Known as the â€œGateway to the San Juan Islands,â€? Anacortes is located on Fidalgo Island, the easternmost island in the San Juan archipelago and home to Washington State Ferriesâ€™ northernmost terminal, serving the San Juans and Canada. But with over 12 miles of saltwater shoreline, nearly 3,000 acres of city-owned forestlands, 468 acres of parks, and gorgeous water, island and mountain viewsâ€”Anacortes is being seen by more and more people as a destination location all on its own.

As proof of the eclectic nature of homes in the area, at press time there were 379 available homes in Anacortes, ranging in price from $155,000 to $2.75 million. Luxury homes in the area generally start at about $950,000 and currently make up 7 percent of all available listings. The largest new development currently underway, called San Juan Passage, will include 100 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified homes priced "ELLINGHAM at $500,000 to $1 million. Set in a 24-acre waterfront community, the project will feature three parks, a walking trail and an architectural style reminiscent of American seaside retreats and coastal towns. Several medium-bank lots for custom homes are also available, starting at $425,000. Between January and August 2007 the average sales price (averaged out over 238 transactions) -OUNT 6ERNON was $441,916. Of the eleven homes sold for over $1 million during this time, the highest registered at /AK (ARBOR $1.56 million. In the same eight months of 2008, the average sales price dropped modestly, to $412,875 with one quarter fewer transactions. The largest of these sales was also similar to last yearâ€™s, coming in at $1.55 million.
