E DITO R I AL JUSSI HELLSTEN / VISIT HELSINKI

Spring is here – go outdoors! Helsinki begins to bloom in the spring, welcoming everyone to leave the house and hit the city’s streets, nature and waters. Helsinki is an excellent choice for active people. Nature is always close and the city is surrounded by water. Helsinki has refreshingly green parks, the Central Park forest can be reached by tram, and the island of Vallisaari charms visitors with its wild nature. City bikes are a nice way to explore this compact city, and it is easy to combine outings on water with walks around the city. How about a cruise on Beautiful Canal Route, a day-trip to Suomenlinna island, a kayaking trip, or a fresh dive into the outdoor pool at Helsinki Swimming Stadium, which opens in May? This is the Outdoors issue of Helsinki This Week. Our main article focuses on Nuuksio National Park and the Finnish Nature Centre Haltia, which are located just 35 minutes from the city. What a great place! There is also an article on kayaking in eastern Helsinki. The My Helsinki section introduces Jussi Hellsten, a skilled photographer famous for his pictures of Helsinki. Hellsten’s photographs of the city, its nature and people have appeared in many advertisements and publications that showcase Helsinki. The event calendar is bursting with top-notch events! Restaurants on the islands open in early May, and Marimekko holds its legendary spring fashion show outdoors, like every year. The Ihana Helsinki festival makes the city with flower, the World Village festival turns Kaisaniemi park into a global playground, and Arabia Street Festival celebrates its 10th birthday. If it rains, head to one of the city’s cool museums that offer a lot to see and experience this spring. Our regular sections include the lists of restaurants, including restaurants that are open on Sundays, a Good to Know info kit on Helsinki, a list of museums and various activity tips in the To Do & See section. Grab a copy of Helsinki This Week and make the most of your trip with our tips. Enjoy the spring! Best wishes, The Helsinki This Week team

HEIKKI WILLAMO / THE MYTHICAL JOURNEY

Exhibition: Heikki Willamo – the mythical journey 17.5.-13.8.

Heikki Willamo has photographed Nordic landscapes and nature – its flora and fauna alike – for over three decades. In his photographs he takes the viewer back to an imaginary and mythical time, a time before the construction of civilizations and their boundaries. Willamo places his photographs as a part of a millennia-old continuum of pictures of animals, they become inner images and visions, echoing myths and dreams where the animals take on different, almost shamanistic, meanings.

WHO?

JUSSI HELLSTEN

10

Jussi Hellsten is an advertising and commercial-documentary director, photographer, cinematographer and film editor. He’s especially known for his Helsinki pictures. He’s originally from Elimäki, which is a municipality of Kouvola. Jussi lives currently in Helsinki with his family and has an 8-month-old daughter. www.helsinkithisweek.com

MY HELSINKI

MY HELSINKI is the original feature of Helsinki This Week. It showcases interesting and well-known Helsinkians and their thoughts about the city.

Jussi Hellsten:

I never get bored of the view from the ferry to Suomenlinna Jussi, you could be regarded as one of Helsinki’s established photographers. Your pictures are seen in many adverts and articles that deal with Helsinki, such as our magazine. How did this come about? I moved to Helsinki back in 2007, that was also the first year I contacted the people at Flow Festival and asked if I could come take some photos for them. Flow’s managing director Suvi Kallio encouraged us to consider our festival photos as a form of art, not just photos. Something clicked inside my head and I just let go of all the thoughts I had before about how photos should look and just did it the way I wanted myself. That is by far the most important moment of my career. After that, different companies started contacting me and asking for photos in the same style. And I’m still on that path. What do you prefer to photograph in Helsinki? When photographing Helsinki365, my favourite opportunities were those where I could illustrate Helsinki and its people in the same situation. I think it’s the people who make the city. What is Helsinki365? Helsinki365 is a project where I released one photo for every day of the year. I did it for the first time in 2012 just to challenge myself. In 2013, I started to look for a partner who would be interested in being involved with this mad project. Luckily, the good people at Visit Helsinki were interested and we co-launched Helsinki365 in late 2013. This time it was not just a challenge for myself, but I wanted to document what Helsinki looked like in 2014 from my point of view.

