Fall in Love with Farmers

Markets By Hannah Filiatreau

28

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

OUT & ABOUT

“when winter approaches, you couldn’t ask for a better chance to spend time with family or friends, all the while strolling between colorful local vendors.”

Seasonal lattes and knit sweaters are the dreams of northerners as the winter months encroach on fall. Down South however, where the sun continues to glare down around 77 degrees, Florida has its own version of winter. The decline in daytime temperature is enough to withstand being outdoors long enough to enjoy some of the best goods Floridians have to offer.

For the health conscious eater farmers markets are often the safest as well. Hormones, pesticides, antibiotics, and genetic modification are just a few common concerns present in most large scale products. By purchasing food directly from the grower, you know exactly where it comes from and can ask questions you would otherwise never be able to.

In Florida, farmers markets run year round, but standing outside in the blistering summer heat isn’t a favorite pastime. So when winter approaches, you couldn’t ask for a better chance to spend time with family or friends, all the while strolling between colorful local vendors. Customers can find recently plucked produce and plants, fresh baked goods, and hand crafts.

Small-scale farmers are not only open to communication, but they rarely have anything to hide. They are some of the most passionate people who pride themselves in sharing their sustainable techniques and ethics. Farmers who speak directly to their customers best know their preferences and what they can do to meet them. By knowing their own products so well, they can even offer tips, techniques and recipes for the best outcome.

Most markets run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., typically from October to May. A few in the Tampa area include the Seminole Heights Sunday Market at Hillsborough High School, North Tampa Market at the Carollwood Cultural Center in Tampa, Corey Avenue Sunday Market at St. Pete Beach, and Fresh Market at Hyde Park Village. These locations hold from 60 to 125 vendors for attendees to peruse. Although artisan soaps and housewares are charming, most who attend farmers markets are looking for their seasonal crop favorites. Some produce to be on the lookout for in the upcoming months include avocados, bell peppers, eggplant, guavas, mushrooms, radishes, snap beans and squash. Some growers even offer a variety of goods the likes you may not have the knowledge of or option to buy in a grocery store, such as carambola or starfruit. Farmers markets offer the freshest local fruits, vegetables and herbs, all for the most affordable prices. Buying locally is your chance to step away from large-scale agribusinesses and give back to family farmers. In the competitive food marketplace, buying local puts 100 percent back into the growers pocket. This means you can also request specific goods that they may not otherwise provide. Local owners are often happy to accommodate regular customers and grow their product selection.

For buyers concerned about the humane treatment of animals, small-scale farmers have the ability and means to take care of their animals in the most natural way possible. They can provide green grass, free or enclosed roaming areas, and the most natural diets possible. Some farmers also mix and season their own meat, and can tell you all of the steps their product went through. This assures that the best cared for and quality meat is making it onto your plate. Buyers can also feel good about the practices used in transporting local goods. Growers transporting their own products drastically cuts down gas usage and wasteful packaging. Large-scale products typically travel an average of 1500 miles to get to your dinner plate. By purchasing locally, you can help diminish the use of natural resources and the contribution to pollution. If you’re looking for a feel-good way to enjoy the outdoors while supporting local businesses and their families, the farmers market is for you. Casually shop with friends or family, and enjoy a made to order lunch or drink from local food trucks and vendors. Anyone interested can visit Tampabaymarkets.com to see a list of the best markets in the surrounding area, or for a comprehensive shoppers guide to help you better search and understand listed vendors products.

BEACHFRONT LUXURY GETS A WHOLE NEW MEANING Zota Beach Resort

By Riesa Pascal

34

| STYLETOME.COM

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

Despite having grown up just two hours away from Sarasota, somehow I had never had the pleasure of exploring Florida’s Cultural Coast and all the little treasures it holds within such as the charming town of Longboat Key. Not only is Longboat Key a gateway to miles of beaches with fine sand and shallow waters, it is also home to the area’s newest luxury beachfront resort, Zota Beach Resort. I delighted at the opportunity to explore this pristine property and its surrounding attractions during my long-overdue first trip to Sarasota. Over the course of my weekend stay I learned very quickly that Zota Beach Resort is truly a local gem that it is making waves across the city and proving it’s here to stay. After a scenic drive through Florida’s West Coast, my companion and I arrived at the opulent property and immediately stepped into an atmosphere that invited us to sit back, relax and enjoy ourselves. Needless to say, we were more than excited for our stay and checking out our room was at the top of the list! Zota Beach Resort’s stylish guest rooms and suites were outfitted with all the necessities required for a comfortable stay, as well as various in-room luxuries. From plush beds and flat-screen TVs to refrigerators and coffee makers, our accommodations set an impressive tone for the weekend and continuously reflected the laid back elegance of the property. Our spacious suite featured a balcony overlooking the crystal blue waters and a breathtakingly beautiful sunset at dawn. In spite of our first-rate accommodations, our growing appetite forced us to tear ourselves away from the exceptional views in search of lunch. In no time we had pulled up a seat at Viento Kitchen + Bar, Zota Beach Resort’s trendy restaurant and wine bar. An open-air lounge overlooking the pristine pool deck was the perfect spot to enjoy an enticing lunch of calamari fritto, roasted garlic hummus, zota salad and a mouthwatering blackened Luau Grouper sandwich. Led by Executive Chef Jason Pellett, Viento Kitchen + Bar’s innovative menu and extensive

