A Tribute to the Daring Salesian Missionaries The Pioneers who carried the charism of Don Bosco to North East India

On the Occasion of the Bi-Centenary Celebration of the Birth of Don Bosco

Message Dear confreres, For us, this August is very special, in as much as in this month we launch ourselves into the bicentennial year of the birth of our father and founder Don Bosco. I would think it very opportune that we reflect this month on Don Bosco, who embodies for us the living example of the perfect witness of the radical approach of the Gospel, in being mystics, prophets and servants in our apostolate for the young of our region. The divine mission of our founder was made known to him early on in his life. He was indeed sent by God to be the witness to the loving kindness and tender care that the Divine Shepherd has for His flock. In his first dream, he is told that he should bring about the transformation “not through blows, but through kindness…”. He is assured that he will be given a teacher who will help him to transform the vicious wolves around him into gentle lambs. Our founder understood the significance of his first dream as the years passed and he became the priest John Bosco (Don Giovanni Bosco). His initial prison ministry helped him open his eyes to the social realities around him, and come to grips with a hostile society that did not look kindly on the thousands of unemployed youngsters roaming the cities of his time, looking for employment and shelter from the harsh elements around them. The finger of God, in the person of his spiritual director, pointed out this section of society as his specific field of apostolate. The power of the Spirit enabled him to stay firm in his decision to devote his life to these helpless needy youngsters, when it was easy for him to opt for a comfortable life of assured security and ease as the chaplain of a hospice for women. He had the courage to stand up for his “ragamuffins” whom he recognised as the vicious wolves of his childhood dream, to be transformed into gentle lambs. We, my dear confreres, owe our existence today as a province to this great prophetic vision of our father and founder. He was the perfect mystic, prophet and servant in his day to his needy youngsters; he gave his entire life for them, lived for them and loved them. “It is enough for me to know that you are young, to love you. I have promised God that I would give of myself to my last breath for my poor boys” (cf. C. 1) was his slogan in life. The power behind this total commitment was his constant trust in the Lord, that complete abandonment into the hands of the One who entrusted his life's mission to him. In addition he allowed himself to be led and guided constantly by the helper and teacher who was given to him in his first dream, the Mother of Jesus who was always his Madonna. I strongly recommend that we as communities find more time for this divine intimacy, in silent adoration and prayer. These are not times that are lost from the apostolate, but are the times that give us the inner nourishment to be truly effective in our vocation to be witnesses as mystics and prophets to the radical approach of the Gospel towards the needy youngsters who are entrusted to our care. May our Blessed Mother assumed into heaven lead us along the way of our mission to the needy young of our region and in the way of educating and forming the young with love that she taught Don Bosco, our father and founder. With the assurance of my prayers for you all, as I rely on your powerful prayers.

Editorial This Special Issue of the Newsline is dedicated to the valiant missionaries who toiled the length and breadth of the North East to spread the message of the Gospel and the charism of Don Bosco among the different tribes of people. As we are approaching the bicentennial of Don Bosco's birth, which will be celebrated on August 16, 2015. It is a very special event for us, for all the Salesian Family, and for the whole Salesian Movement, which requires an intense and profound process of preparation, so that it may prove fruitful for all of us, for the Church, for the young, and for the society. Don Bosco had made it his task to help young people to build up a good future. His methods of guiding young people and telling them how to achieve this target were different according to circumstances. However, they always were successful. The pioneer missionaries carried this exemplary action and attitude with them which is witnessed in the Salesians' life and work up to this day.

Are we prepared for the challenges and future of the youth we serve as faithful alterego of Don Bosco? Strenna 2013 calls for “drawing upon the spiritual experience of Don Bosco, in order to walk in holiness according to our specific vocation”. Newsline invites each Salesians to enter into a journey of self discovery to the roots of Salesian identity.

2014 AUGUST

The lives and works of the first Salesian Missionaries was a true testament of living Don Bosco's 'charism' wherever they were. The missions and institutions they set up spoke eloquently Don Bosco's motto “Da mihi animas cetera tolle”. The commemoration of the bi-centenary birth of Don Bosco calls for a re-dedication of the Salesian Charism in our lives to the same missionary zeal and dedication of the first missionaries. Don Bosco should be reborn in the 21st century North East through each one of us.

