Hello Readers The three wise men had to walk an awfully long way in search of their Messiah around this time of year, 2000 years ago. Nowadays you can find everything to do with Christmas whilst sat in your underpants at the computer. But do you trust everything you read online?

Whether this news has you merrily ho-ho-ho’ing about the house, shouting of salvation from the perils of traditional puzzlers such as ‘what shall I buy Dad that isn’t novelty socks?’ and ‘does anyone really ever eat the Eat Me Dates?’ or muttering “bah-humbug” from your grumpy old armchair, is up to you. We are confident that the many local pubs and restaurants know the key to cooking a good turkey and that our fashion tips can help to keep you trim despite the trimmings.

Owners of Halfpenny Green Vineyards, the Vickers family, are pleased to offer a new element to the visitor experience at the vineyards; an exciting new tour and tasting area and expanded winery. From this winter, visitors on tours will be able to taste award-winning Halfpenny Green wine from within the purpose built new centre whilst watching the winery team hard at work from the new viewing gallery – and, following a busy harvest period this year, there isn’t a better time to book onto a winery and vineyard tour.

Halfpenny Green Vineyards Announces New Tour And Tasting Centre

The expanded winery and tasting centre will transform the vineyards’ wine-making capacity and make the fascinating process of wine making, from the grapes coming in through to the finished bottles, even more accessible for visitors to see. Tours last approximately 1 ½ hours and can include lunch, afternoon tea or dinner depending on your group requirements (minimum of 10 people daytime, 20 people evening, required).

The Local Property Market by Nick Berriman Everyone – well almost everyone – lives somewhere. That is one of the few things that we all have in common. Most people, whether they own or rent the place in which they live are interested in it. Some people are living in a rented flat and hope to buy somewhere. Some who already own a house are hoping to move to somewhere larger, some want to downsize, and some are starting out and are wondering whether to buy or rent and some are happy with what they have got and have no intention of moving. I have to say the final category are very bad for trade and perceived wisdom is that everyone moves every seven years on average! There are so many different circumstances, so many hopes and aspirations and so many people with problems and disappointment who all cross the paths of estate agents on a regular basis. They all look to us to give them wise advice and good counsel so our job goes far beyond just valuing and selling. Should young people move from a rented flat into something which they buy ? Much depends on their possible need for mobility. It is much easier to give notice to a landlord than to sell a property – at least on the type of market we have experienced over the last few years since 2007 when the property market fell off the end. The new government scheme to help first time buyers makes it easier to buy without the need for a prohibitive deposit and gives the chance to put a foot on the property ladder. 08

Different from many other countries we have, for many years, been a property owning democracy. That has been based partly on a wish to be independent and partly from the hope of making money out of a rising market. Once upon a time people bought the property in which they and their family wished to live and where they thought they could be happy. That continued until about 1973 when we had the first price boom. When there is a boom everyone thinks it will last forever but we all now know that is not the case and values can, and do, go up and down. However during the last forty years many people have bought properties not because they wanted to live there but because they thought they could profit from a rise in prices. That has certainly not been the case of late but it is still true to say that in the long term values have always risen. My father’s generation bought their first semi fifty or so years ago for about £2,000 and whatever has happened to values in the last few years that price has still put on about two noughts ! Don’t buy now because you think you can make a profit, but buy because it is a property which will be good for you. Don’t forget the old adage about location, location, location because if you do wish to sell in the future that is vitally important. The old story is if you want to trade up you should do so on a poor market because the price differentials will be smaller and conversely if you want to trade down do so on a good market because the differentials will be larger. That makes financial sense

but our needs or wishes to move do not always coincide with the desired market conditions. There is no doubt that the rental market has been a growth industry during the recent recessed market and there will always be people who are best suited by renting. There has been recent media publicity of some letting agents who have not behaved in a professional manner. You can guess what my advice would be if you want to rent…! Some closing words about the current state of the market. Yes it is much better and yes there is more interest and more activity but no, we have not seen the boom in prices the media are talking about. I think it was Danny Alexander, the First Secretary of the Treasury, who said recently that people talking about a price explosion should get out of London and the south east to see what it is like in the rest of the country. It is true that, rather like the saying that if New York sneezes today we catch a cold tomorrow, London leads our property market and the rest of us eventually follow. However London has become a much more specialised market and I am not sure that is as true as it once was. Having said that the economy is stronger, the employment figures are better and there is more optimism for the future than there has been for a long time. The property market depends on confidence and that is growing so that is a good omen for the future. May I wish all our clients past, present or future the compliments of the season and every good wish for the coming year. wolverhampton west magazine

Advertising Feature Equity income funds have a strong track record for delivering attractive, sustainable income and steady returns over the long term, but they were inevitably impacted by the global banking crisis of recent times.

Maximising Income Opportunities From Your Investments Income is important. It’s an obvious statement. The difficulty is that, in an uncertain world, investment income is hard to find right now. Investors looking for income have faced an increasing challenge ever since the financial crisis broke in 2008. Prudence and vigilance became the order of the day as financial institutions across the globe took extreme measures to protect themselves from global meltdown. Dividends came under pressure, Bond markets were unnerved and commercial property fell from grace. In short, there were – and have been since - few places for income-seekers to turn. Central governments across the world also reacted strongly, tightening monetary policy and forcing interest rates to record lows. Five years on and interest rates in the UK remain almost nonexistent. Consequently, investors wanting to secure an income stream have realised that they must accept some risk by looking beyond traditional cash deposits. History shows that investing in equities, or shares, has provided 10

investors with a better chance of outpacing inflation over the long term versus other asset classes, particularly if the companies are able to increase the dividend payments year after year. And after difficult conditions in 2008 and 2009, it appears that this seems to be happening. The latest data from Capita Registrars Dividend Monitor, January 2013, shows that a total of 437 companies paid a dividend during 2012, a similar number to 2011 and demonstrating further sustainability of corporate earnings and profits. Of the 437 companies, 342 companies increased, reinstated or started paying dividends. This shows the increases and reinstatements outnumbering the cuts and cancellations by 3.3:1. With dividend payouts on the turn, the outlook for equity income funds could also be on the up.

Many equity income funds were heavily exposed to the big banks – not surprising given their history of paying dividends – but the banks’ obligations to rebuild their balance sheets meant their dividend distributions were reduced. In the case of those rescued by the government and UK taxpayers, dividends were suspended indefinitely. Unsurprisingly, payouts remain lower than they used to be; UK listed banks account for just 3.5 per cent of all dividends paid by FTSE100 companies in 2012 compared to 30 per cent in 2007 (Source: Bloomberg and Majedie Asset Management, May 2013). These funds have had time to adjust to the post-financial crisis world but it is worth remembering that not all equity income funds are the same. Some are better for income, while others provide better prospects for total return investors through the reinvestment of dividends. So if it’s income you are after make sure you research and understand the individual fund fully. It is not just UK equity funds that might tempt income seekers. There has been an increase in the demand for overseas equity income funds – although as recently as five or six years ago, an investment manager may have struggled to build a credible global income portfolio. Since then, there has been a significant improvement in the dividend yield of companies across Continental Europe and the Asia-Pacific region in particular as they have moved to accommodate the demands of a global shareholder base. Corporate bond funds, income producers by nature, remain popular, particularly with cautious investors. But the decision on which bond fund to choose is less than clear-cut and those considering the asset class should consider the contrast between the different types. Investment grade corporate bonds suffer at times of inflation wolverhampton west magazine

(as the fixed interest rate means that the real value of the income is eroded over time), while high yield bonds, which pay a higher yield, tend to struggle during a recession (as more companies default). As applies with all asset types, a diversified fixed interest strategy will help investors capture the potential of the wider corporate bond market. Commercial property, another income producing asset, is also

beginning to attract attention again. The real estate sector felt the full effects of the credit crunch and the fall in property values left many investors nursing significant losses. Never had the sector suffered such a sharp decline but history suggests that commercial property has a place in a portfolio for income investors. Its long-term track record is strong, returning 8.51% annual compound growth over the previous 20 years and it offers important diversification

from shares (source: FE Analytics, IPD Index, data to 30 April 2013). Those investing for income need to remember that no one asset class is the panacea. With interest rates likely to remain low for some time to come, a well-diversified, well-managed portfolio which blends different forms of investment remains the most suitable strategy for investors taking a longer-term view of their income needs.

Face-Lift Your Home Ready For Christmas The autumn is a great time to start brightening up the home for Christmas. With the business of summer and holidays past, and Christmas still on the horizon, it is just right to begin looking at where improvements can be made, redecorating commenced, and refurbishing begun. And there really is nothing better for making the dull days brighter and the approach of winter more acceptable. But where do you begin? Start off by having a careful survey of your home. Try looking at each aspect with the eyes of a stranger. Ask yourself if those comforting blemishes you hardly notice, that slightly scruffy carpet, the worn upholstery, the chipped paint and stained wall-coverings, really are the images you want visitors to take away with them? Ask yourself too, if you might not be a whole lot more comfortable in a more comfortable, better decorated environment? Perhaps the decorations are fine but things look a little ‘dingy’? Well a new set of soft furnishings can work miracles. New curtains, matching blinds, nets perhaps, to add that extra layer of luxury and privacy, a fashionable set of pelmets and ties, and even an electrically operated curtain drawing mechanism, can all add to your comfort. Curtains may be bought ready-made, can be made-tomeasure, or you can search amongst the wonderful selection of fabrics available just now and make them up yourself. While you are buying

12

the curtain fabrics, don’t forget, you can have blinds and lampshades, loose covers and cushions, all made up in your own choice of fabric for that ‘all over’ look. And if loose covers are not exactly what you want, a new three-piece suite or couple of settees can lift almost any room right out of the doldrums. What about the kitchen? Is it up to scratch? A brand new layout may or may not be out of the question but, you can make it all look new with tiles or sheet mirror all over the walls, new flooring, new work surfaces, new door and drawer fronts, or just a change of lighting. Does your bathroom really welcome you when you go in? Is it warm and comfortable, or does it set you all a quiver with its chills? Warm up your bathroom with extra heating - special radiator fittings can be bought, though remember all electrical equipment must be professionally fitted. You could fit new floor coverings, and if those tiled walls still make you feel cold, why not replace them with warm-touch, thick vinyls, specially designed for this room? If you are not really comfortable in your bedroom, you really must treat the matter as a priority, you do spend at least a third of your life in there after all. A new bed could make your nights feel better. A new, high tog duvet too will help you sleep in luxurious comfort. If the carpet isn’t all it might be, why not replace it? Like any other room in the house, you can give it a brand new look by adding brand new curtains, matching

scatter cushions, duvet cover, and subdued lighting. And if you feel like really splashing out, why not go for a complete new bedroom fitting? Of course if you need to redecorate, you will find the shops full of wonderful wall coverings, wall, floor and ceiling tiles, paints and varnishes, light fittings and doors. While you are at it, take advantage of the situation and draught-proof all doors and windows, fit additional electric points, and what about a change in heating? Even if your central heating is working very well, an open fire does set a room off and provide that point of extra comfort. The latest heating appliances with open fire effects give you direct heat and a focal point without all the work and mess of solid fuels. While you are at it, why not have a feature fireplace built, or a few lit niches put into the wall, or some other, interesting architectural feature? Almost everything is possible these days if you want to improve the decor of your home. There really is no excuse for not taking advantage of the selection of goods, materials and ideas that are available. And if you haven’t the time or skill to do it all yourself, there are builders, decorators and interior design specialists who will help you make your home into the most elegant and comfortable place you could possibly wish it to be. Beware though, if it’s too good to be in, you may have difficulty getting rid of visiting friends over the festive period!

