes and gardens, flowers, decorations, books and more. Wishing you a wonderful creative year ahead, may you find the time to laugh, to pray, to celebrate and create. I hope that you are surrounded by all those you love and those that love you. After-all, they are the ones that help you to grow. Inspiration for our cover came from this beautiful image of the ice flower and when the temperature drops, the flower freezes and petals turn to ice.

The

Rain Dance

Come along and join us in a rain dance for the beginning of the year as we celebrate water in all its glory. Let’s tap, swing and dance to the beat of drums. Let the water flow and wash away the old to bring all the new creative energ y for the year ahead.

One little drop of water is all you need to create! The most magical and creative material on our planet. Over the centuries artists, writers and poets have been inspired by water... Great lakes flowing, calm waters, oceans, wild seas, clear crystal ponds, rainy days and cloudy skies. Stand in a pool of water and notice what you see. Movement, reflection and a myriad of colours. There is not a single droplet of water that is the same as the next! Each droplet is unique, as unique as each of us!

“Art is a language of emotion arising from personal experience” says portrait photographer Adrián Villeta, who recently travelled to Cuba with his creative team to photograph for the fashion House, ‘Of Atelier’, Puerto Rico. Adrian’s images captures model, Teresita Vincente in a place lost in time, still untouched with amazing architectural and beautiful old crumbling mansions built when Cuba had tremendous wealth in the 1950’s. Adrián’s concept was to contrast the faded and crumbled beauty of the surroundings with this young beautiful woman, almost as if a ghost from the old days of Havana had returned to the city as it is now. It’s magical, mystical, beautiful and exotic...Cuba is a place of extremes.

As we kick off the new year with our new motto “Be Gentle with the World” we couldn’t think of a more suitable creative and dynamic couple that both live and breathe from the heartbeat of gentleness. Decorator, Brooke Giannetti and her husband, renowned architect Steve Giannetti, are about to release their second book, ‘Patina Farm’. Many of us dream of building the perfect home in the country, Brooke and Steve have actually done it! And, they have done it so beautifully!

Gentle Living Brooke & Steve Giannetti

Photog raphed by Lisa Romerein

Many of us have followed along with the design and building of Patina Farm through Brooke Giannetti’s blog, Velvet & Linen. A couple of years ago, Brooke shared online the very first sketches of Steve’s designs of Patina Farm. Wow! What a place they were going to build! We got to see everything along the way, as Brooke took us through the entire process of the design and of the build. In just a few years they have created an amazing established garden that surrounds a very beautiful hand made home. Patina farm was built from scratch, incorporating wonderful architectural and decorative elements gathered on a trip to Europe. The farm sits in California’s Ojai Valley surrounded by mountainous countryside. The interior of the home features beautiful artisan pieces, modern luxuries and an incredible collection of European hand-made furniture. I have chosen “just a few” of my favourite images & pages from the book.

The Patina Farm book is both inspiring and wonderfully informative. You will feel like you’re right there in their home as you turn the pages. You can almost hear the water droplets on the fountain, and the call from the little donkeys off in the distance. This book takes you straight to a place of peace and calmness. You will be inspired by the design of their fabulous kitchen, which by-theway was perfectly positioned in the house to look out onto an incredible old oak tree. All the rooms in the house open cleverly to the outside. Every architectural element and detail was preplanned and brought into place carefully. Instead of fabricating new cabinetry, they used antique cupboards for storage and beautiful aged doors throughout. It has taken many thousands of hours of work for Brooke and Steve to create this gentle home. It is the perfect blend of Brooke’s unique decorative style and Steve’s creative designs that makes this home truly special. Thank goodness we have all been able to be a part of their wonderful journey. This is a gorgeous book!

