from the head of school “From you, I receive. To you, I give.” Having worked at Crossroads for more than three decades, I’ve probably heard these words sung thousands of times at our Elementary School Gatherings. And yet they never fail to resonate with me. Crossroads is a place where we all give of our best selves and benefit from the gifts of others. In acts large and small, it is this reciprocal caring that gives our School its uniquely nurturing environment. This 2013-14 Annual Report reflects that culture of generosity, which allows us to provide students with the exceptional education that all children deserve. We are especially proud of the new Science Education & Research Facility—now under construction and expected to be completed next summer. The facility demonstrates our commitment to an education rooted in STEAM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. From its founding, Crossroads has provided a rich curriculum in both the arts and sciences, even if the latter is occasionally overshadowed by the former. If you peek into our classrooms, you might see Elementary School students exploring renewable energy, Middle Schoolers building math-based board games embedded with QR codes or Upper Schoolers conducting independent research on topics such as the impact of polyethylene plastic on ocean microbial ecology.
As a school that encourages thoughtful inquiry and critical thinking, it’s no wonder that you can find our alumni working at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory; Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems; and as founders of tech companies that are revolutionizing the ways we connect. Some of these alumni returned to campus in February to judge the Middle School Science Fair, encouraging and inspiring a new generation of students to dream big. Exemplary programs in arts and sciences don’t just happen by themselves. They are the product of the creative genius of our former and current teachers who have built and continue to refine our curriculum. And they are supported by the strong spirit of altruism that is embodied in the unwavering dedication, volunteerism and philanthropy of our parents, trustees, faculty, staff, grandparents and alumni. “Together, we share. And from this, we live.” To all of you, thank you for sharing so generously to make Crossroads the extraordinary place that it is. With much affection and appreciation,
Bob Riddle, Head of School

* We are all gratified to participate in the School’s continual innovation.
from the board chair One of the many fulfilling rewards of serving on Crossroads’ board of trustees is supporting the School’s development. As a forward-thinking institution, Crossroads has championed progressive education since it opened in 1971, when roughly 30 students were taught out of three rooms. Since then, the School has grown in size and in the scope of academic and extracurricular offerings, while remaining true to our founding principles. Crossroads’ commitment to innovation is no more clearly demonstrated than in our new science building, which is now taking shape. This dramatic step in the redevelopment of our beloved campus will create learning facilities worthy of our students and
faculty. As such, the building supports the School’s longstanding mission to offer dynamic education to students, a mission carried out by our outstanding teachers. At the same time that we enhance our campus and curriculum, the Annual Fund continues to help build our financial aid capacity to create an economically diverse student body. Crossroads’ ability to attract and keep top teachers—at every level—is also made possible by generous donations to the Annual Fund, established to support all areas of excellence in education beyond what tuition can cover. The board is proud to support these and other efforts that enable the School to keep building upon its success.

from the parent association The Crossroads Parent Association is like a beautiful, colorful jigsaw puzzle. Each and every parent who volunteers during the year is an integral piece of that puzzle as they discover where they can best contribute and connect with others who share their passion for the School. We want to thank everyone who volunteered last year for your boundless energy and graciousness! Volunteer Opportunities Thank you to the parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents and friends who have so generously donated their time and talents to Crossroads School. Volunteers have served as presidents, vice presidents, treasurers, grade level reps, room parents, bakers and docents, and participated in the K-12 Spring Fundraiser, Alley Party, Annual Fund, Alumni Council, Mailings, Crossroads K-12 Parent Councils (CPC), Appreciation Committee, Community Service, Elementary School Book Swap, Library, School Lunch, Art Room, Authors Program, Community Art, Dance, Drama, Music, Science, Spanish, Hospitality, Athletics, Classical Languages, Visual Arts and Good Neighbor Committees. 4 ANNUAL report 2013-14
Despite everybody’s busy schedules, volunteering at Crossroads is a way for us to stay actively involved in our children’s lives. It lets us demonstrate the importance of education and model the value of community engagement. There are an infinite number of ways to contribute, from working a shift at the Alley Party to helping in the library to serving as a grade level rep. Another great opportunity is to volunteer in support of our Annual Fund and help get the word out about this important fundraiser, which enables the School to attract top teachers and boost our financial aid budget. 2013-14 Parent Association Presidents Carly Friedberg, Elementary School Marci Dinkin, Middle School Melanie Handelsman, Upper School
When we pitch in as party planners, event staffers and fundraisers, we allow the School to allocate its resources toward our children’s education. It’s also a chance to make new friends while having a positive impact on the School. And the benefits don’t stop there. As parents, there’s never enough time to accomplish everything on our endless to-do lists. And yet the most important gift we can give to our children is our time. Taking part in their Crossroads experience gives us an opportunity to connect with our kids and our community as little else can. As Elementary School parent Alicia Celmer—who co-chaired the wildly successful Alchemy spring fundraiser—expressed so beautifully, “If you haven’t volunteered yet, you don’t know what you’re missing. I get so much back in terms of personal growth and friendships. What the parent community brings to the School is priceless.” Thank you again to all of the parent volunteers who supported the Parent Association. We had an amazing year and are so thrilled to have had the opportunity to be pieces of the incredible 2013-14 Crossroads Parent Association puzzle.