One Hell Of A Ride Nicki Chapman has gone from working with some of the biggest musicians in the world to becoming one of the nation’s favourite presenters, with a CV that includes Pop Idol, Escape to the Country and her own Radio Two show. Here, the 46-year-old talks about her latest project with the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, her love of horses and her eclectic career. Tell us about the Spanish Riding School live events you are presenting. The Spanish Riding School is a traditional horse riding school from Vienna. It has been going for over 400 years and they specialise in classical dressage. And they are truly wonderful! I’m thrilled they are coming back here and I am so happy to be involved in the show. They have been over to England before, they were here last year, and it was such a huge success, everybody loved it. It’s the first time that the Spanish Riding School have been north, as well, with three dates in Sheffield. And obviously, Yorkshire has a great riding heritage, so it’s wonderful. It’s really exciting! You’re a big fan of the school and of equestrian pursuits in general? Yes I am. The Spanish Riding School really is something to behold, it is a beautiful art form. The horses are full of grace, strength, intelligence and they are beautiful creatures. And the show itself is remarkable. It is an extraordinary display of the classic elements of equestrianism, performed in the Renaissance tradition.

husband has taken his parents and they loved it. You get kids as young as eight and nine there, and they love to watch it. It really is something that the whole family can get involved with. I am honoured to be involved with it. How did you become involved? Going back, I always used to ride, but my riding is much more on an amateur level, I’m not half as talented as these riders. But I loved riding ponies as a child. I was just a ‘get on, kick and go’ type really! Live Nation knew I was a keen horsewoman, and wanted to get an amateur rather than a professional to host it. That’s what I am, a weekend rider, not gifted, but with a passion. So I jumped at the chance. I actually saw them when I was younger; I was fortunate to be taken with my little sister, and I was mesmerised. It was such a spectacle. This is your latest project in such a varied career... It is – who would have thought it? I have been very fortunate. I left school at 16 and went travelling to Australia, and I thought that was going to be my future. I was sure I was going to emigrate. And then fate played its hand: when I was waiting for my visa to be accepted, I got a job in the music industry. Fast-forward 20 marvellous years working with some of the world’s top talent, with experiences that I could never have thought that would happen to me, and the door opened into presenting. So it is diverse. But I’ve fallen into a job that I love.

Is Pop Idol the highlight of all that? That’s a really good question. It was definitely life-changing. If it wasn’t for Pop Idol being so successful, I wouldn’t be here talking to you now. But I have done some extraordinary things in my career and met extraordinary people. If it wasn’t for the artists I worked with, I wouldn’t have been on Pop Idol. If it wasn’t for Pop Idol, I wouldn’t have been a presenter. Like everybody in business, you have to maintain those high standards. I’m very aware of that, and I think 20 years in the music industry was good practice for that, but the Spanish Riding School of Vienna is another absolute highlight – it’s right up there, and I hope people come along to enjoy the spectacle.

The Lipizzan horses are the finest examples of a classical dressage movement that is known as haute ecole, which is beautiful. Haute ecole is all about the control that the horses show, the way they jump and move. If you ride, you will appreciate how amazing the horses and riders are. But it isn’t just for people who like riding – anybody can enjoy it. It is for people who like to see extremely talented, proper performers. My 18

that would link with our kitchen/ dining space and relaxation area. “We really liked the contemporary style that’s created in orangeries, with features like the roof and downlights around the internal soffits which offer a modern look.

orangery, because we favoured the contemporary look they offered.

Located on Aldersley Road, Wolverhampton the showroom has on display a Cream Orangery with Bi-Folding Doors. For visiting customers it is clear to see the quality of the products on display; in fact there are both Aluminium and the very best Upvc Bi-Folding Doors for customers to compare. In addition, there are specialist windows on display such as the Flush Traditional Timber effect Residence Nine Window, as well as Vertical sliding Sash windows, together with some of the Solidor range including French Doors in Duck Egg Blue and Chartwell Green.

“Seeing this orangery in the flesh made us realise that we were definitely making the right choice. I loved it so much that I decided to go for the same colours when I ordered ours, because the ‘flat cream’ would tie-in well with our property’s existing windows and render.

“We had heard that Tettenhall Windows specialised in orangeries, so we decided to pay a visit to their showroom. From there we were able to get a real idea of what to expect from an orangery as we looked at the showroom’s display model that was finished in ‘flat cream’ UPVC and complete with Bi-Folding Doors.

“We were already keen to opt for Bi-folding Doors and seeing them in the showroom confirmed that they were definitely right for us. “We made an appointment with the team at Tettenhall Windows for a site visit, and with their help we worked out the best size and design

“Creating plenty of light and having the option to open-up our orangery when we’re entertaining in the summer was important to us, that’s why we chose to have a ‘double lantern’ arrangement and two sets of Bi-Folding doors fitted. For all year round ventilation, we decided on four electric opening roof vents with thermostatic control. Rain sensors were to be added to our roof lanterns and wired up to a wall switch, making them easy to operate and control. “The project got underway quickly; once the survey had been completed and a few adjustments made, the blueprint was finalised and a ‘base plan’ drawn-up, allowing for the building work to commence. “Once the base and brickwork had been completed the BiFolding doors were fitted and the roof added. When everything was made watertight the internal plastering and electrics could be completed. There was only minor issues along the way, which is to be expected on a project this size, but as the work neared completion we were delighted with the results and thrilled with the final look. “We are thoroughly enjoying our new modern, bright and contemporary living space every single day and we’re grateful to Tettenhall Windows for the excellent service they provided.” For a free no obligation quote please call Tettenhall Windows on 01902 754114, 128 Aldersley Road, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton WV6 9LZ.

The company wanted to offer customers a little inspiration to the range of possibilities that colours can give to your property to make it stand out and that is reflected in their showroom products. Pop in and have a look around to see if we can fire your imagination. When Carol and Giuseppe decided that their tired-looking extension needed updating, they contacted Tettenhall Windows: “Our conservatory had been looking very old and dated, so we decided that we needed to replace it. Recipe Of The Month

Recipe provided by Wayne - Personal Chef Major Cuisine

Christmas Cracker filled with Vegetable Mince Meat With Christmas weeks away it’s time to think baking, with many different cakes and bakes around the world to celebrate from Bûche de Noël of France to Italian Panettone, all of which use combinations of ingredients like dried vine fruits, nuts, candied peel, spices and alcohol. The three English versions are Christmas pudding, in which traditionally a small coin was inserted into the pudding and was good fortune for the person

who received it, the second was a moist fruit cake, often made with brandy or rum more of which can be poured over prior to covering in marzipan and then decorated with icing holly and ribbons. The third was a mince pie originally filled with chopped meat but because meat was expensive it was bulked out with chopped dried fruits and eventually the meat component disappeared leaving only the suet and cheaper ingredients.

Codsall Cars Ltd: Driving Towards New Success “We can also do text back and ring back. The text back allows a message to be sent to the passenger with the vehicle registration, driver name and fare.” So long gone are the days of wondering if you are getting into the wrong taxi: “With this system there is no chance of getting into the wrong vehicle or an unlicensed vehicle.” Also on the agenda is a thorough update and replacement programme for all existing vehicles at the firm. “We are looking to the future and are putting new vehicles on all the time to replace the existing tired old ones.”

Local landmark taxi company, Codsall Cars Ltd, is entering an exciting new phase of its ten year history.

But despite all this change some things remain reassuringly the same.

The business became a limited company in July 2013 - when the new directors took over - and already big change is underway. Office Manager, Mell Maley, explains: “So far we have installed new phone lines and a computerised booking system, which enables us to track our cars, day or night.

“We would like to thank all of our customers - both old and new - for sticking with the company and continuing to use us through what has been quite a difficult transition. “As ever our main priority is to continue to serve the local community with their transport needs.”

And now the company needs you to help complete the final part of its transformation, as a local recruitment drive is underway in order to fill positions for day and night drivers, as well as phone staff.

A R E Y O U l os i n g

yo u r mind ? But how often are we really living in the present moment? Not often, that’s for sure.

Your mind is busy thinking all day and dreaming all night, you can’t stop it doing what it does best, but you can give it some respite.

It’s time to rest your mind. And mindfulness is the answer to stopping the constant metal chitter chatter that exhausts us.

I recently enjoyed a lovely family holiday to Fuerteventura. A week to relax in the sun, enjoy time together after a very busy year. Despite the sun, sea and sangria my mind was busy racing with all sorts of random thoughts and the constant mental chitter chatter was exhausting me! I found myself worrying about work projects I needed to complete, people I needed to contact when I got home, the kids’ school work, the broken loo seat that needed replacing and endless other unimportant stuff. I couldn’t switch off and it was frustrating me! I found that it took almost five days before my mind and body started to wind down. By that time, it was time to pack up and come home.

Thinking seems to be our default setting. It’s pretty hard to stop! Being able to think has great advantages as it helps us function and live our lives. But it’s not always an un-mitigating blessing. Our thoughts can trap us if we’re not careful. If you find yourself thinking too much about the past you can wind up feeling regretful, sad and guilty. If you find yourself thinking too much about the future you can wind up feeling anxious, fearful and restless. Not a great mixed bag of emotions to be dealing with day in and day out. What exists between past and future is the present moment and this is where we are at our happiest. 32

This is a simple skill we can learn just like any other new skill. The benefits are truly amazing. Being mindful helps you break free from all those unhelpful thoughts and thinking patterns. But it also keeps you grounded; it reduces stress and increases your focus. But overall it puts you in touch with yourself and increases your enjoyment of life.

Now who doesn’t want that! My coaching and mentoring business is all about setting goals and planning for the future, I believe this is essential if we want to move our life forward and achieve success, but we also don’t want to miss actually living our life in the process! If we are always waiting for some future event to happen in order to feel happy or fulfilled we are not really living and experiencing life as we should. So if like me, you find that you spend too much time either living in the past or the future here are just three ways to become more mindful and start living in the present moment.

Find your flow. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a psychologist from the University of Chicago, studied thousands of people for more than 30 years to discover what makes our lives meaningful and satisfying. From his research he wrote a book called Flow - which he describes as a narrowing of attention, a sense of being absorbed, and a feeling of transcendence and being present. When you’re in the flow you are totally in the present moment. Any activity can lead to flow, playing a game, listening to music, walking the dog but it must be an activity that you love. Ask yourself: What puts me in a state of flow? Now think about

how you can inject more flow time into your daily life from taking a daily walk, joining a yoga class or maybe starting a new hobby. The more you flow the more present you’ll be.

Slow down. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty good at multitasking. I often find myself juggling lots of tasks all at the same time; cooking dinner, replying to emails, helping the kids with their homework. I’m always focusing on the future. But the truth is, nothing really gets my fullundivided attention. I jump from one thing to the next and back again. It’s exhausting! I spend my day thinking about what’s next. It’s essential that we slow down (albeit a tiny bit) and give whatever we’re doing 100% of our attention. If we’re chopping the vegetables, we’re focusing on chopping the vegetables. If we’re playing with the kids, we’re focusing on playing with the kids. If we’re having a conversation with someone, we’re focusing on our conversation. This simple act of single tasking will not only help you get more done, but you’ll be totally in the moment and enjoy each task far more.

Breathe it in! Being aware of your breathing is the simplest thing you can do at any given moment to put you back in the present moment. Breathing does not happen in the past or the future, it happens in the now! So when you find your mind mulling over past events or racing off into the future, just breathe and you’ll be back in the present moment again. This is mindfulness. This is it. You’re right here. Breathe. Remember, life is happening right now: being mindful will help you let go of all those thought patterns that do not serve you and help you to enjoy each moment so life doesn’t pass you by. TGF - Total Glass Fittings Your Architectural Hardware Specialist Modern and contemporary design is defined by the use of glass, so there’s no better way to bring your home into the 21st century than with the addition of a striking glass feature. Since 2009 Total Glass Fittings has been leading the way in the architectural hardware industry, bringing quality and innovative fittings to their customers. From their new location - Suite 42, Hilton Hall - and via their website, the company continues to equip homeowners, businesses and those in the commercial sector with all of the essential parts they’ll need to create amazing, sophisticated and modern designs in glass. THE BEST FOR LESS Utilising their many years of experience in the trade, the TGF team source superior products from top German and UK manufacturers at value-for-money prices and pass on the savings to their clients; making the installation of glass fittings totally affordable. Working directly with homeowners, architects, interior designers and builders, the TGF team aid in the design and planning of all manner of installations by supplying detailed instruction and technical drawings with all of the fittings they sell. It’s thanks to this service that clients require only a little DIY knowledge to be able to construct their chosen product. But, for those who’d 40

prefer the item to be assembled for them, TGF will employ one of their handpicked tradesmen to undertake the work, within a 50 mile radius. TRANSFORM YOUR HOME The business realises the immense benefits that the installation of glass can have, from not only a visual point of view but on a practical level too. Both modest and large homes can be transformed: renovate existing staircases to convert them to glass; open up small and gloomy hallways to give a light, bright finish which serves to create the illusion of space. Bathrooms are quickly brought up-to-date when equipped with a frameless shower screen or walk-in enclosure. Fitting glass doors in large open areas serves to offer a practical solution to costly heating bills and noise issues, whilst still maintaining the openplan feel of all manner of domestic and commercial environments. In fact, churches, schools, colleges and office buildings have all benefited from TGF’s installations. The company works hard to cater for all design ideas and meets the needs of their clients by offering a bespoke service and products which are tailor-made for the job.