HISTORICAL OUTLINE OF THE ORATORY OF

ST. FRANCIS DE SALES

NEWSLINE, GUWAHATI PROVINCE

(Draft regulations for the boys Oratory of St Francis de Sales in Turin in the Valdocco district – Historical Outline written around 1854 for his own close helpers. This is the first document offering the broad details of the beginnings of the work at Valdocco)

4

This Oratory, a gathering of young people on Sundays and holy days, began in the Church of St Francis of Assisi. For many years during the summertime, Rev. Fr Cafasso  used to teach catechism every Sunday to bricklayers' boys in a little room attached to the sacristy of the aforementioned Church. The heavy workload this priest had taken on caused him to interrupt this work which he loved so much. I took it up towards the end of 1841, and I began by gathering two young adults in that same place who were in serious need of religious instruction. These were joined by others, and during 1842 the number went up to twenty, and sometimes twenty-five. From these beginnings I learned two very important truths: first, that in general young people are not bad in themselves but more often than not they become such through contact with evil companions; second, that even these bad youngsters, if separated one from the other, are susceptible to great moral change.

In 1843 the catechism classes continued on the same footing and the number increased to fifty, the most that the place assigned to me could accommodate. All the while, while visiting the prisons of Turin, I was able to verify that the  poor unfortunates committed to that place of punishment are generally poor young men who come into the city from far away either because they need to find work, or encouraged by some rascally companions. These young people are left to themselves particularly on Sundays and Holy days and spend the little money they earn during the week on games [of chance] or on sweetmeats. This is the beginning of many vices; in no time at all, these young people, who were good, are found to be at risk themselves and putting others at risk. Nor can the prisons better them in any way, because while detained there they learn more refined ways of doing evil so that when they are released they become worse. I turned therefore to this class of youngsters as the most abandoned and at risk; and during the week, either with promises or with little gifts, I tried to win over more pupils. I succeeded, and their number

But the community life characteristic of a place like the Pastoral Institute of St Francis of Assisi (Convitto), the silence and good order required by the services conducted in that public and very well attended Church, got in the way of my plans. Dr Guala Luigi (1775-1848), teacher and theologian, Rector of the church of St Francis of Assisi, and founder of the Pastoral Institute (Convitto ecclesiastico) encouraged me to persevere, nevertheless I clearly perceived the need for new premises. Because religious instruction occupies the young people for only a certain period of time, after which they need some outlet: hikes, games. Providence arranged that in late October 1844 I should be appointed to The Refuge (Rifugio) as spiritual director. I invited my boys to come and visit

me at my new residence and the following Sunday they gathered there in much larger numbers than usual. My room served both as oratory and playground. What a sight! No chair, table or anything else in the room could escape the attack of that friendly invasion. Meanwhile, I and the Rev. Dr Borel, who from then on became the Oratory's staunchest supporter, had chosen a room that was intended as dining room and common room for the priests working at the Refuge, and that seemed big enough for our purposes. We adapted it as a chapel. The Archbishop  gave his kind approval, and on the day of Mary's Immaculate Conception (December 8, 1844), the chapel we had long hoped for was blessed, with the faculty of celebrating the holy sacrifice of the Mass, and of giving Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament. The news of a chapel destined exclusively for the young, the liturgical services prepared especially for them, a bit of open space to romp around in, proved to be powerful attractions, so that our church, which began to be called 'Oratory' at that time, became quickly overcrowded. We managed do as well as we could. Catechism classes were held in every corner: in rooms, kitchen and corridors.

increased greatly, so that, when larger premises were placed at my disposal in the summer of 1844, I found myself at times with some eighty youths around me. I experienced great happiness at seeing myself surrounded by pupils who behaved as I wanted, all of them started on a job, and whose conduct both on weekdays and Sundays I could somehow vouch for. As I looked over them, I could visualise one of them returned to parents from whom he had run away, another placed with an employer, and all of them well on the way to learning their religion.

