Studio Berg & Kopphoto Studio Berg & Kopphoto Amsterdam, The Netherlands 350 kg | 245 pieces | 365 days Research & Exhibition Project 2009-2012, in progress

The Project The idea for this project was born in 2009, after a visit to a delicatessen shop specializing in high quality candy. The candy production process results in enormous quantities of leftover material: long, whimsical and brightly colored chunks of candy which have to become perfectly shaped sweets. These chunks are simply regarded as waste. When viewed from a different perspective, these pieces of coagulated sugar can just as well be appreciated as coincidental artifacts of an astonishing beauty. They are in fact undiscovered pieces of art. Dominant factors in this project are the characteristics of the material and the artist’s intuition. Techniques and traditions in the candy industry are of marginal importance only. The delicate and fragile translucent materials come in all colors of the rainbow. It seems as if something as ethereal as light is materialized in these pieces of coagulated sugar.

The Design The objects have been photographed and grouped into different typological series. Each of these series bring all sorts of associations to mind - vulnerable and delicate, but also fluent and flamboyantly colourful. One time the images seem coagulated; the next they appear to be torn. The manipulation of the image makes that every series implies a different story. In one of the series the sugar transforms from a coagulated chunk into a flowing array of landscapes. ‘Sweet Coincidence’ can be seen as an installation project on the borderline between two disciplines: landscape architecture and art. “When you look carefully, nothing is self-evident.” Joyce van den Berg & Nina Kopp
