classic images gradually evolve into abstract angular colour patches, they become images reminiscent of modern art and they take on a more applied form as wall panelling. The house of 200 sqm can accommodate two or eight people equally comfortably, feeling neither empty nor crowded, thanks to FXVWRPLVDEOH IXUQLWXUH DQG ÀWWLQJV PRVWO\ E\ 'XWFK GHVLJQHUV 7KH FOHDU FXW 'XWFK IXUQLVKLQJV DQG primary colours, the simple ‘butt joinery’ used in the construction of the designs by Studio Makkink & Bey all celebrate the elementary design idiom that is characteristic for Dutch design.

C a m p e r S t o r e s , L y o n F r a n c e & R o m e I t a l y, 2 0 1 2 On designing the new store concept for Camper in Lyon France 2012 and in 2013 in Rome Italy, Studio Makkink & Bey returned to the basic purpose of shoes: to support walking. Walking, as the most primary way of moving through space, has shaped the interior design with its lines of movement and the physical structures that form the landscapes in which we walk. The physical rendition of movements forward, upward or downward is outlined in the staircases and in bright red lines on the VWDLUV ZDOO DQG ÁRRU 7KHVH OLQHV IRUP D UHG EOXHSULQW D &DPSHU PRGHO ZRUOG RI ZDONLQJ We’ve focussed on the reality of movement that was documented by E. Muybridge in photographic records of real locomotion. His study of climbing stairs shows the anatomy of how the body interacts

with our manufactured environments. The stairs in the interior are the embodiment of such an environment and extend the spaces upward and downward to create more surface to move, sit and lean RQ 7KH HIIHFW RI H[WHQVLRQ FDUULHV RQ LQ WKH OLQH GUDZLQJV RQ WKH ZDOO DQG ÁRRU ZKLFK LV UHSHDWHG LQ WKH PLUURUV WR WR HVWDEOLVK D QRWLRQ RI UK\WKP GHSWK DQG LQÀQLW\ 6WDLUV UHSUHVHQW WKH FRQMXQFWLRQ RI separate places, they can perform as place to meet. As part of the Camper store they could serve as a meeting point for a quick chat, a stand for spectators, a counter or just a seat to tie your shoe laces depending on the size of the staircase. Shoe display is endless on the steps that make a natural display platform for shoes.

l’ Hôtel Dupanloup, Orléans France, 2014 European Property Awards 2016 Highly Commended

l’ Hôtel Dupanloup, Orléans France whose splendor is comparable to other palaces built in the classical style of the Age of Enlightenment, is a place where patrimony and creation live in a symbiotic relationship. The building, a listed historical monument, once housed the municipal library.

The University a part of which it now shelters is just a short distance from the historical core of the medieval institution, where two Popes of the Middle Ages were educated, as well as the humanist Guillaume Budé and the protestant theologians John Calvin and Theodore Beza.

When planning began for the restoration of the Hôtel Dupanloup, named after the famous

preaching bishop, the pro ect benefited from an approach that enco raged st cent r design and sought to set up a dialogue between the works of art, the long line of famous personages from rl ans, the eeting archeological traces of the cit dating from classical anti it and the vitalit of this place, animated by the spirit of creativity. The history of the Université d’Orléans and its hometown becomes animated in a new interior by Studio Makkink & Bey, which is furnished with specially designed Dupanloup chairs and tables, catalogue pieces and customized furniture. The new interior design, De ter and inister, officiall opened in eptember .

l’ Hôtel Dupanloup, a newly opened research centre of the University of Orléans, was transformed b sing the historic timeline of former f nctions of the th cent r b ilding and e tracts of the city’s rich past that have fed the development of knowledge and the prosperity of the French town. hen it was a bishop s ho se the b ilding was ab ndantl filled with ob ects, patterns and images. ll this was erased to make it a librar filled with books and f ll of stories. ew designs show these function shifts in photo impressions on the tables and chairs show the renovation of the building,

while curtains and carpets reference the life and work of a few of Orléans’ most celebrated minds throughout the times in rich illustrations. The curtains are based on the iconography from archives of leading c lt ral instit tions s ch as the s e des bea arts d rl ans, the entre, and the aison de eanne d rc.

The sports theme of the Maison Hermès window display by Studio Makkink & Bey merges softness and the act of making to connect with the skillfully made fashion of Hermès. This edition of erm s street theater is a narrative feat ring soft te tile, oating movements, whirlwinds, a apanese master and a mastermind sewing an imaginary landscape handcrafted from woolen felt. The title ‘A Soft Gust Of Wind’ is a near quote of a famous Japanese wood print by master Hokusai.

The windy scene in the window display on the right shows a translation of the graceful movement of a scarf whirling on a gust of wind. The window display stages the Hermès heavily decorated scarf as a kite up in the air with the wind as competing force.The backdrop is a scenery that is stitched onto wool felt with trees and fig res plodding thro gh it. he drawing is based on an ill stration with

the title ‘A Sudden Gust of Wind’ by the well known Japanese printmaker Hokusai, an illustration of people who struggle as they seem to have been caught off guard by a whirlwind that tries to rid them of their papers, hats and scarfs.

While in the stormy scene on the right everything is about defying a meteorically changing force, on the left there s a fig re calml engineering the world to be, with a sewing machine. e s sewing a soft universe. The illustrations are drawn with black yarn that is cut off loosely to create a sort of r f ed effect with the ttering thread. ehind the artisan there is a poster that ill strates things related to meteorolog a classification of clo ds, nat ral elements, a weathervane, stars, the moon and the sun.