Events and Calendar 2014 - 2015

1. World Events

6

The calendar for the 2014-2015 Bicentenary includes events that will involve the congregation worldwide. They will be of different kinds. Some are addressed to specific individuals such as experts in history and pedagogy; others to groups such as the young people of the Salesian Youth Movement; the Salesian Family; Salesian Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops; and missionaries. There are also occasions intended for civil and religious authorities and the general public. 2. Exposition of the Shroud in Turin On the occasion of the Bicentenary and precisely because of the commemoration of the birth of Don

Bosco, Archbishop Cesare Nosiglia, Archbishop of Turin, has announced that the Holy Shroud will be on display in Turin for 45 days between Easter and the end of the Bicentenary celebrations. In reference to the time chosen for the display, the Archbishop explained: "The opening of the Exposition at Easter time leads us to reflect on the death and resurrection of the Lord. For believers, the Shroud, which was a death-shroud, becomes a witness that evokes very effectively the victory of the Lord of life." Archbishop Nosiglia Bishop added a further reflection on the extraordinary nature of this Exposition in 2015 on the occasion of the Bicentenary of the Birth of Don Bosco: " Coming in 2015, it connects with the Salesian Jubilee. This is an anniversary that means a lot for Turin and the surrounding area, because it is here we find the roots

of the holiness of Don Bosco and the experience of the sons of Don Bosco." The Exposition is an event distinct from the Salesian celebrations, but it is also closely connected in "a climate of fraternal and mutual cooperation." 3. Visit of Pope Francis For these two reasons, Pope Francis has been invited to Turin. Regarding his visit the Archbishop says: "We are confident that Pope Francis will come to pray before the sacred Linen and to honour St. John Bosco, setting a seal upon a remarkable year. The Holy Father has accepted our invitation and that of the Salesians, but for now no date has been fixed." 4. Expo 2015 Milan

5. National Events Finally there will be national events in the various countries in which the Salesian Congregation is involved in educational and preventive activity, in the style of Don Bosco. These will involve mainly young people, the laity and the Salesian Family. In Italy in particular, the provinces, in coordination with each other, are planning events in the major cities. The official start of the celebrations in Italy will be on Saturday, 24 January 2015 in Turin. This is the Feast of St. Francis de Sales, patron of the Salesian Congregation, which is officially entitled the Society of St. Francis de Sales. -Source: ANS

2014 AUGUST

In the course of the Bicentenary year, from 1 May to 31 October, Expo 2015 will take place in Milan. The theme is "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life." It is a global occasion in which the congregation will participate with thirty events from various parts of the Salesian world. It will be an opportunity for us to promote educational issues which are part of the commitment of the Congregation: Development Education, Global Citizenship, Volunteering, and Education and Human Rights. It will also offer an opportunity to approach the theme of EXPO from an educational perspective: nourish the body, nourish the mind, nourish life and nourish the planet.

Economically poor, there are still very many children who are not attending school. Education is the greatest need. There are people who still need to be enlightened about the importance of educating the children. Economic backwardness is also another factor that discourages people from sending children to school. Accessibility to higher education is not available as the colleges are situated far away. ANNUAL YOUTH MEET 2014 Two hundred youth took part in the Annual Youth Meet from 27th July to 30th July at the parish. The youth meet began with a prayer service conducted by Fr. Bivan Mukhim, the Associate Director of DBI.

The youth were made aware of the greatness of the Lord and the humanness of person. The theme of the prayer service was “Our God is an Awesome God. Fr. Tomey Anikuzhikattil, the Parish Priest and Fr. Lawrence Nongkseh, the Asst. Parish Priest and the sisters were also present for the prayer service. Later the Parish Priest welcomed the youth to the Annual Youth Meet. The youth animation was conducted by Fr. Paul Rabha, the province youth build animator and the staff from DBI.

