Fatigue, Weight Gain & Sleep Loss‌ The Adrenal Connection Sarah E. Bentley, DC

What would it be to have the energy to manage your stress throughout the day? What would you accomplish? How would it transform your life? You probably have heard of the adrenal glands and cortisol, but you may not be aware that they play a tremendous role in your energy levels and overall well being. The adrenal glands produce steroid hormones, which determine overall vitality, strength, energy, stamina, and overall well-being. Steroid hormones help us maintain healthy mood and emotion, healthy pregnancy, healthy menopause, potency and fertility and provide protection against disease. The adrenal glands are the size of a walnut and sit on top of each kidney. When your outside environment is coming at you with physical, mental and emotional stressors, the adrenal glands create cortisol to help boost your energy and keep your body in balance, homeostasis. Cortisol activates the fight or flight response during perceived dangerous situations. Unfortunately, for most of us, we never have reprieve from stress and the daily grind. This leads to fatigue and emotional exhaustion because the adrenal glands just can’t keep up. Cortisol participates in gluconeogenesis (creation of blood sugar which may induce insulin resistance over time), anti-inflammatory responses (Can you see how if your adrenals are tired that you would experience more allergies because there is less cortisol to deal with the inflammation?), and suppression of the immune system (decreased ability to fight foreign invaders). continued... page 9

continued... Fatigue, Weight Gain & Sleep Loss… When your body is under continual stress, the adrenal glands will divert from secreting DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone - the building block of sex hormones) to make cortisol. What would that look like down the road of life? Perhaps early menopause, infertility? You are probably already beginning to create a picture of how important your adrenals are to your health and well-being. People with adrenal issues have some easily recognizable physical manifestations. They may have a buffalolike hump of fat on the shoulders and/or stomach fat that is loose and hanging over the waist. They may be unable to rest, get tired around 10a, 2p and 4p, worry excessively, crave salt, and retain water, especially around the ankles. Other symptoms may include: • Difficulty getting up in the morning • Continued fatigue, not relieved by rest and sleep • Lethargic and no energy to do normal daily activities • Sugar cravings • Allergies • Digestive problems • Decreased interest in sex • Decreased ability to handle stress • Increased time to recover from illness, injury or trauma • Feeling light-headed or dizzy when standing up quickly • Low moods/ Depression • Less enjoyment and happiness with life • Increased PMS • Thoughts less focused. Brain fog • Memory poor • Sleep Disorders • You don’t feel like you wake up til after 10am. • You have an afternoon low between 3-4pm Saliva testing can tell if you are in Phase I (the alarm stage), Phase II (the resistance stage) or Phase III (the exhaustion stage) of adrenal failure. Each stage has its own unique qualifications. Phase I is characterized by increased cortisol and DHEA (i.e. the building blocks of sex hormones), the autonomic nervous system is in sympathetic dominance (fight or flight) and it is typically asymptomatic. In Phase II the body has been under repeated stress, cortisol is increased and DHEA is decreased, symptoms may include being stressed out, anxiety attacks and mood swings. The autonomic nervous system is still in flight or flight. In Phase III cortisol and DHEA are decreased. Symptoms might look like depression, exhaustion and insomnia. Low cortisol levels are seen with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, depression, impotence in men, anorexia nervosa, panic disorders, PMS, infertility, menopause and sleep disorders. What can you do about it? continued... page 21

continued... Fatigue, Weight Gain & Sleep Loss… There are alternative methods of supporting your adrenals. You may wish to consult with a nutritionist or alternative healthcare professional about what it takes to support your body with whole foods, nutrition and good common sense. Here is a list of things you can do and not do to help support recovering from adrenal fatigue. Pace yourself; avoid pushing yourself to exhaustion. Eat real wholefood; avoid sugar, caffeine and junk food. Be kind to yourself; avoid being self critical. Eat every two hours; avoid skipping meals. Eat a combination of carbs, fat and protein; avoid eating carbs by themselves. Go to bed by 10:00 pm; avoid staying up late and catching your second wind. Sleep until 8:00 am when possible; avoid arising early if you don’t have to. Eat balanced nutritious food; avoid food to which you are allergic or have a reaction. Drink water and herbal teas; avoid sodas, coffee, alcohol and juice. Become empowered with your healthcare; avoid making someone else responsible for it. Be with people who are concerned with your well-being and helpful in your recovery; avoid people who steal your energy. Find things that make you laugh; avoid being excessively serious. Do things you enjoy; avoid “the daily grind”. Enjoy mild to moderate exercise; avoid aggressive exercise. It is important to give yourself the gift of health and well being. Increased energy, vitality and happiness are things you have to look forward to and can experience in your everyday life. If you just stop and take the time for you! Oh, and by the way!
