an eclectic selection of short films, animations and motion graphics presenting evocative visions of future cities and our urban destinies. juxtaposing utopian fantasies with nightmarish dystopias, future cities highlights the possible metropolis of tomorrow with sci-fi architectural visions, near future worlds and even touches the warped frontier of space. joshua frankel: plan of the city / usa 2011 / 13:18 a musical opus and animated collage of live action footage, animation, illustrations and treated photographs imagining what would happen if the people and architecture of new york city blasted off into outer space and resettled on mars. includes photos taken by the mars rovers spirit and opportunity made available to the public domain by the nasa jet propulsion laboratory. created in collaboration with composer judd greenstein and now ensemble. benjamin ducroz [eness]: mťbius / australia 2011 / 1:21 a time-lapse animation that transforms melbourne’s federation square with a sculptural optical illusion of 21 triangles that behave in cyclical patterns, appearing to sink into and re-emerge from the ground. a suggestion of how public art may look and behave in the future. ben craig: modern times / uk 2010 / 3:49 how will people spend their recreational time in years to come? this visually arresting short from scottish director ben craig imagines a futuristic space age community who enjoy watching early hollywood cinema classics on an unusual cinema screen. gives a whole new meaning to widescreen imax.

onedotzero_ onedotzero_ adventures adventuresininmotion motion matthieu clopez + elie ly kok: migration / canada + france 2010 / 3:41 having been deserted by its human population, a metropolis takes on a life of its own. this cg animated short creates the haunting atmosphere and substance of a world that is changing in an unexpected way. the result of a collaboration between artfx [the cgi and vfx school based in montpellier] and the vancouver film school. simon russell: nothing to fear / uk 2010 / 2:36 a dystopian love story set in a surveillance state, intricately illustrated and animated by simon russell and set to an emotive neoclassical score by ben ash and îlafur arnalds. sick of creating shiny r&b adverts, simon wanted to make this personal project a little more meaningful. ben hibon: sucker punch – distant planet / uk 2011 / 2:50 one of a series of animated shorts inspired by the movie sucker punch. animator and onedotzero alumni ben hibon teamed up with the feature’s director zack snyder and comflix studios to further explore the fantasy worlds of the film with graphic and visually arresting animated excerpts. in distant planet, characters from the film find themselves battling a robot militia on a hijacked train. sometimes those with less have more to fight for... nils mühlenbruch: fix me up / holland 2010 / 5:25 alien boy scouts named drifters are on the brink of creating a new super human being. hovering above the earth in endless orbit, a drifter base camp is established. mühlenbruch’s envisages what the next stage in evolution might be using his trademark vivid and colourful style of stop-motion flash animation. miles christensen [spov]: resistance 3 - follow capelli / uk 2011 / 1:35 animated trailer for the new playstation 3 sci- fi first person shooter. spov, the creatively led design and animation studio took visual inspiration from saul bass’ classic title sequences and olly moss’ contemporary graphic design to create a compelling narrative. it introduces game protagonist capelli and his epic journey to new york in a world where the states is the only nation surviving against the chimeran occupation. naoki takano: disassembly for cluster scenery / japan 2011 / 2:50 a personal experimental project that simply set out to achieve the maximum possibility of cg animation whilst expressing the beauty of destruction, dispersion and breaking apart. beginning in 2009 and completed in 2011, takano had no intention of expressing any kind of message, but perhaps unintentionally the film takes on a new meaning in light of japan’s recent disaster. oliviu lugojan-ghenciu: gravityone: a choreography for militarised airspace / australia 2011 / 6:35 extending out of the cities and into the remote territories of the australian never never, whose vast red landscapes have been scarred by a dramatic history of nuclear testing, rocket launches and black military technologies. forgotten, somewhere in this landscape, is an abandoned missile tracking station. from here something else is being launched, a choreographed flock of autonomous gliders, to drift through the air in silent protest. eric schockmel: occupation: movements ii & iii / uk 2010 / 6:30 also known as syscape#4, this 3d animated short is a continuation of the syscapes research project in a systemic laboratory space. a familiar story of a beautiful environment fated by human impact, visually reminiscent of video game design and science-fiction’s near future. jesse j. seppi [tronic studio]: the cool hunter / usa 2011 / 1:35 this story follows a group of cool hunters, evolved humans who used to live among regular humans, but as time passed, they infiltrated the global wired infrastructure system and live connected within the technology. an opener for the cool hunter lifestyle blog.

onedotzero_ onedotzero_ adventures adventuresininmotion motion oliver zeller: immersive cocoon / usa 2011 / 2:30 keir dullea encounters a mysterious object, in a scenario more than reminiscent of the penultimate scene from stanley kubrick’s 2001: a space odyssey that he appeared in over forty years ago. this teaser short film, a faux commercial, reveals the speculative immersive cocoon. a future concept study by tino schaedler with design collective nau that presents a new way of interacting with computers. wendy mcmurdo: olympia / uk 2011 / 4:38 shot on location at one of the uk’s major robotic labs, olympia takes contemporary developments in humanoid robotics as its theme. in a promenade around a deserted lab, objects become real, robotic torsos and arms begin to mirror life and mimic human motion more closely than ever before and a humanoid head begins to sing. the desire for a future where inanimate objects are imbued with life seems closer than ever. alexandre lehmann: astroblast / musicians with guns / france 2010 / 4:26 in a zero gravity abstract space, where nothing ever decays, architectural ensembles are slowly mutating into yet newer architectural ensembles. zooming deep into small arches always brings you into new stunning places full of weird angles. an exploration of a 3d fractal structure (hybrid formula) that hints at a never-ending future city. paul nicholls: golden age – somewhere / uk 2011 / 6:00 visualising the notion of a ‘downloaded architecture’ in a future where online usage radically changes. the boundaries between the real and the virtual seamlessly merge until home decor can be adapted like computer desktop wallpaper to suit different moods. a bartlett school of architecture, unit 15 graduation film, nicholls recently founded factory fifteen with fellow students. jonathan gales: megalomania / uk 2011 / 4:32 megalomania perceives the city in total construction. the built environment is explored as a labyrinth of architecture that is unfinished, incomplete or broken. a personal response to the state of infrastructure and capital, gales is also a bartlett school of architecture unit 15 graduate and factory fifteen founder. till nowak: the experience of fliehkraft / germany 2011 / 2:30 the hand-held home-movie feel gives this a totally realistic look. an imagined series of fictional thrill rides for future fun fairs based on a childhood fascination for the strange atmosphere of amusement parks this fantastical piece of video art demonstrates the strange and scary ways we search for happiness. run time approx. 80 minutes.