Junior Priests Meet:

From “MAINTENANCE MODE” to “MISSION MODE”

Thirty Eight young priests from the provinces of Guwahati and Silchar met together at Siloam, Barapani for the Junior Priest Meet from 14th to 16th July 2014. The young priests shared experiences of their priesthood and their encounter they had in their ministries. The meeting was animated by Rev Fr. George Palamattam SDB, Director of Siloam: A Centre for Transformation and Leadership Resource. On the first day of the meet the junior priests shared about the good reasons why they came for the meet, their most fulfilling moments they encountered in

their ministries and the learnings' they had about God, people and self through these experiences. During the sharing many expressed that a meeting like this helps one to be rejuvenated, re-energized, recharged and be reconnected with other young priests and above all to learn from the experiences of each other. It was also a moment to get away from the busy schedule and to relax and to enjoy the laid back atmosphere and to breathe the fresh air of the pine groves of Barapani Lake.

has got two aspects namely Simon (the human) and Peter (divine vocation). Both Simon and Peter coexist in a priest but effort should be made to make Peter more prominent over Simon as the priesthood is lived out every moment of a priest's life. He further emphasized that a committed prayer life and uncompromising disciplined life are ways of making Peter stands out. Fr. George Palamattam who animated the two days session said that the area that is often neglected in priestly ministry is that of educating people to family life. To substantiate this he showed the new priests the movie “Courageous” which highlighted the importance of being closely knit together among the members of a family. - Fr. Francis Xavier Lakra (INS) - Fr. Jimmy T. Sangma (ING)

Fr. Philip Barjo, former provincial and former Novice Master of the undivided province of Guwahati also animated the young priests. In his lively interaction he shared his vast experience as a priest. He also said that “As junior priests you may not always be given the obedience according to what you have expected but you need to adapt yourself to the situation.” In order to get the best out of their priestly ministry he exhorted the junior priests to put on the “Mission Mode” and not the “Maintenance Mode”. 'Most of the times we are happy to maintain the status quo but as new priests entering the community we are expected to bring new enthusiasm, new dynamism, new energy etc., to the mission.' Fr. Philip said. Rev Fr. George Maliekal, the provincial of the Salesian province of Silchar interacted with the young priests and made them realize that priesthood

R.I.P FR. SEBASTIAN KAROTEMPREL (15.09.1931 – 20.07.2014) (The Provincial and the confreres of Guwahati Province are profoundly saddened at the demise of Fr. Karotemprel Sebastian SDB. He was a legend of our times, a loyal and committed Salesian, an erudite professor, an institution builder, and an active collaborator in the major works of our province. May his soul rest in peace.) Internationally renowned theologian, author and founder of several missionary institutions in Northeast India, Father Sebastian Karotemprel passed away in Shillong, Meghalaya on 20th July. He was 83. The funeral was held in Shillong, on 24th July at 1 p.m. Eight bishops, over 160 priests and a big number of religious and lay people attended the funeral. Fr. George Maliekal sdb, Provincial Superior of the Salesian Province of Silchar to which Fr Karotemprel belonged, said Fr Sebastian has left his own indelible mark on the Church and society.

NEWSLINE, GUWAHATI PROVINCE

Fr. Thomas Vattathara, Salesian Provincial of Guwahati, and the national president of the Catholic Religious of India (CRI) described Fr Karotemprel as a legend of our times, a loyal and committed Salesian, an erudite professor, an institution builder, and an active collaborator in the major missionary works in Northeast India.

16

Fr. Karotemprel was one of the 30 theologians in the International Theological Commission established by Pope John Paul II, headed by the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI). Oxford Encyclopedia of South Asian Christianity (Oxford University Press, 2011) describes him as: `An internationally known theologian, based at Sacred Heart Theological College (SHTC), Shillong. - Fr. George Plattotam

The LEGACY of Fr. Sebastian Karotemprel SDB Fr. Dr. Sebastian Karotemprel has been teaching at SHTC from 1976. He has contributed greatly in turning the institution into a regional and even national centre both for the formation of missionaries as well as for theological study, research and publications. He has been a member of the International Theological Commission of the Catholic Church, of the executive committee of the International Association for Mission Studies and of the Joint Working Group between the World Council of Churches and the Catholic Church; president of the International Association of Catholic Missiologists and senior mission scholar 2001, Overseas Ministries Study Centre, USA. He has published over twenty books and numerous scholarly articles.

