ST THOMAS THE APOSTLE NEWS
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here we are at the end of the Autumn Term with the Christmas holidays fast approaching. There’s no such thing as a quiet term at St Thomas the Apostle College and this term has been particularly action packed for our students from Year 7 right through to Year 13. There is such amazing talent in our school and such enthusiasm for learning in and beyond the classroom.
Sport is flourishing as normal, with our football and basketball teams doing outstandingly well in their different competitions. Recently our Year 7, 8 and 9’s sat their Ranking Exams and many students were ecstatic with the improvements that they made. We a held spectacularly impressive Sixth Form Open Evening which was attended by over 300 visitors. In addition to many other events, we recently held our Christmas Advent Concert at the St Thomas the Apostle Church. As usual the Music Department produced another outstanding performance. There many a parent in the audience who shed a tear when their son or daughter performed. Much praise should be given to all the students who participated and in my opinion all of them were truly excellent.
On our return from the Christmas holidays, our Year 13 students will sit their Mock exams (Wednesday 4th January – Friday 13th January). Many of those students will also be sitting formal Vocational exams that will be used to assess their final Vocational qualifications in the summer and ultimately their places at University. I am sure you will help us in ensuring that each and every one of our students sitting their exams are as well prepared as possible.
Reminder that school resumes on Wednesday 4th January 2023 at 8:35am.
hope
have a very happy holiday
not withstanding!) however you and your family plan to celebrate.

This term, the community at STAC have come together to organise Christmas hampers for those in need. Students in every year group generously donated items to make up over 200 hampers to be gifted to our community this Christmas. Creating so many hampers is a huge achievement, and we have STAC students to thank for their hard work and dedication getting the hampers put together; from collecting boxes, to wrapping them after school and organising the many donations, there have been students supporting every step of the way. In a big event after school last week, students from all year groups came together to pack and wrap the hampers ready for donating, which was a lovely way to celebrate the hard work that had gone in to getting them organised. The hampers are being delivered this week by staff here at STAC, and we hope they will bring joy to our community this Christmas. A special mention goes to the following boys who gave up a huge amount of their time to help:
Mohamed Koroma
Daniel Adefusi
Reece Campbell

Carol Singing at PWC
On the final Tuesday of term, I was joined by a number of our esteemed singers in Years 7 and 8 on a trip to PWC offices at More London where we performed a set of Christmas songs and carols.
A huge well done to the boys who sang brilliantly, before enjoying hot chocolate courtesy of the office manager!

Annual Advent Carol Service 2022
On Monday evening we gathered at St Thomas the Apostle Church for our annual Advent Carol Service. A good crowd of parents, staff and parishioners braved the freezing conditions to join with around 80 students to look forward to the birthday of Christ through readings and music. Year 12 students Davina and Lily opened the service accompanied by the Senior Strings singing Ms Troth's beautiful arrangement of the French Carol 'NoelNouvelet'and there was a moving performance of 'MaryDidYouKnow'by the newly-formed 6th Form Girls Vocal Ensemble lead by Miss Streule. The Senior Strings took us for a ride on Santa's sleigh with Prokofiev's 'Troika' and as always, the Gospel Choir and Miss Christian-John lifted our spirits with wonderful performances of 'Hosanna'and 'SoulfulHallelujah'- a Gospel version of Handel's great masterpiece reminding us that Christ was born in order to remain with us as our saviour. In between, we reflected on the Gospel readings about Christ's birth and the real meaning of Christmas and all joined in singing the favourite Christmas carols. By the time the Big Band played us out with popular classics such as 'HaveYourselfaMerryLittleChristmas'everyone was truly in the Christmas spirit! A big thank you to all who participated and helped out in any way and in particular to Fr Ray and St Thomas the Apostle Church for hosting and warmly welcoming us.

Year 7 Grandparents Christmas Lunch
-Pope Francis (2016)
On Wednesday 14th December, 18 Year 7 students brought their grandparents in to STAC to join us in celebrating our annual Christmas lunch. In our wider community we have seen over the years the vital role that so many grandparents have played in the lives of our students; this has been accompanied with an increasing rise in multi-generational living. We feel it is important to open our doors and invite grandparents in to spend time with their grandsons and to witness the environment that will shape their grandsons for the next five or seven years. Grandparents and boys were given a phenomenal performance by our 6th Form girls’ choir and then joined in a sing-along with an ensemble from our boys gospel choir, accompanied by Mr Morgan. It was a pleasure to see so many smiles and to see the happiness that this occasion gave to so many.
Thank you to all those involved in making the occasion one to remember.

