magine a home where there’s a place for everything and everything is in its place, without sacrificing style. Look no further than 60 West Plains Road in the Sage Creek neighbourhood. Built by Foxridge Homes, this unique showhome was custom designed with multipurpose functionality in mind. “If you like organization, this is the home for you,” says Colleen Chaput, Marketing Manager, Foxridge Homes. This home’s design takes into account the busy lives of today’s families, which members of the Foxridge Homes team understand and appreciate. “Our team members have families and they like to think about the details that make a home more efficient and liveable,” says Chaput. “We love organization.” All sorts of creature comforts are considered in the plan. Literally. In the walk-in pantry, for example, there’s a food and water dish set under a shelf. The shelf can be tucked in when not in use, keeping the floor clutter free. “We have dogs, too,” laughs Chaput.

The home’s spacious and welcoming front entrance hall is bright and airy. Just ahead: a unique glassed-in area perfect for a study, private office or a music room.

Including a space for Fido is just one of myriad details that make this two-storey, 2,422-square-foot home a standout. (And why it was one of the grand prize choices in the 2019 Tri-Hospital Dream Lottery). “We’ve customized every nook and cranny possible,” says Chaput.

Rounding out the main floor living area is a modern powder room with floating cabinet and sink unit, and a large mirror extending to the ceiling to make the room feel even more spacious.

Among the top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances from Wiens Furniture are a 36” gas range stove, and an ingenious microwave drawer in the kitchen island.

Large, rectangular floor tiles were installed in the powder room, pantry and entranceways, while white oak hardwood flooring links all the other rooms for cohesive flow throughout the main floor.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a bright and cheerful dining room that can comfortably seat eight people. From here, there’s access to the outside deck overlooking the fully landscaped backyard. When entering the home’s mudroom from the garage, it’s clear that Foxridge Homes’ designers have reimagined this important family triage zone as a multi-purpose, stylish area. Here, there’s a handy bench to sit on and remove footwear. Coats and boots can be easily stashed away in a large closet, and groceries unloaded right into the huge walk-in pantry. Continuing

About the Builder

STYLEFILE

The team at Foxridge Homes knows the details make the difference. That’s why they involve their clients through the entire homebuilding process. Working closely with clients every step of the way ensures Foxridge Homes gets the details right in a custom home that caters to their life. And clients know they are in good hands. “We’ve all had experience with different stages of life, and this benefits our customers,” says Foxridge Homes’ Marketing Manager Colleen Chaput, who notes there’s more than four decades of combined custom homebuilding experience at Foxridge Homes. “We offer people more,” says Chaput. “More details, more organization, more multi-purpose options and more insight.” The Foxridge Homes custom home division was relaunched three years ago as a proud part of the Qualico family. Being associated with one of Western Canada’s largest, fully integrated real estate companies is a strong advantage for Foxridge Homes’ clients, who have access to more customization options available through the Qualico Design Centre. In addition to delivering clever and innovative spaces, Foxridge Homes designs and builds homes for comfort and style, durability and sustainability. Each custom home is backed by a comprehensive 1-2-5-10 National Home Warranty. According to Chaput, uncompromising quality and client satisfaction is the top priority for Foxridge Homes’ small, powerful team of expert designers, planners and builders. “They are so talented but so modest, and dedicated to what they do.”

Delectable Dining A taste in the park BY KELLY GRAY PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL ROBERTS

K

ildonan Park has long been a favourite haunt of those seeking quiet walks, playtime and marveling at the beauty of this north Winnipeg public treasure. Kildonan Park is also home to Prairie’s Edge, a 75-seat (50-60 seat patio) casual fine dining experience located adjacent to the duck pond inside the mid-century modern masterpiece designed by Winnipeg’s Number 10 Architects. Operated by Wow Hospitality and fronted by chef Grant Danyluk, his sous Adam Mysak and Manager Brian Unick, Prairie’s Edge offers a full slate from breakfast and brunch to lunch and dinner seven days a week. The menu offers gluten-free as well as vegetarian options. “Our menu is reflective of where we are,” says Danyluk, mentioning that their challenge is to create a range of dishes that have wide appeal given their location in a large public space. “Our focus is on Canadian and local fare. First and foremost, I make foods that taste good and work out from there. We source locally and strive to deliver flavours that are both familiar and fresh.” Indeed, this was our experience after recently dining here on a beautiful summer’s evening. We sat looking out onto the greenery of the park, observing the antics of the waterfowl while munching on the Harvest Salad, a well considered array of endive, quinoa, fennel and honey dew, dill and cranberry. Presentation was superb, as was the service that showed off Wow’s ability to source the city’s top front-of-the-house teams. Danyluk’s approach is to create a total bench-made experience. The