“We believe in homes with emotion, the power of natural light, in a modern sense of space, in a simple palette of materials and the power of antiques to convey history, that classical proportions hold the key to beauty and that a little romance is a good thing Brooke & Steve Giannetti

HADO M e s s a g e s f r o m Wa t e r

“Hado creates words...words are the vibrations of nature. Therefore beautiful words create beautiful nature. Ugly words create ugly nature. This is the root of the universe. - Dr Masaru Emoto

DR MASARU EMOTO 1943 – 2014

Dr Masaru Emote was born in Yokohama, Japan on July 22nd, 1943 and only recently died in October, 2014. He was a graduate of t h e Yo k o h a m a M u n i c i p a l U n i v e r s i t y ' s department of humanities and sciences, with a focus on International Relations. In 1986, he established the IHM Corporation in Tokyo. In October of 1992, he received certification from the Open International University as a Doctor of Alternative Medicine. Subsequently he was introduced to the concept of micro cluster water in the US and Magnetic Resonance Analysis technolog y. The quest thus began to discover the mystery of water. He undertook extensive research of water around the planet, not so much as a scientific researcher, but more from the perspective of an original thinker. At length, he realized that it was in the frozen crystal form, that water showed us its true nature.

It was 1994 when the idea to freeze water and observe it with microscope came upon me. With this method, I was convinced that I should be able to see something like snow crystals. After two months of trial and error, this idea bore fruit. The beautifully shining hexagonal crystals were created from the invisible world. My staff at the laboratory and I were absorbed in it and began to do many researches. At first, we strenuously observed crystals of tap water, river water, and lake water. From the tap water we could not get any beautiful crystals. We could not get any beautiful ones from rivers and lakes near big cities, either. However, from the water from rivers and lakes where water is kept pristine from development, we could observe beautiful crystals with each one having its own uniqueness. The observation was done in various ways: Observe the crystal of frozen water after showing: Letters to water Showing pictures to water Playing music to water Praying to water In all of these experiments, distilled water for hospital usage produced by the same company was

used. Since it is distilled twice, it can be said that it is pure water. The result was that we always observed beautiful crystals after giving good words, playing good music, and showing, playing, or offering pure prayer to water. On the other hand, we observed disfigured crystals in the opposite situation. Moreover, we never observed identical crystals This world is filled with wonders and mysteries that get more incomprehensible if we try to think of a reason. In a familiar situation, for example, why do dogs exist and why do cats exist? Why do mice exist and why do snakes exist? Why are there cherry blossom trees and why are there willow trees? What is a human being in the first place? As such, there are so many incomprehensible things that we cannot understand at all. Thus, except for some of truly basic things, no one disagrees that there are still so many unknowns. Probably we understand 3%. in other words, I think 97% is unknown. The reason why the number is 3% is that the research of geneticists revealed the level of our DNA activation is 3%. I believe the original idea of creation by the creator of this universe was “the pursuit of beauty. Everything is combination of energetic vibration.

As vibration resonates, it makes some tangible objects. Combination of non-resonating vibration can result in destructive energy, and nothing can be created out of it. When some vibration and the other resonate each other, it always creates beautiful design. Thus, most of the Earth is covered with beautiful nature. That is why scientists, philosophers, and religionists pursue for unknown facts. Is it presumptuous to suggest them taking paths with “the pursuit of beauty” in mind as a means to confirm their right paths? There are approximately 7 billion people exist on this Earth now. I think there is one common standard we share although our skin colors, languages, religious beliefs may be different. I think that is the standard of “beauty”. However, the deep pursuit of beauty is slightly different depending on experience, age, and personality. That is why many types of wonderful artists who pursue the secrets of beauty always appear in the human history one after another. Therefore, the photograph of crystals is neither science nor religion. I hope it is enjoyed as a new type of art. Nevertheless, the world it shows is truth, and there is no doubt that many messages essential to our lives are hidden in it. - Masaru Emoto

His last words were "Arigato". ("Thank you" in Japanese). Which in Japanese means to be grateful for our own existence. His family believes he was giving his thanks to all of the people who shared his vision for peace, the people he met along his journey, and everyone who came into contact with his life's work. He was sincerely grateful for his family and every friend he had made throughout his life. He loved and thanked you all so very much. In his last book, ‘Hidden Messages From Water and The Universe’, he wrote, "Life is love a gift from God and parent, and death is gratitude for a new dimension". So now he is in another dimension, looking over us warmly with love and gratitude.