The rich legacy that Fr. Sebastian has left behind him will continue to bear witness to his magnanimous personality and to his life of dedication as a missionary and a priest. May the Good Lord reward him with the crown of glory. TRIBUTE to Fr. Sebastian Karotemprel SDB In the sudden demise of Fr. Sebastian Karotemprel, we have lost a legend, a loyal and committed Salesian, an eminent scholar and erudite professor, an

institution builder, and an active collaborator in the major missionary works of our region. In Psalm 80, we read the words: Our span is seventy years, or eighty for those who are strong. God had blessed Fr. Sebastian with 4 score and 3 years, and those of us who knew him personally can vouch for the fact that he lived those years to the full at the service of the Church and of the congregation. A good number of Priests, Sisters and Brothers standing around his mortal remains here today will be able to affirm that Fr. Karotemprel has played a major in their priestly and religious formation. He was a man sent by God at the right time, at the right place to set in motion a chain reaction that has made the Salesian society and the Church in Northeast India grow from strength to strength. The re-opening of the Sacred Heart theological college in 1976 with Fr Sebastian as the Dean was but the beginning of this snow balling effect. He was physically tall and stood tall and, I would add, he marched like a colossus; He did us proud and raised up others to be like him, at least to a certain degree. His erudition did indeed rub off on a number of individuals.

2014 AUGUST

Fr. Sebastian established the well equipped SHTC library. He is the founder of the mission R e v i e w, M i s s i o n To d a y, f o r m e r l y I n d i a n Missiological Review in 1978, and the founder of Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Culture, a treasurehouse and a museum on north-eastern peoples and cultures. He established the Vendrame Institute Publications, and built a monumental library named after the pioneer Salvatorian missionary Fr Otto Hofenmuller. He was closely associated with some of the major projects like the Don Bosco Institute and the Assam Don Bosco University. He has been in uninterrupted publication for the past thirty-five years.

17

It was Fr. Karotemprel who began the process of documenting, writing, printing and publishing all that related to Church growth and development, beginning with the history of the Church in Northeast India. He brought in the scientific tenor in religious circles, and bonded the secular and the religious spheres at the scientific level through regularly conducted seminars, involving both religious and secular scholars. The Indian Missiological Review, which he started and nurtured single handedly for many years, and the Vendrame Institute Publications bear witness to the foresight, determination and charisma of this great son of Don Bosco. Let me quote the words found in St. Paul Cathedral honouring its architect Christopher Wren “Si monumentum requiris, cicumpsice”. If you are looking for a monument, it's all around you.. the Otto Hopfenmuller Library, the Don Bosco Museum, the Sacred Heart College buildings and many more are the monuments which speak of Fr. Karotemprel. Let me add at this juncture that he supported me substantially in setting up the Don Bosco Institute. He was also solidly behind the establishment of the Assam Don Bosco University, of which he was a joint Project coordinator and governing body member.

NEWSLINE, GUWAHATI PROVINCE

(Though he was accustomed to addressing national and international audiences, Fr. Karotemprel could come down to the level of ordinary youth. I remember him giving talks to youth engaged in vocational training at DBI, Guwahati, talking to them about things that mattered to them, things that they could easily understand, absorb and profit from. In fact, during one of his visits to DBI one fine day, he addressed four different groups of people, IAS officers, teachers undergoing in-service training, MBA students and the vocational trainees. It was an