Manitoba beef is kitchen smoked with maple and hickory wood, the breads are born in-house, as are sauces and other key aspects. We tried the smoked beef and were blown away by the flavour that offered lots of wood, but not so much as to overpower the basic tastes of the lean beef brisket. Slices were generous and piled high on top of a hot German potato salad. Flavours were classic and the accompanying asparagus was fresh and still had snap. We also enjoyed the Brick Grilled Half Chicken and a Wild Boar Ragu. The locally sourced chicken was done at high heat and delivered a taste explosion thanks to the poultry’s quality alongside a tapenade-style sauce that married well with the local asparagus side. The Wild Boar Ragu was a joy. Succulent strips of Manitoba boar were piled onto a serving bowl that offered al dente broad noodles bathed in a tangy sauce that had just the right amount of acidity to complement the meat. Overall, the menu is a Canadian-focused flavor-forward experience that does not overstretch. Foods are familiar, the kitchen is on its game and the room, complete with massive window wall, is superb. Slices of summer Carbone is delivering the taste of summer with a twist. Over June, July and August the restaurant chain that brought us coal-fired pizza perfection is teaming with chef, author and Netflix star Pete Evans to create a unique offering that features vegan, keto and paleo inspired pizzas unlike anything most Winnipeggers have previously experienced. “It’s a first for Winnipeg”, says Benjamin Nasberg, President of Carbone. “Not only are we collaborating with one of the most influential chefs in the world, we are providing Winnipeggers with a new take on pizza, no matter what dietary restrictions or lifestyle one may have. Our customers asked us for Keto and Paleo friendly pizzas. So we got in touch with the best in the world to get it done.” “This is a new menu for summer 2019,” says Evans, who is in Winnipeg to celebrate the launch of the new items. He suggests that people are more interested than ever in better health and wellbeing. Evans and his team spent weeks in Winnipeg training the Carbone team on perfecting the new menu. The menu is predicated on key trends in cuisine that have foods more laden with protein, less processed, and conforming to our body’s needs for less saturated animal fats and a return to simpler fare. On offer will be four new summer pizza specials, four salads and an awesome vegan chocolate desert pizza. Dishes are all gluten-free. We tried the Vegan Mushroom pizza that is created using a hemp-based dough and portobello mushrooms, vegan cheese, lemon zest and truffle oil, as well as the Meatzza Pizza that features a meat-based crust. Both offered classic flavours married to the characteristic coal hit that is the signature of the chain. Tangy, full flavour alongside thin crust crispiness. Simply, pizza taken to a higher level teamed with Evan’s well-known culinary philosophy. While I only glanced at the Vegan Chocolate Pizza, I sampled the Moroccan and the Fennel Watercress Salads. Both were filled with the promise of summer air and offered the freshness of a dewy pine forest. The honey sumac dressing on the Moroccan salad was inspired, but the Fennel Watercress plate was a thing of beauty. The dill and mint teamed rather than conflicted, and the Manitoba asparagus really stepped up alongside avocado pieces and bits of pine nut. Wow! “I’m about great flavour first and foremost. But, great taste should not come with consequences. Let’s be real here. Change is necessary in how people eat. I want to be that force for positive

change in dining and home cooking,” says Evans. For those who have not seen his Netflix show Paleo Way, Evans is a watershed breath of fresh air among the culinary stars that shine in the entertainment universe. His vision is an all encompassing drive to generate a new common sense in food that is born of a realization that we need to reconsider our evolutionary roots, our patterns of physical activity and the need to reduce negative forces that are pushing us to madness.

offering, Carbone Cafe Club, (there are four new locations under construction, as well as Fast Fired on Regent Ave, and Fast Fired in Brandon. We really appreciate the Stepping Out with Style section in your magazine. As newcomers to the city (we recently moved to Winnipeg from Alberta), it’s been a helpful guide for entertainment ideas this past season. My husband and I also loved all the coverage on home designs and communities featured in Style Manitoba. Turns out we’re also looking for a new home, so your magazine was an excellent resource. Very slick looking publication! Kate Fitzgerald, Winnipeg Thanks for the great information in Style’s Beauty Section last issue. I was excited to read about Skin Rhum and loved the hairstyles featured. It’s good to know what’s out there where cosmetic clinics are concerned, and this locale sounds like an excellent choice. And of course, I always watch for the latest looks in hair and makeup! Zoey McPhail, Winnipeg When it comes to cooking, I’m always looking for new recipe ideas to try on my family and friends. Style’s last issue had some great ideas – two of which I served to my family recently. Both were hits! It would be nice to see your recipe section expand – the more ideas the better! I’ve watched Style Manitoba evolve over the past 15 years (still have issues dating back to 2002), and have noticed how distinctly the home designs have changed over time. Nice clean lines and open concept floor plans in today’s homes, as opposed to back then. Your publication has kept in step with all those changes – there’s always something eye-catching in every issue. Thanks for keeping readers current on what’s trending in home design – it’s been a pleasure looking through each edition that comes out. Jon Wiebe, Winnipeg

The look was finished with Unite Texturizing spray to leave flexible volume and bounce.

MARK KNOPFLER Down the Road Wherever (Blue Note) The easier he feels, the farther he goes. “Down the Road Wherever” suggests the carefree travelling song Mark Knopfler fancies, but it comes from One Song at a Time, about a musician eager to play his way out of his grim surroundings. Another song, “Good on You Son,” could be the happy conclusion, our man trading “a grimy sink estate” for the “Golden State.” The wry storyteller persists; the song of the doomed cowboy in “Nobody’s Child” could be a precis of Cormac McCarthy’s epic western, “Blood Meridian,” and “Drovers’ Road” is steeped in Celtic lore and sound. Knopfler’s guitar playing is superb as ever, if understated, and he knows when to expand the band, the punchy horns in the sexy “Nobody Does That” especially.

THE RESIDENTS Commercial Album – Preserved Edition (MVD Audio) From rock’s anonymous conceptualist-pranksters it seemed a jape too far – an album of 40 songs, each one minute long to match the length of a typical TV commercial and, perhaps, achieve comparable infiltration. Instead, those miniature songs (with a few instrumentals) were carved exquisitely to the minute mark, complete with defined endings, to make a pocket encyclopedia of invention. For reasons unknown, they also articulated a newly downcast mood, with prevalent themes of loss, longing and even death – and in the enthralling “Amber,” possibly all three. The instrumentation is equally rich, predicated on a sophisticated index of keyboard voices enlivened by the guitar commentary of Phil ‘Snakefinger’ Lithman and Fred Frith, and guest vocals by Lene Lovich and XTC’s Andy Partridge. As part of the recent Preserved series of expanded reissues, the original 1980 album is paired now with a disc of related, previously unavailable material. While it’s mainly for completists, it adds more diamond facets to the entrancing little gems.

