“Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be
ever in your favor!” Effie Trinket says as she always does, “Ladies first!” and crosses to the glass ball with the girls’ names. She reaches in, digs her hand deep into the ball, and pulls out a slip of paper. It’s Primrose Everdeen.
“I volunteer!” I gasp. “I volunteer as tribute!”
At first, I’m frozen, but then I catch sight of us on a
large television screen and floored by how breathtaking we look. In the deepening twilight, the firelight illuminates our faces. We seem to be leaving a trail of fire off the flowing capes. But it’s tempting, so tempting, when I see the bounty waiting there before me. And I know that if I don’t get it, someone else will. That the Career Tributes who survive the bloodbath will divide up most of these life-sustaining spoils.