wine list was an excellent start to what would go on to be an unforgettable weekend. A stroll through Marie Selby Botanical Gardens seemed like the perfect way to work off our hefty meal so my companion and I hit the road and headed to beautiful Sarasota Bay to explore the 15 acre tropical, urban oasis. Unparalleled horticulture displays allowed us to relax amidst nature’s beauty as we were carried away by botanical bliss. One would think the walk was enough exercise for the day, but we were only just getting started! After heading back to Zota Beach Resort, we donned our gym attire and hit their 24/7 fitness center to get our hearts pumping. The facility was outfitted with a variety of high-tech cardiovascular machines with built-in TVs, strength training equipment, room for stretching, towels, water, and even spare earbuds for us forgetful travelers! The third floor placement of the facility also meant I had incredible views of the Gulf of Mexico to keep me motivated during my workout and keep me motivated it did! I added two extra miles to my usual treadmill routine and felt like could’ve ran till sunrise, but dinner reservations at Shore restaurant meant otherwise. Shore is Sarasota’s expression of a mid-century, al-fresco coastal eatery. The venue was awarded OpenTable’s Top 100 Hot Spots in the U.S. for 2017 and it wasn’t difficult to see—and taste—why. The oceanside diner featured an assortment of creative recipes combined with local favorites, all served in an open air dining space. My companion kicked off the meal with an appetizer of spiced whole roasted cauliflower served with goat cheese, shishito purée, zante currants and hazelnut pesto. I opted for Kung Pao calamari served with napa cabbage, red pepper, and toasted peanuts. My main course came in the form of free range fried chicken served with mac ‘n’ cheese, coleslaw, and crystal hot sauce honey. I assure you every bite was just as delectable as it sounds! With full appetites and a busy day ahead of us, we headed back to Zota Beach Resort to enjoy a night of peaceful sleep and stress-free relaxation. STYLETOME.COM |

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

After fueling up with a piping hot breakfast at Viento Kitchen + Bar, my companion and I set off on a mission to explore some of Sarasota’s finest attractions. Unbeknownst to me (a die-hard Seminoles fan), Florida State University is the steward of the state art museum of Florida and one of Sarasota’s most notable cultural institutes, The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Also known as the The Ringling, our first stop on the property was a tour of Ca’ d’Zan, the home of the circus king and his wife which still stands regal on the grounds. Walking around the dazzling mansion felt like entering a time capsule that perfectly captured the splendor of the roaring 20s and the romance of the Italy the Ringlings so loved. Steps away from Ca’ d’Zan was the Ringling Circus Museum where we explored parade wagons, posters, stage props, glittering costumes, and even the cannon that shot daring performers through the air to delight packed houses in great cities and small towns across America. Our next adventure took place just a few minutes away at Mote Aquarium where guests can get an up-close experience with a variety of marine animals and fish, including two touch tanks and a 135,000 gallon shark habitat. More than 100 species of marine life call Mote their home and we even have the opportunity to witness scientific research—as it happens—in viewable working laboratories. Upon returning from our excursions, my companion and I kicked back in luxurious poolside cabanas and enjoyed a savory lunch and handcrafted cocktails from Cascades Pool Bar. Between refreshing dips in the resort’s sparkling infinity-edge pool and stretching out on the sun-drenched pool deck, I wasn’t sure if we would ever make it to the beach, but we were on one of the most sought-after Gulf-front destinations in the country so beach time was a must! Eventually we ventured across the sugary soft, white sand in front of the resort and entered the Gulf of Mexico to watch the bittersweet sunset of our final day. After returning to the property—

36

and taking a quick dip in the hot tub—we headed to Viento Kitchen + Bar for an exquisite farewell dinner of “Floribbean” cuisine influenced by Florida, Caribbean, and Mediterranean cooking techniques and flavors. I didn’t think I would fall in love with Sarasota on my very first trip, but it more than easy to do with Zota Beach Resort in the mix. In just two days at the property, I left with a deeper understanding of why visitors from across the globe are heading to Longboat Key and booking accommodations with this elegant property. Zota Beach Resort offers guests a secluded Gulffront getaway that is only minutes away from Sarasota and Bradenton’s world-class attractions, but don’t be surprised when you find it hard to leave your accommodations! Delicious dining options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Viento Kitchen + Bar mean you may be perfectly content to spend your entire vacation sipping cocktails by the infinity-edge outdoor pool as Zota Beach Resort’s stellar attendants and speedy poolside service takes care of your every need. From stylish evenings at their chic wine bar to splashing in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, I assure you that nothing but relaxation awaits you at Zota Beach Resort. Reserve your stay today to discover Longboat Key’s premiere retreat and experience beachfront luxury like no other.

