Introduction

Studio Hillier LLC is an interdisciplinary design firm in Princeton, NJ, co-founded in 2011 by partners Barbara A. Hillier, AIA, and J. Robert Hillier, LHD, FAIA, PP. For over thirty years, we have formed the backbone of a vibrant, growing full-service architectural studio with the depth of experience and design talent to take on a challenge of any scope.

We work collaboratively with experts in the region and elsewhere who bring excellence and robust knowledge of the latest building technologies, including prefabrication and environmental systems and the preservation of historic structures. Our success is reflected in the number of repeat clients who recognize our rigorous performance standards in meeting occupancy dates, managing the budget, and delivering high-quality design and professional services. With over three hundred and fifty design awards, our reputation for excellence is evidence of our commitment to our clients, place, sustainability, and the built environment.

Over the last two decades, a representation of completed project types includes hospitals, international corporate headquarters, public and private libraries, a US government courthouse, an urban convention center, independent day and boarding secondary schools, colleges and universities, art centers/museums, research buildings, and multi-family projects. Our work is a mosaic of places, cultures, customs, and economies in locations ranging from bucolic open spaces to urban neighborhoods to densely urban communities. Through these projects, we work tirelessly to achieve our clients’ expectations and create architecture that embodies the vision and spirit of their dreams.

Studio Hillier’s office is located in the heart of the historic Witherspoon Jackson neighborhood in Princeton, New Jersey, and operates out of a converted machine shop and warehouse. We serve clients throughout New Jersey, Philadelphia and New York, Connecticut, Washington, DC, Beijing, and Shanghai from our Princeton base. We are only one hour from 2 international airports. We have projects in 27 states and 32 countries.

The following projects have been completed during Bob and Barbara’s careers, selected from their personal scrapbook, which spans 55 years of Hillier architecture.

PRINCETON, NJ

8 UNITS (PHASE 1)

The Institute for Advanced Study commissioned a new community of sixteen faculty residences on a site that looks out over Princeton Battlefield Park. The new homes continue the Institute’s historic commitment to modern architecture and provide an environment that responds to a modern lifestyle with their “Great Room” designs and open kitchens.

During phase one, eight faculty townhouses of approximately 3,000 square feet each were built at a total cost of $6.7 million. Each building has a full basement, patio, two aboveground living floors, and a groundlevel two-car garage. The ground floor comprises a living/dining room in an open-floor concept with a walk-out raised deck. The second floor has three bedrooms and two full bathrooms. Each townhouse has an elevator. Phase two, which is in progress, includes eight new townhouses to be constructed as a group of six plus two duplexes.

Copperwood

PRINCETON, NJ

153 UNITS

Copperwood is a 153-unit rental apartment complex on a beautifully wooded site in Princeton Township, surrounded by the 200-acre Princeton Ridge Preserve. Natural, muted colors and materials conceal the complex’s exterior in the woods, and the sunlit interior courtyards are enlivened with a hint of light yellow. This coloration has been implemented to respect the character of Princeton Ridge Preserve.

The context of the site is as important as the building proposed. More than seventeen acres of the twenty-one-acre site was preserved as dedicated public open space giving the residents unobstructed views of the natural setting in all directions. (This site design saved 487 trees, more than a previously approved design by a national homebuilder and disturbed only 17 percent of the site versus the original 77 percent.)

Copperwood is sited on a twenty-one-acre site on gently sloping ground adjacent to the public Hilltop Park. The project footprint was minimized by tightly organizing the five buildings around piazzas, courtyards, and gardens sitting atop a garage to preserve the site’s pristine beech tree landscape. The careful placement of the complex into the existing woods has minimized the site disturbance and tree removal.

Iona College Residence Hall

NEW ROCHELLE, NY

97,000 SF

At one time predominantly a commuter college, Iona’s current on-campus population comprises 43 percent of all students, with the demand for on-campus housing increasing each year. The university is committed to housing 60 percent of undergraduates on campus. The new residence hall houses an estimated 250 to 350 full-time students. At the same time, the street-level commercial space provides property tax income to the city and contributes to the revitalization of North Avenue.

The core of Iona’s mission is to serve students, manifested in their desire to provide a “living and learning” environment. This beautiful and technologically advanced residence hall was designed to attract more students who desire a living and learning Iona experience and to strengthen and maintain Iona’s close ties with the surrounding community.

Goucher College Athenaeum

BALTIMORE, MD

70,000 SF

The Athenaeum at Goucher College combines the energies, talents, and traditions of its campus and community in one central location. Anchored by a new, technologically superior library, the signature building serves as a physical centerpiece for the campus and the symbolic heart of its academic community. The new library expands the college’s collection capacity by 50,000 volumes, for approximately 350,000, and will be fully wired with state-of-the-art technology.