Glass can also be used to safeguard children and pets from danger around outside or indoor swimming pools. The installation of screens and safety gates offers much-needed peace of mind for home and business owners alike. TGF also sell the products you’ll need to keep your glass and stainless steel looking its best, like the 6K Hydrophobic Surface Protection System, which offers 3 years of complete protection. Delivering the best levels of customer service is a high priority at TGF, that’s why the company offers free consultations and will always spend time with their customers to provide them with all the help and advice they need. Working hard to keep thoroughly up-to-date with the latest products in glass fittings from around the world, the business ensures that their clients benefit from the latest technology. It’s no surprise then, that customers return time and time again.

INSIDE AND OUT And what’s more, TGF’s fittings aren’t just for use indoors: Glass Canopy Systems serve to protect doorways and communal areas. Combining style with practicality, they bring an up-to-date look to architecture from any era. wolverhampton west magazine

Creating Stylish Gardens For Individual Lifestyles By Andi Way from Boningale Garden Creations There’s no need to compromise on garden style when it becomes too much to maintain, as we recently proved with retiree Keith, who lives in a traditional three-bedroom semi-detached home in Compton, Wolverhampton. He had always enjoyed his large garden, but the large lawn and mature borders simply became too difficult for him to look after when he retired. He no longer wanted the burden of regular lawn mowing, so we created a stylish space that would suit his lifestyle, and enable him to enjoy his garden for years to come and not worry about the maintenance. The lawn was removed and replaced with a sweeping consolidated gravel

area that is firm to walk on but is free draining and hard wearing. Hard lines on the borders were re-shaped so that they now feature dramatic, sweeping curves that make full use of the shape of the garden. A new planting scheme was also implemented, and a range of carefully selected shrubs and plants were put in the newly shaped borders, bringing them to life once more. Finally, his favourite bench was positioned in a sunny spot,

creating a paved area that mirrors the curves of the borders, and a pergola arch installed to give the garden interest and a focal point. Keith said: “It’s a truly wonderful garden and I love sitting on the bench and taking in all the design. The fact that I don’t have to think about mowing the lawn again is great, too. Andi and the team really listened carefully to what I wanted and came up with some very creative ideas. I couldn’t be happier with what they did.”

Add Living Colour To Christmas This Year November and December are fast approaching and it’s time to make sure that anything tender has been covered up or taken inside to protect them against any severe weather. Always protect Geraniums and Fuschsias over winter, put them where they have some light and heat – never in a dark and cold garage.

Why not give a living present this Christmas, there’s plenty of brightly coloured indoor plants such as Azaleas, Begonias and Cyclamen that will lift the winter gloom, or for a long-lasting present choose a shrub such as Holly, Skimmia or Leucothoe, these will all give colour in the drabbest months. One of the best Christmas plants is the Poinsettia. It gives instant colour in a room. Always buy from a reputable supplier – never from the street or supermarket. They like good light during the day and a warm room at all times. Only water when the soil is dry and never stand in water for longer than 10 minutes.

Frost fleece or fleece bags are handy to put over tender plants such as Phormiums, Cordylines, Hebe and Tree Ferns once the frosts arrive. Cover pools with netting before the leaves drop and make a mess. Reduce stem lengths on roses to prevent them rocking and loosening in the winds. Once cleaned up borders can be mulched with compost, well rotted manure or bark. Check heaters in greenhouses to avoid any last minute panic. Drain down hosepipes and water features that won’t be used again until next spring, to prevent damage by frosts. From the end of November, freshly cut Christmas trees will be ready for you to buy. When

Tips are provided by Ann Winwood from Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton

you get your tree home, put it in a stand or pot that can be kept moist, as warm temperatures and dry air inside make the tree absorb water very rapidly. Keep away from hot radiators, open fires and TV sets. This also applies to rooted trees, especially if you’re planning on planting it in the garden after Christmas. Don’t forget the birds this autumn/ winter – feed daily, and remember that once it freezes, birds still need a supply of fresh water. Merry Christmas and a happy and Healthy 2014 to you all.

Water pot plants less than you would during the summer, and stop feeding. Empty any water from saucers after 15 minutes. Cyclamen and Azaleas are ideal for the cooler living room, as long as they have good light. Begonias, Kalanchoe and most foliage plants prefer warmer conditions. If plants are close to windows, remove them at night to prevent chilling. If the weather is mild you can still plant winter bedding in pots and borders. Pansies will give colour throughout the winter months unless it’s very cold and even then they’ll spring back up after a few mild days. Tulips can still be planted if you haven’t already done so. 46

Farmer & Friends Kitchen Award Winners

and veg comes from Birmingham Wholesale Markets through Sam, our local supplier in Perton.” It’s a far cry from the office and gardens where Ian and Daren previously cut their cloth “We’ve learned so much in such a short space of time and we’ve got so much more to learn. We take everything on board that customers say and do, that’s also very important to us. And to receive this national award after just six months is testament to everyone associated with the business including our staff, suppliers and customers. They’ve all played a part in getting us to where we are now in such a short space of time and we appreciate it very much.”

“If someone would have said that we would be picking up awards in our first six months, we would have laughed at them...” Commented Ian, the new owner of the former New Vine Cafe at the Garden Village in Shipley, who, along with his business partner Daren, have been awarded a Three Cup Accreditation (Excellent Outlet) for beverages and service from the Beverage Standard Association. “It’s great to know that all the hard work that all the staff, Daren and myself have put in over the last six months is being recognised. We’ve had high standards right from the start and never once lowered our expectations. Our customers wouldn’t want that…” It may have come as a surprise to Ian and Daren but the increasing number of customers visiting Farmer and Friends Kitchen gives them an indication that they are doing something right and, following a series of ‘mystery assessments’ by the BSA, it seems as though they also feel the same. “We’ve gone through a total refurb with the sole aim of creating a pleasurable environment to eat and drink. We want customers to leave totally satisfied and happy with their experience. You’ve got the quality 50

of the food and drink, the decor, the music, the customer service, the menu and the ambience, to name a few, and not putting 110% into any of these areas means we’re failing our customers and we may as well give up. This is what the BSA look for. They have very high standards focusing on all areas of the business. It’s not all about the drinks themselves although they are extremely important. “They loved the fact that we try and source our suppliers locally. We’re firm believers of keeping the money in the community and our customers recognise that and like the fact that they are to doing their bit. Even our coffee, albeit from another county, is sourced from Mark and his local coffee company in Wombourne.

Farmer and Friends received their award in London on the 14th October where the guest of honour was Dame Kelly Holmes. And the work doesn’t stop there, “We’re extending the kitchen to cope with demand and we want to take advantage of our evening licence, especially with Christmas coming up where we’ve had several bookings for parties. It’s a great evening venue and we’ve had some brilliant feedback on previous events, it will be a shame not to utilise the space.” Why not pay Ian and Daren and the Farmer and Friends Kitchen a visit to experience the superb local food and friendly atmosphere on offer… you won’t be disappointed!

“We get our meat from Joe at Codsall Family butchers; he makes our sausages to our recipe and makes his own black pudding. He can trace his meat back to a selection of Shropshire farms and that’s important to us. Our cakes, if not homemade are made by Julie, the baker, at Apley Farm and our bread is delivered daily from Trows Bakery in Telford. A Taste of Italy in Tettenhall

Your editor takes the bull by the horns and visits Steve Bull’s Italian restaurant, Bravaccios, with a party of five difficult and discerning diners - two of whom are Italian; one half-Italian.

By Geoff Hall

Ever wonder if you’ve bitten off more than you can chew? It seemed a good idea at the time: book a table for six for Sunday lunch at a top restaurant; bring my partner, Gisella, her son Jonathon, her brother - and birthday boy - Gerry and friends and enjoy the tastes and titillations of Italy, in Upper Green, Tettenhall. So why do I now tread with trepidation towards the entrance? Because standing beside me are three of the most ardent critics of Italian food - Gisella and Gerry both share Italian ancestry - and even though we have eaten here before in the evening - I fear I still may be walking into the Lion’s den. Nevertheless with such inviting aromas already assailing my olfactory senses, I meander inside and my anxiety is instantly allayed by a warm and friendly welcome from restaurant manager, Paul. And then I see pictures of Bully in his pomp at Wolves, smiling down from the walls like his divine holiness the Pope, which only go to unsettle me further as I’m a Baggies fan. However, just then, I turn to see local bloke turned rock god Noddy Holder from Slade sitting across the way: Christmas may have come on this very day after all, as the be-hatted singer likes to say. I’m now upbeat and casting my thoughts aside, feel sure that we will soon be just another six well-fed and contented Wulfrunians, suckling heartily at the teat, like Romulus and Remus. But first a look around the place. There are two rooms, both air-conditioned; one of which has a wellappointed bar with dining space attached, the other is the restaurant - and very stylish and modern it is too. Now presiding at the head of our table in the bar, I take a glance at a menu jam-packed with options. Forgoing the traditional Sunday lunch choices (Sunday lunch main course is £6.95), we decide on the a la carte menu, since today is a special occasion. A house red wine kicks-off proceedings nicely. I take a sip and shrink into my comfy chair, while the critics peruse the starters. We then move into the restaurant where I plump for Zuppa del Giorno (£4.80); once I understand that it’s chef Mario’s homemade soup.

58

wolverhampton west magazine

Gisella goes for Gamberoni alla Siciliana (£7.80), which she of course knows to be Gamba prawns in a garlic and butter sauce. In fact, it’s this familiarity with all things Italian that has me wondering if these starters will cut the mustard. I begin my anxious wait, my mind wandering outside to the pretty view overlooking Tettenhall Green. We don’t have to wait long despite the busy room, as we are served promptly and with the utmost courtesy and consideration by our waiting staff. Silence descends upon the table as we feast upon an array of scintillating sustenance. Nods and sounds of approval emanate from all concerned - Gerry is in ebullient mood about his frankly unfathomably Italian-sounding dish; Gisella compliments her starter also - as does Jonathon. A very good start. Freshly prepared and cooked, my soup has me hungry for more and with my fears now gone, I eagerly await the main course. Filetto la Griglia (£20.50) - fillet steak, with chips, mushrooms and tomatoes - piques my interest. Gisella selects Lasagne al Gianfranco (£7.30), saying she knows a good lasagne when she tastes one. This Italian staple may be the toughest test of the restaurant yet. Thankfully when it arrives it is met with enthusiastic approval, being both tasty, light and deeply satisfying. Furthermore, Gisella even goes as far as to say that she regrets not ordering the larger-portioned option (£11). My steak is generously-sized, medium-cooked and dripping with succulent juices and flavour - a delight to the palette. Gerry is still smiling too. A very good sign indeed. We pause to soak up the friendly restaurant atmosphere, never feeling hurried or pressured by staff to complete our luncheon. Next on the agenda is dessert from the new After Dinner Delights menu. I can’t refuse the Cheesecake Amaretto (£3.90); Gisella again goes for another signature Italian classic - Tiramisu (£3.90). I take a gulp of wine. Could this final taste-test leave a bitter aftertaste? It turns out that Mario’s special recipe for the famous trifle hits just the right spot and is described by Gisella as “one of the finest she’s had.” Phew. High praise is due also for my dessert: a creamy offering enriched with almond liqueur. It is a perfect note on which to end. Well, save for the coffee. And as the finest Italian beans drain from our glasses, I eagerly seek the verdict. Nothing but praise and satisfaction for the entire experience from my party is forthcoming. I’m so thrilled that I even suggest we next try the mid-week lunch menu - two main meals for £10 on Wednesday to Saturday. And that’s no bull.

Indian Restaurants

used include cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, chillies, peppercorns, cumin and mustard seed. Coriander seeds, finely ground are frequently used for thickening the sauces and turmeric provides the colour. You may also detect garlic, onion and tomato though with the best foods; the individual ingredients are seldom detectable, being incorporated into a deliciously fragrant whole.