FERRARI PORTOFINO

| STYLETOME.COM

TOYS

The Ferrari Portofino is the new V8 GT set to dominate its segment thanks to a perfect combination of sportiness, elegance and on board comfort. Ferrari has chosen a particularly evocative moniker for this exceptionally versatile drop-top car, referencing one of Italy’s most beautiful towns. Portofino is renowned for its charming tourist port and, over the years, has become internationally synonymous with elegance, sportiness and understated luxury. The launch colour of the new Ferrari has also been dedicated to this marvellous town: Rosso Portofino. Capable of unleashing a massive 600 cv and sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, the Ferrari Portofino is the most powerful convertible to combine the advantages of a retractable hard top, a roomy boot and generous cockpit space plus two rear seats suitable for short trips. The Ferrari Portofino’s all-new chassis features a significant weight saving over the California T it replaces. Thanks to the extensive use of modern production technologies, all the chassis and body-in-white components have been redesigned with a consequent reduction in weight despite an increase in torsional rigidity.

Engine The renowned Ferrari V8 turbo, part of the engine family that was nominated International Engine of the Year in both 2016 and 2017, now punches out 40 cv more than the California T’s power unit thanks to the adoption of new components and specific calibration of the engine management software. The characteristic Ferrari V8 soundtrack has also been further enhanced and can be fully appreciated, particularly in top-down driving. All aspects of the 8-cylinder’s efficiency have been honed with the adoption of new pistons and con-rods, and a new intake system design. The geometries throughout the exhaust system have also been revolutionised. The new one-piece-cast exhaust header reduces losses, an important factor in ensuring Ferrari’s characteristic throttle response with zero turbo lag. These improvements, combined with the Variable Boost Management which adjusts torque delivery to suit the gear selected, enable the Ferrari Portofino to offer even higher levels of acceleration in all gears and lower fuel consumption compared to the outgoing model. engine: 3.9 liter V8 aspiration: twin turbochargers torque: 561 ft-lb at 3,000 rpm power: 591 hp at 7,500 rpm 0-62 mph: 3.5 seconds top speed: 199 mph

Vehicle dynamics The Ferrari Portofino’s vehicle dynamic characteristics have been completely revised and benefit from the introduction of new technological solutions. For the first time on

this type of Ferrari model, the third generation electronic rear differential (E-Diff3) has been adopted and integrated with the F1-Trac, improving both mechanical grip and the control of the car on the limit. The Ferrari Portofino is also the first GT in the range to be fitted with EPS (Electric Power Steering). This allowed the engineers to reduce the steering ratio by seven per cent for even more responsive steering without a trade-off in stability thanks to the integration with the E-Diff3. The magnetorheological damping system (SCM-E) has been uprated with dual-coil technology which helps reduce roll while simultaneously improving absorption of road surface unevenness. The result is an even more dynamic, responsive car that also delivers superior ride comfort.

Design & Aerodynamics The Ferrari Design Centre-penned Ferrari Portofino is an aggressively-styled car with a two-box fastback configuration – unprecedented in a coupé-convertible with a retractable hard top – that adds extra sleekness to its silhouette, lending it a sportier character without impinging on its elegance and dynamism. Close collaboration between the Aerodynamics department and Ferrari Design has ensured maximum efficiency in the development of the surface treatment. Starting with the front, the form of the large radiator grille opening, that stretches from edge to edge of the carefully contoured nose, is underscored by a new fullLED headlight assembly with a more horizontal shape. The outside edge of the headlight hides an innovative air intake which vents into the front wheelarch and exits along the flank to reduce drag. The tail design underlines the car’s sporty stance which has been further enhanced by placing the tail lights futher apart. This elegant solution cleverly conceals the rear volume housing the all-new RHT which features a more lightweight design and can be raised or lowered at low speeds.

Comfort on board There was also a particular focus on board comfort which is guaranteed by a slew of new features, not least an infotainment system with 10.2” touchscreen display, a new airconditioning system that improves occupant comfort both with the top up or down, a new steering wheel, 18-way electrically adjustable seats with a new backrest design that boosts legroom for rear seat passengers, and the passenger display. All occupants will particularly appreciate the new wind deflector which, when the top is dropped, cuts air flow inside the cabin by 30% and also reduces aerodynamic noise.

VINCE CAMUTO LACE SLEEVE SWEATER Gently billowed sleeves of sheer, paisley-mesh lace gathered to fitted cuffs transform a cozy mock-neck pullover into über romantic top. $99 / Available at Nordstom.com

LACE, THE MOST LUX OF THEM ALL Where it came from and why we love it Lace is a very well known fabric. When you think lace, what most likely comes to mind is luxury. Lace is a very delicate fabric made of yarn or thread in an open weblike pattern, made by machine or by hand. Originally, linen, silk, gold, or silver threads were used. It was worn by some of the most well known people in history, which is why we connect lace with “fancy” and “luxurious”. Lace goes all the way back to the times of Queen Elizabeth I (6th century). Lace collars, lace caps, lace shawls, and it doesn’t stop there! Lace was

used (and still is) to not only be worn as clothing pieces, but used to decorate the home! Today lace can be found almost anywhere. Typically one would wear lace as an undergarmtent, or on speceial occasions. You can now find lace in everyday clothing. You would want to save it for a nice dinner, or a date, and obviosuly lace is almost always found in wedding dresses. Lace will forever be a fabric that will give elegance to your wardrobe and house.