Outside the library’s doors, a spacious open forum—modeled after the amphitheaters of Europe—serves as a focal point for outdoor events and performances. The character of this wide-open space changes daily and even hour by hour. The lower level is a stage that can be configured to accommodate various kinds of readings, performances, panel discussions, and other public events. A giant video screen serves as its backdrop.

These central elements connect to a café, art gallery, college radio station, and center for the college’s community service and multicultural affairs programming, as well as space for exercise, conversation, and quiet reflection and relaxation.

As part of Goucher’s mission to be a “green” campus, the athenaeum incorporates several sustainable design features, including a green roof, a rain garden, highperformance glass, recycled materials, and efficient mechanical systems.

Inspired by the modernist, crafted aesthetic for which the Goucher campus is increasingly well-known, the exterior includes elements of glass, stone, wood, and copper the predominant materials found in Goucher’s buildings.

Cornell University Laboratory of Orinthology

ITHACA, NY

90,000 SF

The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology is a 90,000-square-foot center devoted to studying, appreciating, and conservating birds and their habitats. The project includes a visitor’s center and observatory, collection storage, laboratories, sound studios, the most extensive library of recorded bird songs in the world, and office space for the lab’s comprehensive programs of conservation and “citizen science.”

The design accommodates the extensive program for the world-famous laboratory within the wetland mosaic it created nearly forty years ago from former grazing land. Views of the pond, the home, and the lab’s inspiration, are the lab design’s primary focus for visitors and scientists.

The architects made every effort to minimize the disturbance of wetlands and keep the building in scale with its surroundings. The building, adjacent roads, parking, and trails for the project were located on the site to be least disruptive to the wetlands. The wetland sensitivity generated the somewhat unusual plan configuration of the building, particularly on its north side, where its diagonal shape directly follows the wetland boundary.

Kirby Math and Science Center Addition

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ

30,000 SF

The F. M. Kirby Math and Science Center frames one of the three significant greens on the famous Olmstead-designed prep school campus. The entrance incorporates “science on display” within an atrium that ties Flagpole Green to the football stadium. The student and faculty lounges, academic departments, and shared teaching spaces are arranged along a wide, bright, cross-axial corridor that connects to the existing computer science facility.

Fourteen years later, the school wished to add a wing to the Science Center to replace the aging Kirby Math Building. The two-story, 20,000-square-foot addition fulfilled the school’s STEM objectives by adding new classrooms and creating a learning commons that unify the interdisciplinary curriculum-based programs. The building materials used for the expansion continue the patterned brick, cast stone, and zinc used in the original Kirby Science Center.

Peddie School Athletic Center

HIGHTSTOWN, NJ

125,000 SF

The Ian H. Graham Athletic Center was completed in 1975 and reached its functional obsolescence in meeting safety and competitive athletic standards. A $40 million renovation called for a new 35-meter pool and natatorium addition, repurposing the existing pool volume as a weight training and fitness center, updated locker room facilities, and completely new HVAC and life safety systems, two new turf fields, and a new entrance. Hillier devised a phased approach to the project in response to the program’s academic schedule.

The design strategy places the natatorium at the far end of the existing field house, closer to the entry road. Between the new building and the existing one, a two-level concourse connects and distributes athletes and spectators on their respective levels. The latest addition serves as a model in green design with a double wall that captures solar energy for reuse in heating the pool. The expansive roof surface is covered with photovoltaic panels, where the energy surplus is sold back to the grid.

Solebury School Athletic Center

SOLEBURY TOWNSHIP, PA

25,000 SF

The Solebury School, a private coed boarding and day school for grades seven through twelve, occupies a 99-acre farm near the banks of the Delaware River. Hillier helped Solebury School develop its campus master plan to preserve the natural landscape by strategically placing future buildings and parking. After designing the Solebury School Abbe Science Center, the next project was a new Athletic Center and playing fields. The building program included a full-size basketball court, wrestling room, weight training, dance/aerobics room, locker rooms, laundry, public restrooms, offices, and a food concession/snack bar.

Siting the gym, playing fields, and parking area required careful consideration of the landscape. An analysis of topography and soil conditions was undertaken to preserve natural wetlands and watercourses. Set apart from the nuclear campus, the site design foregrounds the building on two sides with playing fields and a gently rolling meadow. The gym’s west-facing entrance, located at the intersection of two primary pedestrian paths, faces toward the heart of the campus.

Tower Health Executive Offices

READING, PA

18,835 SF

Tower Health, a leading-edge regional healthcare system, leased the Vanity Fair Campus Outlet (former Berkshire Knitting Mills) in West Reading, PA, to relocate their Executive Team.

