St. Thomas Day The Feast of St. Thomas the Apostle, established in the twelfth century, originally fell on December 21, the day of the winter solstice. Folk customs attached to the saint's day, therefore, reflected both the occurrence of the solstice and the closeness of Christmas. Although the Roman Catholic Church has since moved St. Thomas's Day to July 3, Some Anglicans preserve the December date. The Greek Orthodox Church celebrates the saint's feast on October 6.
Life and Legends of St. Thomas the Apostle Thomas the Apostle (called Didymus which means "the twin") was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, according to theNew Testament. He appears in all four gospels, but is best remembered as doubting Thomas because he doubted Jesus' resurrection when first told (in the Gospel of John), followed later by his confession of faith, "My Lord and my God", on seeing Jesus' wounded body.
According to legend, St. Thomas spread the gospel to the East, venturing as far as India in his quest. There he established a Christian community in the southwestern region known then as Malabar, currently part of the state of Kerala. One story claims that Thomas found and baptized the Three Kings . These three then became India's first bishops. Another tale reports that an Indian king commissioned Thomas to build an opulent palace. Instead, the saint took the money entrusted to him for the project and distributed it to the poor. He died a martyr's death and was buried in Mylapore, near the city of Madras. Artists often depicted the saint kneeling by the side of the risen Christ, verifying Jesus' identity by touching his wounds. Artists have also portrayed him holding a carpenter's rule. In medieval times he was known as the patron saint of architects, masons, and stonecutters. We the St. Thomas family in Kuwait is planning to celebrate St. Thomas day on 5th July, Tuesday at 7.30 pm. at St. Thomas Center. Rev. Georgie Varghese and Rev. From the Vicar .... Dearly beloved in Christ, Greetings to you all in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I am indeed very happy to greet you all through this parish messenger. By the grace of God I reached Kuwait safely and took charge of our parish as the vicar. Thanks to all for your warm welcome and reception. I am so happy to see your wholehearted participation in the worship services and the functions of the organizations. I do congratulate our children who have completed their 10th and 12th successfully. My prayers and wishes to those who are going for higher studies to various parts of the world. Many of our parish members are visiting their native places during holidays. I wish them a very meaningful vacation and safe journey. During the month of July we are meditating on the theme ‘meaning and significance of sacraments’. There are some general points about the meaning and practices of sacraments. • All sacraments are in the name of the triune God and based on scriptures. • God, by his grace gives His blessings to His children through the sacraments. • The minister authorized by the church is the celebrant of all sacraments. The minister serves here as God’s agent on behalf of the church.

The sacraments are means of blessings because of the words and promises of the Lord Jesus Christ related to each of them. • There are five major elements in a sacrament - The celebrant, the element specified for each sacrament, the order of service, the recipient and the declared purpose of the sacrament. The scripture portions for our reading and meditations for the month of July are concentrating on three sacraments such as baptism, marriage and ordination. Through baptism we are uniting with Christ and identifying with the death and resurrection of Christ. Uniting with Christ also means uniting with the body of Christ, ie. Church. Marriage is the institution designed by God in which a man and woman are joined together to live in family fulfilling their God given mission. Let us transform our family as the miniature of the kingdom of God. The sacrament of ordination is for setting apart a person for fulltime ministry for Christ. Ordained priests are ambassadors of Christ in the society. Let us dedicate our children for fulltime ministry. May our God help us to lead our sacramental life effectively and meaningfully.