All that fur! In the fall, you can’t go wrong with fur. And now there are so many compnaies that make faux fur pieces so that you don’t have to feel bad about wearing fur. It can be a fur scarf, or a fur jacket. (Boots with the fur?) Every year during the cold months you see a lot of trends, but fur is one that has stayed and will continue to stay.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

SELENAGomez by Courtney Caggiano

As one of the world’s biggest music icons, Selena Gomez has struggles that go far beyond trying to keep her music relevant and remarkable. After revealing through an Instagram post that she had undergone a kidney transplant over the summer, the 25-year-old singer has begun to open up about her health, heartache, and journey to happiness.

While in the public eye, Selena has remained unashamed about her battle with lupus over the past several years. In 2015, she shared with her fans that she had received chemotherapy as a method to treat her illness, and she had stated that the reason for her most recent hiatus was to take necessary measures to deal with anxiety and depression, critical side effects of her disease. Although she expressed to fans in 2016 that she is “very healthy,” her 2017 kidney transplant caused many to wonder if she is in a worse condition than she had led others to believe. Lupus, which is a disease that causes the immune system to begin to attack the body’s organs, commonly damages the kidneys. About half of all lupus cases affect key organs, especially the kidneys, heart, and brain. Thankfully for Gomez, a kidney transplant is usually not given to a patient unless the lupus is in remission. The singer’s disease was most likely treated a few years ago and is currently under control, which is necessary for the kidney replacement to take place. Gomez’s kidney donor, actress Francia Raisa, is the songstress’ long-time friend. Even after such a traumatic summer of recovery, Selena has much to be thankful for, especially her life. The past few months have been nonstop success for the star, as she debuted her single, “Bad Liar” on May

18, which included a music video release exclusively on Spotify—the first video premier ever to stream on the music service. Her latest single, “Fetish,” has climbed up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and her new sound is catching the attention of fans and critics alike. Last year, luxury brand Coach chose the singer as their new celebrity spokesperson, spotlighting her with a variety of the company’s fashions on their social media sites. In this role, Gomez has promoted the brand’s merchandise as well as her own limited edition handbag collection that she designed for Coach. According to a social media analysis, Coach has increased their number of followers by about fifty percent since the pop star has associated herself with the brand. This skyrocketing success for Coach is partly due to the fact that Gomez, with a following of more than 128 million, is the world’s most followed person on Instagram. As the queen of social media, the singer has learned the benefits and challenges of living in a world that relies so heavily on this unique form of communication. “It’s good to be connected, to see things, and to get a sense of what your friends are up to,” she says. “But it also allows people to think they need to look or be a certain way... Now it feels more zoomed-in—you have ugly people trying to get negative things from you, and the energy makes you feel bad about yourself. You can’t help it. It’s very hard to find out who you are during all that mess and pressure.” Wise words from an even wiser young lady, who has been given clarity through some of the most difficult experiences life has to offer.

FALL WILL NOT BE THE same without plaid.

Fall simply will not be the same without plaid, tartan or flannel. You know fall is here when all the clothing stores have plaid on their displays. Its unique pattern gives the casual, cozy vibe, which is why it is so popular in fall and winter. And fashion designers have also started to make more elegant clothing pieces using plaid, steering away from the casual vibe it gives. Of course plaid comes in bright colors too, but you want to go with the plaid or tartan that has burgandy, dark green, black, blue, or grey.

WEARABLE POPS OF COLOR Where and how to wear them!

You want to step out of your comfot zone, but not too much, and perhaps you don’t know which step to take. Sometimes smaller, more simple, is better for you instead of going all out and making a huge wardrobe shift and buying a neon orange blazer that you are only going to wear once. There are many ways to do this and I’m sure there is a way where it suits you best! Start off with a base color. Some examples are, navy, black, grey, or beige. Once you have your base color picked for your suit, then choose what and where you would like the pop of color to be. It can be anywhere from your tie, bowite, hankerchief, socks, or even your blouse under your blazer! These small adjustments make a big statement, believe it or not. And as far as what color to choose as your “accent” color, you can pick any. Find a color that looks good and stands out against the base color that you chose. Another thing that you can do is choose a pattern. Many ties, socks, and hankerchiefs come in different types of patterns and prints that also give the same affect. Next time you have the opportunity to wear a nice blouse or jacket, wear a pop of color of your choice!

DRINK UP! Meet the stars who’ve launched their own brand of booze! By Riesa Pascal

| STYLETOME.COM

From Jim Bean spokeswoman Mila Kunis to Bud Light commercials starring Will Ferrell, celebrity endorsements of alcohol labels is certainly nothing new. However, these days many celebrities are stepping away from promoting other campaigns and beginning to take ownership of their own booze labels instead. Take a look at the following celebrities who have embraced this trend and attached their famous names to their own alcoholic brand!

CELEBRITY SOUP

Dan Aykroyd After noticing a lack of additive free vodka in market, Dan Aykroyd decided to make one himself and conceived the idea of Crystal Head Vodka. He partnered with artist John Alexander who designed the bottle based on the pair’s shared fascination with the legend of the thirteen Crystal Skulls. The vodka is quadruple-distilled and seven times filtered, with the final 3 filtrations taking place through Herkimer diamond crystals. The product launched in Southern California in 2008 and is now available worldwide.