(Mercury/Universal) German saxophonist/bandleader Klaus Doldinger is known best for his futuristic jazz-rock band, Passport, but he built a career long before that as a burly tenor player with a sixth sense for melody and a skill for cresting the latest waves in jazz, from bossa nova to blues. This budget-priced set collects five albums cut for Philips from 1963 to 1967 that bristle with vitality. The earliest sets, Jazz Made in Germany and Live at the Blue Note Berlin, are steaming, with organist Ingfried Hoffman driving hard while mastering the textural subtleties of his instrument. Doldinger Goes On introduces more players and colours, including twinned basses, Volker Kriegel’s guitar and the leader’s keen soprano sax. The closing disc, So Much Doldinger, revives rare Eps, soundtrack music and some of the hip jazz-pop sides he recorded as Paul Nero. At the price of a single CD, this quintet is irresistible.

uffy Sainte-Marie has come a long way from her breakthrough hit Universal Soldier, a ‘60s era anti-war anthem that was part of her blacklisting in US media for two decades. Today, she is still beautiful, still a diva and still shaking things up with insightful music and art works that inspire and engage. Awards and kudos are numerous for this poet, visual artist, musician and beacon of peace, love and understanding. Listed on various Internet sites are close to 40 significant points of acclaim that include 1983 Academy Award and Golden Globe for her song Up Where We Belong, Juno’s and Gemini’s, an Order of Canada, 15 honourary doctorates, a Polaris Prize, as well as a number of Indigenous Music Awards. Recently (April 1, 2019) she was inducted into the Canadian Music Writers Hall of Fame, an accord that spotlights a life that has seen Sainte-Marie travel from her Cree roots in the Qu’Appelle Valley to her current home in Hawaii. Along the way, she has channeled hope and truth with a sound that is as much Phil Ochsstyle folk roots as it is hard driving rock.

36 | STYLE MANITOBA | SUMMER 2019

“The world continues to be a diverse bunch of people, and I’m pretty much used to being a gourmet item to some people and a household name to others,” says Sainte-Marie from her base at her Hawaii home and studio. “I think that industry awards give people who make a living in music a higher and broader and deeper profile of each other. I know I always learn all kinds of unexpected things from the artists who get honoured each year. I appreciate being honoured myself, but I also like to get to know other pros in music.” She comments that along her road she has been blessed with great mentors and supports. She credits her mother who raised her amid tough circumstances. “She was so smart and so nice. Never really had a chance to bloom,” shares Sainte-Marie, also mentioning Emile and Clara Piapot of Saskatchewan’s Piapot First Nation, a couple who helped her bridge her first nation heritage later in life. “They took me in and made me their own and carried their Cree traditional ways so gracefully you learned how to be a human

being as easy as breathing. I was also helped along the way by Valorie Johnson (Seneca), a Ph.D in education and former program officer at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. She taught me everything about professional philanthropy, collaboration, partnering and judging effectiveness.” Musically, she points to Chet Atkins and Harry Belafonte as musicians who celebrated natural talent and showed her a few music industry ropes. Obviously Atkins and Belafonte gave Sainte-Marie a good grounding. She has been writing, touring, creating and making a difference in the world for decades. Her most recent album is Medicine Songs (2017), a compilation of new material and reworking on tunes from her considerable catalogue. The album includes both her recent team-up with Tanya Tagaq on You Got to Run as well as Universal Soldier. “Musically, I’m the same as I was when I was three years old and fell in love with my favourite toy: the piano. Curiosity rules. No pressure. I can make music on anything.

From making electronic music in the 1960s while making my living as an acoustic guitar player, I’ve always mixed it all up, no rules. I’m dyslexic in music (I can write it down; I just can’t read it back the next day.) I use everything and anything that’s around: homemade instruments, computers, loops and breaks, symphony orchestra, bongos. It’s all good. Have fun with whatever’s available,” she says, adding that her writing process is totally unschooled. “I hear the song in my head, and then sometimes I’ll work on it a lot, turn it into something new. I’ll work on an idea and play with it till I have something I like.” Indeed, Sainte-Marie seems to be always coming up with something new. She is a busy woman who works on a number of creative fronts.

“I’ve just finished several children’s books and I’m always writing curriculum. Short attention spans seem to be my target audience,” she laughs, pointing to the art of the 3-minute song and performances on Sesame Street. With an academic background that includes degrees (Education, Oriental Philosophy) from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, she is also involved in scholastic research. “I’m reading a lot of archeology these days and researching the 500 year history of enslavement of indigenous people of the Americas.”

information about Native American people and cultures that is useful, accurate and culturally sensitive. Well-funded by a variety of philanthropic organizations, Cradleboard uses digital multi-media to deliver core subjects through indigenous eyes. Participants are engaged in geography, social studies, government, science and music at each of three grade levels – elementary, middle and high school grades.

Back in 1997, Sainte-Marie founded the Cradleboard Teaching Project, an initiative she still fronts and supports although it is not yet available in Canada. The project offers a curriculum that seeks to raise selfidentity and self-esteem among Indigenous children by introducing them to engaging

“I serve the creator through the creative arts. In life sometimes you are lucky enough to be able to fan some flames. This has been my good fortune.”

ECUADOR Hummingbirds, sandy beaches & colonial towns B Y G R E G K L A S S E N “The best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.” - Pico Iyer

I’m happy to report that the Ecuador we discovered was both welcoming and wonderful.

In January 2018, I took my first-ever trip to South America, spending 12 days in its smallest country, Ecuador. I had heard the tropical country compared positively to Bali but was also warned that Quito can be unsafe. “You won’t be killed, but you’ll probably be robbed,” cautioned an Argentinean friend.

There are few things that I enjoy more in life than the first day of walking around and discovering a new city. Quito did not disappoint. The city feels private, almost like a secret. Literally a city in the clouds, Quito is tucked into a mountainous valley.