The Alley has always been the bustling hub of the 21st Street Campus, but perhaps never more so than now. Since the ceremonial groundbreaking on Feb. 9, 2014, construction crews have been busy transforming a corner of the Alley into what will be Crossroads’ new Science Education & Research Facility for the Middle and Upper school science programs. The three-story, 25,000-square-foot facility in the southwest corner of the 21st Street Campus was designed for maximum sustainability by the architecture firm Frederick Fisher and Partners. It will promote hands-on learning and independent research through its 15 classrooms/laboratories. These include an outdoor living laboratory classroom, and labs specifically for life sciences; physical science; and engineering and design. The building will include a Monarch butterfly habitat with a rooftop garden breeding ground and a courtyard butterfly garden. Both are designed to help restore the Monarch butterfly population by providing a protected habitat to nourish the Monarch through the larval and butterfly stages.
The building itself will be a tool for the teaching of science and sustainability. Solar panels embedded in the glass walls will not only generate energy, but also demonstrate the science of photovoltaics. The surface of the concrete walls of the Special Projects Pavilion will be embedded with rocks, fossils and petrified wood in horizontal bands. Several of these rock layers have been designed by students from all three divisions. Even the sculpture above the living laboratory—a hyperbolic paraboloid designed by the renowned artist Ned Kahn—will demonstrate how the building interacts with its natural environment through movable panels that reveal the patterns of the wind. Although the building won’t officially open until the summer of 2015, it’s already serving as a learning opportunity. Two new clubs and a Middle School Options course are giving students an in-depth understanding of the architecture, planning, construction, interior design and landscaping of the facility.

A Crossroads initiative engages young minds at Title I schools.
sharing the joys of science Every Tuesday during the school year, P.S. Science delivers 90 minutes of hands-on science instruction to 765 first- through third-grade students at three Title I schools in Los Angeles County. During the 2013-14 school year, McKinley Elementary School in Santa Monica became the third school to receive the P.S. Science program, joining P.S. Science partners William Green Elementary School in Lawndale and Saint Anne School, the only nonpublic Title I school in Santa Monica. At the start of the 2014-15 school year, McKinley second-graders were added to the program. P.S. Science grew out of the need—identified by the Crossroads Community Outreach Foundation (CCOF)—to provide underserved students access to quality science instruction, which had been severely curtailed or eliminated in public schools. Because California does not require students to be tested in science until the fifth grade, science is either not being emphasized or even taught in grades one through four. P.S. Science was designed to fill the void in early science education by providing students a foundation of scientific experience and understanding so that they will enter the fifth grade well prepared. Beginning in 2004, the CCOF leadership team spent two years evaluating a variety of programs after P.S. Arts, a highly popular program created at Crossroads