Sean “Diddy” Combs In 2007, Diddy agreed to become a brand ambassador for Ciroc which was struggling to sell 40,000 cases a year. A decade later, Ciroc is now an internationally recognized brand and Diddy has an “equal-share venture” with profits from the brand being split between him and manufacturing partner Diageo. Today, Diddy regularly collects an 8-figure paycheck from the company and is even bringing other celebrities on board. In August, Diddy announced that a new flavor of French Vanilla would be produced in partnership with hip-hop artist French Montana.

UB40 We’re all familiar with UB40’s smash hit “Red Red Wine,” but did you know that the infectious reggae-pop classic now has an official Bordeaux that you can drink while you listen to it? In 2014, UB40 partnered with wine producer Jerome Jacober and his company Eminent Life to create their latest launch, Red Red Wine. The product is logically being marketed alongside UB40’s 2017 tour.

Channing Tatum This year, Channing Tatum launched a line of spirits labeled Born and Bred Vodka which is made in partnership with the Idaho-based Grand Teton Distillery. “On the inside label, once you drink it down or if you get your eye really close to the bottle, it says ‘Cross my heart and hope for mischief,’” says the former stripper turned actor. “That’s just what I want when I pour myself a drink. I want to just cause a little havoc, get into some trouble, get into some safe, manageable mischief.”

The Hanson Brothers In 2013, the Hanson brothers partnered with craft beer company Mustang Brewing to create a drink that raised a toast to their 21st anniversary. Together they founded Hanson Brothers Beer Company and launched its flagship pale ale MmmHops, a tongue-in-cheek homage to their hit single “Mmmbop.” Hanson shared the first taste of the beer with guests attending the premiere of The Hangover Part III.

Adam Levine & Sammy Hagar Maroon 5’s Adam Levine and Van Halen’s Sammy Hagar recently launched Santo Mezquila, a new alcohol brand dubbed the “world’s first mezquila.” The idea for the blend stemmed from a dinner in 2015 when Levine, Hagar and a friend decided to switch up their drinks from tequila to mezcal. The trio found the smoky taste of mezcal overpowering and poured it in their tequila glasses. They found the new mixture to be quite tasty, and the idea of Santo Mezquila was born.

Justin Timberlake In 2014, Justin Timberlake launched an 80-proof, triple-distilled tequila named Sauza 901 as a nod to his hometown area code in Memphis, Tennessee. Like Timberlake, the 100% agave tequila is super smooth and to this day Timberlake still has a hand in every part of the business, from tastings and bottle design to marketing and promotions. It’s time for training 101 on how to shop for your favorite beauty products this Black Friday. If you don’t know what this special day consists of, here is some context: Black Friday is held the day after Thanksgiving and it is the biggest shopping day of the year. Think about that one beauty product you’ve been wanting this fall season. Now eliminate a few bucks off the original price. Envision yourself with extra tips and tricks on how to score the deal. You have success! Here we provide the best ways to tackle November 24th, 2017 and just about any Black Friday afterwards.

1. Stay Updated Research. Research. Research. Best of all, sign up for email newsletters from your favorite brands for early access to discounts. Make a game plan and download shopping apps, follow your favorite retailers on social media, and search for ads online.

2. Don’t Be Fooled Some stores increase prices weeks before Black Friday comes around which makes discounts appear higher. Take a look at their original prices

beforehand so you don’t get tricked into buying an item that is not as significantly cheaper.

3. Plan Ahead If you are trying to stick to a budget, make a list and decide how much you want to spend on each person. Yes, this even includes a price range for yourself. This will ensure your hidden lunatic persona won’t make a grand appearance on Black Friday — especially when you see that $400 Marc Jacobs purse you’ve been dying to buy for the past three months but still can’t afford to.

4. Bring a Buddy It’s safe to say Black Friday can bring out a double personality from anyone. It can bring out your best but it can also bring out your worst. The environment is hectic. Shoving, sweating, running, grabbing — it can make you tense and sometimes you might just end up picking items you don’t really need. I mean, do you really need another expensive pair of heels? Running deals through your friend will ensure neither of you go overboard on shopping.

Yes, hand maintenance does exist 21st century news flash: If you believe manicures are only for women, you are wrong. Men need to care for their nails just as much ladies do. No, we are not talking about getting an extravagant french manicure at the salon. Quite frankly, all you need is a neat, trim appearance.