STAC Christmas Card Competition 2022
STAC wishes one and all a very happy Christmas and a joyful New Year, once again celebrating and sharing our students creativity with all our community, parents, feeder schools and Governors.
After great deliberation from the vast range of student submissions, we have successfully chosen Maureen Ekugwum’s design in Year 12 to represent our school. She will receive many points for her house with an addition gift for being the successful winner this year.
Congratulations Maureen for your wonderful entry inspiring others to follow in subsequent years.

Restore the Music Big Give
Two Year 12 musicians, Qudus and Jesse, have become quite at home at the Steinway Showroom in Central London! Following their most recent invitation to visit, they were both featured on a promotional video for Restore the Music UK as part of their latest fundraising drive. We were lucky to secure a grant from RTM a few years ago, which further enhanced our music provision at STAC. The older musicians in our school are an inspiration for our younger musicians, who really do look up to them. You can have a watch of their performance by scanning the QR code below.

School Uniform & Winter Coats
We were left with a large amount of unclaimed lost property after displaying it all on the 25th of November.
We have therefore decided to wash it and we would like to give you the opportunity to choose items for your son if they are in need of uniform or a winter coat.
You are welcome to come in on Friday 16th December between 9:00am and 1:00pm if you would like to choose uniform for your son from the main reception.
All items left will be donated to charity.

Year 7 Rewards Trip | Hollywood Bowl
On Wednesday 7th December, 30 Year 7 were taken to Hollywood Bowl in Surrey Quays for their final reward event of the term. For many of the boys it was their first time bowling. The boys were a credit to their families and school and behaved impeccably. I look forward to seeing which Year 7 put themselves in to contention for the rewards trips coming up after Christmas.

Year 8 Rewards Trip | Hollywood Bowl
The rewards trip on 9th December was an incredibly fun experience as me and my friends had an intense round of bowling. The highest score in my group was 88 and I believe the highest is 94.
You should work hard for these types of rewards trips because they really pay off in the end and you could have a wonderful time playing with your friends.

KS3 Drama Club Trip to the Theatre
On Tuesday 6th of December KS3 Drama club took a trip to Mountview to see a terrific re-imagining of Romeo and Juliet. The performance was full of music, physical theatre, and a lot of laughs – which is remarkable considering it is one of Shakespeare’s tragedies. The students were mesmerised by the show and the confetti canons and the balloons! They had a great time and came out singing praises for the theatre, Shakespeare, and the excellent acting from the cast. We had a great time!

Jack Petchey Foundation Environmental Award
Jeremie Adeyemi recently won the Jack Petchey Foundation Environmental award. Jeremie was nominated after his positive contributions to sustainable projects at STAC. In October, Jeremie and a number of students took part in the Southwark Climate Action Schools meeting whereby Jeremie raised his concerns around the safety of bike routes in Southwark. Jeremie has recently been involved in the replanting of 15 trees donated to STAC by the Woodland Trust. Jeremie is also set to take part in the Eco Leaders project run by Veolia and Southwark Council, commencing January 2023.

CWISL LITERACY QUIZ
On November 25th we participated in an exciting quest to shape our knowledge at Dulwich College. We tested our knowledge of children’s books and learned ways to improve. Unfortunately, we did not win this year, but it reinforced our desire to win next year. While we were there, we met some children’s authors who read some excerpts from their books to inspire us to read them. They also signed books which was very exciting. We had a great time and it really inspired us to read more!

Blue Friday
On Friday 9th December, the whole school community came together to celebrate the life of Christopher Ogbechie, a former STAC student who sadly lost his battle to cancer in November 2019 soon after sitting his A-Level exams with outstanding grades. We remember Christopher fondly. Christopher encompassed all of the qualities that characterise the best of STAC: a loyal friend, an open and enquiring mind and a kind heart. We often recall what amazing qualities he had. His close friends and family are always in our prayers particularly when we remember him on Blue Friday. For those who are unsure why its called Blue Friday - Christopher was a Chelsea fan and his favourite colour was blue! We raised £246.50p for the Royal Marsden who cared for Christopher.