There is almost no High Street in the country that doesn’t have at least one Indian restaurant... They were probably the first of the ethnic eating places to appear in this country. And although they have now been joined by restaurants offering meals from almost every other country in the world, the Indian restaurant seems to hold a special place in our hearts when it comes to dining out. Of course, like many other purveyors of ethnic food, most Indian restaurants will take orders for eating at home or where you will. Orders may be telephoned in or given during a personal visit. The dishes will be individually packed in suitable dishes; together with all the necessary accompaniments ready to serve piping hot at your own, home table. An Indian takeaway is a great way to entertain unexpected friends or cater for a large celebration or party without the hassle of hours of pre-party preparation. There are still people around who would probably enjoy an Indian meal but who find the thought to be frightening. They fear it may be too hot for them to cope with. Well there should be no need for fear. Curries come in great variety from sweet and mild to wildly volcanic and all stages in between. The heat or spiciness of Indian food depends very much on the region from which the chefs come. Generally speaking the northern parts favour the milder dishes and the further south they hail from, the hotter they are. However, even this rule is far from invariable. What diners will find is the waiting staff will be only too happy to advise customers on the degree of spiciness likely to be encountered in any of the dishes on their menu. And they can be trusted; it would never be in their interests to mislead their patrons. So what can you expect to find on the menu at your local Indian restaurant? Well starting with probably the mildest of dishes, there is the Korma, a mild, golden concoction fragrant with almond and coconut. The other end of the scale you may see Vindaloo, a classic hot dish with a rich dark sauce... Some Indian dishes contain meat, some are purely vegetarian. Some are based on potato, others on lentils or chick peas. The spices 60

Much of the attraction of an Indian meal comes from the accompaniments and side dishes, which add so much to the whole eating experience. But don’t forget the drinks. These days lager is favourite, Kingfisher or Cobra are the Indian versions and very refreshing they are too, especially after a very spicy dish. However, wine is beginning to be accepted, especially the semi-sparkling varieties. Non-alcoholic drinks include Lassi, a yoghurt based drink similar to buttermilk and of course, tea, hot or iced. There can be few in these islands that have not enjoyed the delights of an Indian meal. There are some however. If you are one of them, well don’t you think it’s time you did? Check out our advertisers for a truly top-notch dining experience!

Wombourne Tandoori Restaurant Taste the Difference By Rob Taylor

“It should have been: ‘What’s the Story Morning Tandoori?”, I jest to my long-suffering girlfriend, Nicola. She rolls her eyes. “Don’t be like that; this Indian restaurant is second to naan.” She smirks. A-ha! Success. Now that my clumsy attempt at humour has run its course, I ask if she’s willing to tikka chance that I’ll abandon my pun-based tomfoolery and accompany me inside. She agrees. Having been fully engaged on matters of business all day, my alimentary canal has attained status as favourite organ and, as I walk the briefest ‘hop, skip and a jump’ to the restaurant’s door, I breathe in the delightful aroma of the Empire’s most enduring legacy. It is enough to whet my appetite.

As the final refrain from ‘What’s the Story Morning Glory?’ by Oasis ebbs away on the car stereo, we arrive outside Wombourne Tandoori.

64

A mainstay of village life since 1989, Wombourne Tandoori is firmly established as the village’s favourite curry house. Upon entry, it’s clear to see why. We receive a friendly welcome into a very modern and chic dining space. Everything is immaculately finished in accordance with a contemporary black and white design theme; there’s delicate

LED lighting in the star-spangled ceiling, Bollywood ambient music and a scene-stealing wall-mounted water feature centrepiece. It must be the finest interior of its kind around these parts. We are quickly seated on this busy Friday night by owner and manager Rafique Miah, who, with his brother, head chef Makhan, started the business all those years ago. Taking our positions in the window seats I can think of no better vantage point from which to observe Wombourne’s picturesque idyll. The cricket green, the church - it’s all just a touch away from an episode of Midsummer Murders. And now I’m in situ, I could murder a curry. An assortment of dips and poppadoms start the festivities. This customary serving prompts my mind to wander onto the sweet mysteries that attend the cult of the curry. For instance how, every time you break a poppadom, there is always a fragment which takes the form of India. Having happily eaten every last crumb of ‘little India’, we see the arrival of the starters, Chicken Chat (£3.10) and Tandoori Lamb Chops (£4.15). Impressed by the fastidious attention to presentation and

wolverhampton west magazine

generous portion size, we tuck in. My lamb is spicy and satisfying and offset nicely by the accompanying bed of cool, crisp salad. I am reliably informed by Nicola that the chicken is “light, full of flavour and tantalising to the taste buds.” A good start - now for the main event: Chicken Tikka Masala (£7.25) and Chicken Peshwari (£7.25), which both arrive like a Swiss train.

Masalas before, I know a good one when I taste it and this is every bit the finest. Swimming in a rich, creamy sauce, the chicken is tender and the naan bread (£2) complements it perfectly. A masterpiece of taste and a shining example of generosity of portion. Nicola’s Peshwari is fruity, delicious and a perfect alternative to the classic Masala dish. Two relatively safe and nottoo-spicy dishes they may be, but there is a rich variety on the menu which caters to the more daring among you. You have been warned.

To finish we choose Fantastica (£3.75) - a crispy chocolate treasure - and Strawberry and Vanilla Ice Cream (2.75), both of which clean the palate effectively and provide a delightfully sweet note on which to end. But that’s not the end. Every meal is finished with a complimentary chocolate and shot of liqueur. So then, as you can see, it’s well worth popping out for an Indian in Wombourne but, if you haven’t the time to sit and be served inside, there’s a takeaway (collectiononly) service available too. And bookings are already been taken for Christmas and New Year, so act fast and you’ll be sure to curry favour with your family during the coming festive season.

In fact it’s very clear that such attentive service to the customer’s every whim and fancy is at the root of the restaurant’s success. The staff all have a slavish devotion to their duties and excel at every one. Seldom before have I ever seen such a high level of service in such a busy environment. Of course it’s not just top-notch service that matters; it’s the food that really sees the regulars return week after week and the restaurant’s reputation spread far and wide. Having had many

Wandering Around Wombourne Wombourne. Now here’s a cute village with a central hub to rival the best of the Cotswolds. Time to buy a bag of chips and find a bench. From my new vantage point I spy a spire - a 16th Century one to my untrained eye - and cricketers on the green. Could that be Shane Warne at his middle-aged best at the bowling crease? No, it’s nearly winter and I need new specs. A quick canter around the village sees me bump into a friendly optician, who fixes me up. Now I’m hungry, so it’s time to put my new-found 20/20 vision to good use. Well what’s this? Five stars awarded to Wombourne Tandoori from reviewers Rate My Place; top quality cuisine like this you can see a mile away. In fact there are loads of pubs and restaurants here, all keen to fill your Christmas boots. Yes, by this point I’m thoroughly enchanted by the village and you’ll be too - particularly this Christmas. Turning itself into an over-sized Santa’s grotto, Wombourne is the perfect place to shop for presents, with its bountiful supply of retailers offering everything from gift cards to home furnishings. There’s such a rich diversity here, your Santa-sack will be fit to burst after a visit - it has all the trimmings. Plus a butchers for the turkey. And there are more hairdressers here than you can shake a stick at - I wonder if one of them wants to buy my car?

Rob Taylor eyes up the picturesque village of Wombourne - just in time for Christmas. Our eyes meet at the traffic lights. I’m not at my best; hair unkempt, sunglasses askew, a gaily-coloured knitted scarf - a present from Granny - tied tight around my neck. But I’m in a convertible and we’ve all seen enough TV car commercials to know how the story goes from here. Admittedly it’s an ageing Mazda MX5 with telltale signs of corrosion under the wheel arches and sills, but surely even this can’t interfere with yet another example of ‘automotive aphrodisiac facilitates union of two beautiful people’. Well, I’d love to tell you that life does indeed imitate art and that beside me in the next lane of traffic sits some irresistibly beautiful siren, staring back at me with smouldering brown eyes. However, I am, in fact, looking into the cabin of a decrepit Ford Transit van, up close and personal and staring down the taunts of Wayne Murphy - building contractor at large - and his toothless workmate, Lee, while sitting in a unsettlingly effeminate, virgin-white open-top monument to the cult of hairdressing. And it’s only a few weeks til Christmas. Chills run through my body. Time to put the roof up; plainly I’ve been watching too much TV. So under increasing Neanderthal-like pressure from Mr Murphy, I gaze into the thread-bare carpet underfoot. The lights change; he crawls away and then something much more aesthetically pleasing catches my eye: 70

Let’s Go Round Again - A Shopping Wonderland Christmas is coming, but don’t panic! Pay a visit to Let’s Go Round Again in the lovely village of Wombourne and let them help to take the stress away. They will even gift wrap your gifts with love (and a bit of tinsel), free of charge, ready to send straight to Santa. Their huge range of gifts are sourced from all the major gift fairs throughout the UK and cover a range of prices from £1.99 to £199, and a range of products - which include jewellery, scarves, candles, unique gifts and so much more - all beautifully displayed on two floors. They pride themselves on good old-fashioned customer service and on stepping into the shop you will be welcomed by one of their lovely ‘shop-fairies’ (so called because it seems like 101 tasks

are completed each day as if by magic!). Their personal shopper service comes as second nature to them and they will do their very best to help you find the perfect purchase for whatever the occasion. However, you will also be left in peace should you wish to spend some time looking at the thousands of gifts on offer. Browsers are more than welcome. Having begun life as a small family business in 1999, they have tried to listen to what their customers want over the years and have grown to be the business they are today culminating in a very exciting visit to a glitzy award ceremony at The Savoy Hotel in London earlier this year. They mingled with representatives from the likes of John Lewis and Selfridges which was quite amazing in itself, but then came home with the award for the Best Independent Gift Retailer (Midlands & Wales) 2013, which now takes pride of place in their shop!

In that time she has not only maintained the traditional toyshop ‘feel’, that made it so popular with kids and adults alike when it opened back in 2000, but has also expanded the business to include a variety of new products and services. Aside from stocking an extensive range of educational toys, from leading brands like Lego and Top Model, the company has evolved into a one-stop-shop for busy moms, as owner Jo explains: “We don’t just sell toys at The Learning Ladder. We supply balloons for all occasions, offer bouncy castles for hire, stock a great range of children’s party must-haves, sell quality used clothes through our dress agency and even supply a fabulous range of ‘Forever’ health and wellbeing products which are all made from natural Aloe Vera.” In fact, The Learning Ladder even has a unique way to help busy moms prepare for the many events on their child’s social calendar: “Our ‘Mom’s in a Rush’ service takes the hassle out of gift buying for children’s parties by allowing moms to give us their requirements

- budget, age and sex of child - so that we can then select a suitable gift on their behalf and get it wrapped-up and ready to collect on the way to the party.” “We even have a gift list facility, that ensures no child receives the same present twice at their birthday celebration.” Louise Higgins manages the balloon side of the business and ensures that customers’ needs are met, whatever the occasion: “We sell balloons for all events; parties, weddings, christenings and even funerals. Louise helps our clients find the balloons that will be right for their occasion, whether that’s an arch for a wedding, a personalised message for a special party or clusters of balloons for a christening.” Bouncy castle hire at The Learning Ladder makes up a key part of the business, because kids - and grown-ups - like nothing more than a bouncy castle party: “Billy Young takes care of our bouncy castle hire at the shop. We have five castles that can be hiredout for kids - or adult - parties. We have a castle that will suit whatever you’ve got planned as they can be used by all age groups. Customers can view our full range at www. billysbouncycastlehire.co.uk.” The company’s dress agency gives mothers the opportunity to convert their child’s quality

used clothing into cash - or money to spend in store via the Christmas Savings club. “Moms invest a lot of money in buying clothing for their children, so we wanted to give them the opportunity to get something back, that’s why we run our dress agency service.” The Christmas Savings Club is great for parents that want to pay for their children’s Christmas gifts throughout the year to help make the festive season more affordable. Of course, with Christmas just around the corner the store is sure to be extremely busy: “We will be opening 7 days a week on the lead-up to Christmas. If busy parents want to shop during the evening they are welcome to make an appointment and we will open-up the shop. All of the Learning Ladder team - my sales assistant Lynne Cox, Billy, Louise and myself - are always happy to help customers find exactly what they’re looking for.” And Jo has just the thing to keep kids entertained whilst their parents shop: “We have ‘play tables’ in store, so that children can play and experience the toys we sell whilst their parents are browsing. We regularly run competitions for children to enter with prizes that are supplied by various companies.”