Hand Cream Enriched with dead-sea mineral, AHAVA’s Time to Energize Mineral Hand Cream is the go-to product if you strive to have smooth, moisturized skin. Especially formulated for men’s hands, it absorbs instantly to heal rough, dry skin without leaving signs of greasiness. Grooming extends far beyond just the face. If you didn’t know, people are always looking at your hands to see if they look presentable. Hand maintenance is such a crucial extension of body nurturing. It lets others know how much you care about your overall appearance and health. Think about it. Daily, your hands touch everything. Your nails are constantly exposed to a sea of germs on bathrooms, public transportation systems, and so forth. Therefore, hygiene is a huge reason to keep your nails polished. Unkempt nails can cause a man to lose out on special opportunities depending on the industry he is in. Believe it or not, a man’s hands makes or break his deals. First impressions are everything. A guitarist’s fingers can affect his or her playing if their nails extend longer than Pinocchio’s nose. This is a problem because the player can’t strum

By Georyana Santos

or pluck the strings with ease if their fingernails aren’t filed. If a man is wearing a suit-and-tie, it is no different. Business men need to maintain a polished, clean look at all times and this doesn’t exclude trimmed nails. “But what if I lose my dignity?” said everyman, ever. No, you will not lose your “manly” reputation by going to the nail salon, either. Today more and more men are accompanying their wives or girlfriends. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with receiving a mini hand treatment alongside of them. Don’t turn away from a gratifying and pampering service because of shame. Attending a salon will also help you increase the health of your nails and cuticles. If you prefer to work magic on your hands by yourself, purchase a manicure kit. There are plenty of grooming sets designed just for men. Acquire one that includes a nail file, nail clipper, cuticle nipper, toenail clipper and tweezers.

Trench & Maple MUSICAL BEST FRIENDS By Georyana Santos

World’s most talented dog or inseparable best friends? For Trench, a multiinstrumentalist and fingerstyle guitarist, that question has written “both” all over it when referring to his loyal sidekick, Maple. If you’ve spent any time on Twitter, Vine, or Instagram over the past two years, chances are you’ve come across this special dog. Maple is Trench’s devoted female companion every time he sits down to play a catchy tune on his acoustic guitar. She is a mixed breed with part Border Collie, Golden Retriever and Shetland Sheepdog. Maple was adopted by her owner as a small puppy from a rescue shelter. Trench, who

60

resides in New England, began uploading clips of his guitar covers on Vine roughly two years ago in 2015 when he saw that Maple developed a special interest in playing with him. To his surprise, the videos soon went viral when others started to enjoy Maple’s steady paw rhythms on the drums and exclusive wooden bar strucks on the xylophone. While Trench does not show his face and likes to remain somewhat anonymous to maintain his privacy, the spotlight is fully on Maple and there’s no denying she enjoys it. If you’ve ever watched a clip, you can tell she is a singer and percussionist at heart. Generating more than 77 million loops on Vine, Maple’s steadfast drumkicking is also matched with her happy persona as she relentlessly sticks out her tongue in Trench’s Seven Nation Army cover by The White Stripes. Although Maple picks up on things quickly and performs on her own, Trench admits that she does get a little help sometimes. In interviews with her owner, Trench has stated that he works with her for an hour before filming the Vine. In that time frame, he holds her paw with his hand and teaches her how to strike the instrument at the right time. Still, even above all the training, that doesn’t take away from Maple’s intelligent and witty persona. In the majority of the Vines, she plays without any guidance. Other times, she just sits and relaxes to the sound of her owner’s playing to the Pokemon Theme song while actually wearing a Pokemon hat. She’ll even throw on some hip, black shades in a few videos. Yeah, talk about stylish, too! It is 2017 and Trench still continues to upload viral clips on YouTube, Vine, Twitter, and Instagram with his loyal paw-pal. To Trench, every day is National Puppy Day alongside his faithful Maple. This dynamic duo makes Andy and Woody from Toy Story seem almost ordinary. Buddies? No, more like musical best friends. Amusing and entertaining to watch, this makes every dog owner want to train their pet to play a musical instrument. IN THE KNOW

BUSINESS DISPUTES Equity for Services Performed and Raising Capital.

It happens every day: friends go into business with one

another, and invariably, one friend has more (if not all) startup capital than the other. In such a situation, equity is often distributed based on capital contribution and services performed. Unfortunately, the partnership agreement, operating agreement, bylaws or other operational documents rarely address what happens when a “services” partner fails to perform his or her services or performs these services at a level that is unsatisfactory to the other partners. Lack of funding or one partner feeling the financial burden more than others can put a strain on the business relationship if not properly structured at the inception of the business. Partners are bound to disagree at some point or another, which can lead to stressful posturing and expensive litigation. The best way to avoid the unwanted partnership dispute is to plan properly on the front end in your organizational documents, before any money flows in or out of the company. Equity for services performed and raising money can be hot button issues for fledgling partnerships, so here are a few pointers to keep in mind:

Vesting Business relationships can go sour quickly if one or more partners are not performing as they should. Delegation of equity to service partners should be done in phases, meaning a certain portion of the service partners’ equity vests in quarterly or annual increments pursuant to the “vesting schedule,” set to expire after passage of a certain amount of time, usually 3 to 5 years.

By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley

62

| STYLETOME.COM

The company should have the right to terminate the services arrangement prior to the expiration of the vesting schedule in the event the services are not being performed. This termination ideally should trigger a “buyout clause,” meaning the remaining partners are able to elect to buy out the service partners’ vested equity (to avoid having a “salty partner” lingering around). The equity which has not vested will be either redistributed or set aside to raise additional capital if needed. Which leads us to our next point.