Young Professionals Females of the Future Conference
Some Year 12 and 13 girls had the opportunity to attend the Females of the Future Event in London on 30th November. BT, UBS and PwC attended with another five global who delivered a series of panel discussions, keynote presentations from senior female leaders with lots of networking opportunities!
We found this experience very insightful as young developing women, it has exposed me to different career paths, for instance, technology, law, business management. We were able to learn from affluent female leaders, who are dominating top industries. It was an amazing opportunity to hear how each woman got to where they are today and definitely encouraged us to always persevere even in the face of adversities. I was able to build on my networking skills and stay in touch with some industry professionals.

Spotlight on Enrichment
One of our most popular enrichments is a yoga class that happens at the Bussey Building in Peckham. This has been a long running enrichment that has been a great success with Year 12, seeing many students continue their yoga practice once the programme is complete. Yogarise is a fantastic space for our students to unwind and engage in a discipline which many of them had never encountered before.
Many thanks to Sam at Yogarise for hosting!

STAC Ethos Award
At STAC, there are a wide range of helpful activities a student can do to attain their STAC Ethos Award: from being a teaching assistant in a subject department, to leading assemblies to different year groups and even supporting teachers and students in after school clubs! For my STAC Ethos Award, I have currently been helping the Librarian every Tuesday afternoon in the school’s Library, arranging books and recording them into the system. In doing so, I feel that this opportunity has helped me become more organised as a person and it makes me feel a sense of achievement in knowing that I have helped the younger students in the school in some way by simply just making their study space tidier. Also, for STAC Ethos, I help during Breakfast Club every Monday morning, talking to students and asking them how their day has been so far. I have also taken active part in the Sixth Form’s Open Evening, helping in the Chemistry department, talking and interacting with students and parents who were looking forward to applying to the school. In the future, I aspire to have a career in the medical field and interacting with patients is very key; by helping with the Open Evening, I believe that this experience has given me exposure to how I may interact with various patients and be able to speak confidently to them. These key skills such as organisation, dedication and confidence are important and are the basis of a successful student, and I can build these skills through my STAC Ethos activities!

Oxbridge Update
It has been a busy Autumn Term and the 6th form team have been helping both the Year 12s and Year 13s students reach for the stars and unleash their potential. Firstly we have had some fantastic news with our Year 13 students applying for Oxbridge courses. Firstly 14 students took on the challenge of the Oxbridge entrance examinations which requires a large amount of preparation in itself and with some exams lasting almost 3 hours in length! So far Gabriel Basusi-Asaam , Sheldon Akuffo, Reece Asante, Heyaballe Yonnas and Sadat Ahmed have been selected for interviews and we wish them luck with this process!
Keeping up with Oxbridge news, St thomas the Apostle have also begun preparing the Year 12 intake for their road to both Oxbridge and Medicine. Students with high enough GCSE grades were asked to apply for the programme and have been completing tasks to help improve their chances of selection. The picture below was taken just last week, where students were tasked with finding out from each other what “ super-curricular” additional tasks they have completed. All these students were also provided the opportunity to take home a laptop in order to help them study and organise their enrichment activities to gain the experiences needed for these highly selective courses.

The Earth Shot Prize
The Earth shot prize is a prize awarded to creative individuals that have created an initiative on how to slow down climate change by removing carbon dioxide, a gas that causes an increase in the greenhouse effect, from the atmosphere. The earth shot prize award was in Boston and had many celebrities attending such as Prince William and Kate Middleton. Overall, there are 5 winners of the earth shot prize and these 5 winners were all awarded £1 million to support and continue their sustainable initiative. One of the winners of the earth shot prize was 44.01 which is in Oman. This Environmental work was initiated to remove excess carbon dioxide in the air, they did this by reacting Carbon dioxide with water which mineralised it and then injected it into periodate rock this accelerates the sedimentation and natural process of mineralisation which normally takes millions of years. As earth does not have millions of years to recover from excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere this initiative is extremely helpful in decreasing carbon dioxide levels. Overall, initiatives such as 44.01 creates hope for the world and the General future of earth. This is available to watch on BBC iPlayer BBC iPlayer - The Earthshot Prize 2022

Philosophy Conference
On Thursday 1st of December, I, alongside other yr12 and 13 Philosophy and Ethics students, went to a conference featuring the renowned philosopher, Peter Vardy. The trip was not only informative in providing us with knowledge outside the normal Philosophy curriculum to apply when writing essays but was also a refreshing experience in leaving our classrooms to gain insight on topics such as Religious Experience, Knowledge of God, and normative ethics such as Natural Law, that we would not usually find in a textbook. I feel like all students who attended the trip found it extremely beneficial and interesting; the conference will definitely help us when drafting essays.