Jo and the team at the learning ladder have been a breath of fresh air for me, in a climate where we seem to have lost all sense of personal service, Jo & her team go over and above to accommodate my needs.  As a full time working mum of 2, time is of the essence, the learning ladder mums in a rush service is invaluable to me, not only are the presents chosen & wrapped by the team, it also means I can call in on the way to or from work to collect, without impacting on my working day. Jo and the learning ladder are my present angels! - Kindest regards, Helen Lees

Getting Trimmer For Christmas Dinner! by Dave Corfield The broom stick challenge! Each exercise to be done for 40 seconds with 20 seconds rest, and repeat the exercises twice. All you need is a broom stick.

The festive season is around the corner once more. A time of parties, presents and of course rapidly expanding waist lines!

Now you’re done with the warm up...

1.

“I’ll get fit and lose weight in the New Year!” The mantra repeated every year by thousands of us!

2. 3.

Understandably, as Christmas approaches it can be more and more difficult to find the time to get to the gym and stick with a consistent exercise programme. But why wait until 2014 to get into shape? Get a head start on the festive bulge with my Christmas home workout! It is short & simple but very effective. It should be done every other day or at least 3 times per week. All that is required is some floor space, a chair or bed, a staircase & broom stick or something similar. Get burning those calories! Warm up - 5 minutes in total... 30 seconds steady, 30 seconds fast Steady - high knees (and I mean get those knees high) 30 seconds Then... Fast - Sprint on the spot (move your arms as fast as you can and bend your knees, sprint 30 seconds (the movement needs to be very rapid!)

1.

Prone Bunny hops; With hands on floor swing both legs side to side over the broom stick

2.

Standing Bunny hops; Jump over stick side to side standing up (hands on head to make it tougher!)

3.

Squat thrust; With stick behind you, hands on floor, knees tucked between your arms, kick legs back over stick & return.

The fat melter circuit!

The torso toner!

Each exercise needs to be done for 45 seconds and a 15 second rest... Squats

First round do 20, second round do 10, third round do 5 each of the below

Lunges

1.

Press ups

Walking press up

2.

Dips off the edge of the bed

4.

Mountain climbers

3.

Sit ups

5.

Plyo squats

4.

Leg raises

6.

Tuck jumps

1 minute Plank to finish!

7.

Star jumps

You’re done... Well done... Repeat every 2 days.

Repeat the above twice Now rest....

Download a round timer. I would recommend tabata pro for iPhone. There are alternatives for the berry.

Staircase challenge! 2 Burpees and then run up the stairs... When you get to the top do 2 more Burpees

Good luck!

You need to run up the stairs 10 times in total... It’s tough but burns loads of calories... If you’re feeling extra fit you can repeat the above for a second time and replace the Burpees with two tuck jumps... In total another 10 sprints up the stairs...

To see each exercise in detail please visit our YouTube channel at Patshull Park GCC and search Dave Corfield’s Christmas home workout. Please make sure you have your GP’s approval before undertaking any exercise programme.

To request a homework-out plan email dave@davecorfieldfitness.com. For more information visit our website at www.davecorfieldfitness.com or text fitness on 07966 633664.

Repeat the above for 5 minutes. 74

Early Christmas Shopping One of the big problems about a day out Christmas shopping is the crowded condition of the shops. And as the day goes on, you grow progressively more tired, irritable and impatient. Your feet ache, your head throbs. In amongst the crowds you can’t find the things you are after. You buy the wrong colour or size of one or two items. Finally you give up in disgust, exhausted, and with your shopping list still amazingly long. But that’s not the only painful thing about Christmas shopping; there is the sheer expense of it all. Somehow you have just got your budget balanced, finances ticking over gently and satisfactorily, and a little put away for holidays or that rainy day when, bam, Christmas, arrives. You’ve no choice but to blow the lot on gifts for family and friends, food you wouldn’t dream of buying at any other time of the year, and decorations for your home that really looks well enough without. Of course you could ignore the whole thing, do a Scrooge and cry 78

“Humbug” at the whole business, but... well you can’t. Christmas is Christmas after all and if it wasn’t there we would have to invent it. Fortunately there are ways of making the shopping a great deal less painful on two counts. Shopping early means you can forestall the crowds, visit the shops in comparative comfort and gain the full attention of relaxed, unharassed shop assistants. Shopping early means you have a good choice of the full range of goods stocked by shops and stores - before the crowds have depleted them. You will be able to find all the colours, sizes and special makes you want and, if some shops don’t stock what you need, you have time, energy and opportunity to shop around till you find those that do. Shopping early means you don’t need to try to buy everything on one expedition. You can shop for one or two items at a time and concentrate on getting your purchases exactly right. As a result you are less tired, more alert and less likely to buy the wrong thing. But there is an even better bonus. Shopping early means you can spread the cost. No need to blow

your all at one fell swoop. Buy things one or two at a time, starting as early on in the year as you can, and you’ll hardly notice the outgoings. You can in fact budget for your Christmas spending so, over the months or weeks preceding Christmas, your budget will suffer less. Your nest egg won’t suddenly ‘hatch’ and fly away. And you won’t feel that deep, nagging resentment at the enforced depletion of your resources. So, this year, shop early, it’s easier, more enjoyable, and kinder on your budget, your body and your mind. In short, shopping early is a great deal less painful all round! And remember that local independent retailers often hold the key to making Christmas shopping a truly rewarding experience. There’s something for everyone and a range of unique and special items - that can often be personalised - at great value-for-money prices. Check-out farm shops for speciality food and unusual presents, vineyards for vine adoption gifts and top quality bottles of wine - that can bought with personalised labels and packages - and boutiques for cards, wrap and stocking fillers for all the family. wolverhampton west magazine

Find Time For Some TLC For Your Skin By Helen Taylor

If you’re honest you probably won’t have thoroughly scrubbed, buffed and polished your body since the summer months when you were about to apply your fake tan. And, there’s no doubt that your skin will be looking dull and lacklustre as a result.

You’ll be pleased to hear then, that there’s some quick, easy and simple steps that will have you ready to bare-all in no time. And, all you have to do is promise to follow them once or twice a week. The reward? Fabulous skin all over.

The Benefits of Brushing Using a dry natural bristle body brush, work from your feet

upwards in long, firm, sweeping strokes. Be careful not to press too hard, the idea is to invigorate the skin, not irritate it. This action has been proven to boost circulation and lift skin-dulling impurities from the pores in one easy action.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate Exfoliators have great results when used on both face and body. The tiny grains lift and remove impurities and dead skin cells from the skin, leaving it looking instantly brighter. Use a circular motion to apply the product to damp skin and work from your feet upwards, spending time massaging every bit of your skin. Rinse thoroughly, and move on to the next stage.

Gently Does It Whether you consider your skin to be sensitive or not, it’s always best to choose a shower gel that’s designed for sensitive skin, and one which has natural ingredients. Don’t be tempted to have the water too hot when you’re in the shower, it dehydrates the skin, so turn the heat down.

Lock-In Moisture It’s essential to moisturise your body every time you shower. Leave your skin damp and massage in a generous amount of product to lock-in moisture for long-lasting hydration.

Courtesy of Clinique 80

Try to avoid perfumed products. They smell great, but can contain strong chemicals that can have a drying effect on delicate areas of skin.

Look Gorgeous This Christmas With Olivia’s Beauty If you suffer with ageing or problem skin, then you’ll know just how much it can affect your confidence. So you’ll be pleased to hear that Olivia’s Beauty has just the thing to help; Agera Skin Peels. Salon owner, Fiona Brooks explains: “Agera peels offer a revolutionary new way to effectively treat ageing skin, acne and unwanted pigmentation. All of the treatments are non-invasive, contain no glycolic acid and require no recovery time.” Each peel is specially designed to address a specific issue: The Agera anti-ageing peel works by stimulating cells deep within the skin to promote the production of collagen and elastin, which helps to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in smoother and firmer-looking skin. Agera acne peel quickly brings acne under control thanks to an antibacterial sterilising action that dramatically reduces the risk of future scarring. The revolutionary peel also works to reduce blocked pores and redness that’s associated with acne conditions. Agera’s pigmentation control peel penetrates the skin’s pigment cells to gently and effectively reduce the appearance of unwanted discolouration, resulting in a more even skin tone. There’s no doubt that the results are impressive, but customers can amplify the effect by choosing to have another treatment alongside: “Combining the Agera peels with a microdermabrasion

84

treatment really enhances the results. For example, those who have been treated with an acne peel will find that microdermabrasion helps to remove blackheads and diminish existing acne scars.” With the party season well and truly here, there’s no better time to improve the look of your skin: “Having a peel before a special event or occasion is a great way to ensure you look your best. Your skin will be rejuvenated and will be looking radiant. And, because your skin will be smooth and even it will provide a perfect base for your make-up.” “Clients can get six peel treatments for the price of five at the moment and three sessions of microdermabrasion for the price of two.” There are some other fabulous offers at Olivia’s too: “Our party package includes all of the essential services that ladies will require for their Christmas socialising. Nail extensions or Shellac, Weekend Lashes and a spray tan are all included.” “We’ve just added a great selection of new gel glitter polishes to our existing range. Glitter is a must-have for Christmas and perfect for any party. We’re sure that ladies will be choosing glitter nails when they buy our party package.” If you fancy a more permanent beauty solution, then why not try IPL Laser Hair Removal at the salon? “We’re also offering IPL at an incredible price; ladies can get six half leg sessions for only £180.”

Dix-Neuf

A Must-Visit Destination For Fashion Lovers

If you love fashion, then you’ll be excited to hear that there’s a fabulous clothing boutique now open in the heart of Wombourne village.

Each week Alison travels to London to source new stock, meaning that there are always different clothes, shoes and accessories arriving at the boutique: “I work hard to find the right stock at the right price for my clients. By approaching manufacturers directly - who supply to leading fashion labels, like All Saints - I’m able to get the same styles but at a fraction of the price they’d retail at in high street stores.”

Dix-Neuf is filled with the best selection of trend-led pieces that are perfect for stylish women of all ages and sizes.

There’s an eclectic mix of daywear and eveningwear at Dix-Neuf in sizes 8-18 and with prices that start from just £16.99.

Owner Alison Dee is passionate about the ranges she sells and is dedicated to offering unique, quality pieces at affordable prices: “I personally select each item I sell to ensure that every woman - no matter what her age or size - can find something special at a great price.”

“We’ve got some fabulous styles and designs, and because we’re a boutique, our customers know that they’ll be buying something exclusive and special.” Alison makes it easy for her customers to stay on-trend by keeping a close eye on up-and-

coming fashions: “I absolutely love clothes and enjoy bringing the latest looks to my boutique. There are some great designs in store from brands like Wal G, Love, Religion and Naomi Tsukishima.” But Alison hasn’t always been in the fashion business: “I sold property for many years whilst living in Jersey. When my family and I decided to move back to England, I was keen to start my own business. Opening my boutique in Wombourne was the perfect choice, the shop is a great size and in a fantastic location, just off Planks Lane.” With Christmas around the corner, shoppers at the boutique will be pleased to find that there are some great gifts too: “Our accessories make perfect gifts; we’ve got a fabulous selection of statement jewellery, scarves and gorgeous handbags.”

Party Perfect Make-Up December’s party season is the one month in the calendar where you can really embrace a strong makeup look - so make the most of it.

Sophisticated Christmas Glamour - Get the look: Skin has got to be flawless, so use a primer first, then apply a covering foundation - using a foundation brush - which blends seamlessly with your natural colouring. Choose a light-reflecting loose powder to apply on top of your foundation for a radiant glow that helps to set your base. Sculpt cheekbones by applying a blusher in a dusky pink hue. Remember to not place the colour too close to the centre of your face - smile as you apply it so that you see the apples of your cheeks, and sweep upwards and outwards. Next, lightly define your eyes. Use a neutral eyeshadow across the lids and brow bone, then apply a light brown shade in the socket, and a deeper brown in the far corner. Brush your brows into shape using a brow brush, pluck away any stray hairs, and emphasise them with a hint of colour.