18

on the spot invitation to him, and with a little insistence, he accepted the challenge. Fr. Francis Fernandez who introduced him to all the four groups, and was present during these conferences, asserts that he endeared himself to the groups and dealt with relevant themes and approaches; such was his genius. ) He was a theologian by profession. He taught theology, wrote books on theology and waxed eloquent on theological and ecclesial matters. And, I would add, he made theology his personal guide and servant. He wrote poems with deep theological content that could provide inspiration to the reader. The book of poems “Stay with us Lord” that he had penned reveal a person deeply spiritual and in communion with God and His creation. May I finally quote from his own prayer which was fulfilled in his life : “ Before shadows lengthen in twilight, And Darkness engulfs my little light Let me sup with you at your table And Light my flame of resurrection. Mane nobiscum, Domine – Stay with me, my days are far spent” Dear Fr. Sebastian, now that you have left this earthly life, neither life, nor death separates you from Christ Jesus whom you followed and served with love and commitment all your life. May you rest in peace with your Lord and Saviour, and remember us till we meet again at Jesus' feet. - Fr. VM Thomas SDB Provincial

Mary Thadavanal: May his soul rest in peace and the legendry monuments he has left behind remain forever to speak of his commitment to God and his people! How I wish we had more like him !!! Antony Kannanayakkal Joseph: Life on earth is the beginning of life in heaven. Today I celebrate my B'day here, while Fr. Sebastian Karotemprel is celebrating in heaven. That's the love of God: he makes us come from nowhere when there is love and makes us reach that somewhere where we can experience the Fullness of His Love.

Matthew Coutinho: I was privileged to know Fr Sebastian in what could be considered the 'evening' of his life. Age and debility did nothing to quell the zeal and determination that were his hallmarks...May he inspire us to greater vision and dedicated commitment in our mission of building the Kingdom of God...RIP Fr. Sebastian.

GC27 ANIMATIONS AT THE PROVINCE LEVEL The Salesians of Guwahati Province gathered in Tura (Garo Hills), Kokrajhar (BTAD), Sojong (Karbi Anglong & Dima Hasao) Don Bosco Maligaon (Guwahati Region) and Tangla (Assam Plains) for an animation on the recent concluded 27 General Chapter of the Congregation. Fr. VM Thomas SDB, the Provincial animated the session for the confreres. In opening sessions Fr. Provincial presented the statistics of the Salesians in the world. From the light of the discussion various points were brought forth which included the great responsibilities that the Salesians in India have to play for the future of the congregation. Therefore, 'communities should prepare responsible leaders.' Some are of the opinion that the quality of a leader in community is to prepare the successor or disciple for the future. The statement is in line with the thought of Fr. Provincial who requested the leaders of community to help young confreres to prepare themselves to take up future challenges. In the second hour of the discussion Fr. Provincial said that the expectation of the GC27 is visibility, credibility and fruitfulness. The discussion was in tune with the message of Pope Francis who recommended to the Salesian six mantras: 1. Need to prepare the young to work in society according to the spirit of the Gospel. 2. Strengthen the motto 'Da mihi animas, cetera tolle' with two other elements: work and temperance.

Nothing arrives more slowly and passes more quickly than a vacation. The twenty days of summer break that the brothers of Salesian College, Dimapur had has passed just in a flash. The twenty days, though free from basic academic activities, the brothers were kept busy with a variety of activities. One of the activities was coaching. As Don Bosco used to say, “Vacation is a change of occupation.”

During this short span of break Salesian College Dimapur conducted football and basketball coaching. The coaching lasted ten days from 10th-20thJune. The young clerics took part in it with full gusto, trying to learn as much as possible in a short span of time. BOSCO SKILL MISSION (BSM) It was with great hesitation and anxiety the crash course, Employment Generation Mission, (EGM) under the Assam Government scheme, for the under privileged job seeking youth of Assam was started off on the 10th of July 2013. Since the time of its beginning, the BSM staff and the beneficiaries have nothing but to appreciate the Assam Government and the Don Bosco Institute, Kharguli, for the opportunity provided, to live not poor but average common people in the society. Many of our centre beneficiaries have only to say, “BIG THANKS” to Don Bosco Society. Batch after batch of trainees took great interest in the training program, and today many who were considered useless have become money holders for their livelihood. Every batch students were drilled with this thought, born poor is not your fault, but to live poor is your fault. With this thought everyone today does work, not to be poor but to live happily with their earnings. - Fr. Marcus Lakra Centre Director, Barpeta