The old part of the city center is a surprisingly laidback, pedestrian-friendly maze of churches, museums and monuments. The mostly colonial architecture dates back as early as the 16th century. Navigating the old streets can be confusing, as many streets have two names. At the city’s heart is Plaza de la Independencia, flanked by palaces, a cathedral and city hall - a great people-watching place from its central garden. Quito’s one must-see is La Capila del Hombre, a museum custom-designed to showcase the art of the late, local artist Oswaldo Guayasamin. Located in the Bellavista district overlooking the city, the large square stone building has distinctively narrow, vertical windows that make the space sacred. The sun leaves no shadows on the walls during solstices or equinoxes. Guayasamin’s work is powerful and reminiscent of Picasso - he boldly and colourfully illustrates the suffering and violence of Latin American history. A visit to Quito’s Botanical Gardens demonstrated the unique flora that flourishes in this tropical climate. As a plant lover, it was thrilling to see flowers I had never previously seen, as well as to experience such incredible biodiversity, highlighted by many exotic and fragile looking orchids. We hired a local driver to negotiate the twohour, stomach-turning, hairpin turn drive from

Quito to Mindo. The tiny town tucked into a glorious slice of cloud forest is known for its birds, butterflies and orchids. Our lodge, Septimo Paraiso, is a rustic retreat with paths branching out into the surrounding cloud forest, climaxing in colourful hummingbird feeders. On another trail, a wooden slatted boardwalk leads to two pools, one streaming under with a plant-covered roof, an oasis to stop and ponder the beauty of the misty forest. The lodge offers to arrange hiking, rafting, and early morning bird expeditions, but we can’t think of a reason to leave this paradise. Every

time we walk outside, hundreds of hummingbirds dive-bomb us. I adore hummingbirds. They hover above like helicopters, eating and drinking up to 10 times their weight daily. Seeing so many up close is an ethereal experience. Some have green heads, others blue, each with a distinct tail; the spatula-tailed hummingbird quickly becomes a prized sighting. Next we drive to the coast, to the fishing village of Mompiche. The town was a well-known surfer and hipster town until several years ago, when the coolest surfers moved on to another

beach in Brazil. What remains is a shabby but charming town with a few basic stores, along one main dirt street connected to a spectacular u-shaped beach. We rent a three-storey airbnb treehouse, highlighted by large top floor bedrooms with delicious nighttime ocean breezes. One sunny afternoon, we hike to a nearby black sand beach, Playa Negra. It’s been cloudy for a couple of days, but when the sun finally does make an appearance, the temperature rises rapidly. I love the sun but this was like being in the focal point of a magnifying glass. We retreat to the cooling ocean until the tide starts to rise very quickly, then sprint to our towels, and up the rocky path. When we look behind us, the water has literally risen to where we were seconds earlier.

On a Friday night while having dinner, I order a glass of wine and am told by the waiter that no alcohol is being served because there is a national election this Sunday. That’s in two days! There’s technically no alcohol served on the Saturday either, although after promising to hide our glasses if the police come, we are served wine. It all makes me want to research the history of past Ecuadorian elections. We knew that Mompiche had no bank machines in advance, but we still wished we had brought more money. That said, lunch is only five bucks and dinner ten. Massages feel mandatory here. I am lucky enough to find a kind

young Argentinean woman named Lucia, who for $30, will give a soothing combination of reiki, Thai and loomi loomi. Lucia tells me that she was working in a bank in Buenos Aires and one day said to herself, “this can not be my life.” Now she now travels all over South America, occupation beach bum. Our last stop in Ecuador includes a drive up into the Andes to the thermal hot springs town of Papallacta. It’s only 90 minutes away from Quito but at an additional 1,000 meters in altitude, it’s a completely different world. Papallacta is one of the highest towns in the world accessible by car, so it stands to reason that getting there means driving on a very dangerous road, subject to avalanches and flash blizzards. The main resort here is built around a series of hot springs boiling beneath the mountain town. Even though the outside temperature is around 16 degrees, the January sun lulls us as we dip our feet into the hot water. The spa is surrounded by green valleys nestled along a fast flowing river and mountains, making for one of the trip’s most scenic hikes. Before bed, I head out for one last soak, and find myself surrounded by croaking frogs and wildly floriferous succulents. What’s not to love about Ecuador? Next time I’d like to experience Otavolo’s legendary market, the well-preserved colonial city of Cuenca, the Amazon rainforest and more beach towns. That said, South America’s smallest nation, Ecuador, punches well above its weight in terms of sheer diversity. Once bitten, you’ll be back.

A FINE

BALANCE By Leigh Patterson

W

hen the owners of this contemporary Tuxedo home decided their tired yard needed a refresh, they turned to the award-winning expertise of 3 Seasons Landscaping for help. After all, taking yards from ordinary to extraordinary has been 3 Seasons Landscaping’s hallmark since 1982. It’s clear that in this case, their singular care and attention to detail has been devoted to every aspect of this yard, so that its beauty can be enjoyed from any vantage point.

And you could say the project, which progressed over a couple of seasons, went… swimmingly. A large pool occupying most of the back yard became the focal point for the transformation, based on a minimalist design befitting the home’s sophisticated style. The 3 Seasons team removed an old, wooden deck at the rear of the home, replacing it with low-maintenance composite decking. They also replaced the original pool surround with large rectangular travertine slabs from Barkman for a clean, upscale look.

The home’s front yard curb appeal also received a facelift, which included the incorporation of limestone boulders in the front to match the existing Tyndall stone entryway. The extensive hardscaping ties into the home’s interesting and modern façade. “All the materials were carefully chosen to enhance the exterior,” says 3 Seasons landscape designer Paul Szakacs. Szakacs points out how the home’s metal siding is echoed in the low-profile aluminum edging used around the planting beds, for example. Standard metal chain link fencing around the back yard area is another deliberate and subtle link to the architecture. Even the patio and pool deck stones were laid out in a complementary pattern to the home’s exterior. 3 Seasons also created a balance between the landscaping and architecture in the front yard by incorporating mass plantings of Karl Foerster grass, Goldmound spirea, Autumn Joy sedum and dwarf lilac for year-round colour, texture and visual interest. Large pots of annual flowers provide poolside splashes of colour while large, leafy tropical plants tie into the funky vibe of the homeowners’ own wavy lounge chairs. “We used a simple palette of materials to keep the overall effect rich looking,” says Szakacs. “Because we built out this yard in stages, it was also important to have a comprehensive design so plant selections were consistent.”

