E DITO R I AL KIMMO SYVÄRI / VISIT FINLAND

Guess Who’s Coming to Town? It’s the beginning of the season again: pointy red hats, the scent of mulled wine in the air and everyone busy buying gifts for their loved ones. Christmas is approaching, and we are opening the season on 25 November, as Santa Claus himself comes to Helsinki to switch on the traditional Christmas lights along Aleksanterinkatu. The legendary Christmas window of the Stockmann department store will be revealed, and several Christmas markets offer gift ideas and Christmas spirit for those passing by. The year’s highlight takes place on 31 December, as it’s time for the New Year’s party organised by the City of Helsinki on the Kansalaistori square. The show will include some amazing artists and a fantastic fireworks display. Before the change of the year, the city offers something to do for every day of the week. There are concerts, exhibitions, Winter Circus shows, the Christmas Path on Seurasaari island and the worldrenowned Slush event, just to name a few. For more information on the events in November and December, see pages 5–9 as well as the event calendar on our website at www.helsinkithisweek. com/events Page 12 includes our best tips for Christmas shopping, and the My Helsinki column on page 10 contains an interview with Steve Moses, the American addition to the local KHL ice hockey team Jokerit, who tells us more about how an American athlete views Helsinki. At the top of the list of contents, you can find a direct link to our online article introducing Helsinki’s new pride: Art museum Amos Rex. Enjoy the rest of the year!

LOCAL GUIDE

When in Helsinki, remember to taste the local season delicacies.

JUSSI HELLSTEN / HELSINKI MARKETING

Season’s Flavours G

lögi (Glühwein or mulled wine) is a Christmas tradition in the whole Finland. You can find a number of different types of glögi; alcohol free, mild and strong variants. Glögi is served usually with raisins and blanched almonds. So, drop your Christmas shopping for a while, step in to the nearest cozy café and ask for some glögi. King of the Christmas Dinner is oven-baked ham. Slowly baking the ham in the oven is one of the Christmas rituals and it’s usually done the night before Christmas eve. Ham is usually accompanied with vegetable casseroles such as rutaga casserole, potato casserole and carrot casserole. Pastry of the season is Joulutorttu (Christmas pastry). This delicious pastry is filled with plum jam and dusted with powered sugar. As well as glögi, you can find these star-shaped delights in any café of the town. If you’re a fan of porridge, try Christmas Porridge which is a traditional Christmas delicacy. Usually the porridge is served with sugar and cinnamon on top. When eaten in Christmas, an almond is hidden in the pot of porridge. The one who finds it, gets to make a wish.

Restaurant Eevert – Pure flavours from the Northern forests, fields and lakes

Restaurant Eevert provides a holistic experience consisting of food, drink and Finnish design.

T

he first thing that welcomes customers at Eevert is its peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. After that, you start seeing the number of beautiful objects and furniture that are all Finnish design. You are surrounded by the works of such great Finnish designers as Alvar Aalto, Harri Koskinen, Yrjö Kukkapuro, Lars Sonck and Oiva Toikka. The restaurant also has rare pieces, such as Yrjö Kukkapuro’s Remmi furniture in the original brass colour. The architect Alvar Aalto has a specific role in the restaurant as the building that houses Eevert is, in fact, a building designed by Alvar Aalto in 1952 where Aalto had an office. Aalto’s touch can be seen in the restaurant’s interior: there are round skylights characteristic of Aalto, wooden walls, a white lattice-type roof and wooden doors. New autumn menu The inspiration for the Eevert’s food are the changing Finnish seasons, its flavours and colours. At the moment they are serving the delicious autumn menu which includes flavours from Lapland and Northern forests, fields and lakes. “Our food is honest, clean and as natural as possible. Our ingredients come from different Finnish small-scale producers. Even though the basic flavours of our food derive from traditional Finnish cuisine, our food is modern,” says restaurateur Tarja Martiskainen. “Modernity and visuality – they are our things,” she adds. The restaurant offers menus from four to six dishes as well as a tasting menu. The royal ingredients of Finnish cuisine shine in the menus, for instance, berries, mushrooms, game, reindeer, different fish and smoked products. Of the popular menus, especially the Menu 4 presents Finnish basic flavours, and it is a favourite of tourists. In addition, they have a traditional á la carte menu. “As a novelty this autumn we are offer-

ing the chef’s 8 courses surprise menu which consists of the seasons best ingredients. It actually offers a journey through Eevert’s world of taste and representing our culinary philosophy”, add Martiskainen. The menus are complemented by wines selected by the restaurant’s sommelier. In addition, Eevert offers Kyrö Distillery’s drink where Finnish basic flavours are presented in a modern manner. In addition to Kyrö, the restaurant’s partners include Iittala, Arabia, Secto Design, Kaffa Roastery and Lumoan. Family-run business in the background Restaurant Eevert is run by the restaurateur couple Tarja and Kimmo Martiskainen who want to cherish the www.helsinkithisweek.com

values of a family-run business in the restaurant and its operations. The couple wants to keep everything close and flexible. In addition, the restaurant’s name was found close. It was preceded by a long and careful process. “My husband’s grandfather couldn’t remember the names of all his grandchildren so he took to calling all of them Eevert. It felt like the right name for our restaurant where we respect history,” tells Martiskainen. Restaurant Eevert, Ratakatu 9, +358 20 741 3011, Tue–Sat 17–23, www.eevert.fi

Рождественская ярмарка в Хельсинки на Сенатской площади, с 1 по 22 декабря. www.tuomaanmarkkinat.fi WORLD OF TRE За лучшими финскими дизайнерскими изделиями и одеждой нужно отправляться в World of Tre.

Kluuvikatu 3, www.fazer.fi/fazer-cafe/

Frantsila Garden Trilogy. Pohjoisesplanadi 19