W hen a place attr acts this much attention from film directors, artists, stylists, actors and the creative industr y as a whole, we knew we needed to have a closer look. Well, we ag ree, t h e r e r e a l ly i s s o m e t h i n g ve r y special happening at James Perkins’ p l a c e , A y n h o e P a r k ! A c t u a l l y, wonderful things happen there ever y day. It has become the Mecca of weddings, parties & fantastic creative fashion & film shoots. It is a stylists dream house! So, we asked Thomas Farquhar to drop by whilst he was in Oxfordshire recently to investigate, and his response was...it’s absolutely fffffffabulous!

A ynhoe Park was originally built in 1615, but it has been rebuilt, remodeled and embellished many times since then, as time, tragedy and the imagination of its owners changed its face across the centur ies. Thirteen years ago, James Pe r k i n s b o u g h t Ay n h o e Park, in the years that followed; James undertook the monumental challenge of restoring Aynhoe. James Perkins is a restorer of historic houses, a musicindustry veteran, a collector and an aesthete. In the beginning, Aynhoe Park was supposed to be just one of his restoration projects – A chance to return a c l a s s i c G e o rg i a n c o u n t r y house to its full glory before moving onto his next challenge‌he has never left. In the 1990’s, James was well known as the founder and driving force behind danceparty powerhouse Fantazia.

He brings his love of spectacle and talent for entertaining to the ethos of Aynhoe today. That’s why events at Aynhoe Park are among the most memorable in the country. A n av i d c o l l e c t o r o f t h e historic, the unusual and the beautiful since he was very y o u n g , Ja m e s h a s t u r n e d Aynhoe Park into a repository of stories told in objects and artworks. Aynhoe Park is now the passion project and family home of James and his partner Sophie – They are only too happy to share it with discerning guests and those with something to celebrate. Together, they have both restored it to the grandeur of yesteryear and created a mesmerizing environment with an extraordinary 21 st century personality.

We have fallen head-over-heels for this place, it is a Mecca of a location for all things creative. The Orangery as seen here, is a gallery of classical sculpture swiped from a museum and given an inimitable Aynhoe makeover. The Orangery is whatever you make it and it has been used for fashion shoots, films, parties and weddings. There is also a hire department filled with one-of-a-kind art and whimsical items to add to your setting. It is a fantastic location for filming and shooting, and a perfect setting for weddings, corporate functions and private events...and only 50 minutes drive from London, it is a place for magical place for all kinds of parties for both young and old and a perfect place to stay with 28 bedroom suites. They have just recently renovated the East Wing adding an an additional 12 bedrooms. Up and coming events at Aynhoe Park includes the Formula 1 at Silverstone, the ‘Wilderness Music Festival’ , and, if cricket is your thing, Aynhoe Park is hosting the annual local cricket match, what a fun day that would be. Happy 70th Birthday Fifi O’Neill

Stylist - Fifi O’Neill

As a popular website stated recently, “STYLING is in the spotlight right now. Once, it was a somewhat a mysterious profession. FR I D A K A H L O was not only an iconic artist, she was also a bold beauty and an avant-garde fashionista whose timeless sense of style continues to inspire and influence the worlds of fashion, media, and art today. Fashion is an optical effect that Frida employed with shrewd artistic intention. Frida knew that life is theater, and fashion was her costume. Frida understood the importance of image and attitude, no matter who you are. The canvas was Frida’s mirror, and she was the painter, the model, and the painting—author, subject, medium, and object. Frida was her own best work of art. Whether she was in Mexico City, New York, or Paris, Frida Kahlo’s unique multicultural aesthetic mélange created an exciting and matchless style that made her the center of attention wherever she went. The impact of Frida’s fashion fusion still generates an infectious attraction the world over. International fashion magazines feature editorials that clearly display Frida’s influence; fashion