www.helsinkithisweek.com

How did you become a photographer? Why photographs? That’s actually an interesting question. I had a very clear vision when I was younger that I wanted to work with video. Directing or editing, not necessarily shooting. I ended up at studying photography basics. I thought it was useful to learn the fundamentals of image making, but it ended up capturing my heart completely. Essentially, it brings me the ultimate joy when I manage to capture a beautiful photo I’m satisfied with. Do you take selfies? I actually started doing a selfie series of myself with my 8-month-old daughter. Also, very often when building a studio set for a portrait session, I need to test how it looks and use myself as a test dummy, so I get a new Facebook profile photo every now and then. The theme of our latest magazine is Outdoors. What are your favourite outdoor spots in Helsinki? Uutela and Kallahdenniemi in Vuosaari are very picturesque places, both with a very unique look. I’ve photographed and filmed there a lot. There’s also a very nice beach at the end of Kallahdenniemi, perfect for hot summer days. Vallisaari, which has just opened its doors to visitors, is definitely worth visiting, too! If visitors to Helsinki want to take some good pictures that capture the spirit of the city, where do you recommend they should go? I’d recommend the Olympic Stadium Tower, but the stadium is under renovation until 2019. I think one of the key elements that makes Helsinki the city it is, is the surrounding water. One view I never get bored of is from the ferry to Suomenlinna. See Jussi’s photo on the cover and editorial of this issue. Helsinki365, www.helsinki365.com. Jussi’s personal portfolio, www.jussihellsten.com

SPECIAL R EPORT Text: Violetta Teetor Photo: Finnish Nature Centre / Mika Huisman

Nature on your Doorstep

So you’re in Helsinki for just a few days, time’s at a premium and you simply have to do one thing Finland is famous for, get into nature. It couldn’t be easier. A simple train ride from the Central Railway Station to Espoon Keskus and then bus 245 right there as you step off, take you to Haltia Nature Centre and Nuuksio National Park. Haltia Nature Centre You can’t miss it since this huge wooden structure stands out as a testament to clean, green construction made of cross-laminated timber elements inside. A fire waiting to happen? Actually not since the external wood is silica-impregnated pine, completely harmless to the environment and flame-resistant. Climb up the tower and you’ll see a grass-decked roof and solar panels. Geothermal heating is used when sunlight is minimal. On the inside, a dream world of subdued lighting, videos, photographs and structures transports you to natural spots all around Finland. Listen to the nocturnal sounds of animals in the forest, creep into the Bear’s den and give it a pat, feast your eyes on the panorama of the changing seasons and stimulate your brain inside the giant egg where Osmo Rauhala’s installation of two swans playing a randomly changing chess game with tokens signifying the nucleobases of our DNA, keep you wondering. Look up, look down, look around you, you’re surrounded by details that you might miss if it weren’t for the keen eye of nature photographers that have studied their surroundings and the animals that come and go in them for years. Changing art exhibitions are entertaining for even the youngest amongst us. The restaurant upstairs has a sweeping view across Lake Pitkäjärvi and serves coffee and lunch at reasonable prices. Haltia Nature Centre is open from Mondays to Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm.

www.helsinkithisweek.com

Nuuksio National Park Before you hit the buffet in the nature centre, the real thing calls in Nuuksio National Park and a good hike in the surrounding forest is bound to awaken your appetite. Trails of different lengths have been designed to suit the whole family and whether you’re a serious walker or just in need of a casual stroll, you’re not going to get lost. It’s all very well marked and stumbling on a barbecue area is not uncommon. Wood is provided but don’t forget to bring your own sausages and dry matches. The month of May ushers in warmer weather opening the ice-covered lakes that are dotted all around this protected area. You can’t help but ‘hear’ the quiet inside this haven of birch and its moss-clad primary rock. This is a unique experience leaving you with a sense of complete relaxation and calm. If you’re unsure of your directional skills, knowledgeable guides can reveal the secrets that lie beneath the surface or point out birds that you never knew existed. While Lapland is several hundreds of kilometres away, reindeer thrive at Nuuksio Reindeer Park. You can stroke them, feed them and grill your sticky bun over an open fire in the traditional ‘kota’ or Finnish-style tepee. Cycling is another option for the more energetic that prefer to move faster than a walking pace. And if you simply can’t tear yourself away from this idyllic environment, sauna and accommodation can easily be arranged. The hours race by and before you know it, it’s time to return to the hurly burly of city life but the peace and mindfulness that you find in this place stays with you for a long time to come. It’s Finland at its best.

NATURA VIVA