44 | STYLE MANITOBA | SUMMER 2019

OUTDOOR LIVING

As with any 3 Seasons landscaping project, design was key to the success of this yard. Since every yard is custom designed and built to client specifications, needs and lifestyle, extensive on-site consultations with these homeowners helped the 3 Seasons team understand their unique vision. And as a one-stop landscaping company, in addition to cutting-edge design, all 3 Seasons clients can access a wide range of services, including hardscaping, fencing, lighting, irrigation systems, water features, outdoor game courts and more. When planning their yard with 3 Seasons, the homeowners requested that the new design incorporate a few holdovers from their old yard. These included a large spruce tree in the front and hedges in the back, both of which were maintained for privacy. A weathered wood screen was also worked into the design and is now used as a “backsplash” to one side of the pool. Now a refreshing, balanced blend of old and new, this yard’s low-maintenance features and high curb appeal is guaranteed to make a splash for years to come.

Top Tips for a Healthy Lawn Prelude Landscaping

A green, healthy lawn is easy to achieve with a bit of work. A little effort now will save you a lot of effort later, because healthy lawns are less vulnerable to pests, weeds, drought and other problems. Whether you hire a professional or handle lawn care yourself, set realistic goals - be practical about how you want your lawn to look. It may take a season or two of improving your lawn care practices to get the results you want.

Follow these tips: Awarded the MNBLA Award of Excellence for Best Residential Landscaping Company

1

Mow high – Cut your grass to a height of 6 to 8 centimetres (2.5 to 3 inches). This height will promote growth, prevent weeds, and discourage insect pests.

2

Water deeply - Water your lawn deeply (but not too often) to promote the growth of deep roots. Apply about 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) of water, only when needed (usually no more than once a week). Place a small pet food or tuna can on the lawn to help you measure how much water has been applied. Stop watering when the can is full. Too much water starves the soil of oxygen and invites disease.

30

3

Feed - Feed your lawn with compost. Let grass clippings stay on your lawn to provide nutrients.

4

Aerate - Aerate compacted soil, ideally in the fall. This helps water, air, and nutrients reach plant roots more easily.

5

Overseed - Sow new seed over thinned areas, or choose other ground covers for tough spots.

6 7

Replace - Replace grass with paving stones or mulch in heavy traffic areas.

Prevention - Check your lawn often to detect pests and other problems early. Make sure to identify problems correctly - then decide whether action is needed. Other than pests, plants can also be injured by poor growing conditions, poor maintenance, road salt, or dog urine. Keep in mind that a few weeds or insect pests in healthy lawns are not usually cause for concern.

Great value in backyard investments Yardcation – it’s the latest trend that’s seeing homeowners investing in creating that amazing backyard. “Think outdoor kitchens, pizza ovens, water features, and outdoor fireplaces that not only allow you to make the most of your outdoor living space, but can also add up to 15 percent value to your property,” says Pedro Gomes, CEO, Prelude Landscaping. “The best reaction from not one of our clients, is the reaction from all of our clients – when we finish their project no matter how elaborate it may be, we hear from them that we have met their expectations, or have surpassed their expectations,” says Gomes. “That is the greatest feeling in the world, when I have performed my best for our clients.” There seems to be at least one showcase project every year that stands out for Prelude, which is a five-star rated company, A+ BBB accredited company and 2019 Manitoba Landscape Association Award of Excellence winner. You may have seen their Paradise Patio Project on social media and it was showcased in Barkman Concrete’s catalogue for the last few years.

With a knack for staying ahead of trends, Prelude is adding a modular line of outdoor kitchens, and they will be importing European wood-fired BBQs and pizza ovens. (You can see samples on Prelude’s website and Facebook page.)

Outside in Glastar Sunrooms by SunShade have been the leading choice of Winnipeggers for decades. The reasons are simple. Sunshade has built their considerable reputation through manufacturing and on-site construction excellence as well as a process of continuous improvement since day one. “I truly believe we have the best product on the market because we manufacture here and understand how a great sunroom performs in the challenging Winnipeg environment,” says SunShade President Steve Sarens, adding that SunShade is the only sunroom manufacturer in North America that can obtain permits to build sunrooms on unpiled decks.

Steve reports that attention to detail is their calling card. “I go out and personally verify every measurement on every job and we even triple check at the factory floor to make certain there are no disappointments. We understand that success means constant vigilance every step of the way. Our systems are such that each part of the process, from customer engagement to design to manufacturing to construction and follow-up is mutually supported by our team,” explains Steve. “The successful construction of a sunroom has a lot of moving parts. We have developed methods to get these parts - whether it’s permitting, building trades or inspections - all moving smoothly. And, our customers are never left in the dark. We keep in touch throughout the process and then zero in on the best dates for construction,” he adds.

At SunShade there are no sales people. Rather, the company offers the services of designers who work with customers to get the right fit for their home. Customers can even tour the factory to get a better understanding of construction and design elements. “We work to eliminate human error to create a trouble-free sunroom. We can’t control aspects like the weather that can make construction a challenge, but we can take uncertainty out the design and manufacturing process,” says Steve, inviting people to drop in to 265 Sutherland Ave. or check out their website to discover the lifestyle upgrade that comes standard with every Glastar sunroom by SunShade. OUTDOOR LIVING Three season satisfaction Manitobans love the outdoors. However, factors such as mosquitos, the chill of a late fall day or the soggy mush of early spring can bring disappointments. Sunrooms from SunCo Sunspaces can mean steady enjoyment of your home’s natural setting over a full three seasons. According to Jon Billings, General Manager of SunCo Sunspaces, the company has been adding value to Manitoba homes for more than 20 years. “No matter what your budget might be, we have a product that will fit your dreams,” he says, reporting that they have exterior additions that offer one, two or three season designs. “Three season products are our most popular and our most value laden. A SunCo sunroom allows people to bring more nature into their lifestyles from March right through to the end of December, and a sunroom really adds value to your home.” Here, Billings comments that every dollar spent on a sunroom is held in the home’s equity value.