IN THE KNOW

Seeking Additional Capital When corporations are first formed, it’s very difficult to predict how much capital will be needed – and, as with most things, anticipate going over budget. Be conservative when estimating your incoming revenue, be prepared to lose money, and have a plan for seeking additional capital in the event you need it. The favored form of corporation is no doubt the LLC, but this entity can prove to be tricky when additional capital is needed. True corporations (think board of directors, shareholders, outstanding/treasury/issued stock) are able to sell stock to raise money. This is a distinct difference from an LLC, which presumes that all the equity is distributed at all times. For example, if you have an LLC and have three

partners (or “members”) and the company wishes for each member to have 25%, one often makes the mistake in assuming the remaining 25% is unowned and is available for sale. Not true. The 25% would technically be distributed pro rata amongst all existing members, who then may each decide to sell 25% of the equity to a new member to raise money, and subsequently each member’s equity would be reduced pro rata or diluted. To avoid this complication or misunderstanding, the operating agreement should be very clear on issues surrounding capital raises, particularly in an LLC. Almost inevitably, one member will kick in money for the operation of the business while others are unable to. Does this entitle that member to additional equity? Is it a loan? If so, is the loan entitled to a priority payback? How does this effect voting rights?

These are common situations with endless creative solutions, which often need to be tailored to suit your business. So, time for the shameless “consult your attorney” plug. Spending a little money on the front end can save you a boatload on the back end… and please, avoid “legal template” websites if you can! No matter how simple your business, there is always some essence of a “needs analysis” that should be conducted, and your operational documents should always be custom tailored (and updated and amended) to suit your needs.

SPOTLIGHT ON REAL ESTATE

By Hooman Hamzehloui

WHY SHOULD I INVEST IN

COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE? The economic crash of 2008 sent

commercial real estate prices into a free fall. According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Real Estate, property values plummeted by 10.6% in the fourth quarter of 2008. As we all know, it only got worse from there. This created a spectacular buying opportunity for savvy investors. They didn’t have to reach for low hanging fruit. All they had to do was pick the fruit off the floor. Commercial real estate investors don’t make emotional buying decisions. Investors are primarily focused on getting the highest return on their investment while minimizing their risks. Usually the deals with the highest risk offer the highest rewards. A perfect example of this is a shopping center we sold to a client in January for $1,525,000. The property consisted of 149,000 square feet, sitting on 15 acres of land at a very busy intersection. Now this center was only 50% occupied and it needed some renovations, but it was still bringing in a net operating income of $166,000 a year. The main tenants of this center were Cash America Pawn and Mcdonalds. One doesn’t need to be Donald

Trump to see the value in this acquisition. Our client started with a fresh coat of paint and the center started to come to life. Prospective tenants began to fill the vacancies and the net operating incoming slowly started to climb. The Mcdonalds ground lease will soon be closing for over $1,500,000 dollars and our client will be playing on the house’s money. Within a year, they will have received all their money back, and they will have a shopping center that will bring in over $200,000 dollars a year until they decide to sell. As their occupancy reaches closer to 100%, that net operating income will only continue to rise. With annual escalators in the leases, that number will eventually reach north of $350,000 to $400,000 a year. Can you say “Show me the money?” This was such an incredible deal because it required a little work and some strategic planning. There are plenty of buying opportunities out there that will produce similar results. Keep in mind that in the game of high risk, high rewards real estate investing, it is imperative that you use the help of a seasoned commercial real estate professional. Before you choose your broker, ask them to show you their

recent resume of investment sales. Ask them to show you the letters of recommendations from their past clients. Don’t just take their word for it, look up the transactions online and verify if the numbers that they’re bragging about match up to the numbers recorded in the public record. The numbers don’t lie, but swampland sales people do.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW Special Promotional Feature

FEDERAL GRAND JURIES Federal grand jury investigations of high-profile individuals often draw the attention of the media. Most Americans have little or no knowledge of what a grand jury does and how it operates. Under the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution, a person cannot be charged with a felony by the Department of Justice unless an indictment is returned by a grand jury. An indictment is the formal charging document that sets forth the crime that the federal government wants to prosecute. The originators of the Constitution sought to provide a safeguard against abusive prosecutions by requiring the decision to bring the charges be placed with a grand jury rather than totally at the discretion of police and prosecutors.

A grand jury is comprised of 23 members of the community that are selected at random from voter registration lists. The grand jury conducts its business in secret, meaning, that it is not open to the public. The only people allowed into the grand jury are that grand jury members, the prosecuting attorney, a court reporter, and the witness. Two witnesses are not allowed in the grand jury at the same time. No judge is present in the grand jury. The attorney for the government must be an attorney with the United States Attorney’s Office or the Department of Justice. The function of the government lawyer is to present witnesses to the grand jury, question the witnesses, advise the grand jury of the law, and draft the criminal charges in the form of an indictment. To return an indictment, there must be at least 16 members of the grand jury present and at least 12 votes to approve the indictment. The grand jury, in making the decision to indict, is not required to find guilt beyond a reasonable doubt but only that there is probable cause to believe that the person indicted may have committed the crime. The potential defendant has no right to appear before the grand jury and the lawyer representing the potential defendant has no right to address the grand jury or present any information that the indictment should not be issued.