Courtesy of Estee Lauder Choose a liquid liner in black and line your top lid, wait for it to dry fully before curling your eyelashes and apply lashings of mascara. Use a soft black eye-pencil under your eye, and on the inner rim choose black liner for a smoky look or white for a wide-eyed look. Finish with a touch of mascara. Use a lip liner in a shade that complements your lipstick and create a great shape. Using a lip brush, apply your lipstick. Choose a berry-red hue for instant glamour and finish with a dab of lip gloss in the centre of your lips for a really full look.

Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital

“Private” Is Another Choice! Why Wait? modern, comfortable relaxed environment with the installation of the latest safety features – such as advanced nurse call systems and refreshing the operating theatres. We have 39 private rooms, each complete with a flat screen TV, wi-fi and en-suite facilities.

If you’re waiting for an operation or the operation you need is no longer available on the NHS, you can choose to have private treatment, so why wait? Our services are affordable and accessible to everyone, both for customers with private medical insurance and for those who wish to pay for themselves. The following simple steps outline how you can get fast access to diagnosis or treatment at our hospital:  Visit your GP and ask to be referred to your local private Nuffield hospital.  Your GP can write an ‘open referral letter’ which will detail the care you need or they may suggest a consultant, in which case the GP will write a ‘direct referral letter’.  If you have Medical Health Insurance, call your insurance provider and they can confirm which consultants and healthcare professionals are covered under your membership and that the treatment you need is covered by your policy. They will issue you with a “pre-authorisation” number. 94

However, it’s important that you liaise closely with your insurance provider before and throughout your treatment. OR  If you are Paying for Yourself, following your initial consultation, you can pay for your treatment as a one off payment or you may be eligible to use our financial partner, First Medical Loans to cover the cost with more manageable payments. They will help work out what the best options are, enabling you to go ahead with your treatment without a delay or worrying about payment. With an interest-free loan*, there’s no deposit required and you simply pay back the cost of your treatment with 6 or 10 equal monthly payments.  Contact us here at your local Nuffield Hospital and arrange an appointment that suits you. Choosing us for your treatment means you will find a professional and caring environment, with spotlessly clean rooms and nurses who treat you like a person. We pride ourselves on combining the technology of the future with the values of the past that is why we have a dedicated and personable matron, who ensures the highest of standards throughout our hospital.

The hospital has on-site physiotherapy with our therapists being leaders in their field and can provide you all you need to help you with pain relief and rehabilitation for a wide range of conditions. We also have an on-site pharmacy and pathology department with an imaging department capable of providing X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, and ultrasound and have the latest digital mammography equipment. In our hospital you can expect:  Rapid access to consultations, x-rays and treatment  Matron-led care with a dedicated, friendly nursing team  First class treatment and clinical standards  See the same consultant throughout your entire treatment  Guidance and support throughout every stage of your treatment  Private, en-suite rooms with excellent facilities So don’t wait, having private treatment may be easier than you think and it is reassuring to know that you DO have a choice! Are Your Eyes Feeling Gritty, Itchy, Watery Or Sticky? ‌Help Is At Hand! This is just one of the additional optical services they offer, along with Optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanning of the back of the eye. An OCT scan can detect the early signs of macular degeneration, glaucoma, detached retinas and other eye disorders. This procedure only takes minutes and the equipment never touches the eye, so there is no discomfort. Taylor Biddle Opticians, with practices in Compton and Wombourne, are one of the first opticians in the Wolverhampton area to offer a new type of eye examination specifically designed to help children with visual dyslexia.

Taylor Biddle Opticians are now offering an Anterior Eye Clinic where your eye discomfort can be investigated and remedied. Whether your eyes burn, feel gritty, itchy, sticky or watery, they could benefit from a thorough Anterior Eye Assessment using microscope technology and a personal treatment plan.

Around a third of people with dyslexia experience visual disturbance or discomfort when reading print. If both eyes try to do the same job the words and letters appear to shift, sending confusing messages to the brain, which can cause difficulties with reading and spelling. Although originally created for school children, this can also benefit adults with occupational difficulties caused by vision.

Weight Loss Wonder LOSING WEIGHT doesn’t get more revolutionary or enjoyable than this. Imagine walking into a glass treadmill, it fillingup with warm water and running or walking for just 30 minutes. H2O Physio offers innovative water-based training programmes that provide the advantages of high-intensity exercise without putting stress on joints. ‘It’s an extremely fast, effective yet low-impact way of getting into shape,’ says H2O Physio’s Davinder Chatha. Another benefit is water resistance. As water is 800 times denser than air and provides up to 12 times the resistance on land, you work harder and expend more energy. In fact, you can burn more calories in less time, so it’s an ideal way for busy people to exercise. And as

you get fitter, the water-level can be reduced for even greater resistance. As water lacks the gravitational pull of land, staying upright uses opposing muscles for every action. Core muscles are automatically activated, which makes the abs and obliques work harder. ‘We tend to carry fat in these areas simply due to muscle weakness,’ adds Davinder. ‘By working these muscles we not only lose the fat but also improve our posture.’ Since opening, the centre has had some truly remarkable results. Sue Cartwright has lost three stone in 12 sessions by eating healthily and exercising in the treadmill for just 30 minutes a week. Nin Kulair recently had a baby and, after just six sessions, lost nine pounds and is now back in her old clothes. Others use the treadmill to treat conditions such as arthritis and MS or following orthopaedic surgery and sports injuries – most of them have lost weight too.

www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

And you’d be in good company as underwater treadmills are popular among elite athletes and celebrities. Jennifer Aniston’s honed physique is reportedly down to aqua-running for 15 minutes every day. So if you’re hoping to drop a dress size for the festive season… here’s something that really works.

Born With A Silver Spoon by Denis Ridgway self sanitises the spoon so people who could afford it would have silver spoons and they therefore became an indication of social class - denoting membership of the Land Owning classes. You can see therefore where the saying “born with a silver spoon in his mouth” came from and what it meant. In the October auction at Perry and Phillips in Bridgnorth there was a collection of 16 Apostle and Seal spoons from the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The spoons, once part of a private collection exhibited in the Exeter museum were sold individually and the best of them, a spoon from 1571 with a figure of St Thomas as its finial made a total of £14,000, and the collection as a whole made a grand total of £50, 000.

Before place settings were used at dining tables, which became popular around 1700, people brought their own spoons to eat with, this was because disease was rife - and owning your own spoon was important and the initials of the Owner or his mark would be on each spoon. They were made of wood, pewter and other metals but the best ones were made of silver. Silver was expensive but it has antimicrobial properties and

98

Apostle Spoons were particularly popular in prereformation times, when belief in the services of a Patron Saint was still strong. They symbolised the Last Supper of Christ in the company of the Apostles, and were particularly popular in England and were also found in Germany. The head of the spoon would have a facsimile of one of the twelve apostles and a figure of the Virgin Mary or Christ and would bear the initials of the Owner. There is a set of 13 Apostle Spoons in the British Museum dating from 1536, but sets such as this are extremely rare and a single Apostle Spoon, as we saw, is very collectable. Obviously the quality of the silver spoon denoted the wealth of the Owner and the skill of the employed craftsman, in those days a goldsmith. The best quality would have a three dimensional figure of an apostle as the finial and a lesser spoon would have the figure stamped on the stem of the spoon. Our auction on the 1st October which included the spoons was very busy as it caused quite a stir among silver dealers. We had emails and telephone calls from all over the globe - Australia, Hong Kong, Canada and all over the UK. All in all a most successful and enjoyable day.

Perton Christmas Fair

of us will be enjoying lighting lights, singing carols, munching mince pies and watching all of the entertainment, before paying a visit to Santa in the late afternoon.

Wolverhampton West Magazine caught-up with Hannah Charman to find out how she’ll be helping to light up Perton this year.

Christmas lights. It simply wouldn’t do, so I resolved to make things different for 2013.

“When I moved to Perton last February I decided that it was time for a change. I left my job in September and started up my own business the following month.

“Since September we’ve been working hard to find Santa, reindeer, lights, Christmas trees, entertainers and stall holders to make our fair truly special.

“I was really keen to sell my wares at Perton’s Christmas Fair that year, but I was surprised to find out that there wasn’t one; despite local villages, like Albrighton, Pattingham and Tettenhall, each holding their own fair annually.

“Unfortunately the reindeer will be too busy to attend - it is very close to Christmas after all - but Santa will definitely be making an appearance from his own grotto in Perton Library, where he’ll be handing out presents.

“I felt that it was making us look like the poor relation - especially as we didn’t even have any

“Our stall holders will be there from 3pm till 9pm, selling all manner of exciting things, and the rest

“Thanks to a great team of Pertonians, we’ll be holding our first Christmas fair on Saturday November 30th and we can’t wait.

“All of the money that we raise from the Perton Christmas Fair will go towards funding some much-needed Christmas lights for our village centre. Any funds that remain will be made available for community projects. “Please support us and help us to raise enough money so that we can illuminate our village every year. We want to create a Vegas style Christmas from now on.” All of the final arrangements for the fair are coming together now, but you can still help: To book a pitch please contact Clive Rathbone on 07414 832990. To volunteer your services as an elf or anything else, please contact Hannah on 07763 595879. Regular updates can also be found on Facebook at ‘Perton Christmas Fair’ or Perton Community Post’

Tettenhall and the Next Twelve Years: Have Your Say by having their say now, whether it relates to conservation of our local heritage, new homes, shops or better open spaces.”

This ground-breaking initiative in the west of Wolverhampton is seeking feedback from local residents and businesses. Several hundred local people have already given their time and ideas to a new Neighbourhood Plan (called ‘Our Place Our Plan’) which will influence the longer term future of the two Tettenhall wards. Cyril Randles, who chairs the steering group, said: “Local people can influence what happens in the area over the next 12 years 100

Our Place Our Plan has been drafted by local residents giving their time voluntarily as a project led by Tettenhall District Community Council.  Hundreds of comments and suggestions have been received from people across both wards. Following advice from professionals, these have now been worked up into policies to give guidelines for potential developers and infrastructure projects. The draft plan has been commended by the Department of Communities and Local Government for its clarity. The volunteers are now looking for feedback on whether the plan reflects peoples’ views accurately. The consultation deadline has recently been extended to the 8th November.

“We are looking for local people to get involved by telling us what they do and don’t like in the plan. So far the whole plan is locally generated and we think it is a good blend of local knowledge and professional input. But of course it can always be improved and so all comments are welcome,” added George Reiss, a local resident who volunteered to help. The plan will then be re-assessed and amended as necessary, and then will be subject to a referendum in summer 2014. If agreed, our Place our Plan will influence local planning decisions until 2026. www.ourplaceourplan.org.uk wolverhampton west magazine

Ask The Podiatrist: Diabetes What is Diabetes Mellitus? This is a condition where you have raised blood glucose levels (called hyperglycaemia) due to a metabolic disorder.

There are two main types of diabetes: TYPE I – (Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus) where patients control their diabetes with insulin TYPE II – (Non Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus) where patients may control their diabetes through diet, tablets or sometimes insulin. Both of these types of diabetes can be harmful to feet. It is essential that everyone with diabetes of either type visit a Podiatrist regularly for a 6 – 12 monthly check up and whenever they have foot problems. Your podiatrist may recommend a much more frequent visit.

Why should diabetics see a Podiatrist? Diabetes is directly linked with profound changes to your feet. The circulation to and around your feet can deteriorate meaning you are more susceptible to infection, less likely to heal quickly and your skin quality reduces meaning it is easier to damage. The sense of feeling in your feet can also reduce so that it is possible to damage your feet and not know about it. It is important we monitor your feet regularly so that we can detect these changes early on. Even some seemingly simple problem like corns, callus or toenail cutting could cause much bigger problems like ulcers, infection, gangrene, and at worst amputation if not treated properly.

Basic Guidelines for Diabetics • Wash feet daily and dry thoroughly – especially between the toes, and file nails. • Apply an aqueous cream such as E45 to your feet daily but not between your toes. • Check your feet daily for anything unusual – colour changes, breaks in the skin, swelling, discharge etc. • Always wear shoes or house slippers on your feet to protect them. • Ensure your shoes are the correct fit and are adjustable – 2 cm heel, laced shoes are the best.

Warning Signs Redness, Swelling, Pus, Discharge, Pain. Diabetes health care is a key part of a podiatrists job role.

