Bon Appètit! You are holding in your hands the food issue of Helsinki This Week. Helsinki’s restaurant scene is alive and kicking. New interesting places keep popping up and the people of Helsinki are eager to try new flavours and spend time in exciting new restaurants. In addition, they eat out more than ever before. Our feature article Eat here (page 14) presents some new-ish restaurants with interesting concepts, high-quality food products or celebrated and famous restaurateurs. In the My Helsinki series (page 12), we present food influencer Hanna Gullichsen, who shares her interesting and charming thoughts on food, cooking and eating. It’s definitely worth a read! Our event pages (5–11) include top tips on what you should do in Helsinki in March and April. Check out topical exhibitions (page 5) and an article on a Finnish favourite food, salmon soup (page 10). Concern about climate change and topics related to sustainable development are closely linked with food and also close to our hearts on the Helsinki This Week team. On pages 20–21, we present the hot exhibition of The Finnish Nature Centre Haltia called Trace. The exhibition explores the relationship between humans and nature and the effect humans have on nature. On page 11, we highlight some restaurants and cafés where you can grab a bite with a good conscience by enjoying responsible food.

Events This Week Finnish salmon soup (lohikeitto) is a deliciously creamy and hearty meal that you can find in almost every restaurant in town. Finns absolutely love this heart-warming dish and in many places it’s one of the most popular items on the menu. At minimum, the main ingredients include salmon, potatoes and leek, but there are variations of the recipe. The soup is served hot with a slice of rye bread. Salmon soup is a perfect dish both for lunch and dinner. You can go and taste it for example in Restaurant Savotta, in the heart of the city. You’ll have an opportunity to choose between a bigger or a smaller plate, depending on your hunger. We recommend going for the bigger one, you’ll definitely love the taste!

RESTAURANT ANDREA The spectacular St. George Hotel by the Old Church Park houses a restaurant that only few Helsinki residents have visited. It is called Andrea. Unlike the fabulous and fancy St. George, Andrea is a casual and pleasant restaurant where the food is supposed to be ridiculously good. Andrea serves Turkish cuisine with a Nordic twist. And it’s not just overall Turkish, but Anatolian cuisine from the southern peninsula of Turkey. The man behind the restaurant is Turkish Mehmet Gürs who has in all 14 restaurants all over the world. Andrea’s menu features dishes to be shared at the table, finger food, slow-cooked meat, fresh vegetables and spicy flat breads. Lönnrotinkatu 4, www.andreahelsinki.com

SOFIA BISTRO, SOFIA GASTRO & SOFIA WINE + TEA SALON An urban centre of good life, Sofia Future Farm offers working and meeting facilities, cultural events, exercise opportunities and excellent food. The restaurant is located in the Empire style milieu of the Kiseleff building’s first floor. The menu consists of locally sourced food, ecological fish and sometimes game. In the evenings from 18 until midnight, the second floor of the Kiseleff house is the stage of Sofia Gastro, an intimate

top-notch dining restaurant. A stunning view of Helsinki Cathedral and a menu that remains a secret until you enjoy it will charm any diner. Sofia Wine at the street level also serves wine lovers. And don’t forget the amazing Tea Salon where you can enjoy breakfast or afternoon tea in a stunning Empire style hall. Unioninkatu 27, Sofiankatu 4, www.sofiafuturefarm.fi

VENTUNO Last year, the successful chef and restaurateur duo Tomi Björck and Matti Wikberg opened Ventuno, a restaurant specialising in Italian cuisine. Located in a spectacular premium property, the heart of Ventuno is a humongous wood-fired oven where the pizzettas, or “house bread” as they’re called, are cooked. Even though Ventuno’s offering is based on classic Italian cooking, it still has a unique and modern touch. The menu features antipasti, pasta, risotto, Italian main courses and, of course, cheese, charcuterie and sweet desserts. In connection with Ventuno Osteria is Ventuno Caffè that offers Italian sandwiches and other delicacies to go with high-quality coffee. Enjoying a quick espresso with a biscotto along the bar of the Caffè is as Italian as you can get in Helsinki. Korkeavuorenkatu 21, www.ventuno.fi

BROKADI If nothing else can get you in a tram heading to the neighbourhood of Vallila, Brokadi will. Brokadi is a Chinese restaurant offering genuine Sichuan cuisine that has been nothing but praised. The Sichuan aspect can be seen as strong use of Sichuan pepper, for instance. Brokadi specialty is trying out different organ meats, frog legs and a dish in which thinly sliced yak beef is served with scallops and wood ear mushroom. Mäkelänkatu 45, www.brokadi.com

PONTUS The respected Finnish chef Antto Melasniemi seems to succeed in creating restaurants that the people of Helsinki love, one after the other. Opened last year, Pontus has attracted both old regulars and new guests. Pontus is run by Melasniemi and Heikki Purhonen and located in the neighbourhood of Ullanlinna, adjacent to KOM theatre. In addition to being a theatre restaurant, it is also an uncomplicated and charming bistro. The menu includes pizzas, salads, lasagne and many rich flavours. The menu also includes small delicacies on display by the bar, such as a whole globe artichoke with lemon and butter oil or octopus salad. Kapteeninkatu 26, www.ravintolapontus.fi

Trace

An exhibition on human traces in nature

Haltia – The Finnish Nature Centre wants to bring out all those traces that we humans leave to nature. The exhibition Trace speaks strongly about preserving nature and starting to understand the strong human imprint and traces to the surrounding environment. Text: Helsinki This Week Photos: Sylwia Grabinska, Ann Karin Matberg, Heidi Holmlund, Finnish Nature Center Haltia

T

his spring Haltia will represent its first exhibition over climate change. Via a hundred impressive photos, the exhibition showcases the strong human imprint on nature today. The photos are taken by Nordic photographers who also share their personal stories about nature and environment. The exhibition is created in co-operation with BioFoto Finland -association and environmental researcher Panu Pihkala. RELIEF TO CLIMATE ANXIETY The aim of Trace is to raise thoughts and give hope. Many of us feel distressed about climate change and environmental challenges nowadays. Many even have psychophysical symptoms like weakness, pain or depression. These photographers want to help us cope with the climate anxiety with their empowering photos, and turn the distress into an asset. The core message is that everyone can have an influence on his or her own traces by doing better choices.

www.helsinkithisweek.com

Sometimes nature photos are criticised for distorting the real state of the nature. But the photos at Trace are real, that’s why they may also raise controversial feelings. MAKE A DIFFERENCE Haltia also offers various means to make a difference to the future of nature. For example, visitors can step into a voting booth and write greetings for the upcoming Finnish government. The Director of Haltia Tom Selänniemi is worried that maybe in the future Finnish nature can only be seen in museums: “What people do here and now will lead Haltia to become the nature museum of Finland. We want Finnish species to stay vital in the future too”. Selänniemi emphasises that the future is created together and at different levels. The exhibition is available until 12.5. after which it will start an international tour. Open Tue–Sun 10–17. Tickets 13 € / 8 €. Free with Helsinki Card. More info at www.haltia.com

Korkeavuorenkatu 21, www.ventuno.fi

Kapteeninkatu 26, www.ravintolapontus.fi