Grand jurors can request the prosecutor to issue subpoenas to require individuals to appear in the grand jury to answer questions and produce documents. The government lawyer, with the assistance of a federal investigator, such as an FBI or DEA or agent, decides which witnesses to put in the grand jury. The government lawyer may only put the investigator before the grand jury to summarize the evidence. The government lawyer may subpoena the target of the investigation. If subpoenaed, a person must appear before the grand jury. The person who appears before the federal grand jury has no right to have his or her lawyer present during the questioning. However, the witness may have his or her attorney outside the grand jury room and may leave the grand jury to consult with his or her attorney. The best practice is for the witnesses to consult with an attorney experienced with the operations of federal grand juries before appearing to testify. All people who appear before a grand jury, including the person to be indicted, has the right to refuse to answer questions based upon their right not to incriminate themselves under the Fifth Amendment. The right not to answer a question can also be based upon a legally recognized privilege. For example, a person cannot be forced to answer questions concerning discussions with their lawyer or discussions with their spouse. Many have complained that some government lawyers abuse the grand jury process by failing to disclose information that would show that the individual should not be indicted. While the grand jury started as a shield to protect against abusive prosecution, it appears that today it is also used as a tool of the prosecution. It must be remembered that an indictment can be the result of evidence to justify a criminal charge or can be the result of hiding evidence from the grand jury that would otherwise prevent the government prosecution.

HARBOUR ISLAND By Elliot Mintzer President of MySky Aviation

There are more than 700 islands in the Bahamas, but Harbour Island is one to treasure..... At first glance, the casual visitor to Harbour Island may take this sleepy island community as nothing more than very relaxed. But stroll the quiet, leafy streets and you might run into some frequent VIP visitors who, like most of the island’s high-end guests, are drawn to its picture-perfect colonial architecture, laid-back lifestyle and natural beauty. Harbour Island was named Best Island in the Caribbean in 2015 and it is also featured in its Best Beaches on Earth list in 2013 and draws visitors for many reasons. One is because it is a unique island....one of the best beaches in the world....Another is getting around by golf cart which is the main form of transport on the island, that in itself is a unique experience. Harbour Island has the highest concentration of second-home ownership in The Bahamas; it is definitely a little bright spot. With a mix of residents, old and young, the island has a great feel of serenity but also activity. Resorts with 5 star amenities and old charm homes provide visitors with a choice of options. Reaching Harbor Island from Orlando is a simple private flight from the executive airport using a PC12 TurboProp that seats up to 8 guests. In 75 minutes, you’ve landed in Paradise. Harbour Island is called the “Nantucket of the Bahamas”; come visit for yourself and see why.....

NOVEMBER DECOR: CANDLES

It’s time to light up your season One of the most exciting things about fall is deciding which fragrances will take center stage inside of your home. Scents like apple, cinnamon, and pumpkin are November classics - perfect for sparking warm, cozy aromas in the bedroom or kitchen. While burning scented candles year-round is enjoyable, there’s something about picking out autumn aromas. Fall scents are atmosphere-shifters and ooze complete relaxation. It’s time to fill your home with pleasant fragrances that will make your space more inviting this season. Here are our top three favorites from Yankee Candle.

BRIGHT AND ALL WHITE

Achieve a trendy minimalist look

An interior design trend that was predicted would go away this year is still sticking around. This season, it continues to be all about white. White countertops, white cabinets, white walls. There’s no denying that this minimalist trend ensures a light, airy feel inside of the home. Add personality to your space by throwing in some distinct wood pieces, plants, or cozy textures. Gravitate towards bright and white (spaces) and give your home a rich, sophisticated, and clean look.

A fresh men’s hairstyle can do wonders on him, but a bad cut can make him look a bit off. When you’re trying to enhance certain facial features or give your hair more volume, one fact remains: choosing the right haircut can be tough. It’s safe to say that your hair is a bold extension of your style. It’s not a part of the body that you can necessarily cover up or hide. There’s pressure to look good while remaining confident, so these decisions don’t get any easier as time goes by. Question is, how do you choose the perfect haircut? Check out how we lay out our advice in three easy steps.

1. Choose the right barber The best way to find your ideal hair stylist is through personal recommendation. If you see a co-worker or a friend with a fresh cut, ask him where he got it done. Having a regular barber will ensure that you receive a consistent, sharp haircut each time. The best part of it all is that he or she can always guide you to the right hairstyles and suitable lengths. The ideal barber will also learn the shape

of your hair texture and give you advice on the best products for your hair. (Tip: make sure to always book appointments ahead of time so you don’t have to run somewhere else.)

2. Blow-dry that hair In order to receive the silky, smooth look, it’s essential that you blow-dry your hair from the roots to tips. Rubbing your hair with a towel after it has been washed is not enough. Every man should carry a good quality hairdryer unless the final look includes water and gel.

3. Pick the right products Everybody’s hair is different, so what may work for your friends’ hair may not work for yours. Specialized products, such as sea-salt spray, wax and texture dust serve as a general rule. The best idea would be to ask your barber for advice because he or she will already know the ins and outs of your hair.