The architect and consulting partners sought a new image for the company.

Studio Hillier designed a new entrance pavilion and a metal rainscreen accent tower with the company’s logo updating Tower Health’s publicfacing exterior.

The fourth floor, which spans 18,835 square feet, was renovated to house the executive offices, as well as a board room, conference room, reception, living room, and kitchen.

Studio Hillier implemented many design attributes to represent the forward-thinking mission of the company. These include modern furniture, sustainable materials, Topakustik panels with micro laser perforations, recessed and cove lighting, gradiated fritted glass panels at corridors, discreet lighting with custom glass, and a blue accent wall featuring the company logo at the reception area.

Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center

PRINCETON, NJ 611,000 SF

Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center, formerly known as the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro (UMCPP), is a 355-bed, nonprofit, acute-care hospital. Though often perceived as a community hospital, its services extend regionally. Hillier Architecture provided feasibility studies for UMCPP’s relocation onto a new green-field site.

Evidence-based design, which links the quality of the hospital environment to patient healing and recovery rates, is at the heart of the plan for the new hospital. From the abundant, natural light to spacious and flexible operating rooms to all-private patient rooms designed to reduce falls and minimize the risk of infection, every aspect of the hospital’s design conveys a healing and welcoming atmosphere for patients, their families, and hospital staff.

The hospital’s sustainable design includes many energy and conservation innovations to make it one of the most environmentally advanced hospitals in the nation. The building is configured on an east-west orientation relative to the site to maximize the use of natural light while controlling solar heat gain. On the façade, a sunlight-regulating exterior screen significantly reduces the energy required for heating and cooling.

Additional features include a chilled water thermal storage system and environmental controls for lighting and temperature; the site’s landscaping also features indigenous plants.

University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ Hospital Cancer Center

NEWARK, NJ 200,000 SF

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now part of Rutgers University) retained Hillier to design a new 214,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art comprehensive Cancer Center in Newark. The Cancer Center includes research, clinical, administrative, and support spaces. The research space includes wet laboratories, a lab support space, and a vivarium.

This facility incorporates the latest in technological research approaches with flexible and efficient laboratory workspace and houses outpatient treatment areas for cancer patients and sophisticated cancer research laboratories. The design intends to have cancer research on display, assuring patients that future cures and current treatments are integrated into one building.

The Cancer Center complements its surrounding area while creating a solid presence at the campus perimeter. This location provides convenient access to existing radiation oncology, animal research, and medical education facilities. Hillier assisted UMDNJ in successfully applying for and receiving millions of dollars for research space funding from the National Institutes of Health.

The building’s striking exterior wraps an interior focused on patient experience and amenities, including a community education resource center and healing garden. An open atrium infuses healing and research spaces throughout the building with copious daylight.

Princeton Public Library

PRINCETON, NJ

58,000 SF

Designed in concert with the diverse community it serves, the 58,000-gross-square-foot Princeton Public Library has become, in the words of its director, “a community agora for the new millennium.”

At three stories, the building is both monumental in scale and openly welcoming. A large glass “porch” and playful glass staircase create a lively “see and be seen” theatricality along the main street, while quiet spaces and reading nooks are secluded throughout the building. Materials are attractively “merchandised” through custom displays, lighting, and graphics forming interior landscapes that invite browsing and inspire exploration for every user level. Children are uniquely given “pride of place” on the third floor, including a tower room, story center, and unique outdoor garden terrace.

Sprinkled throughout the building’s public spaces, which include a large community room, café, two working fireplaces, a technology center, and a variety of meeting and lounging spaces, the library exhibits breathtaking artwork by world-class artists commissioned for the building. The Princeton Public Library has become the heart of downtown Princeton, fulfilling the vision of civic leaders, city residents, architects, and the library staff.

Irving Convention Center

IRVING, TX

275,000 SF

With few exceptions, the north Texas landscape is flat, hot, and braided by massive concrete highways. Caught in the vortex is Las Colinas, a 12,000-acre mixed-use development, where one enters their office though a darkened garage and glides from auto to elevator without so much as a whiff of grass cuttings. Sidewalks are scarce to nonexistent, proof that architecture has the irreducible capacity to cleave the human population from nature.

The convention center is a counter proposal to the culture of containment that has proliferated in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Convention goers and meeting attendees discover the antidote in the nonprogrammed space that constructs a set of outdoor experiences in the form of ramps, stairs, and expansive roof terraces in plain air. The stramp (stair ramp) opens a dialogue of free and independent movement that we associate with civic space. These unprogrammed spaces invite the chance, spontaneous encounters where people are most likely to engage each other.