designers, photographers, and models continue to channel her indomitable spirit; filmmakers, songwriters, and artists of all kinds create new works that reflect her singular aesthetic.Fashion as the Art of Being is a vibrant tribute to Frida Kahlo’s bold character, style, and art, a fascinating journey reflecting the kaleidoscopic ways Frida’s unique story and personality have been interpreted and adapted as few others in our time. The House of Thurn und Taxis Contribution by Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, Sir John Richardson, Martin Mosebach and Jeff Koons, Photographed by Todd Eberle Adventure through the princely T h u r n u n d Ta x i s e s t at e , a n enchanted palace where 1,000 years of history meets a thoroughly modern family. For 200 years the Thurn und Taxis family have called the palace of St. Emmeram home. Regarded as one of Germany’s finest examples of historicist architecture, the Regensburg residence’s myriad rooms trace centuries of distinctive styles: a Romanesque-Gothic cloister built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, a neo-Renaissance marble staircase, a number of Rococo and neo-Rococo staterooms, and a Baroque library frescoed in 1737. Celebrated photographer Todd Eberle captures the confluence of high art and grand architecture within the 500-room palace to reveal the curious tale of the Thurn und Taxis family. Complete with stately portraits and scenes of life at St. Emmeram, this monograph offers a glimpse into the world and glamour of one of the most important dynasties of the European aristocracy. - RIZZOLI

THE BOOK OF FINE LINEN - A visual tribute to the elegant world of heirloom household fabrics, from the white linen cloth of ancient Egypt to the rainbow-hued coverlets of today. This lively text introduces heirloom household fabrics, their use, manufacture, embellishments, and care, as well as the infinite variety of fibers and materials used. The author explains how they serve as both unusually revealing testaments of the history of daily life and quintessential examples of the weaver’s craft, often so magnificently decorated that they rival works of art. The text is supplemented by a rich array of paintings, archival photographs, vintage advertisements, and original commissioned photography from collections, private homes, and workshops of the leading contemporary manufacturers. A comprehensive glossary of technical terms, bibliography, and index complete the book. - RIZZOLI

D e b or ah , D u ch e s s of D evon s h i r e : The Last of the Mitford Sisters A remarkable woman of our time, Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire (1920-2014) led a life as extraordinary as that of her siblings, the legendary Mitford sisters. The Duchess was a woman of elegant t a s t e a n d s e n s i b i l i t y. T h e wonderful objects with which she lived illustrate so much of her story, from exquisite jewels gifted by her husband to a rare copy of Brideshead Revisited personally inscribed by her friend Evelyn Waugh; all tell of a life well-lived. Painted by Freud and photographed by Weber, Testino, Beaton and Parkinson, it is the contents of her final home, The Old Vicarage at Edensor on the Chatsworth estate, which perhaps paint the most vivid final portrait. This historic auction will offer fine and decorative art, jewels and the Duchess of Devonshire’s library.

Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire: The Last of the Mitford Sisters will be on view at Sotheby’s London from 27 February–1st March, 2016 Auction: 2nd March, 2016

Styling is a reflection of our personality – our tastes, our power of observation, our own cultural upbringing and our talent for originality. Creativity is a fundamental human compulsion to invent or to compose. Take time each week to create your own ideas, however humble you may think they are. Look closely at the details in everything and notice the colours, the shapes and the deep inner feelings you have when you are attracted to something. Creative expression comes from the many objects we have around us in our lives, a bowl of flowers, a favourite teapot on a lovely table, a painting or a garden on a misty day. Creativity is inspired by the wonders of our universe. When you are in the right state of heart and soul, just like magic you can tap into the endless flow of universal creative energy and resources and inspiration comes straight to you. - Coty Farquhar