Investment Simulation Program
On the 14th of November, a group of 32 economics students, including myself, travelled to Alleyn’s School to participate in an investment simulation program, from which I placed second among hundreds of students from 10 different schools. Initially, we were each given a laptop where we observed and interacted with a simulated active stock market with functioning businesses such as Tesla. We were each assigned a role as an asset manager with our job being to make investment decisions to grow our finances and portfolio. After 30 minutes, you would switch roles and become an investment banker, whose job it is to financially advise other students and offer bids for selling or buying stocks to help them raise money. Unfortunately, this led to multiple of our fellow STAC peers being scammed by other students from different schools, as they clearly did not know what they were doing.
A live simulated newsfeed gave new information every few minutes that would affect the value of the different stocks and we had to react quickly to the news to maximise our positions. The tactic I used to grow my portfolio as an asset manager was to invest in TESLA from the very beginning (which put me into instant debt). Eventually, I traded the stocks as soon as their value spiked, as TESLA’s stock values were consistently fluctuating, so the timing was crucial. During this time, I also had several stocks that I had held onto as long-term investments because I knew they were more stable and hoped they would gradually increase in price, which they did. As an investment banker, I bought stocks and offered multiple student's different prices for them. The plan I used was to overhear what prices other investment bankers were selling at and then price my offers slightly less, which led to a lot of asset managers choosing my bids. I also attempted to scam a few people but to no avail. All of this led to me placing 2nd overall out of hundreds who competed in this program, winning me a $1000 discount on Amplify’s summer investment internship. This programme helped me broaden my knowledge into the field of investment and banking, something which will serve as immense help for the future career I intend on going into. If presented with this investment simulation opportunity, I would highly recommend taking part; you will learn a lot about how to invest and bank, while having fun with your friends and potentially rob them of millions!

Bank of England Talk
On Wednesday 23rd of November, we were thrilled to welcome Aakash Mankodi, a Senior Economist at the Bank of England and author of their Monetary Policy Report. Aakash spoke to our Year 13 Economists about the role of the Bank of England in managing the UK’ s economy and their key objective of keeping inflation low and stable. Our students gained useful insights into the Bank’s projections for the UK economy’s performance – with inflation expected to fall sharply from the middle of next year but recession to last until the second half of 2024! However, due to the unpredictability of the duration and intensity of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, estimates, even for the Bank of England, become difficult to predict accurately. All exciting points for the students to write about with confidence in their final exams.
Ela, Evander and Jesse in particular asked intelligent questions about financial regulations, shadow banking and quantitative easing, whilst our students’ responses to Aakash’s questions left him praising, in his own words: “really impressive students” – monetary policy is certainly a favourite topic of theirs, and a live one!
It was also great for our students to hear about Aakash’s journey to working with the Bank of England; having spent his first 12 years in India and then completing secondary school in London, he studied hard to receive an offer to study Economics at the LSE and went on to gain a place on the Bank of England’s Graduate Program. Aakash stressed the importance for our students at this stage in their studies to build their skills rather than focussing on a particular career – nonetheless, I am sure he has inspired at least a few of them to aspire to work with the Bank of England in the future.
We
Mr O. Oozeerally Acting Head of

look forward to welcoming Aakash again next year, and wonder how different the economy will be then!

We had a very competitive house event on 24th November . Our boys flexed their mathematical muscles and competed in 4 teams to win the point for their house. Rigby started very strong dropping no marks in the first 4 rounds with Jones Gunstone and Giiffith at this point being close behind. As the event continued Jones leaped ahead and looked like clear winners. A late charge by Gunstone seemed like it might threaten take the victory, however Jones managed to cling on and were worthy winners.
Points: 1) Jones: 430 2) Gunstone: 370 3) Rigby: 260 4) Griffith: 170
Students across all year groups took part in the annual Christmas quiz on Thursday 1st December, competing against each other in 7 different rounds in order to win points for their house. Students showed off their knowledge of all things festive, but it was the Rigby team who managed to get the most questions correct and win 400 points for their house.
Points: 1) Rigby: 460 2) Jones: 370 3) Gunstone: 230 4) Griffith: 130