Fund Raising Event Trysull Helen and Richard Sanders very kindly hosted a charity event in aid of Compton Hospice at their lovely home in Trysull. In excess of £16,500 was raised, one of the biggest donations Compton Hospice has ever received from an independently run single event. It was a wish of Karen Nicholas to organise the event to thank Compton Hospice for the fantastic care she received during her battle with motor neurone disease. Karens’ family would like to thank everybody involved in organising and attending the event.

Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic Surgery is designed to change the shape of your features or the appearance of your body. Whether to go ahead is your personal choice. A key decision you need to make when thinking about any form of cosmetic surgery is the selection of your surgeon. Only with the guidance of a qualified surgeon should you consider any form of treatment or surgery. The first step is to make sure that your surgeon is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Meeting your consultant is your first step towards achieving your goal.  A consultation is an opportunity for both you and your surgeon to discuss your needs. Prepare for your consultation by making a checklist of questions or concerns you may have to ask the surgeon who will be performing the operation. Successful cosmetic surgery begins with a thorough look at your health 108

in addition to your reasons and goals for surgery. The surgeon will want to ask about your general health and past medical history, such as previous illnesses or operations, allergies, drugs you are taking and whether or not you smoke. It is handy to have this information with you. They will also ask you what changes you want to make and your reasons for making these changes. Feel free to go away and think about what you have discussed with your consultant. Ask more questions if you need to.  It’s natural to have lots of questions as well as a few reservations.  Don’t feel pressured into making any decisions.  Cosmetic surgery is a giant step, but it’s a step that could make a huge difference to the way you feel as well as the way you look. Here are a few things to consider:  How do you want cosmetic surgery to make you feel?

 What are your particular concerns?  Do you have questions that we can help you answer?  What do you want to achieve?  How much will I need to pay and what is included? Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital in Tettenhall, the leading provider of private healthcare offer advice on cosmetic surgery. You can book a complimentary 10 minute one-to-one chat with a consultant on specified dates throughout the year. If you are considering cosmetic surgery and would like to find out more, this can be an excellent introduction to the range of procedures that are available. Their next cosmetic events are on Monday 9th December 2013 and Wednesday 29th January 2014. Please call 0845 603 4346 to book a space.

Best Cheques Forward! At a reception hosted by the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Malkinder Jaspal in the Mayor’s Parlour on 1st October, donation cheques resulting from the first running of Best Foot Forward were presented to the charities nominated by the event. ‘Best Foot Forward’ is a fundraising concept new to the UK. It was premiered by the Rotary Club of Wolverhampton, on Saturday, 13th July 2013 at Aldersley Leisure Village, Wolverhampton, in the capable hands of the organising

committee, led by Rotarian Paul Lockley, with the support of the City Council, the Express & Star and 40 Founder Patrons. Cheques for £3,656.75 each were presented to Compton Hospice, Children in Need and the Rotary Charitable Trust. In addition supporters of the MS Therapy Centre, Green Meadows Animal Sanctuary, Autism West Midlands, and Central Youth Theatre used the event as a means of boosting their own funds by a total of £6,906.

In the first staging of this event in the UK, local charities benefited by a known total of £17,876 and there may be others who have not reported back. Club President Mike Colley said, “We at the Rotary Club are proud to have been the catalyst that brought all this together. But we know that the end-product was delivered by others, to whom we express our sincere thanks.”

Cancer Father Must Raise £500,000 To Save His Daughter She’s the most inspirational person I know and she’s only four years old. “I am 30; I have had a good life. I can accept it that I am likely to die within the next 2 years. At four years old how can you accept it? You haven’t had any chance to live.

Kelli with parents Tom and Joely Attwater

A father from Wolverhampton suffering from a terminal brain tumour has said his final wish is to pay for his daughter’s cancer treatment which the NHS does not fund. Tom Attwater, 30, has said he hopes to raise £500,000 to cover medical bills and accommodation for his daughter Kelli who suffers from a high-risk childhood cancer. Business manager Mr Attwater said: “Kelli is an amazing little girl. 110

“Because Kelli has relapsed once, doctors have said she’s likely to again. I need to know that she’ll be looked after when I’m gone.’ Kelli was first diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she was three months old. She underwent seven months of chemotherapy and several operations. In August last year she suffered a relapse. Despite there being ‘no evidence of disease’ for a second time Kelli’s family have been told she is likely to relapse again. If she does she will need treatment that is probably not provided by the NHS.

“I know half a million pounds is a lot of money, but the chances of Kelli relapsing are so high. “If 1,000 pubs or shops had a collection box then in a year we’d have achieved what we need to. “We’re trying everything sponsored events, selling wristbands, collection boxes. I don’t want to hit that target, I need to. “Before my time runs out I have to do everything possible to help Kelli. Please help me to do so.” For more details about how to help Kelli or to donate visit justgiving. com/helpkelli or text STOP 60 and an amount between £1-£10 to 70070 or follow their Facebook page The Kelli Smith Appeal The Kelli Smith Appeal is part of the charity Families Against Neuroblastoma - registered charity number 1135974. wolverhampton west magazine

The Haven Christmas Appeal

The Haven Wolverhampton is a lifeline for women and children and is a gem in the City and 2013 marks a Haven milestone– 40 years of working to provide a safe place for women and children to escape violence and abuse.

From small beginnings with volunteers and a council house, The Haven is now a skilled organisation, and a recognised source of expertise providing comprehensive support, including a 24 hour Helpline, 5 refuges, access to counselling, specialist staff for children, support in court, and training to local organisations, a support group for women who have left the service and have something to offer other women and children. The Haven campaigns to raise awareness of the prevalence and impact of domestic violence. In 40 years public attitudes are changing and importantly, women’s views and acceptance is also changing. The Haven remains a charity, relying on volunteers, funders and local donors.  There are key times when community support makes a real difference to the women and children at The Haven, none more so than Christmas.

There are often 100 homeless and traumatised children in Haven refuges and Christmas is a hard time for these children. This is when your help makes a real difference - Women’s Groups, Schools and Community Groups and individuals can all help. The Christmas Appeal runs from 2nd to 20th December.  Please support the Appeal for Christmas gifts on the children’s wish list -  Fireman Sam, Dora the Explorer, Peppa Pig, Play Doh, toy vehicles dolls and their accessories. Interactive toys and games are great for the older children and of course, selection boxes and sweets are welcome by all. Please call 01902 572168 to arrange to drop off the gifts or call into 103 Salop Street between 9am and 3.30pm Monday to Thursday.

The Conundrum Of Buying A Real Christmas Tree Firstly, decide whether you want a tree that will loose its needles or not. Second, decide whether you want a pot grown or cut tree. Third, decide what size you need. Fourth, what is you budget.

moist and fresh. Always remove the netting immediately, allowing the tree to breath.

Norway Spruce (Picea Abies) This is the traditional tree, heavily scented, but it can loose needles when kept in a warm environment. Nordman (Abies nordmanniana) This tree is the most popular Christmas Tree, especially as it is scented with soft needles. It is extremely needle retentive. Pine (Lodge pole) The pine has very long needles. It is popular as this tree will not loose its needles, and because of its distinct teardrop shape. What to do when you get your Tree home. Always leave the tree outside until you are ready to bring it into the house. This will keep the tree

Before taking into the house, we would advise you to give the tree a good tap to remove any loose needles. Then place the tree or tree log in a stand or receptacle that will hold water. Always treat your tree as you would a cut flower, it appreciates a drink of water. All the staff at Codsall & Wergs Christmas Trees are at your disposal, to help you make these decisions if you are unsure. They will show you the different types and varieties, and explain each trees qualities. They will help you to find the right size, shape, and price tag, finally they will net your chosen tree and carry it to your car.

Fond Farewell, Warm Welcome Looking back on his time as Headmaster at Tettenhall College, Martyn Long reflects on the enjoyment of working with vibrant young people. “I would like to thank everyone connected with Tettenhall College; pupils, colleagues, parents, governors, alumni and friends, for making my time here at the school so memorable. The warmth and friendliness shown to myself and my family will stay with us for a long time to come. “The pace in a successful and productive school is always fast, and during my time here the school and its community has continued to move forward and develop as any organisation should. The opening of the new Preparatory school just over a year ago and the school’s 150th anniversary celebrations this year provide a wonderful example of the right balance between the introduction of new initiatives and developments alongside the importance of continuing traditional strengths and values. However, it has been watching the pupils mature and grow in confidence and attitude, develop new skills and achieve academic success that has been the most rewarding. Tettenhall College is a very special place to be, something about it

114

draws you in - there is always a sense of family and community which is very difficult to encapsulate in a single word or sentence but is clear in abundance when visiting. It is a school that all involved with are proud of; for its pupils’ individual achievements, the team successes and the enthusiasm of everyone connected with the school. I am proud to have been a part of it and will look forward to following the progress of the school and its pupils as they continue to thrive. “I know that I am leaving the legacy of Tettenhall College in safe hands with David Williams, the new Headmaster from January 2014. The ethos and atmosphere of ‘TC’ is already well and truly under his skin and he is looking forward tremendously to being a part of the next chapter in the school’s story.” Tettenhall College is an independent school for 2 to 18 year olds with pupils of all ages benefiting from its enviable reputation for outstanding pastoral care and meeting the needs of the individual. We have enjoyed 150 years of exceptional education, combining traditional values with innovative teaching and excellent pastoral care. This approach has enabled us to be in the top 1% of schools nationally for ‘adding value’ in eight out of the last ten years.

Our first rate facilities and a 33 acre woodland site including a glorious arboretum and a ‘forest school’ enable a very wide range of enrichment activities to take place. We recognise that experiences outside of the classroom can provide deeper understanding, increase selfconfidence, develop new skills and help pupils challenge themselves.

Our next Open Days; Tuesday 21st January 2014 for Sixth Form Entry - 6.30pm Thursday 13th March 2014 all sections of the school 10.00am - 1.00pm & 5.30pm - 7.30pm Open days provide a fabulous opportunity to explore Tettenhall College. All families with children between the ages of 2 to 18 are provided with a wealth of information about the education provided, a chance to experience the school in action and an opportunity to see our superb facilities and grounds. Times can be pre booked by contacting the school or just turn up on the day. Individual tours are also available all year round. We look forward to your visit. WGJS - learning lessons from a sporting legacy There is a concern in many sports of a dearth of new talent in this country. Active children are the lifeblood of our future teams. As Olympic legacies fast fade, there is a concern about participation and the future of sport in schools and in the community. As Head of Wolverhampton Grammar Junior School I talk regularly to teachers and coaches,

and we have all noticed the decline in basic ball skills. We are also concerned about the worrying number of children beginning junior schools unable to swim. Our current generation of children have a range of sporting opportunities and organised activities beyond the dreams of previous generations. But it is also true to say that our children have a multitude of other distractions that compete for their time. Parents are equally hard-pressed as many of them are working long hours with both in full-time work. These are all no doubt contributory factors to a decline in sport outside school. In local cricket leagues, many clubs struggle to raise a team, particularly as children move into secondary schools. The same is true with rugby as squads decline in size.

Capturing children’s sporting interest requires an early investment. In infant and junior years it is vitally important that children try a variety of sports. Undoubtedly there is a cross-fertilization of skills as each sporting experience contributes to a child’s development across a range of sports. Sport plays an important part in life at WGJS. There are opportunities for boys and girls to participate in all that is on offer. Yes there are the immediate benefits of a healthy lifestyle, but equally important are the lessons sport teaches: fair play, modesty in success and acceptance of defeat. I believe the lessons taught through sport are too important to risk and that it why it will always play an integral role in WGJS’s enriched, balanced curriculum.

Andrew Hymer is Head of WGJS, which provides a broad based learning environment for youngsters Years 3 – 6. To find out more, come along to the school’s Open Day on Saturday 25th January 2014. For more details call 01902 392960 or go to www.wgjs.co.uk

Rotary And The V Festival and as soon as the Event finishes on the Sunday evening, a clearup operation is rolled out from midday on the following Monday. In the region of 500 people turn up to carry this out which included a sizeable contingent from local Rotary Clubs, organised by the Rotary Club of Brewood, who have been involved with this tremendously worthwhile project for a number of years.