“A sunroom always stays in style. You might spend big dollars on a new kitchen, but over time that investment is degraded because interior design trends come and go. The beauty that a sunroom brings is always popular,” he says, concluding that when

ust Just 10 minutes west of Winnipeg sits the community of La Salle and its Prairie View Lakes community. La Salle offers much to those seeking a quiet respite from the challenges of a major urban centre. Today, the riverside community of more than 3000 people is one that features all the bells and whistles of a growing town with retail sites such as fuel, grocery and specialty stores, financial and health services, recreation opportunities such as curling, hockey, and a challenging 18-hole golfcourse. There is also well-appointed daycare and school facilities. In fact, there are more than 100 new licensed daycare spaces, and the Province has invested substantially in the renovation and expansion of the K-8 school. “La Salle lifestyle is about knowing your neighbours and making meaningful connections,” says Tim Comack, Ventura Land Co’s Vice President of Development. Ventura is the group behind Prairie View Lakes, a master planned multi-stage development that has delivered urban amenities alongside small town country atmosphere. Comack has watched the community expand as Manitobans seeking a family-oriented commu-

nity for growing families discover the attributes of the area.

“People are deciding to raise their family in a traditional community where they know their neighbours, have peace of mind from City issues, and get to build a far nicer home for much less money,” he says, pointing to the absence of costs such as the City of Winnipeg’s impact fee that can add $10,000 to the cost of a new home inside the Perimeter. “Plus, the much lower property taxes and water and sewer rates will result in sizable savings to residents each year!”

“The Prairie View park space includes walking trails, park area, lake views and substantial amounts of trees for a lush environment that has transformed this prairie landscape into one of Manitoba’s preeminent green spaces,” he notes. Here, area resident Colleen Renaud agrees. “The park is looking pretty nice now, as the trees are growing well. There is a nice walking path, and the playground area is very nice. The children of the neighbourhood love it,” she remarks.

The attractions of La Salle and its Prairie View Lakes neighbourhood are many. Cases in point could be the new arena or the expanded school, but the amazing playground shows the level of attention developers have placed on growing families and their needs. According to Comack, the cost was over $200,000 to create a place for kids to jump, swing, slide and bounce. He reports that the new installation is among the largest play structures in the province and works in tandem with the collection of outdoor features designed to take the lifestyle here to higher levels.

Properties to come home to Prairie View Lakes is a location where Manitoba’s leading new home builders have been able to really show off their talent. The community offers flexible architectural guidelines that allow customers to design their dream home their way. Lots are country sized and range from 60-foot to 70-foot+ widths by 140-foot to 250-foot+ depths, each backing onto a vast centralized park system complete with walking trails, playgrounds, meeting spaces and two large lakes. All these lots offer massive backyards where you can design the perfect backyard oasis. Customers especially appreciate the large side yards between homes, as well as the deeper front yards set back from the streets.

At 35 Kendall Crescent, KDR Homes offers a 1665 square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath open plan bungalow complete with walkout and deluxe ensuite. According to KDR Homes’ President Diego Vassallo, they first sought to understand the area and how it was attracting residents when they designed this showhome. “This is our first showhome in Prairie View Lakes, and our goal was to create a residence that offers a great fit for lifestyle,” says Vassallo. He mentioned a lot of features when we met to discuss the home. “The home has a modern country feel that we combined with a variety of unique architectural

details. For example, we used acrylic panels for a modern sheer look to the exterior finish and contrasted this with exterior timber panelling. We also placed industrial-style lighting to add a unique flair,” he says, adding that exposed beams travel from inside to the exterior to lend a characteristic look to the property that also features oversized 8-foot doors. 35 Kendall Crescent is a property that really gives when it comes to lifestyle attributes. The kitchen is designed with great family meals in mind. The cooking and family meal area comes with a quartz topped central island and a vast array of cabinets and storage options. Outside, residents can relax on the ample front porch that affords country classic views. “The piled deck is made using state-of-the-art composite materials that give a strong, long lasting maintenance-free performance,” notes Vassallo, who also points to the three-car garage as another strong selling point. “A threecar garage provides the kind of space that is perfect for storing all the toys like quads, snowmobiles and kayaks that make country living so popular,” he remarks, inviting people to visit www.kdrhomes.com for contact and property information.

Open bright designs a large master with full ensuite bath and walkin closet. “The covered front porch and large deck off the back are other lovely features of this home. There is a double 21-foot x 22-foot attached garage with direct access to the mud/laundry room,” he remarks, adding that people interested in the lifestyle upgrades in Prairie View Lakes may also wish to consider Ventura Custom Homes’ other showhomes in the community on Prairie View Drive. At 3 Kendall Crescent, Ventura Custom Homes’ showpiece property is a 1,735 squarefoot open concept bungalow. “This particular home is on a park lookout lot, very close to the lake with a fantastic public playground directly behind it,” says Ventura Homes marketer Travis Milton, a Realtor® with Royal LePage Prime Real Estate. “This Ridgedale model home is a great property if you have small kids or are a grandparent that has the grandkids over a lot. The families that have come through absolutely love this lot and location,” he says.

At a mere 10 minutes from Winnipeg’s Perimeter, Prairie View Lakes is a residential location with few compromises. Indeed, this

community is city close, but a world away in terms of lifestyle advantages for growing families. Here, grocery shopping or a trip to the credit union can be done by bike. A leisurely stroll can take you to the dentist, in for a massage or out for a quick snack. Youth can access a wide range of active lifestyle options, such as baseball diamonds, hockey rinks, as well as soccer and football programs on dedicated fields. The new Recreation Centre offers a huge indoor gymnasium and brand new fitness centre as well. School chums are neighbours and families can gather at the massive playground, and the town - the largest in the municipality - offers a full community hall plus an indoor curling rink.

Discover the advantages of the Prairie View Lakes lifestyle by taking the short 10-minute drive west of Winnipeg or visit www.ventura. mb.ca for more information.