by an earlier incarnation of CCOF, achieved great success and became its own nonprofit foundation. CCOF launched P.S. Science in 2006 to replicate the success of P.S. Arts and fulfill Crossroads School’s commitment to institutional community service. Institutional community service is Crossroads’ pioneering leadership program to share its resources with underserved students in the broader Los Angeles community. Roger Weaver, former headmaster of Crossroads School and president of CCOF, says, “I think the best way for independent schools to engage with the larger community is to become active participants in it and to use their experience and networks to get out into the community and make a difference.” P.S. Science has become an integral part of the schools it serves. The curriculum engages students in active investigations and hands-on exploration led by a CCOF-employed elementary science educator working in partnership with the school’s classroom teacher. P.S. Science provides both the materials and teacher training necessary for the Title I schoolteachers to sustain the science program after approximately three years of working collaboratively with the P.S. Science instructor.
I think the best way for independent schools to engage with the larger community is to become active participants in it and to use their experience and networks to get out into the community and make a difference. –Roger Weaver, President of CCOF
Reactions of students, teachers and principals to P.S. Science are overwhelmingly positive. Program evaluations have shown that participating students experience significant gains in content knowledge and have increased excitement for science. One principal who observed P.S. Science in its first year at her school says it made a huge impact in a short time. “The program provided our youngest students with both meaningful and enjoyable science investigations on a consistent weekly basis,” she says. “In the past, the youngest students received limited science instruction that was often fragmented and dependent upon each individual teacher’s own knowledge and comfort level with teaching science.”
Learn more at xrds.org/psscience.
The impact has been so significant for McKinley Elementary School that it has committed to fully implementing a schoolwide K-5 science program next year and extending the P.S. Science curriculum into the upper grades, complete with in-house teachers and curriculum and the creation of the school’s first dedicated science room. P.S. Science is made possible by foundation, individual and corporate support. This generosity enables P.S. Science to serve students who would not otherwise receive science education and to energize a schoolwide culture of instructional science. CROSSROADS SCHOOL FOR ARTS & SCIENCEs 7
Science and Technology
* In the spring, Crossroads kindergartners and first- and secondgraders explored a new software and accessory system for the iPad that unites the real and virtual worlds. Students played interactive games that require mathreasoning skills, manipulating tangible objects in front of them that simultaneously appear onscreen for a high-tech, hightouch experience.

teach it forward A novel offering in the Crossroads science curriculum is the Middle School Options course “Science Mentors,” which Elementary School science teacher Sasha Moore played a key role in developing 11 years ago. Eighth-graders work with an adviser to develop and implement interactive activities that complement the second-grade science curriculum. As the mentors gain valuable research, presentation and leadership skills, the mentees solidify their knowledge of the material in an engaging way.
The Elementary and Middle schools have STEAM Labs.
Last year, mentors challenged mentees to identify the possible locations of kelp on a map of the ocean, assemble cutouts of animals in order of the food chain and explain the scientific principle behind disappearing hand sanitizer. (It’s evaporation.) Crossroads lifer Lucas Kirby ’15 has fond memories of being both a mentee and mentor. He and Sasha have developed a mentorship program between the new Architecture, Design and Engineering Club and the fourth grade, whose science curriculum focuses on engineering for most of the year. Lucas is eager to bring the fourth-graders to the science building construction site to see engineering concepts come to life. “We want to make sure they know how this building was made, because they’re the ones who will eventually be learning there,” he says. As students hone their crafts as actors, singers, dancers, tech crew members and musicians, they are also taking part in Crossroads’ founding commitment to social justice. The Crossroads Touring Company is another opportunity to develop as citizens of the world, an eye-opening and transformative experience that stays with students long after the final bow.

“It’s a win-win situation,” says Davida Wills Hurwin, Drama Department chair and founder of Tour. “Our audiences witness the power of theater, and Crossroads students have the chance to reach beyond their usual boundaries and engage in their art to communicate with others.”
Tour performs at the Ocean Park Community Center.
Since 1993, Upper School students have taken part in the Crossroads Touring Company, a twice-a-year pilgrimage to the San Francisco Bay Area, where they perform a musical for audiences who might not otherwise have an opportunity to see live theater. Their “stage” changes daily, from the cafeteria of a rehabilitation center to the community room of a hospital to the basketball court of a juvenile detention center. After each performance, the young actors meet and speak with the audience. Many times, this is the part of the experience students will reference when speaking about “the magic of Tour.”
* Last November, Elizabeth Mandell Music Institute (EMMI) students studied the difference between traditionally crafted instruments and those made with recycled landfill materials by child musicians in the impoverished town of Cateura, Paraguay. The EMMI students rehearsed on the recycled instruments for weeks and then performed with them at a fundraiser for a Cateura music program. The cello made from a paint can that was played by Ernie Carbajal ’16 raised $5,600 at the auction.

Engineering and Math
* Every year, the Middle School dedicates five days to math-related projects during Math Week. In 2013, sixth- and eighthgraders created board games, which included the use of QR codes and math equations. Seventhgraders learned the mathematical principles of flight in order to build kites that they then flew on Santa Monica Beach on Pi Day: March 14, or 3.14.

math goes multimedia Kelly Castaneda’s students are used to getting a double dose of their teacher. The Upper School Math Department chair records herself teaching lessons and shows the videos in class, using them like a PowerPoint presentation that she can pause and expand upon. Students may review the videos on their own time, focusing on the aspects of the lesson they found most challenging. “Creating videos gives me the opportunity to produce an artifact that represents my best execution of a lesson—neatly packaged and ready for use at any time,” says Kelly. “This frees me up to focus on the needs of the students rather than the perfect execution of a lesson.”
Kelly is a certified trainer with the GeoGebra Institute of California and utilizes GeoGebra’s free mathematical visualization software to impart difficult lessons to students. She’s begun to record audio of her students as they work through problems, creating videos for other educators that illustrate the learning process from difficult start to triumphant finish.
Elementary School students explore robotics.
Some videos incorporate photographs and other multimedia elements that bring complicated geometry and applied mathematical principles to life. Topics include writing geometrical proofs, constructing a probability tree and assessing the value of an Oakland Raiders quarterback through statistical analysis.