The project is LEED certified for its integration of sustainable principles and generative design.

Urban Trifecta

PRINCETON, NJ

10,000 SF

Studio Hillier identified an opportunity to transform a warehouse/ garage on Witherspoon Street in downtown Princeton into a storefront architectural studio. The studio is flanked on either side by a residentialturned-commercial property that was also in need of revitalization. Studio Hillier sought to further enhance the surrounding neighborhood and community by restoring life to the buildings and the street.

The comprehensive plan to integrate retail, residential, and office space was developed through several meetings with the Witherspoon-Jackson Community. By engaging with residents and community leaders from the beginning of the design process, valuable and helpful information was offered and incorporated into the design.

In addition to the 6,600-square-foot warehouse transformed into an architectural studio, the two adjacent properties were renovated into 2,000 square feet of retail on the ground floor and 2,000 square feet of residential space above. Four apartment units were created, two meeting the affordable housing requirements.

Synygy World Headquarters

CHESTER, PA

130,000 SF

Synygy selected Hillier to transform a massive industrial-age power station into Synygy’s new world headquarters. The award-winning project helped the company set the benchmark for industry leadership, corporate responsibility, and community involvement.

Named the “Best Adaptive Reuse Project of the Year” in 2006 by the International Design Association, Philadelphia City Center Chapter, Hillier’s transformation of the aging power station was also honored by the Philadelphia Preservation Alliance and received the 2006 Commonwealth Design Award from 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania.

The original power station was a monument to the production and marketing of electricity in the early 20th century, featuring advances in power generation and industrial construction. Accommodating modern technology and enabling a design that would facilitate future growth first required removing much of the equipment from the past.

The Turbine Hall, with its 100-foot vaulted ceiling, now incorporates a data center, cafeteria, and conference center housed within two new freestanding structures, whose roofs serve as a plaza, an open patio, and a multi-functional theater/trade show area. Some equipment, however, was preserved; the old power station’s control room was preserved as the executive conference room.

Becton Dickinson Campus Center

FRANKLIN LAKES, NJ

35,000 SF

The chosen site for the campus center on the Becton Dickinson corporate campus was the main ceremonial lawn framed by the two massive masonry office buildings. The CEO imagined a new campus center as the virtual knot that would join the two stand-alone office buildings and unify the campus’s executive management and technical staff, becoming the symbol of a new, unified collaborative workforce. The campus center facility bridges and blurs the boundaries between building/landscape, indoor/outdoor, roof/earth, and the two local business cultures of management/production.

Sustainable design was elemental in the campus center’s plan, which features a vegetative roof, and the site design. The reconstituted lawn reduces storm water run-off, minimizes below-grade structures and piping, and eliminates heat islands.

single family

River Road Residence

Studio Hillier was commissioned to create a single-family home overlooking the Delaware River that would make the most of its surroundings while satisfying the owner’s needs for their family and art collection. The new house was required to be entirely above the 500year flood level, and zoning disallowed any new construction on the ground level beyond the thirty-foot-by-30-foot footprint of the existing cottage since removed.

As a result, the entire residence, supported by three fourteen-foot-high Vierendeel trusses, is lifted above the flood level and cantilevered over a concrete pedestal occupying the footprint of the original cottage. This poured concrete base contains a garage for three cars and a two-story high-entrance foyer with a river view. In the event of a flood, vents open to allow water to pass through these spaces.

Conceived as a floating box alongside the Delaware River, the house experiences radical fluctuations in its environment in tandem with the river’s ever-changing microclimate. Unique combinations of air temperature, water temperature, humidity, wind speed, and daylight create a fluid dialogue between the home and its surroundings. Spring mornings, for example, are clear, with bright, warm sunlight, while fall mornings are usually foggy, with cooler-toned light. However, daily and hourly changes in the river allow occupants to experience a myriad of its conditions.

Hillier designed a crisp and clean single-family residence along the edge of a steeply sloping bluff overlooking the Delaware River. The entire length of the north elevation is comprised of floor-to-ceiling glass to take advantage of the river views. On southern and western exposures, the home is sheltered from the sun with stone walls, deep overhangs, and a cantilevered canopy near the entry, nestled below a sod roof.

The central pavilion wraps the living, dining, and kitchen areas. Sheathed with glass on all four sides, it rises on eight steel columns to a wafer-thin roof line and deep overhangs. Adjoining the pavilion on one side is a pivotal point of the residence—the greeting room. Encased in zinc, this conical room incorporates fireplace flues into its sculpted shape. Twisting outward from this space is the office and master bedroom wing, including an indoor lap pool and exercise area. Between the sloping zinc roof of the pool and the master suite is a skylit gallery and dressing area.