The residential property at 3 Kendall Crescent is situated on a large 70-foot x150-foot fully landscaped lot with park view. Open, bright and inviting, this custom home has 9-foot ceilings on the main level and in the basement. According to Milton, this ceiling height has allowed the designers to create spaces with maximum use of natural lighting. The overall living area is large and flowing with a 10-foot kitchen island, custom millwork around the gas fireplace, and three spacious bedrooms including

t’s an exciting time to be in Bridgwater neighbourhoods. The fast developing amenities are leading to a growing sense of community and convenience in the area, which has in turn increased interest from new home buyers in the neighbourhood. The latest expansion to the area has seen Bridgwater’s Town Centre spill onto the south side of Centre Street, and also includes plans from the city to build both a kindergarten to grade 8 and a grade 9-12 school in the near future. Also under construction and opening in Winter 2019 is Altea Active, a state-of-the-art wellness destination located at 100 South Town Road, which will span over 80,000 square feet. The new facility will include dedicated familyfriendly areas with saltwater pools and a focus on holistic health. Visitors can also look forward to a dedicated Women’s-Only Club, group fitness studio and unparalleled family fitness amenities, such as rock climbing, a ninja course and a splash pad.

Off this momentum, StreetSide Developments (A Qualico® Company) continues to expand on two exciting condominium projects directly adjacent to the new fitness facility – The Rise Condominiums, a 7-storey concrete constructed condominium building, and 325 Park East, a unique stacked townhome development located across the street. Starting at $223,900, The Rise Condos are located at 300 Centre Street and offer gorgeous modern finishes and topnotch resident amenities like an outdoor courtyard with pool and common lounge. Construction on the outdoor courtyard and pool will commence in July 2019. The Rise offers one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, which would appeal to a single professional or even a growing family. Their spacious, open concept kitchens and main living space lead onto either a private balcony or terrace, perfect for hosting a barbecue or relaxing with a morning coffee. Across the street from The Rise is 325 Park East, an innovative stacked townhome design,

which offers an attractive price point starting at $189,900. Each of the stylish and functional townhomes deliver exactly the space and lifestyle features one could desire, including spacious kitchens and living spaces. The property also includes a common green space at the center of the development, and optional covered parking for those who would rather not have to brush off their cars in the winter. “It’s very exciting to see how much Bridgwater has developed in such a short time,” says Kelli Roach, Sales and Marketing Manager at StreetSide Developments. “Altea Active is going to be such an added benefit for anyone living at The Rise and 325 Park East.” The Rise Condos and 325 Park East Townhomes currently have display suites that are open for viewing Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-7 PM and Saturday and Sundays from 12-5PM. CELEBRATE LIFE AT THE CENTRE

Downtown Winnipeg has more entertainment per square mile than any other part of the city. When you live at 390 on the River, there’s more time to enjoy the fun. When Theresa and Elliott Hunter were considering the move from family home to condo, they had a clear vision of what their new life could be. They imagined waking up each morning to breathtaking views. They’d be surrounded by great entertainment choices. After a day or evening of fun, they’d return home to a quiet, well-built retreat, with stylish finishes and all the conveniences they desired. Finding a real-life version of their dream wasn’t easy – until the Hunters discovered 390 on the River, the new condominium development recently completed on Assiniboine Avenue, just east of the Osborne Street bridge. “We looked at all kinds of condos all over the city, and the only place that had it all was 390 on the River,” Theresa says. “Now that we’re here, it’s even better than we envisioned.”

EXCLUSIVE FINANCING OFFER For a limited time, Steinbach Credit Union is offering custom financing solutions exclusively for 390 on the River condominiums. Find out how affordable it can be to own spectacular views and style, just steps away from Winnipeg’s vibrant entertainment scene.

Today their favourite places for dining, theatre, sports and music are just a short stroll away. They might head over to the West End Cultural Centre for a concert, see an art show at the WAG or take in a special event at the downtown arena, all without taking the car out of the heated indoor parkade. Their favourite route for exploring the city is the Assiniboine River Walk, which is directly connected to the property by a private path. Now that summer has arrived, the surrounding neighbourhoods are alive with outdoor patios, a weekly farmers’ market and free concerts. The Hunters are big fans of events like the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, and this year it will be easy to take in everything. While others circle the streets hunting for a parking spot, they’ll be taking a leisurely walk over to the Exchange. Their condo on the 20th floor provides a quiet and cozy bird’s-eye view of the city’s beauty and celebrations. From their balcony, they can see the city changing colours with the seasons, the water taxi cruising down the Assiniboine and fireworks lighting up the night. On the sixth floor, 390 on the River also has ideal facilities for hosting private get-togethers. Theresa looks forward to using the 2,364 square-foot outdoor terrace and adjacent kitchen/dining area for an annual gathering of old school friends this summer.

New lease on lifestyle

S

outh Winnipeg offers much to those seeking attractive properties and upgrades to lifestyle. Coming early next year, The Onyx at 1792 Pembina Highway will add further value to this burgeoning residential sector. The Onyx is a multi-storey rental property that offers bachelor to three-bedroom suites in a variety of ample floor plans. “New trends indicate that prospective residents are looking for more of a turnkey lifestyle that is offered by the rental experience,” says Mark Stulzer, Leasing Agent for Ironclad Properties. He suggests that the freedom that comes from renting versus property purchase is seen as highly valuable. “You can move when and where you want as things in your life change,” he says, noting that The Onyx is set to meet that demand offering a wide range of amenities designed to take life to a new level of enjoyment. Suites feature premier finishes and aspects such as quartz countertops are standard. Suites come with a full range of six appliances that are teamed with décor.