When you give to Crossroads School, you help create an exceptionally rich and balanced learning environment in which students flourish. Here are just a few examples of how your gifts support student growth, both on campus and out in the world.
One in four students at Crossroads receives financial aid, which is the School’s second-largest budgetary expense after salaries. Financial aid provides tuition assistance and may also cover books and technology expenses.
The Middle and Upper schools rolled out a 1:1 laptop program in grades seven through nine for both students and teachers. The program was so successful that it has been expanded to the entire Upper School for the 2014-15 school year.

Professional Development Faculty members engaged in 150 professional development opportunities during the year to enhance their ability to enrich students’ educational experiences. Conference sessions included “Teaching SelfAware Minds,” “Nurturing Resiliency in Youth” and “Strengthening Your Instruction Using iPad Technology.”
Environmental and Outdoor Education
The Athletics Department hired eight additional coaches to support the 585 fifth- through 12th-graders who played on 60 different athletic teams last year. Student-athletes are supported by two full-time and three part-time trainers who oversee their physical health and well-being.
Fourth-graders spent three days and two nights in San Juan Capistrano exploring local ecosystems, observing marine life and learning about the California gold rush. This was just one of 21 overnight EOE trips attended by 749 fourth- through 12th-graders in 2013-14.
All three divisions put on performances, including six dance recitals, eight jazz concerts, nine drama productions and two fifth-grade Shakespeare productions. In January, the Upper School Jazz “A” Band performed at the Panama International Jazz Festival in Panama City.
After visiting various local landmarks, third-grade students hosted a Los Angeles Fair, educating attendees about the city’s history, culture and topography. Middle and Upper school students traveled to Irvine to compete in the California Junior Classical League State Convention, winning numerous individual and group awards.

Annual Giving at Crossroads
Annual Giving at Crossroads is a combination of the Annual Fund and Spring Event Sponsorship, which are recognized here in our Annual Report. Annual Fund At the beginning of each school year, everyone in our community is asked to make a gift to the Annual Fund, commensurate with their financial ability. Gifts of any amount are welcome, and every gift matters. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating a student at Crossroads. The gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating one student for the 2013-14 school year was $4,000. Tuition plus a strong Annual Fund enable the School to provide broad and rich curricular choices; achieve a socio-economically diverse student population; and attract and retain the most talented faculty and staff. Spring Event Sponsorship Each spring, our K-12 Parent Association organizes a special fundraising and community-building event. Crossroads asks our community to support the Spring Event as sponsors, by donating items for the auction/ raffle and by hosting parties for the Party Book. Proceeds directly support important aspects of Crossroads’ operations, such as faculty professional development, the Employee Emergency Fund, campus development and our endowment, along with the Crossroads Community Outreach Foundation.

Thanks to generations of donors, Crossroads has been able to flourish and grow into one of the premier college preparatory schools in the nation. All that our students enjoy today is made possible by the vision and generosity of parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, friends, faculty and staff who believe an investment in our School is a worthy commitment. Cash Gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the full extent of the law and may be made with cash, check or credit card. Corporate Matching Gift Programs can double, triple or quadruple the value of your gift to Crossroads. Companies that have a matching gift program—or their divisions, subsidiaries or affiliates—will often match contributions of spouses, directors or retirees. Please check with your organization’s human resources office to confirm that your employer has a matching gift program and to obtain the relevant forms. Pledges allow the School to count your gift while preparing budgets for the upcoming fiscal year. To make a pledge that will be paid at a later date, please contact the Annual Fund manager. Gifts of Appreciated Stocks, Bonds or Mutual Funds allow donors to deduct the full market value and avoid capital gains tax while benefiting the School. To transfer stocks, bonds or mutual funds, please contact the Annual Fund manager. Planned Gifts provide funding for the future needs of the School, enabling your gift to make a difference now and for generations to come. For information on bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder or lead trusts and other ways to include Crossroads School in your estate plans, please contact the director of development and constituent relations.
