Experience the silence and sea nature at the Söderskär lighthouse

O

ne of the most beautiful places in all Finland is the Söderskär lighthouse in the outer archipelago of Porvoo, just 1,5 hours boat ride from Helsinki. At these few barren islets in the Baltic sea, you can experience solidarity and silence, as well as the beauty of wild nature and amazing open sea views. These islets are part of a nature reserve and you can visit the place only as part of an official Söderskär cruise. The 32 meters high lighthouse was built in 1862 and inside it you’ll find an exhibition with stories and photos of the lighthouse keepers and long lost sailors. Author Tove Jansson was inspired by the Söderskär lighthouse when

writing her Moomin story Moominpappa at Sea. The lighthouse is also part of Finnish war history of 1918 and 1940s. The last of the lighthouse keepers left the Majakkasaari island in 1957 Explore the archipelago, the nature of the Baltic sea and the adventures of times gone by. Daily cruises to Söderskär lighthouse depart from the Market Square at 9:00 and the boat stops also in Vuosaari, Eastern Helsinki, at 10:30. Return to the Market Square at 16:00. There’s a café at the boat. Tickets 65 € / adults, 33 € / children 6–12 yrs, 0–5 yrs for free. More info at www.soderskar.fi/soderskars-lighthouse

H

elsinki’s Zoo is situated on the Korkeasaari island and that’s why the zoo is called simply Korkeasaari. The zoo houses over a 1000 plant species and animals of 150 different species, including various mammals, birds and reptiles. Take a step into a tropical rainforest and meet monkeys and parrots in the Amazonia house. See some snakes, frogs, gundis and mongoose in the Africasia house, and get to know the natural wonders of cold mountain regions. THE NEWEST CAT IN TOWN Korkeasaari turns 130 years this year and to celebrate all these wonderful years they present 13 new species, each for every decade! One of the newcomers in the zoo is Amur leopard cat. This tiny, leopard-like spotted cat is a feisty species, originally from the Amur region in the Russian Far East. This individual came from a zoo in Czech Republic and the cat has already found its favourite place: A hammock made of old fire hoses! www.helsinkithisweek.com

SEE SOME KANGAROOS FROM EYE TO EYE Walk through the kangaroo enclosure and experience a close encounter with the red-necked wallabies. There are a few baby wallabies born every year, so you’ll have a good chance of spotting one peeking from a pouch. The kangaroo path is open 12-14 daily during summertime (subject to weather conditions). AMAZING FINNISH ANIMALS Get to know some of Finland’s best known and loved animals, e.g. wolverines, lynx, bears and moose! Head to the Korpi (Wilderness) area in the zoo and learn more about the creatures that wander the Finnish forests also in real life. CONSERVING NATURE’S BIODIVERSITY Korkeasaari is open every day of the year. By visiting Korkeasaari you’ll also contribute to protecting the nature. Korkeasaari supports conservation of nature’s biodiversity by caring for and breeding endangered species, and by educating the public. They also particwww.helsinkithisweek.com

ipate in returning rare species to the wild. For example all the European forest reindeer calves born in recent years participate the re-introduction project in Finland. ENJOY THE WHOLE DAY The whole zoo area is so full of things to do, so you better reserve enough time to explore everything. And remember to take a break and enjoy a meal in restaurant Karhu (bear) or restaurant Pukki (goat), or an ice cream at Café Hedvig just next to the lion enclosure. HOW TO REACH THE ISLAND OF ANIMALS Enjoy a ferry ride and the seaside views, ferries to the zoo depart from the Market Square and next to Hakaniemi Square. You can also take the bus number 16 from the Central Railway Station (platform 17) or travel by metro to Kalasatama and then take a nice 1,5 km walk to the island.

Text: Helsinki This Week Photo: Julia Kivelä / Visit Finland

www.helsinkithisweek.com
