FEBRUARY 6, 2011 — FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME My friends, today Jesus tells His disciples — and us — that we are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. We are, you and me. To be so trusted with the message that Jesus came to convey, the message He was crucified for preaching — this is an honor and an awesome responsibility. We don’t come to Mass just for comfort or inspiration or enlightenment. We come for what we need to comfort others, inspire others, enlighten others. How do we do this? We had a great turnout at the January Beautification Party. John Cantalini and Tim Corbett continued to clean up the planting beds around the church, Rosalyn Jinkens cleaned up the sidewalk on Marion, Tim Allen took out a holly, Phebe Jewell cleaned out ivy by the playfield, and I tried to stay out of everyone's way. Our next event is February 19 when we'll keep on removing invasive species and sprucing up the grounds, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Come for as long as you can. WELCOME! MILTON VASQUEZ Milton Vasquez (new Business Manager) I was born and raised the youngest of eleven in New York City, New York. I moved to Seattle in 1991, and lived in the nearby Leschi neighborhood for approximately 10 years. I began working at various prestigious Northwest companies such as Microsoft and SAFECO (now Liberty Mutual). In total, I have 20 years of accounting and finance-related experience. I attended both Pace University and University of Phoenix, where I received a Bachelors degree in Business Management. I was unemployed for a year and one month until the Business Manager opportunity presented itself recently. The opportunity has given me a chance to participate in my faith even more, and at a place which supports my strong belief. The Business Manager position supports various types of assistance to a large group of staff, volunteers, and parishioners. The bake sale will take place in the St. Therese Social Hall on Sunday, February 13, 2011, after the 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM Masses. The proceeds from this event will allow the Ladies Auxiliary to continue charitable work in the community. . Hope to see you there!
The Saint Vincent dePaul Conference at St. Therese has operated for the past 78 years. It has serviced this parish’s ministry through the Great Depression of the 30’s and up to the great recession of these past couple of years. We face many challenges but offer much hope to the clients of our community whom we serve on behalf of the parish. As you read some of the highlights of our 2010 Annual report there are some important trends to pay attention to. · · · ·
Home Visits: 238 Clients Served: 530 Estimated hours of volunteer service: 2,129 $29,786 spent in our local community, $500 for Haitian relief.
Income has declined. Requests for help have increased. Home visits and people served are up considerably over prior years. This is not surprising, considering the state of the economy and the conditions in our community. Please consider making a regular contribution to the SVDP collection. This monthly collection on the third week of the month is our major source of funding to carry out the mission and ministry of the parish. Outside funding through corporate matching programs or directed funding through the United Way Agency can have a positive impact on the level of help we can offer. Please consider participating in matching programs of your employers. This will make a difference. The bottom line is that we face a very challenging year. Tight funding with high demand for services is only one of the challenges. Another challenge we face is recruiting new Vincentians to the calling of those in need. As in our reading this weekend from Isaiah. “Share your bread with the hungry; Shelter the oppressed and the homeless: Clothe the naked when you see them and do not turn your back on your own.” The most experienced and senior members of SVDP have carried the load of this ministry over the years, but they are starting to slow down. Please consider joining us. Ask a representative of SVDP about our ministry. Find the joy in service to our community and the face of Christ in the needy. SACRAMENTAL INFORMATION Baptism
The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated communally, in the context of the Sunday Eucharist. We celebrate baptisms of young children quarterly at all of our weekend Masses. First time parents/ guardians are asked to participate in a Baptism Preparation Class to update their understanding of Baptism, the important responsibilities of Christian parenting, and the many ways our parish supports families. To reserve a date for your child’s Baptism, please contact Mary Lou Colasurdo. Our next scheduled Baptism dates in 2011 are April 30th-May 1st, & June 25-26th.
The Church looks on marriage as a “covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life” (Catechism 1601). In its understanding of marriage, the Church looks back to the union between man and woman ordained by God in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 1-2).
First Eucharist At about age 7, children can begin to prepare to receive communion, the Body and Blood of Christ, for the first time. In conjunction with the new Archdiocesan guidelines, preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion is a two-year process that includes preparation for First Reconciliation. Reconciliation The Church Fathers sometimes called this sacrament “the more difficult Baptism.” St. Ambrose drew a parallel between Reconciliation and Baptism: “There are water and tears: the water of Baptism and the tears of repentance.” The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated on Saturdays, by appointment before Mass in the Reconciliation Chapel, located across from the west facing door of the church. Communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated two times a year in preparation for Christmas and Easter.
Confirmation The Sacrament of Confirmation is, with Baptism and Eucharist, one of the three sacraments of initiation; Confirmation completes and “confirms” the grace of Baptism. Through the anointing with the sacred chrism the baptized person is “enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit,” and more than ever “obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed” (Catechism 1285).
Christ worked His first miracle in the context of a wedding feast. In the Sacrament of Matrimony, the married couple become, in their unity and in their love for one another, “an efficacious sign of Christ’s presence” (Catechism 1613). Couples wishing to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage should contact the parish eight months prior to the desired date. Preparation for celebrating and living this sacrament is required.
Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick - formerly known as ‘last rites’ - is no longer considered a sacrament only for those at the point of death. Instead, this healing sacrament is for all those who are facing major surgery, chronic illness, or the weakness that comes with age. Communal celebrations of the sacrament are celebrated in the Advent and Lenten Season. It is also celebrated any time there is a serious illness or health crisis.