The V Festival at Weston Park is now a wellestablished event, featuring very prominently in the annual UK Festival Calendar. This year was blessed with dry weather and around 96,000 people of all ages attended. To host such an event involves tremendous detailed organisation

Around 60,000 Festival goers camp under canvas or use their own motorhomes and caravans spread cheek by jowl over five large areas. As soon as vehicles and Festival goers have left everything they leave behind has to be removed and the park returned to its normal appearance. The V Festival Organisers are working hard to try to reduce this waste and encourage campers to take their belongings home with them. After all, people carry their

tents, clothing and supplies in, why cannot they take them home at the end of the festivities? But again this year some 3000 very serviceable tents were abandoned. These were collected plus an enormous amount of bedding, folding chairs and other equipment. Rotarians work in teams late into the evening to collect this equipment together, dismantling tents, packaging them and stockpiling for collection before they are loaded for transport. All of this is taken on, on behalf of International Aid, a charity who convey it in their huge lorries to their depot in Preston where it is sorted, cleaned where necessary, and repacked by their staff who are assisted by inmates from Preston Prison, ready to be distributed to disaster areas wherever they occur around the world and to be used in other humanitarian projects.

This involvement is another example of Rotary working in your community to benefit the needy not only locally, but worldwide, and if you are interested in being involved with a local Rotary Club or just assisting with such worthwhile projects visit www.rotaryclubwolverhampton.co.uk to find out more. 118

A Healthy Outside Starts From The Inside

Is it that time of the year where your child is flying the nest and starting the next chapter of their life? Supporting them during this transition can sometimes be easier said then done. It can be a frustrating time for young adults when they reach 18 years of age and realise that health cover is no longer funded by the state. Regular check ups quickly become a thing of the past and for many, are put to the back of their minds. As a parent even the smallest of sneezes from your teenager can worry you but with them living away from home how do you know they are getting the healthcare they need? Your child could have the best start to life as an independent young adult but everything comes back to them being in good health. 120

What if there was a way you could put your worries aside knowing they have access to healthcare whenever and wherever they need it. Paycare Go gives young adults aged between 18 – 24 years cover for every day healthcare expenditure. It could be anything from dental crowns to new glasses and designer frames, consultation and tests or professional therapies like physiotherapy, acupuncture, reflexology and hypnotherapy. There is also an inoculation and vaccination benefit for those who may be looking to take a gap year. A new university, new location and making new friends, will always represent an exciting time for young adults. But as a parent, your child leaving home will be a time when you worry about how they will adjust to an independent life without you. It’s a phase of their lives where they will learn to cope with issues such as peer pressure, exam stress, accommodation or landlord problems and even dealing with being homesick. Managing everything alone can sometimes

become too much to deal with.  Paycare Go provides a 24 hour, professionally staffed counselling and helpline to lessen such burdens by offering professional advice and extra support when needed. Paycare chief executive, Kevin Rogers said: “We believe Paycare Go provides a great gift idea for parents or even grandparents. Like the famous quote: “a healthy outside starts from the inside,” it’s important to look after your health and give your body the care it deserves. Paycare Go aims to support and protect your child’s every day healthcare needs, especially when they are living away at college or university and have limited finance.” To find out more about Paycare Go, visit the Paycare website at: www.paycare.org where there is also a detailed benefits table. FRAME with… Nigel Babb - Interim Commercial Director, University of Wolverhampton Science Park

Investment and belief in the City of Wolverhampton is starting to look bright with recent announcements: Sainsbury’s will restart work on the Raglan Street site in October; a new office block development in the interchange and the University’s new Science Centre and Business School facilities too. Such investment starts to help put confidence back in to the economy, a key attribute to help us continue to climb out of the recession. This confidence is key for starting up your own business too. While a lot of this confidence is related to the personality and drive of the business owner, a significant portion arises from the nurturing and supportive environment where the business operates from. Recent investments at the University of Wolverhampton Science Park, in the form of the award winning Business Solutions Centre and Visualisation Engagement Centre, help provide such additional support for new start-up companies and firms looking to grow. The SPARK business incubator at the Science Park has already helped many new businesses get off the ground in the Creative Industries Sector thanks to its structured programme of support and subsidised office space. Golf Tips from Peter Baker European Tour and Ryder Cup Star and Head Professional at The South Staffordshire Golf Club. Peter’s playing career spans over 25 years on the European Tour, with Ryder Cup honours and more than 650 tournaments world wide including all of the major championships, and now you can benefit from his many years of experience to improve your golf game. “During this series my aim is to give you the fundamental tips to enable you to improve your game and become a better player.”

Putting (Right Handed Golfer) We’ve looked at The Grip, the Takeaway, Top of the Backswing, the Pitch and Run Shot, Bunker shots and now possibly the most important part of all - Putting. Amateur players often struggle to keep the putter face square through impact resulting with either a pushed or pulled stroke. Here’s a practice drill to help you grove the perfect putting stroke. Firstly, set up a gate of tees on the putting green, slightly wider than the width of a putter. Then practice short putts of up to 6 foot in length, by taking the putter back square within the gate of tees and then through square without hitting the tees. This will groove the short putting action needed to keep the putter face square and pointing at the hole throughout the stroke. On these shorter putts just rock the shoulders keeping the wrist and hands out of the stroke.

Wolverhampton Round Table 17 – Four Peaks Challenge 2013 “The response has been fantastic and we are delighted to report that we have now presented a brand new 9-seater people carrier to Tettenhall Wood School. “We set ourselves a massive target to raise enough money from our Four Peaks Challenge to acquire a vehicle that would help the school integrate the children into mainstream schools and get out and about in the community. We’ve spent most of the summer collecting our pledges and it’s thanks to generous sponsorship from friends, colleagues, clients and local businesses that we’ve been able to achieve our objective. We have raised nearly £25,000. “As you’ll see from the picture opposite, we are not athletic! Climbing Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland, Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales in 42 hours should not be underestimated. Of course, it was a great adventure for the members of Wolverhampton Round Table that will not be forgotten. “The challenge was without doubt far more difficult than we expected and the conditions were terrible, so being able to hand over the keys makes it all worthwhile. 128

“We were left with some very sore bodies and some great memories, but of course we did want to see a lasting legacy from the challenge. Having completed the 1,000 miles of travel and almost 14,000 feet of ascent it has been simply fantastic to see the childrens’ faces when we presented the new minibus to Headmaster Mostyn Mahoney. We set out on this challenge not for our own benefit, but to benefit others and your support has ensured that we’ve been able to achieve our goal of donating a vehicle to Tettenhall Wood School.” Thank you so much from all of us! Get Your Car Ready For Winter With HiQ Wolverhampton

HiQ Wolverhampton is helping the city get ready for winter by offering a range of free car tests and checks to its visitors. Motorists in the city are being invited to take their car along to the garage in Chapel Ash to check that it is road ready for the coming cold months. The HiQ team offer free checks with a no-obligation promise, as it aims to make Wolverhampton roads safer this winter.

The team checks and adjusts the pressure on all five tyres and assesses the tread depth to make sure they’re in the best condition for icy weather. As well as safety, ensuring tyres are in good condition will make the car more fuel efficient - saving more money during the most expensive time of year. Along with tyres, the battery is checked along with the lights and horn to make sure that road users can be seen clearly as the dark nights draw in. The windscreen is checked along with wiper blades and washers. Then the team goes under the bonnet to check the engine oil. The coolant level and anti-freeze gravity is checked and hoses and fasters, radiators and connections are checked for

leaks, making sure the anti-freeze stays exactly where it should be. HiQ Wolverhampton centre manager, Mac Grundy, said: “Winter is a time when many motorists can feel uneasy on the roads. We’re hoping that by giving checks and tests, we can instill confidence into motorists at no cost and with no obligation.” For those that wish to go further than a free check, HiQ offers a tyre fitting service, MOT’s, servicing, diagnostics, exhausts, brakes and batteries. It also employs cutting-edge equipment to ensure the precise alignment and balance of all four wheels which can ensure longer lasting tyres, better handling and more miles for your money.

MINI Countryman.

Irresistible design and unstoppable progress. The MINI Countryman is winning over fresh target groups and attracting increasing numbers of fans among potential buyers of all-wheel drive automobiles. The latest evidence of this is its outstanding performance in the 2013 “Off Road Award”. A reader’s vote held by the car magazine “Off Road” has secured a place on the winner’s podium for the first MINI with four doors, a large tailgate and the optional all-wheel drive system ALL4. The MINI Countryman was ranked second in the subcompact SUV category. This once more reflects the huge and remarkably swift success of the British premium brand as it advances into a new segment, extending the model range to include automobiles with all-wheel drive.  “Off Road” readers have clearly got wind of the fact that the MINI Countryman’s hallmark brand

driving fun is to be had beyond the urban environment, too - and even away from asphalted roads. Their positive vote demonstrates not least an appreciation of the MINI Countryman’s drive and suspension technology. Powerful engines of exemplary efficiency, precise steering and specific suspension settings guarantee superb agility. Then there is the permanent all-wheel drive system specially developed for MINI which uses an electromagnetic centre differential to distribute drive power seamlessly between the front and rear axles. Its electronic management system is integrated directly in the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) control unit, enabling ALL4 to vary drive torque quickly and precisely. The result is not just optimised starting on snow or loose sand and improved forward thrust on slippery surfaces but also enhanced sports-style driving fun on bends. The MINI Countryman’s growing popularity is also reflected in its market success, with over 102,000

sold worldwide in 2012 alone. In fact the successful launch of the 3-door MINI Paceman in March 2013 even gave the brand’s all-wheel drive offensive an additional boost. The distinctive Sports Activity Coupé is likewise available with ALL4 as an optional extra. When the MINI Cooper Countryman ALL4 and the MINI Cooper Paceman ALL4 line up for the start as of July 2013, there will be two petrol and two diesel engines for each model available in conjunction with all-wheel drive, with output ranging from 82 kW/112 bhp to 135 kW/184 bhp. Then there are the two extreme sports models MINI John Cooper Works Countryman and MINI John Cooper Works Paceman, each of which transmits its outstanding engine output of 160 kW/218 bhp to all wheels as standard. The all-wheel drive MINI models are all available as standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and optionally with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The company’s position shows a climb of five places over its 2012 CoolBrands® debut, and is the highest position of any “full-line” automotive brand – describing a car company with a wide range of models. The outright winner was Apple.

This year, Mercedes-Benz has delivered a wealth of new models to UK customers including: The new A-Class compact hatchback; compact CLA four-door coupé; New E-Class family; GL-Class SUV; the stunning new S-Class luxury saloon. The exciting GLA compact SUV will arrive in spring 2014.

around the country are full of the coolest cars we’ve ever made, and we’re tireless in our efforts to bring more innovation, style –and great service of course – to more customers than ever before.” The stunning new A 45 AMG is now available from Mercedes-Benz of Wolverhampton. As well as setting new dynamic benchmarks, the A 45 AMG marks many firsts – it’s the first production car to achieve 181 hp per litre, the first AMG with fewer than six cylinders, the first compact AMG and the first all-wheel drive A-Class in the UK. Powered by an advanced, hand built four-cylinder turbocharged engine it can accelerate from a standstill to 62 mph in just 4.6-seconds – but incredibly, the A 45 AMG can return 40.9 mpg on the combined cycle. Backing up the performance are styling enhancements including a new braking system, springs and dampers are behind twin five-spoke 18-inch wheels. The AMG Drive Unit, allowing the selection of the gears from the centre console, is joined by metal paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel. A unique AMG electronic display located between the instrument dials, DAB and Audio 20 with iPod and Bluetooth connectivity are also fitted as standard. Peter Smith, General Manager at Mercedes-Benz of Wolverhampton added: “Mercedes-Benz has always been one of the most desirable brands in the world. With the impressive choice of New and Approved Used cars and wide range of finance options, there’s never been a better time to drive a Mercedes-Benz.”

The field was studded with local professionals, headed by Peter Baker ex Ryder Cup player and head professional at South Staffs Golf Club, and on behalf of the PGA our own Shaun Ball was the main co-ordinator.Hence it was gratifying that Peter and Shaun were the two finalists, particularly since Peter himself began his golf career at the club! Despite two attempts at the 18th hole to find a winner the two gladiators agreed that a draw was the best solution and the main prize was shared. A fitting end to what was a wonderful exhibition of top class golf much enjoyed by both players and viewers. Peter Baker donated his prize money to the club. Most of the professionals praised the quality of the course, the friendliness of club members, and wished to participate next year. An excellent endorsement of Wrottesley Golf Club for future members. Truly a course endorsed by professional golfers.