“The Onyx will offer impressive amenities and services to complement the luxurious lifestyle our residents desire. We are excited to offer a concierge service as that will help add simplicity to a busy lifestyle,” says marketing manager Lauren Arrandale. She reports that the petfriendly building will offer a rooftop patio with a bbq area that delivers views of the city. “Our on-site fitness centre elevates apartment living by featuring both sauna and steam rooms, and it doesn’t stop there. We will also

have a theatre room, game room and business centre for our residents’ enjoyment. For additional convenience you’ll find a vehicle wash and a pet wash in the underground parkade,” she says, adding further that plans call for electric vehicle charging terminals as well as an on-site coffee station. “The Onyx is all about lifestyle, community and stress-free living,” says Lauren, inviting people to check out www.theonyxonpembina.ca for more information.

eing timeless, yet still on trend is hard to pull off, but Johnelle can do it. Part of Ashley HomeStore’s New Traditions collection, the Johnelle series pairs classic beauty and structure with an on-trend colour palette. “I love the colouring of this series. In the past it’s been browns with a more cherry tone, which is still popular and resonates with many customers. But the Johnelle series takes the warmth and beauty of the natural wood finish with the sought-after grey palette,” explains Leanne Ryan, manager of merchandising for Ashley HomeStore. In the bedroom, Johnelle is homey, hearty, and heavenly hued. The solid wood construction of the dresser and nightstands are beautified with a distressed weathered grey finish. Dark pewter-tone nail head trim adds to the richly rustic aesthetic, while substantial mouldings simply command attention. The bed’s grand mansion-style headboard options feature a picture framed panel or tufted beige upholstered style, as well as the option of a traditional footboard or storage footboard that doubles as a bench. Johnelle’s time honoured beauty with refined textures, style, and warmth also transitions into the dining room. Presenting in the same rustic aesthetic, the dining table features a large double pedestal base that supports the extension leaf top. Accent each end with a fresh and neutral linen-weave upholstered chair with classic camelback flair, then pair with a bench for a modern twist on the classic setting. The dining set is completed with a classic server, which features two silverware drawers set over three doors with adjustable shelves located in each cabinet. Hardware has a timeless aesthetic, finished in a dark grey pewter. Ryan states the classic styling of this distinct series ensures homeowners will have long-term aesthetic appeal, and with its neutral colour, pieces can be accented by multiple hues to really make it all your own.

KITCHEN &BATH

Modern look, functional elements

A

s the kitchen is often the focal point of any home, it sets the tone for the rest of the home. In this case, Kitchen Craft’s design flows seamlessly with the modern look and functional elements of this Broadview Homes show piece.

Kitchen Craft’s Lockhart door style - a maple slab veneer front with tapered square outside edges - utilizes a contemporary charcoal stain and chromefinish metal pull handles for a sleek and modern look. To help enhance the look of the kitchen, designers added stainless steel framed cabinet doors with glass inserts to help break up the dark woods. With lift up door fronts, and under cabinet lighting, these also add a unique element to the space, tying in nicely with the professional stainless steel appliances.

62 | STYLE MANITOBA | SUMMER 2019

Some of those appliances, including a dishwasher, are discreetly tucked into the eight-foot-long island topped with Gentle Grey Quartz supplied by Granite Mountain Stone Design. Since the kitchen opens onto an open concept living and dining area, the island serves as an anchor where guests can gather so homeowners can entertain and interact with them while working in the kitchen. The island’s functionality is matched by other elements in the kitchen, including extra banks of wide pot and pan drawers to enhance the storage space on either side of the stove, a built-in microwave under the countertop, and a corner pantry to complete this home’s epicurean centre.

TRANSPARENCY, QUALITY & TRUST Those are the three words to describe FRG (FORT ROUGE GLASS) BY MONICA WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL ROBERTS

O

nce you walk in the doors of their new facility located at 58 South Landing Drive, you will feel inspired and energized by all the possibilities with glass. Visitors are welcomed by the friendly and knowledgeable staff, and of course, Molly, the most loyal dog you will ever meet.

With over 50 years in business and more than a 100 years of combined experience, FRG is a third generation family-owned business that is constantly striving to improve what they do and how they do it. “We maintain that image with complete transparency and quality, from the quotes to the install, and of course, with the product. Trust is essential in any business and you want to ensure that is at the forefront. We stand by our product and step up to the plate,” says Mike Messervey, General Manager.

With summer just around the corner, people are starting to look at their decks and want to have clear sight lines. “When people are relaxing on their decks after a long day, or on the weekends with family and friends, the last thing they want to see is a railing blocking the view,” notes Monica White, Business Development and Sales Manager.

“We offer railings, showers, mirrors, custom glass for projects such as glass partitions in offices, windows and doors. One of my favourite products is the electrified glass, which you can turn on and off with the flick of a switch. It’s much better then having blinds,” he notes. “We also offer certified technicians for all your MPI automobile windshield claims. We take the pain out of doing the paperwork. We are very proud of our entire staff at FRG and their continued dedication every day. We couldn’t do what we do without them all,” states Messervey. SUMMER 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 63

“Clients love the feeling of having a clear, unobstructed view and knowing it is a quality, engineered product, whether it is interior or exterior,” she adds. “All our sales staff come to the table to brainstorm different designs and ideas for each individual project,” says White. “FRG completes the package with an on-staff auto cad architect and custom welding shop to fabricate new inventions.” With the summer months approaching, clients are also looking at their patio tables and cracked windows. “FRG can fix that for you as well. We supply and install new sealed units, which for those

64 | STYLE MANITOBA | SUMMER 2019

of you that don’t understand the difference, the sealed unit is the glass part of the window. You don’t always have to change the full frame. We take all the stress away for you,” explains White. “Our showers are popular with the black hardware and black grates. This is so on-trend right now and timeless. It adds a design element and texture to the space. They are easy to clean and maintenance free. Whether it’s for a steam shower, bathtub or just a single panel, we can do it all,” she says. “We also do many showers with satin nickel and chrome hardware. And bathroom mirrors are being installed to the ceiling with light and receptacle cutouts, making the space expansive and elegant. It helps you to reflect your style.”

Custom glass is becoming paramount in designer and architectural plans. ”Office partitions made of all glass add a nice touch to any space, offering clear sightlines, and creating the feeling of having more space,” suggests White. “No one likes to feel crammed between solid walls. We can do doors, and sliders, depending on what the functionality will be and what the space allows for.” FRG encourages you to visit them at 58 South Landing Drive to see for yourself the quality, transparency and the trust they will provide for your project. Look for the large red and black building beside Deluca’s as you are driving 3 minutes west of Costco on McGillivray. And, of course, have a drink with Molly.
